PHD Defense of Dmitry Alexandrovsky

In August, Dmitry Alexandrovsky successfully passed his PhD exam on "Engaging Interaction - Designing for Immersive and Sustained User Experiences."

The dissertation explores how interaction design can sustain engagement with interactive systems. Involving emotional, cognitive and behavioral components of engagement and is looking at engagement from the perspectives of user experience intensity, as well as user behavior. At the macro level, these three strands of research pursue a holistic view of user experience and provide concrete but generalizable starting points for the design of engaging interactive systems. At the micro-level, this dissertation extends existing theories and demonstrates the effects of individual elements on user behavior and the intensity of the experience with interactive systems.

We warmly congratulate Mr. Alexandrovsky for passing the exam so successfully!

PhD Defence: Jelmer Pier van der Gaast

phd defense erasmus university

In his dissertation ‘Stochastic Models for Order Picking Systems’ ERIM’s Jelmer Pier van der Gaast develops new stochastic models for the performance evaluation of two state-of-the art order picking systems: zone picking and polling-based milkrun picking.

Jelmer defended his dissertation in the Senate Hall at Erasmus University Rotterdam on Thursday, 8 September 2016 at 13:30. His supervisor was  Prof. M.B.M. de Koster and his co-supervisor was  Prof. I.J.B.F. Adan . Other members of the Doctoral Committee were Prof. R. Dekker (ESE), Prof. -ing. K. Furmans (KIT) and Dr J.A.C. Resing (TUE).

About Jelmer Pier van der Gaast

phd defense erasmus university

Jelmer Pier van der Gaast was born in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) on July 21, 1988. He completed grammar school at the RSG Hoeksche Waard, Oud-Beijerland in June 2006. In October 2010 he received his master’s degree in Econometrics and Management Science with distinction from Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2011 he joined the Management of Technology & Innovation group at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

His research interests include: warehouse operations, stochastic processes, and queueing theory. His research findings have been presented in many international conferences including INFORMS Annual Meeting, European Conference on Operational Research, SMMSO Conference on Stochastic Models of Manufacturing and Service Operations, and International Material Handling Research Colloquium.

Thesis Abstract

phd defense erasmus university

Order picking, the process of retrieving customer orders from their storage locations, is the most critical operation in a warehouse. Any under performance in order picking can lead to unsatisfactory service and high operational cost for the warehouse, and consequently for the whole supply chain in which the company operates. This thesis develops new stochastic models for the performance evaluation of two state-of-the art order picking systems: zone picking and polling-based milkrun picking. These models adequately describe and predict the consequences of variability on the performance of these warehousing systems.

The first part of the thesis zone picking systems are studied, one of the most popular conveyor-based picker-to-parts order picking methods used in practice. We model the various elements of the system including conveyor merges as a network of queues with multiple order classes, with capacity constraints on subnetworks, and with the dynamic block-and-recirculate protocol. The resulting model is most suitable to support rapid and optimal design of complex zone picking systems. In the second part of the thesis, milkrun picking systems are investigated. In this system an order picker picks multiple orders that arrive in real-time and integrates them in the current picking cycle. This subsequently changes dynamically the stops on the order picker’s picking route. Using polling models, we study order throughput times for various picking policies, and the effect of product allocation. The results of the model show that when the order arrival rate is high milkrun order picking significantly improves system performance compared to conventional batch picking. In addition, the best product allocation improves the order throughput time considerably.

PhD student to research multi-functional artificial coral reefs with prestigious fellowship

By Lorena Taboas 05-16-2024

In an exceptional display of academic excellence and forward-thinking, graduate student Kylee Rux has been awarded one of the most prestigious fellowships in the U.S. scientific community: the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship by the Department of Defense. This fellowship, funded for three years, will allow Kylee to explore the development of multi-functional artificial coral reefs.

Inspired by early experiences in high school maintaining the classroom's saltwater aquariums, Rux developed a passion for addressing climate change, particularly its effects on the oceans. This led to a profound interest in combining engineering and marine science to create solutions that mitigate environmental impact. Rux’s interest was quickly piqued by the cement industry, known for its significant carbon emissions, but also for its unique potential.

"Living in Miami, we are at the forefront of climate change and understand the urgency in protecting our coastlines," Rux explains. “I plan to investigate an artificial reef structure that mitigates wave impact and boosts biodiversity while extending the service life. A major area of interest is in exploring the reefs' multi-functional abilities towards enhanced resilience, such as self-healing.”

Rux’s faculty advisor, civil and architectural engineering assistant professor, Prannoy Suraneni , is currently researching sustainable concretes. Green-gray solutions have been one of the main research focuses for the College of Engineering, aiming to find innovative solutions for shoreline protection and habitats for marine life to navigate climate change impacts.

Over the next five years, Rux envisions continuing to develop solutions that reduce the impact of climate change, whether in academia or industry and hopes to mentor the next generation of innovators, particularly young girls.

The Department of Defense NDSEG Fellowship is a highly competitive award given to students pursuing doctoral degrees in science and engineering disciplines. Sponsored by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Army, the program aims to increase the number of U.S. citizens trained in disciplines of science and engineering of military importance.

Rux was also awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP) but chose to accept the Department of Defense Fellowship.
