14 Best Gifts for Professors or PhD Advisors (in 2024)
A search for “PhD Advisor Gifts” on Amazon will give you about 45 mugs and 3 t-shirts. Not a strong start. I’ve been through grad school, worked with many professors, and have a good idea of what they would truly appreciate as a thank-you gift. Here’s my hand-picked list below.
This list is a compilation of my favorites from around the internet. Some are our own Genius Lab Gear inventions and some we’re just jealous we didn’t think of first! Some external links in this page are from affiliates, which means that any purchase of the items after clicking the link will result in a small monetary referral fee paid back to Genius Lab Gear at no cost to you. We appreciate your support which allows us to continue inventing and testing the best tools for scientists on the planet!
1. Academia Word Magnets
Academia is chock full of inside jokes, mannerisms, and cringeworthy habits that professors love to laugh about. These word magnets are designed specifically to let academics rant about their hardships, relish their big wins, and have a good laugh. These are perfect for the office refrigerator or the magnetic whiteboard, where sneaky students can leave passive-aggressive phrases for the advisor to find later. Get them on our site here and bundle them with other field-specific sets based on the professor’s field of study.
Also now available on Amazon .

3. Rocketbook Beacons to digitize their white board
How many times has your college professor scribbled an amazing brainstorm on a whiteboard and then lost it forever once the next student comes in to talk?
Rocketbook is well-known for their reusable notebooks which have grids and QR codes built-in to quickly snap photos of and organize hand-written notes digitally. They recently added this GENIUS product to do the same thing with white boards. You put a triangle at each corner, then use their app to snap a photo, and it can flatten the image, enhance the contrast and automatically send it to your favorite note-saving app. Keep those moments of brilliance safe!

4. Funny Coaster Set for Teachers and Professors
Professors and students love to have a good laugh at each others’ expense. Give them the upper hand for once with some funny professor coasters . It’ll protect their desk while they put down their drink between sips, giving them plenty of time to admonish the lab work you didn’t get done this week.

Laser pointers are one thing you never think about until the moment you don’t have one that works. I personally own this one because it’s got everything you need, from the pen clip to volume buttons and slide control buttons. DinoFire has several tiers with different features, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

6. Smart Coffee Mug Warmer
For the advisor who always has a cup of coffee in-hand but doesn’t have a microwave in their office, this desktop mug warmer will save them time running back and forth several times a day. The best feature is that it turns on and off automatically when a mug is on top so it doesn’t waste energy!

7. Kensington Ergonomic Vertical Wireless Mouse
Let’s be honest. Most college professors barely make it into the lab now, spending all of their time making presentations and writing grants at their computer. This new vertical mouse design is starting to catch on because it’s more ergonomic for people spending hours upon hours at the computer each day. They’ll thank you for finding such a unique solution that they probably didn’t know existed (and were too frugal to get for themselves). It’s “Treat yo’self” day for your professor. They deserve it.

8. Lab Coat Pocket Protector
A gift of nostalgic charm that is sure to resonate with their professionalism and accomplished academic life! The venerable Pocket Protector became a cultural icon in the 1960's and 1970's, but somewhere along the way the newer generation of STEM researchers forgot about them. Scientists need these back in their labs to stay organized, stay efficient, protect their lab coats, and finish their experiments without being late to lunch. So we researched and tested every type ever made to methodically solve each problem and come up with this refreshed design . Available in spruce green, sapphire blue, and faded pink - the top 3 colors voted on by our fans! You can even get it from our Amazon page if that's easier.

9. Novium Hoverpen 2.0
If your PhD advisor loves physics, astronomy, space, or technology then they will definitely appreciate having this on their desk. It’s a high-end refillable magnetic pen that hovers perfectly at an angle using magnets on all sides. The Novium Hoverpen 2.0 even spins in place for a mesmerizing power move when a student comes to office hours.

10. Personal Aeropress or Pour-Over Coffeemaker
If the office coffee is notoriously bad, the professor would definitely enjoy having a private stash and means to make single cups. I own both of these and use them all the time. The Aeropress makes the quickest, easiest single-cup you’ll find. You just need a way to heat up the water and a stash of their small round filters. There’s even a whole ecosystem of organizers for the Aeropress like this little bamboo desktop cabinet . A Chemex Pour-over is good for 2-3 cup batches but takes a little more time and effort.

11. Canvas Reusable Lunch Bag

My PhD Defense Gift Registry
Because damnit I’ve worked for six and a half years for this friggin’ thing and I deserve some prezzies.
—–
– A copy of the 250 dollar academic book I desperately needed for my dissertation work but couldn’t afford to buy so I kept renewing the copy I had checked out at the library for five and a half straight years.
– A t-shirt that says “not the useful kind of doctor” in case anybody in my general vicinity suddenly stops breathing or needs a mole checked out.
– A telescope so I can look out into the depths of outer space and try to count one star for every time I’ve heard “six years for a piece of paper and three letters behind your name huh?!” only to soon find I’ve run out of fucking stars.
– A precise, up-to-date manual on when I’m allowed to use my title and when I’m not, so as to delicately straddle the line between what I’ve rightfully earned and what makes me sound like an insufferable asshole.
– An alcohol. Any alcohol.
– A new life purpose. HAHAHAHAHA JK ONLY JOSHIN’ no but really though now what.
– Lifetime access to all the online academic databases to which I’m suddenly going to lose access, as if in exchange for receiving a diploma I have to renounce my right to a treasure trove of knowledge. Think Ariel in The Little Mermaid except my Ursula is the university libraries system.
– Another alcohol. No, not that one. I already had that one.
– A coffee mug that reads “I don’t give a fuck about your grammar you dipshit although truth be told it is fucking terrible” that I can just slowly bring up to my face and sip from while staring someone dead in the eye after they make an off-hand remark about how I’ve got a PhD in English so I’m probably going to correct their grammar all the time.
– A nap (quantity: 164,656,961)
– A nice greeting card I can give my mom that succinctly conveys sympathy for the fact that she’s just going to have to live with the knowledge that this is my big life thing to which I’ve given all my energy and that a wedding and children grow exponentially unlikely with each passing day I’m over the age of 30.
– A shock collar that’s calibrated to only go off when I start drunkenly telling people at parties that I have a doctorate.
– A nice leather bound folder in which to store all my grad school, journal publication, conference proposal, and scholarship application rejection letters that I can peruse whenever I start feeling too positive about myself.
– A high five for my dog; he’s been through a lot.
– Katie Sisneros still doesn’t know how to feel about all this.

Gift for mentor after his thesis defense?
I'm attending the thesis defense of one of my undergrad mentors this week. I owe almost everything about where I am today to him. I want to get him a gift, but I'm not sure what. He owns his own business, so a gift card seems pointless when he won't be short of money. I have never seen him eat or drink anything, EVER, so I'm not sure what kind of candy or food would be appropriate. He's a guy, so flowers are out.
We did have a shared love of a certain book series, but I already got him one of those for a Christmas gift and I feel like it might be weird to get another one again.
His thesis is something pretty abstract—even the name of the project has no real-world analogue. So a "cute" gift related to his thesis would be tough to come up with.
Also I'm a girl, if that matters, and I don't want to give him anything that would be creepy/weird/over-the-top with the gender difference taken into account.

- 15 Something for his office? Many researchers never take the time to decorate their offices; if he's one of those, it probably wouldn't be imposing to give him a nice picture or set of bookends or something. I've always wanted a cactus on my window sill, but never taken the time to go shopping for one :-) – cag51 ♦ Commented May 6, 2019 at 17:50

A short (1-2 paragraph) hand written note on a card or postcard would be an appropriate gift.
I have mentored about a dozen undergraduates and I still have the thank you notes they sent to me on my pin board in my office. The notes are nice reminders about the impact I had on the students.
- 71 +1. I have a desk drawer full of these notes. I dig them out and read a few when I get grumpy with my job. – Randall Commented May 7, 2019 at 1:56
- 5 All right, I will do this. I didn't know if it would be weird to write a note like that given the gender difference. I'm very socially awkward lol. Anyway I'll probably do that and get a cactus or something for his desk. I actually make cards pretty well so that could also be a nice touch. – ribs2spare Commented May 7, 2019 at 14:09
- 8 @ribs2spare I've gotten notes like this from undergraduates and graduate students of both genders and definitely never found it weird (nor suggestive of anything but professional appreciation of mentorship); if anything, the notes from other men are more unusual only because in my experience women have been more thoughtful about this sort of thing. Certainly nothing weird about writing a note for you to worry about. – Bryan Krause ♦ Commented May 7, 2019 at 16:17
- One thing I would consider adding is perhaps a digital version of the same or similar note that they could add to their CV, as an indicator of their experience mentoring. – Gavin Commented May 8, 2019 at 6:29
- 3 @Randall I'm glad I'm not the only one with a "smile file" – corsiKa Commented May 9, 2019 at 15:11
Actually, the thing that would be most appreciated - and valued - is a hand written letter on nice stationery giving congratulations and thanking him for his help in your own work.
Short, professional, sincere.
He will save it forever.

This is culturally dependent. You should follow local cultural norms.
When I was in Sweden, the PhD candidate would, after their successful PhD defence, organise a party, with typically between 30 and 50 people invited, such as family and friends from the office and outside. If they were supervising a few undergraduate students, they would probably invite them. At such parties, it was entirely common that people would bring gifts, which would all be placed on a table. If such a party exists and you are invited, by all means bring a small gift, similar to what you would bring if invited to a birthday party. I received food, books, souvenirs, and a few joke presents.
However, if such a party does not exist or you are not invited, and such gifts are unusual in your location, then it may be more appropriate to stick with a card such as suggested in other answers.

- 7 If I had any grasp or intuition for "local cultural norms" I probably wouldn't be here... – ribs2spare Commented May 7, 2019 at 20:12
- 1 @ribs2spare Then you may need to ask someone within your institute, as this can be very locally dependent. – gerrit Commented May 7, 2019 at 22:28
It is fairly typical for a student to give a thank you gift to their mentor when finishing. These gifts cause minor issues:
Is it ethical to accept small gifts from students?
Is it appropriate to buy a "thank you" gift for a PhD supervisor?
but you are not talking about a thank you gift, but rather more of a congratulations gift (e.g., like a wedding or baby gift). These are also awkward and the general advice is a group gift
Advisor's wife is having a baby, should we be getting him something?
Advisor getting married, should grad students chip in for gift?
Thinking about this in light of you having given a Christmas gift
Is it appropriate to give university lecturers Christmas cards?
makes me think this is all very weird. I would not want a congratulatory gift (especially one of any monetary value) from an individual student. If he is a mentor of a number of students, or works in a lab with other doctoral students, maybe you can take part in a group gift/card. I would avoid doing anything as an individual. This becomes especially true if you have not graduated yet.
![phd defence gift StrongBad's user avatar](https://i.sstatic.net/Khnp1.png?s=64)
- 4 It seems to me from the question that this was a former advisor of the student ("one of my undergrad mentors" and "I owe what I am today to him"). So while the OP is still obviously an academic junior, it seems that she is attending the defence as a (hm, what's the correct way to express this) friendly professional connection , i.e. former student keeping in touch professionally and showing support to his work by attending. So I don't actually think any of the cases you mention cover the situation from the question, at least according to my interpretation of the question. – penelope Commented May 7, 2019 at 13:03
- 1 Yes penelope, you hit the nail on the head with this. That's exactly the situation I was trying to describe. – ribs2spare Commented May 7, 2019 at 20:11
- 1 It's not the metored person who's graduating, but rather the mentor; and there is no relation of authority between them AFAICT. So I don't believe your links apply. Agree with @penelope – einpoklum Commented May 8, 2019 at 8:17
Ask him for advice about buying wine. If you actually get advice, use it to select a nice bottle for him. If demurs about the wine advice, make a gift to the university in his name. They'll send a nice card and won't mention the amount.

- 2 Sure the OP can choose a better card than the university will... They will probably send someone who has never even met the academic concerned... – Solar Mike Commented May 6, 2019 at 19:05
- 1 Possibly. Generally, the Office of Development, or whatever the fundraisers are called, has a supply of cards with something evocative of the University itself... bell tower, old library, etc. – Bob Brown Commented May 6, 2019 at 20:02
One gift that is often really appreciated is a nice pen. Not a cheap one, but a fancy one, in a nice box. In some cultures it is the habit to not buy it yourself, but to wait until someone offers it to you. You can get them from 50-200USD.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7b/Fountain_pen_writing_%28literacy%29.jpg/1200px-Fountain_pen_writing_%28literacy%29.jpg
I agree that it's culturally dependent, but in many cultures, you could bring sweets or something else that's edible, for after the thesis defense. I would personally consider chocolate from a higher-quality brand. It's not something of great value, but it's not something you'd just by at the corner kiosk; it is associated with some level of affection, but - unless you buy a heart-shaped box - it won't be construed as romantic. Most people (in my experience) like it, but at the same time it's acceptable not to open and have it right away if they don't want to.
As for a thank-you letter - that may be appropriate in general, but I don't see how that relates to that mentor's thesis defense in particular. Perhaps a congratulatory card which also has a couple of thank-you lines would go well with the chocolate though.
PS - Chocolate is also kind of a generic gift. It might well be better to get something which would be specifically appreciated by your mentor. But this answer is intended for other readers as well...
A nice matted and (optionally) framed photo of the city/town in which the university is located (e.g. from a local photographer) might be a nice gift, especially if it has an iconic skyline or downtown. This is even if the mentor doesn't plan to continue in the same city, because he still spent a number of years there and it had an impact on his life. It's also a nice relatively neutral item that can help decorate a future office.
In addition, +1 to Richard Erickson's answer about a thank-you/congrats card with a paragraph or few from you.

Contact the school and find out the dimensions of the diploma. Then purchase a frame and matting so that he can hang it nicely in his office.
This is totally appropriate and specific to the occasion.
- 2 No, please, no. A lot of people would never hang their diplomas anywhere (e.g. I threw my diplomas in some long forgotten cabinet...) – Massimo Ortolano Commented May 7, 2019 at 14:44
- @MassimoOrtolano Well, I got my high school diploma framed after a successful doctoral dissertation defense. Sadly, diploma and frame are in a closet. – Bob Brown Commented May 7, 2019 at 16:01
- @cag51 Your reading of the question is not the same as mine. If I understand it correctly, the present is for the OP's former mentor, and this mentor is just now defending his thesis (presumably his Ph.D. thesis). In particular, the mentor is not a professor (yet). – Andreas Blass Commented May 7, 2019 at 19:32
- 1 ohhh, yes, you are right. Thanks for pointing that out. – cag51 ♦ Commented May 7, 2019 at 19:40
- In this case, I would just be concerned about whether he already has plans to have it framed, or wants it framed a certain way. – cag51 ♦ Commented May 7, 2019 at 19:41

- PhD Viva Voces – A Complete Guide
- Doing a PhD
- A PhD viva involves defending your thesis in an oral examination with at least two examiners.
- The aim of a PhD viva is to confirm that the work is your own , that you have a deep understanding of your project and, overall, that you are a competent researcher .
- There are no standard durations, but they usually range from one to three hours, with most lasting approximately two hours .
- There are six outcomes of a PhD viva: (1) pass without corrections (2) pass subject to minor corrections, (3) pass subject to major corrections, (4) downgrade to MPhil with no amendments, (5) downgrade to MPhil subject to amendments, (6) immediate fail.
- Almost all students who sit their viva pass it, with the most common outcome being ‘(2) – pass subject to minor corrections’.
What Is a PhD Viva?
A viva voce , more commonly referred to as ‘viva’, is an oral examination conducted at the end of your PhD and is essentially the final hurdle on the path to a doctorate. It is the period in which a student’s knowledge and work are evaluated by independent examiners.
In order to assess the student and their work around their research question, a viva sets out to determine:
- you understand the ideas and theories that you have put forward,
- you can answer questions about elements of your work that the examiners have questions about,
- you understand the broader research in your field and how your work contributes to this,
- you are aware of the limitations of your work and understand how it can be developed further,
- your work makes an original contribution, is your own and has not been plagiarised.
Note: A viva is a compulsory procedure for all PhD students, with the only exception being when a PhD is obtained through publication as opposed to the conventional route of study.
Who Will Attend a Viva?
In the UK, at least two examiners must take part in all vivas. Although you could have more than two examiners, most will not in an attempt to facilitate a smoother questioning process.
One of the two examiners will be internal, i.e. from your university, and the other will be external, i.e. from another university. Regardless, both will be knowledgeable in your research field and have read your thesis beforehand.
In addition to your two examiners, two other people may be present. The first is a chairperson. This is an individual who will be responsible for monitoring the interview and for ensuring proper conduct is followed at all times. The need for an external chairperson will vary between universities, as one of the examiners can also take on this role. The second is your supervisor, whose attendance is decided upon by you in agreement with your examiners. If your supervisor attends, they are prohibited from asking questions or from influencing the outcome of the viva.
To avoid any misunderstandings, we have summarised the above in a table:
Examiners | Mandatory and minimum of 2 | Your supervisor | Yes |
Chairperson | Optional | Your university | No |
Your Supervisor | Optional | You, in agreement of both examiners | No |
Note: In some countries, such as in the United States, a viva is known as a ‘PhD defense’ and is performed publicly in front of a panel or board of examiners and an open audience. In these situations, the student presents their work in the form of a lecture and then faces questions from the examiners and audience which almost acts as a critical appraisal.
How Long Does a Viva Last?
Since all universities have different guidelines , and since all PhDs are unique, there are no standard durations. Typically, however, the duration ranges from one to three hours, with most lasting approximately two hours.
Your examiners will also influence the duration of your viva as some will favour a lengthy discussion, while others may not. Usually, your university will consult your examiners in advance and notify you of the likely duration closer to the day of your viva.
What Happens During a Viva?
Regardless of the subject area, all PhD vivas follow the same examination process format as below.
Introductions
You will introduce yourselves to each other, with the internal examiner normally introducing the external examiner. If an external chairperson is present, they too are introduced; otherwise, this role will be assumed by one of the examiners.
Procedure Explained
After the introductions, the appointed chair will explain the viva process. Although it should already be known to everyone, it will be repeated to ensure the viva remains on track during the forthcoming discussion.
Warm-Up Questions
The examiners will then begin the questioning process. This usually starts with a few simple opening questions, such as asking you to summarise your PhD thesis and what motivated you to carry out the research project.
In-Depth Questions
The viva questions will then naturally increase in difficulty as the examiners go further into the details of your thesis. These may include questions such as “What was the most critical decision you made when determining your research methodology ?”, “Do your findings agree with the current published work?” and “How do your findings impact existing theories or literature? ”. In addition to asking open-ended questions, they will also ask specific questions about the methodology, results and analysis on which your thesis is based.
Closing the Viva
Once the examiners are satisfied that they have thoroughly evaluated your knowledge and thesis, they will invite you to ask any questions you may have, and then bring the oral examination to a close.
What Happens After the Viva?
Once your viva has officially ended, your examiners will ask you to leave the room so that they can discuss your performance. Once a mutual agreement has been reached, which can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, you will be invited back inside and informed of your outcome.
PhD Viva Outcomes
There are six possible outcomes to a viva:
- Immediate award of degree: A rare recommendation – congratulations, you are one of the few people who completely satisfied your examiners the first time around. You do not have to do anything further at this point.
- Minor amendments required: The most common recommendation – you obtain a pass on the condition that you make a number of minor amendments to your thesis, such as clarifying certain points and correcting grammatical errors. The time you have to make these changes depends on the number of them, but is usually one to six months.
- Major amendments required: A somewhat uncommon recommendation – you are requested to make major amendments to your thesis, ranging from further research to collecting more data or rewriting entire sections. Again, the time you have to complete this will depend on the number of changes required, but will usually be six months to one year. You will be awarded your degree once your amended thesis has been reviewed and accepted.
- Immediate award of MPhil: An uncommon recommendation – your examiners believe your thesis does not meet the standard for a doctoral degree but meets the standard for an MPhil (Master of Philosophy), a lower Master’s degree.
- Amendments required for MPhil: A rare recommendation – your examiners believe your thesis does not meet the standard for a doctoral degree, but with several amendments will meet the standard for an MPhil.
- Immediate fail: A very rare recommendation – you are given an immediate fail without the ability to resubmit and without entitlement to an MPhil.
Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.
What Is the Pass Rate for Vivas?
Based on an analysis of 26,076 PhD students who took their viva exam between 2006 and 2017, the PhD viva pass rate in the UK is 96%; of those who passed, about 80% were required to make minor amendments to their thesis. The reason for this high pass rate is that supervisors will only put their students forward for a viva once they confidently believe they are ready for it. As a result, most candidates who sit a viva are already well-versed in their PhD topic before they even start preparing for the exam.
How Do I Arrange a Viva?
Your viva will be arranged either by the examiners or by the chairperson. The viva will be arranged at least one to two months after you have submitted your thesis and will arrange a viva date and venue that is suitable for all participants.
Can I Choose My Examiners?
At most universities, you and your supervisor will choose the internal and external examiners yourselves. This is because the examiners must have extensive knowledge of the thesis topic in order to be able to examine you and, as the author of the thesis in question, who else could better determine who they might be than you and your supervisor. The internal examiner is usually quite easy to find given they will be from your institution, but the external examiner may end up being your second or third preference depending on availability.
Can I Take Notes Into a Viva?
A viva is about testing your competence, not your memory. As such, you are allowed to take notes and other supporting material in with you. However, keep in mind that your examiners will not be overly impressed if you constantly have to refer to your notes to answer each question. Because of this, many students prefer to take an annotated copy of their thesis, with important points already highlighted and key chapters marked with post-it notes.
In addition to an annotated copy of a thesis, some students also take:
- a list of questions they would like to ask the examiners,
- notes that were created during their preparation,
- a list of minor corrections they have already identified from their viva prep work.
How Do I Prepare for a PhD Viva?
There are several ways to prepare for a PhD viva, one of the most effective being a mock viva voce examination . This allows you to familiarise yourself with the type of viva questions you will be asked and identify any weak areas you need to improve. They also give you the opportunity to practise without the pressure, giving you more time to think about your answers which will help to make sure that you know your thesis inside out. However, a mock viva exam is just one of many methods available to you – some of the other viva preparation methods can be found on our “ How to Prepare for a PhD Viva ” page.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Trying to convince voters that Biden's debate performance was a one-off will backfire, experts say
- Biden's aides downplayed his poor debate performance, framing it as a blip.
- Meanwhile, the president highlighted his age, saying he doesn't speak or debate like he used to.
- Experts say trying to convince voters it won't happen again with come back to haunt the campaign.

President Joe Biden 's aides have defended his debate performance, treating it as an unimportant one-off in a long campaign.
According to The New York Times , the president's aides are trying to cast Biden's performance — branded by many as a disaster — as insignificant in the long run.
Jen O'Malley Dillon, Biden's top campaign strategist, said a potential drop in the polls would be due to an "overblown media narrative," according to the outlet.
Quentin Fulks, the president's deputy campaign manager, told staff that "nothing fundamentally changed about this election" after the debate, per The Times.
Many disagree. Though Biden and Trump both performed poorly , the consensus was that the former lost.
This was largely due to his confusing ramblings and apparent struggle to keep track of his answers, which led commentators to question whether the 81-year-old was too old for the job.
Related stories
Ironically, Biden's aides also appeared to blame the president's age when discussing his debate performance with Axios . The unnamed staff members said he struggles to function outside a six-hour window between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Biden's defense could be used against him
Thomas Gift, an associate professor of political science at University College London, told Business Insider that Biden's defense could be used against him later in the campaign.
"Trying to convince Americans that the president is fine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is hardly reassuring. This isn't a part-time job at McDonald's. It's the presidency of the United States," Gift said, adding that domestic and foreign crises don't unfold "only during standard business hours."
Biden echoed his aides' comments during a speech in Raleigh on Friday, telling the crowd that he doesn't speak or debate "as well as I used to."
"But I know what I do know — I know how to tell the truth ... I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done. And I know, like millions of Americans know, when you get knocked down, you get back up," he said.
Biden's decision to highlight the criticism of his age could "backfire," according to Gift, who said it could become even more prominent in voters' minds.
"Lots of Americans might reasonably ask: what else doesn't Biden do as well as he used to? Interact with foreign leaders as well as he used to? Negotiate with Congress as well as he used to? Make decisions about war and peace as well as he used to?" Gift said.
As BI's Katherine Tangalakis-Lippert and Erin Snodgrass previously noted, Biden is using a Trumpian strategy: asking voters not to count him out despite clear flaws in his campaign.
Andrew Payne , an author and foreign policy expert, told BI that the Biden campaign may also regret framing the debate as a one-off because the president may struggle at future campaign events.
"By framing Biden's performance as a 'blip,' campaign surrogates are trying to reset expectations. This carries some risk if the president again fails to meet them when he next goes toe-to-toe with Donald Trump," said Payne, author of "War on the Ballot: How the Election Cycle Shapes Presidential Decision-Making in War."
Payne pointed out that the "blip" narrative could have some truth to it, especially as he was "noticeably more assured in his public comments the day after the debate."
Gift isn't convinced, saying there's little evidence to suggest that Biden will overcome his issues with public speaking.
"It's hard for Biden's team to characterize the debate as 'just a blip' when the White House has spent much of the last four years shielding him from public view, with the exception of pre-written speeches read from a teleprompter," Gift said.
"He's done virtually no adversarial interviews, and his number of press conferences with Q&A have been far fewer than his predecessors," he added.

Sanctions Policy
Etsy provides a direct connection between buyers and sellers around the world. When you use Etsy’s services (we’ll refer to Etsy.com, Pattern by Etsy, our mobile apps, and other services as our “Services”), you are responsible for complying with this policy, regardless of your location.
This policy is a part of our Terms of Use . By using any of our Services, you agree to this policy and our Terms of Use.
As a global company based in the US with operations in other countries, Etsy must comply with economic sanctions and trade restrictions, including, but not limited to, those implemented by the Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC") of the US Department of the Treasury. This means that Etsy or anyone using our Services cannot take part in transactions that involve designated people, places, or items that originate from certain places, as determined by agencies like OFAC, in addition to trade restrictions imposed by related laws and regulations.
This policy applies to anyone that uses our Services, regardless of their location. It is up to you to familiarize yourself with these restrictions.
For example, these restrictions generally prohibit, but are not limited to, transactions involving:
- Certain geographic areas, such as Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Russia, Belarus, and the Donetsk People’s Republic (“DNR”) and Luhansk People’s Republic (“LNR”) regions of Ukraine, or any individual or entity operating or residing in those places;
- Individuals or entities identified on sanctions lists such as OFAC’s Specially Designated Nationals (“SDN”) List or Foreign Sanctions Evaders (“FSE”) List ;
- Nationals of Cuba, regardless of location, unless citizenship or permanent residency outside of Cuba has been established; and
- Items originating from areas including Cuba, North Korea, Iran, or Crimea, with the exception of informational materials such as publications, films, posters, phonograph records, photographs, tapes, compact disks, and certain artworks.
- Any goods, services, or technology from DNR and LNR with the exception of qualifying informational materials, and agricultural commodities such as food for humans, seeds for food crops, or fertilizers.
- The importation into the U.S. of the following products of Russian origin: fish, seafood, non-industrial diamonds, gold, and any other product as may be determined from time to time by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
- The exportation from the U.S., or by a U.S. person, of luxury goods, and other items as may be determined by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, to any person located in Russia or Belarus. A list and description of ‘luxury goods’ can be found in Supplement No. 5 to Part 746 under the Federal Register.
- Items originating outside of the U.S. that are subject to the U.S. Tariff Act or related Acts concerning prohibiting the use of forced labor.
In order to protect our community and marketplace, Etsy takes steps to ensure compliance with sanctions programs. For example, Etsy prohibits members from using their accounts while in certain geographic locations. If we have reason to believe you are operating your account from a sanctioned location, such as any of the places listed above, or are otherwise in violation of any economic sanction or trade restriction, we may suspend or terminate your use of our Services. Members are generally not permitted to list, buy, or sell items that originate from sanctioned areas. This includes items that pre-date sanctions, since we have no way to verify when they were actually removed from the restricted location. Members are also generally not permitted to ship items to or from sanctioned areas. Etsy reserves the right to request that sellers provide additional information, disclose an item's country of origin in a listing, or take other steps to meet compliance obligations. It is important that members provide complete and accurate information regarding the origin of items on the Etsy marketplace to ensure compliance with sanctions programs. We may disable listings or cancel transactions that present a risk of violating this policy.
In addition to complying with OFAC and applicable local laws, Etsy members should be aware that other countries may have their own trade restrictions and that certain items may not be allowed for export or import under international laws. You should consult the laws of any jurisdiction when a transaction involves international parties.
Finally, Etsy members should be aware that third-party payment processors, such as PayPal, may independently monitor transactions for sanctions compliance and may block transactions as part of their own compliance programs. Etsy has no authority or control over the independent decision-making of these providers.
The economic sanctions and trade restrictions that apply to your use of the Services are subject to change, so members should check sanctions resources regularly. For legal advice, please consult a qualified professional.

Note: In some countries, such as in the United States, a viva is known as a 'PhD defense' and is performed publicly in front of a panel or board of examiners and an open audience. In these situations, the student presents their work in the form of a lecture and then faces questions from the examiners and audience which almost acts as a critical appraisal.
