Research is an integral part of a strong academic experience and a critical priority in NJIT’s 2025 Strategic Plan. Students study a host of subjects, such as whether blood tests can reveal Alzheimer’s and how to improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries. The school also promotes diversity in science, technology, engineering and math. Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus unless they can commute from a nearby guardian’s home, and many upperclassmen live off campus. Located between Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, New Jersey has a range of rural countryside landscapes and coastal city vistas.

Here are the best universities in New Jersey, according to the US College Rankings 202 2 .

1. Princeton University

Established in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, Princeton University is one of the oldest universities in the US and is regarded as one of the world’s most illustrious higher education institutions. In 1896, it was renamed Princeton University , and it opened its famous graduate school in 1900.

Acclaimed for its commitment to teaching, the Ivy League institution offers residential accommodation to all its undergraduates across all four years of study, with 98 per cent of undergraduates living on campus.

It has a small student body, with less than 10,000 in total, with international students making up 12 per cent of undergraduates.

Princeton is one of the world’s foremost research universities, with connections to more than 40 Nobel laureates, 17 winners of the National Medal of Science and five recipients of the National Humanities Medal.

Notable alumni who have won a Nobel prize include the physicists Richard Feynman and Robert Hofstadter and the chemists Richard Smalley and Edwin McMillan.

Princeton has also educated two US presidents, James Madison and Woodrow Wilson, who also served as the university’s president before entering the White House. Other distinguished graduates include Michelle Obama, actors Jimmy Stewart and Brooke Shields, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Apollo astronaut Pete Conrad.

Spread across 500 acres, the Princeton campus has about 180 buildings, including 10 libraries. It is popular with visitors, with about 800,000 people visiting its open campus each year, generating about $2 billion in revenue. Its campus is known for its beauty and architecture – the Lewis Library was designed by Frank Gehry and contains many of the university’s science collections.

2.  Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey

The New Brunswick Campus (or Rutgers-New Brunswick) is the largest campus and the site of the original Rutgers College. The largest state higher education institution in New Jersey, it offers a traditional big flagship school and a big-time athletics experience.

Spread across six municipalities in Middlesex County, most of it is located in the City of New Brunswick and adjacent Piscataway, and is composed of five smaller campuses and a few buildings in downtown New Brunswick. It has four large recreation centres, a free-standing fitness centre with available classes and wellness programming, plus 20 acres of activity-friendly outdoor space. There’s an Olympic-size pool with a diving tower, an 80-foot climbing wall, ropes challenge course and a roller hockey rink.

The Busch Campus is noted as the home of Rutgers’ highly ranked Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, as well as the golf course and the American football stadium. The Livingston campus is home to the RAC, which acts as home for many sports teams, notably the men’s basketball team.

As of 2010, the New Brunswick-Piscataway campuses included 19 undergraduate, postgraduate and professional schools, including the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Communication and Information, the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, the School of Engineering and the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, among others. Psychology and economics are two of the most popular majors.

Rutgers lives up to its research university moniker – the school spends hundreds of millions on research and development annually, and there are nearly 300 research centres on campus.

The campus offers more than 750 student clubs and organisations, countless social and leadership opportunities, and easy access to New York City and Philadelphia. Rutgers is the birthplace of college football, having hosted the first collegiate game in 1869 against in-state foe Princeton.

3. New Jersey Institute of Technology

Founded in 1881 as the Newark Technical School, it was renamed the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 1975.

NJIT is a public research polytechnic university that focuses on careers relating to modern technology. It is also a land and sea grant institution and a member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

There are about 11,000 enrolled students, studying across some 125 degree programmes. There are six schools: the Newark College of Engineering, the College of Architecture and Design, the College of Computing Sciences, the College of Science and Liberal Arts, the School of Management, and the Albert Dorman Honours College.

The campus is located on a 45-acre campus in the University Heights district of downtown Newark, New Jersey’s largest city and a major travel hub.

The university is recognised as being a centre for technological research and innovation, with research projects into everything from cybersecurity and smart materials to neural prosthetics and wearable robots.

It is also home to the Van Houten Library and the Barbara and Leonard Littman Library for Architecture. New Jersey’s largest high-technology and life science business incubator, owned by the university, is located in its Enterprise Development Centre. Comprising 90 member companies, it employs about 400 people and generates millions of dollars in third-party funding and revenues.

4. Stevens Institute of Technology

The Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT) was founded in Hoboken in 1870 and named after the Stevens family, known as “America’s First Family of Inventors”.

The institution was established thanks to Edwin A. Steven’s decision to leave enough money in his will to finance the establishment of a university. It is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States and was the first college in America dedicated solely to mechanical engineering.

SIT has four academic schools: business, systems and enterprises, arts and letters, and the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. School of Engineering and Science.

All schools are located on the Hoboken campus, along with several halls of residence, restaurants and sports facilities. The campus is also home to Castle Point, the highest point in Hoboken.

As well as a host of research institutes, SIT also has three national research Centres of Excellence. The Maritime Security Centre investigates port and maritime security, while the Systems Engineering Research Centre is affiliated with the US Department of Defense. The final Centre of Excellence is the Atlantic Centre for the Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships, which combines engineering disciplines and shipbuilding.

Notable alumni include Charles Stewart Mott, co-founder of General Motors; Alfred Fielding, co-inventor of bubble wrap, and Samuel P. Bush, patriarch of the Bush political family.

SIT is currently in the midst of executing a 10-year strategic plan, “The Future: Ours to Create”, which is growing and transforming the university, further extending the Stevens legacy to create a forward-looking, far-reaching institution with global impact.

5. Rutgers University-Newark

Rutgers University-Newark is a campus of the larger Rutgers University in the city of Newark.

Rutgers-Newark was created in 1946 when the state of New Jersey made Rutgers University, a private liberal arts college, into a public state university. At that time, several other private institutions were merged with Rutgers to form what is now New Jersey’s public research university.

It has two separate campuses – the Rutgers University-Newark Campus and the Rutgers Health Sciences Campus at Newark – and is regarded as one of the nation’s most esteemed public research universities.

Rutgers-Newark can trace its history back to the opening of the New Jersey Law School in 1908. The law school merged with other local higher education institutions to become the University of Newark in 1936, which was incorporated into Rutgers University in 1946, becoming the Newark campus.

Rutgers has roots going back to 1766 – making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in the USA.

Rutgers University-Newark is a research and teaching institution with more than 12,000 students. The university offers undergraduate baccalaureate degrees, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees in a wide range of subjects. It also prides itself on the quality of research undertaken at the university.

Our students are strongly encouraged to conduct faculty-mentored research as part of their curriculum, choosing an independent project or a mentored internship in an ongoing research program. Students might run lab experiments using advanced instrumentation, or foray into the field to collect data and gather specimens. Close guidance from faculty mentors ensures that students take ownership of their research as junior collaborators, not passive observers. Each year, nearly half of our students contribute new knowledge to science through mentored research.

Best Four Year Universities in New Jersey

Princeton University is a private university founded in 1746 in the suburban college town of Princeton, New Jersey. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of just over 5,000 students who attend classes on a 600-acre campus. Princeton is one of the “Big Three” Ivy League institutions and conducts classes on a semester-based academic calendar with tuition and fees for students totaling over $52,000.

Princeton is known for its unique residential living system that groups students into what has been colloquially called “eating clubs,” or dorms that have a central kitchen for the residents to frequent as a collective. There are also over 500 student groups and clubs including a university radio station, student-run newspaper, and a storied Princeton Tiger’s athletic program.

Stevens Institute of Technology offers 155 degree programs. It's a medium sized, private not-for-profit, four-year university in a large suburb. In 2022, 2,526 students graduated with students earning 1,274 Master's degrees, 923 Bachelor's degrees, 262 Certificates, and 67 Doctoral degrees.

Rutgers University is a public land-grant research university founded in 1766, with a current undergraduate enrollment of roughly 35,000. The university is the second-oldest institution of higher education in New Jersey and, with campuses in New Brunswick, Newark , and Camden , is the largest university in the state. Rutgers’ tuition and fees for in-state students are less than half the cost of those for out-of-state students, making it an affordable option for NJ residents. 

Rutgers has a variety of extracurricular opportunities for students including a study abroad office that offers programs in over 50 different countries. Large New Jersey Universities

Rutgers is the largest college in the state, with around 45,000 undergraduate students and 20,000 graduate students. This public university has four campuses in New Jersey:

Scientific Undergraduate Research Institute

What is suri.

NJCU’s  Scientific Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI)  is an umbrella organization that fosters collaboration among STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) faculty, serves as a central clearinghouse for cutting-edge research opportunities for undergraduates, and promotes a unified vision and culture of undergraduate research.

A faculty-driven initiative established in February 2015, SURI brings together all of the University’s STEM departments--Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics—as well as several student organizations, including the Biology, Chemistry, and Robotics Clubs, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), and Beta Beta Beta Honor Society.

Comprised of more than 20 STEM faculty, SURI has six initiative sub-groups: research, curriculum, fundraising, publicity, outreach to industry and graduate schools, and outreach to community college and high school STEM teachers. Each sub-group has a working plan that aligns with SURI's short-term, intermediate, and/or long-term goals.

In addition to an intense pedagogical focus, SURI faculty identify common research interests to ensure that cross-disciplinary research projects are developed. These research projects enrich the undergraduate experience for all STEM students while also augmenting the University’s research-based curriculum.

SURI is administered by a Director, who reports directly to NJCU's Provost, an Associate Director, and an Executive Committee.

OUR MISSION is to provide research opportunities to all STEM graduates, to educate a new generation of life-long learners, critical thinkers and innovators, to enhance a collegial, respectful, productive and fun-working environment for the faculty.

OUR PHILOSOPHY is transparency, collegiality, and functionality.

In October of 2016, SURI was awarded $714,216 from the U.S. Department of Education, specifically the Miniority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant for a project entitled "SURI: a model for enhancement of STEM Education." Credit Agencies Affirm Kean’s Ratings, Reflecting Strength and Growth of New Jersey’s Urban Research University

Moody’s Investors Service and S&P Global have affirmed Kean University’s ratings and stable outlook, highlighting its robust financial position amid ongoing growth and strong enrollment.

Moody’s affirmed the University’s A2 issuer rating and A2 rating on long-term revenue bonds while S&P affirmed its ‘A-’ underlying rating and long-term rating on revenue bonds.

"These affirmations of Kean University’s finances are a powerful endorsement of our mission, strategic vision and growth," said President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. "These ratings from our credit agencies reflect our financial stability and commitment to fostering an inclusive and innovative academic environment as we advance toward becoming a Carnegie-classified R2 research university."

The ratings come after two years of record freshman enrollment at Kean, which was designated as the state’s urban research university in 2021. The University now serves more than 17,000 students in Union and Toms River, New Jersey as well as Wenzhou, China.

Kean continues to thrive by aligning its programs with the diverse industries in northern New Jersey, supporting enrollment growth, and maintaining a strong regional presence, according to Moody’s.

S&P pointed to the University’s long history of operating surpluses in issuing its decision. It also cited Kean’s experienced management team that is focused on improving research and elevating the Kean brand. 

Under Repollet’s leadership, the University launched a series of wellness initiatives for students and employees, building a culture of success at an institutional level. 

"The Board of Trustees is fully supportive of Kean's educational and student wellness initiatives that drive enrollment and support retention," said Steve Fastook ’06H, chair of the Board of Trustees. "We believe these initiatives are vital to fostering a thriving academic environment while supporting the bottom line."

Moody’s cited the University’s regional importance, sizable scale and financial position relative to operations and debt. It also highlighted Kean’s diverse array of programming and its designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution as strengths.

"In these challenging times for higher education, Kean University’s fiscally responsible approach to growth sets us apart," said Trustee Matthew McDermott, chair of the Board of Trustees' finance committee. "Our commitment to financial stability ensures that we can continue to grow and innovate, further advancing Kean’s commitment to affordable academic excellence."

The University reduced its outstanding debt by more than $97 million over a 10-year period through fiscal year 2023. The stable outlook reflects expectations of gradual improvement in operating performance and contained use of reserves, with no significant increase in financial leverage.

"A strong financial footing is crucial as Kean University expands its research capacity and enhances its academic offerings," said Andrew Brannen, chief financial officer. "Our prudent financial management ensures we can support our growing research initiatives and continue to provide high-quality education."

Dr. Fiore Selected for NEH Summer Workshop on Creative/Contested Spaces

Dr. Teresa Fiore, Inserra Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies , was selected for the 2024 NEH Summer Workshop titled “Creative Spaces/Contested Spaces: Reinterpreting Italian American Public Art in New York City” (June 10-14). The workshop includes five days of presentations, discussions, and site visits designed to expand research and teaching tools as well as enrich a specific current project the participants are focusing on.

Dr. Fiore applied with a proposal linked to her ongoing endeavor, “ Memoria presente : The Common Spanish Legacy in Italian and Latin American Cultures,” which received NEH support in its initial stages in Summer 2021. A section of Memoria Presente is devoted to architecture: Dr. Fiore started developing it during Summer 2023. As part of the Undergraduate Research Program at Montclair State University, she mentored a student, Mar Arroyo Cabrera, for the production of a video on the Spanish Mission Revival architecture of Montclair State University , a historically uncontested space that warrants creative readings. Whimsically chosen as the style of the campus at the time of its foundation in 1908, this architectural style has acquired new meanings since the university moved from serving a primarily Italian (and Polish) population to a fast-growing Hispanic one (45% of the incoming class this year) and received the federal designation of Hispanic Serving Institution in 2016.

The  short video will be further expanded also thanks to the scholarly materials, intellectual exchanges, and guided tours offered through the 2024 NEH Workshop. As a result, the larger project, Memoria Presente, will also be expanded by identifying the unlikely connections between places as disparate as Montclair, NJ, San Diego, CA, Ragusa (Sicily), and Veracruz (Mexico) along the mission revival and baroque style’s colonial route. By providing useful tools to address this complex cultural geography in place, the NEH Workshop will equip Dr. Fiore to design more targeted classes of Italian language and culture for Spanish speakers.

Job Title: Digital Archivist

Department: Rowan University Libraries

Reports to: Head of Archival Collections and Services

Rowan University Libraries seeks a Digital Archivist to play an active role in building a digital archives program and acquiring, curating, and providing access to born-digital and digitally reformatted collection materials. The Digital Archivist will be the Libraries' lead resource for digital and data preservation as well as curation issues and solutions, and will participate in the management of a wide array of types of digital collections, including university electronic records and websites, born-digital and digitized manuscript and graphic materials, and other materials. As a member of the University Archives & Special Collections, the Digital Archivist reports to the University Archivist, and collaborates with other members of the larger Rowan University Libraries and Rowan University curatorial community to develop and implement policies and procedures for digital materials, and to strengthen the Libraries' digital repository.

Essential Functions:

• Manage the acquisition, description, and preservation of, as well as the access to, born-digital and digitally reformatted collections
• Provide expertise and guidance in assessing, improving, and developing policies, procedures, and workflows for digital and data curation, and in selecting digital curation tools
• Provide guidance on addressing intellectual property and privacy issues with regard to data and digital collections
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Six (6) years of professional experience in one or more combination of the following: data processing, installation and maintenance of application programs, technical support, and/or design and preparation of programs.

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

Possession of a master's degree; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

"Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

• Minimum of one year experience working as an archivist or an archivist technician working under the direction of a professional archivist
• Knowledge of digital preservation theory and practice, including best practices, current technologies, and relevant metadata and file format standards
• Experience using typical metadata and archival descriptive standards, including DublinCore, DACS, EAD, and others
• Experience with or demonstrated aptitude to learn disk imaging, digital forensics tools, and digital preservation management software
• Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, project management, and organizational skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, including working with people with diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in library/information science or a related field, preferably with archives concentration
• Experience working in an academic library environment
• Experience with web-archiving activities and tools such as Archive-It
• Knowledge of copyright and privacy issues related to digital materials
• Knowledge of legacy digital formats and non-digital audio and audiovisual formats
• Knowledge of records management principles, standards, practices, and technical issues related to digital records

New Propel AI program opens opportunities to discover artificial intelligence tools for innovative, collaborative research

Building on the robust foundation of our existing Propel program, the Office of the Vice President for Research is proud to unveil a new initiative: Propel AI. This new Propel program is designed to enrich and extend the skills of our academic community by facilitating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across USC’s comprehensive research domains.

National Laboratories Office seeks proposals for 2025 summer REU programs 

The National Laboratories Office (NLO) is seeking faculty proposals to fund Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs to be held at USC beginning in the summer of 2025. 

The NLO will support two kinds of REU programs:

• The NLO will fund up to two new, stand-alone REU summer programs.
• Active National Science Foundation-funded REU sites may apply for co-funding of up to three additional summer participants.

STRIVE training offers research administration training to professionals at USC

The Office of Research Training and Education is launching STRIVE: Strategic Training in Research Innovation and Administrative Excellence in August of 2024. STRIVE is a comprehensive and tiered training program designed specifically for research administration professionals at USC. This program will be held as a cohort model from August 2024 through May 2025. Classes will be held in person at 1430 Senate Street, Classroom 309. Cohorts will be determined based on the number of applicants.

Faculty: Claim your citations to enable tracking, mapping and record keeping services 

Web of Science makes digital citation tracking and publication records accessible for faculty, helping to maintain proper credit for published work. The Office of the Vice President for Research is asking faculty to go into Web of Science and claim all of their profiles to make sure proper credit is given for their citations . If an author has multiple citation records and all are not claimed under their profile, the publication and citations credits may not credit the author or may have a record incorrectly assigned to an author. Instructions on how to claim your faculty citations can be found here: Author Record (clarivate.com) .
