Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, netflix’s sweet tooth is a tender, riveting adventure story.

this a sweet tooth

With source material written before the pandemic and a production that began life pre-COVID as well, Netflix’s brilliant “Sweet Tooth” may not be a direct commentary on what the world has been through in the last year, but the presence of that real-world echo is undeniable. It’s a show about a devastating virus that leads people to distrust one another, go into hiding, allow their fear to drive their decisions, and ultimately form unexpected bonds. It’s about isolation and grief, but it is also very much about the unpredictable connections that can end up defining us. It’s intense, riveting storytelling that recalls the spirit of Amblin almost more than the nostalgia warehouse that is “Stranger Things,” the king of Netflix Originals. It would have been excellent television in any year, but "Sweet Tooth" strikes a different chord in 2021 than anyone could have expected.

this a sweet tooth

The great Jim Mickle (“ We Are What We Are ,” “ Cold in July ”) co-created “Sweet Tooth” (with Beth Schwartz) and directs the riveting premiere (along with a few more episodes throughout the eight-episode first season). Based on the beloved comic series by Jeff Lemire, “Sweet Tooth” is a vision of a population-changing pandemic that destroys humanity as we know it while also bringing forth the next step in human evolution. The planet is divided as to whether or not they were a cause of the pandemic or a product of it but children start to become born who aren’t exactly human, more hybrids of our species and others from throughout nature. The hybrid children became enemies, hunted down and killed, if they’re lucky, experimented on if they’re not.

The protagonist of “Sweet Tooth” (the title is a nickname for his character) is the charming Gus ( Christian Convery , giving one of the best TV child performances in years), a deer/human hybrid who has been kept in hiding by his father ( Will Forte ). Trained on how to survive in isolation, apart from a world that wants him dead, the opening scenes of “Sweet Tooth” echo “ Hanna ” in the narrative of a unique child kept in secrecy. The show will likely also draw comparisons to “ The Road ” and even “The Walking Dead,” but this is no streaming mimic—"Sweet Tooth" has a strong, rich personality of its own that may have been inspired by other works of art but stands on its own as well.

this a sweet tooth

The simple life of Gus and his father is shattered in the premiere, sending our sweetheart protagonist on a journey to try and find his mother. All he has of her is a photo—and she’s recognizably Amy Seimetz —with the words R.R. Colorado on it, and so he goes to that state to find her. His unexpected traveling companion is a gentle giant named Tommy (the phenomenal Nonso Anozie ), who once served in a violent military group named The Last Men, hunters of hybrids and anyone who hides them.

“Sweet Tooth” is divided into three arcs. The primary one is the journey of Tommy, Gus, and an eventual third traveler, a fighter named Bear ( Stefania LaVie Owen ), a young person who believes the hybrids are a positive form of evolution and has tried to protect them. Meanwhile, Dr. Aditya Singh ( Adeel Akhtar ) is handed a potential cure for the pandemic that is still ravaging the country, but it could come at the cost of his moral center. Adding pressure to his research is the fact that his wife Rani (Aliza Vellani) has the disease, which the two are trying to hide from the neighborhood. The season’s darkest moment unfolds in episode three, when it’s revealed what happens in this suburban utopia when someone starts showing symptoms. At the same time, we’re introduced to Aimee ( Dania Ramirez ), who runs a safe space for hybrids, at great risk to her own personal safety. And the legendary James Brolin narrates the whole thing with a Sam Elliott-esque gravitas that really adds to the modern fable tone of the affair.

this a sweet tooth

While most of these characters don’t intersect for the majority of the season, Mickle’s story sense is seamless and fluid. He doesn’t overplay his themes, allowing them to emerge across the multiple plotlines in a way that elevates the entire production, and none of this eight-episode season succumbs to the bloat or repetition that so often sinks the Netflix Original. The performances are strong throughout—Anozie is particularly remarkable—but it’s the consistently inventive writing and robust filmmaking that makes the project stand out. It’s heartfelt and fantastical at the same time, bringing us to a world very different from our own but with characters who have relatable concerns and emotions. The craft is also remarkable throughout with a great score from the excellent Jeff Grace , a regular Mickle collaborator, and cinematography that embraces the natural world with soft greens and whites. It’s a beautiful show.

How far would you go to survive? How far would you go to make sure the people close to you survived? How much would you give up morally to save yourself or a loved one? Questions of sacrifice, isolation, and now reconnection will echo in Summer 2021 in ways that we never could have imagined, but I think “Sweet Tooth” would have been major TV before COVID too. It’s a show about how personal connections can both endanger and inspire us, an old-fashioned “makeshift family” adventure story that feels both incredibly current and yet timeless in its structure, style, and emotion. "Sweet Tooth" ends on a series of cliffhangers that might lead some to criticize this season as being more set-up or prologue than the best of television, but it’s a minor complaint for a show that I truly hope ends up being as major as it deserves to be.

The third season of Netflix’s series will be its last

Christian Convery as Gus in the first episode of Sweet Tooth

Gus is getting one more season to wrap up his story in Netflix’s Sweet Tooth . The series’ second season premiere was quickly followed by the announcement of a third and final season.

While information on Sweet Tooth season 3 is still a little sparse, here’s everything we’ve heard about the show’s last season so far, including it’s surprising production timeline, which could point to a release in the not-too-distant future:

Is Sweet Tooth getting a season 3?

It is. A little less than a week after the second season was released, Netflix announced that Sweet Tooth would be getting one more season.

Will Sweet Tooth season 3 be the final season?

Sweet Tooth will end with season 3. The table is already set for an ending and the conclusion of season 2, so it makes perfect sense that the show’s on the way to it’s finale next season.

Sweet Tooth will return for a third and final season! pic.twitter.com/tSMjWznWQi — Netflix (@netflix) May 3, 2023

Has Netflix started making Sweet Tooth season 3 yet?

Apparently, production has already been completed. This is pretty surprising, considering we didn’t hear about this new season until recently.

When is Sweet Tooth season 3 coming out?

We don’t know for sure when exactly the season’s set for release, but with season 3 already done, then we may end up seeing it pretty soon. That being said, it’s still not likely we see season 3 this year — but it is at the very least possible.

What happens in Sweet Tooth season 3?

Season 3 of Sweet Tooth will likely pick up right after the conclusion of the second season, when Gus sets off toward Alaska with a team of friends to finally find his mom (hopefully).

Of course he’ll face some obstacles (as he has the whole time, let’s be honest): While Abbot was dispatched with in the season 2 finale, he’s left a new adversary in his wake, one who seems even more determined to do away with the hybrids — or at least turn them into a cure. While we don’t know exactly what she’s feeding in those cages, it seems like whatever it is will be pretty vicious, meaning Gus’ arctic expedition might face some tough times.

Sweet Tooth season 3 is on the way to Netflix, and the next chapter of the unique post-apocalyptic tale will conclude the story when it arrives in 2024. Debuting to great critical acclaim in 2021, Sweet Tooth follows the adventures of Gus (Christian Convery) a human-deer hybrid boy who traverses a post-apocalyptic landscape in search of a new life. Based on the popular comic book of the same name by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth blends elements of action, science fiction, and fantasy in a way that gives an alternative to the usual superhero comic book adaptations.

The first season was a huge success for the streamer and it garnered overwhelmingly positive critical attention that praised the series for its family-friendly approach to its material without sacrificing any of the story's emotional power. A Trailer & Release Date Is Revealed

Though a release window was announced earlier in the year, the latest news sees a release date and trailer for Sweet Tooth season 3 revealed . The upcoming final season of the smash-hit Netflix original is slated to premiere on June 6, 2024, and it promises to be the biggest yet. Along with the release date, Netflix's full trailer shows off the explosive finale and highlights Gus' journey to Alaska . Along the way, the gang encounters threats both from other people and from the dangerous environment around them. It's unclear if any other teaser will be dropped before the June premiere.

All 8 episodes of Sweet Tooth season 3 will premiere on June 6, 2024.

The Hidden Meaning Behind Sweet Tooth’s Title (And Why It’s Perfect)

Sweet Tooth’s title fits the fantastical and disturbing ambiance of the Netflix series well, but the name actually has more meaning than it seems.

Sweet Tooth Concludes In June

After a long and arduous wait for news regarding the third and final season of Sweet Tooth , Netflix finally revealed the season's release date alongside the full-length trailer. Now, the final season of the beloved comic book series is slated to drop all of its episodes on June 6, 2024 .

Gus & Friends Return For One Last Adventure

The cast of Sweet Tooth season 3 will see many returning faces from the first two installments. T here haven't been any unexpected cast exits or recasts since the conclusion of season 2 , and it stands to reason that all the beloved characters will return for the final outing. There have been some confirmed new cast members for Sweet Tooth season 3 too. Cara Gee will be joining the cast of Sweet Tooth as Siana, with Ayazhan Dalabayeva as Nuka. Lastly, Kelly Marie Tran will be joining the cast as Rosie an entirely new character for the upcoming season.

The returning cast members of Sweet Tooth season 3 will include:

Gus' Journey Ends In Season 3

Sweet Tooth season 3 will start a new chapter in the lives of the characters, and by splitting up the cast, they have also opened the door for more branching storylines.

Following the defeat of Abbot at Gus' former cabin in Yellowstone at the end of Sweet Tooth season 2, the series made it abundantly clear where the characters were heading. Determined to reach his mother in Alaska, Gus set out along with Big Man, Wendy, and Bear/Becky to find her . Sweet Tooth season 3 will start a new chapter in the lives of the characters, and by splitting up the cast, they have also opened the door for more branching storylines.

Showrunner Jim Mickle did share a few details about what to expect from Sweet Tooth season 3's story at the 2023 TUDUM event. “[It’s] another road trip story like Season 1, but in a very different way, ” Mickle explained. “ Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”

Season 3 will also most likely put more emphasis on the show's lore, as the revelation that Gus may have control over wild animals added another wrinkle to the hybrids. If Abbot is truly defeated, the series will also need to introduce a new antagonist which the comics could supply. Nevertheless, Sweet Tooth season 3 could be an opportunity for the show to mature a bit as the audience has grown and changed over the years since its debut.

A Trilogy Concludes

With the announcement of Sweet Tooth season 3 also came the revelation that the third outing would be the last. While the news may be somewhat disappointing for fans, it makes sense from a narrative perspective and a logistical one as well . Even though Sweet Tooth has been released regularly, the age of its youngest cast members is a consideration, as shows like Stranger Things have discovered as their child stars have blossomed into adults. As far as the narrative goes, a tight three-season run perfectly fits Lemire's brilliant but brief comic series.

Watch The First Look At Season 3 Below

Besides the usual threats from the human world, the trailer reveals a plethora of environmental dangers that might stop Gus from achieving his goal.

Along with the final season's release date, Netflix also premiered the full trailer for Sweet Tooth season 3 in April 2024 and it promises to be an exhilarating conclusion. The nearly 2-minute tease introduces Gus and the gang's trip to Alaska and illustrates the many perils they'll face along the way . Besides the usual threats from the human world, the trailer reveals a plethora of environmental dangers that might stop Gus from achieving his goal. The season 3 trailer makes it clear that season 3 of Sweet Tooth will be a fitting conclusion to the Netflix original series.

Sweet Tooth

Based on the comic series of the same name, Sweet Tooth is set in the not-too-distant future, post-apocalyptic United States in the wake of a devastating viral pandemic. After the disease decimated the world's population, some children began to be born with human and animal hybrid characteristics. Many people are afraid of the hybrids, believing them to be the cause of the virus. When his father is killed, a young deer hybrid named Gus (Christian Convery) embarks on a quest to find his mother with the help of a traveler and loner named Tommy Jeppard (Nonso Anozie).

Sweet Tooth review – this fur-baby confection is either genius … or atrocious

Netflix tries to make the pandemic palatable with this fantasy drama about an army of half-human, half-animal children, born after the rise of a mysterious virus. You’re going to need a drink

I would invite you to watch Sweet Tooth with an open mind and, ideally, a large drink inside you and another one to hand. For I cannot for the life of me tell if it is the worst thing I have ever seen, or the greatest work devised for the entertainment of humankind.

To explain: Sweet Tooth is set 10 years after the Great Crumble. A mysterious virus has swept the globe. Humanity has descended into chaos (“It sucks,” says one survivor. “No rules. No laws. Once the internet went down, it was over.” We pause to say a silent prayer that Covid never affected wifi coverage).

At the same time as “the Sick” appeared, all human babies started being born as animal hybrids. Yes, you read that correctly. Come back here right now and see the rest.

Dr Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar), whose story will be one of the B-plots we follow, is led into a maternity ward by a supremely baffled nurse. He finds it filled with newborns who have had furry, feathery or prickly-hedgehog filters placed over them by someone working with enthusiasm and a strict budget. Sometimes they look cute, sometimes they look as if they are plummeting down the uncanny valley and will never stop.

One father (Will Forte), of a baby who has emerged with touches of deer about him, sets out early for the hills. They take refuge in Yellowstone national park while the world goes to hell in a handcart.

We watch the baby – Gus (Christian Convery) – grow up over the next 10 years. He learns to fish and tap maple trees for syrup (hence his nickname, from which the stupid title of the show is taken); his antlers come in above his little deer ears, that sort of thing. Their idyll is shattered when they are spotted by one of the Real Men: an admirably on-the-nose name for the kind of militia so commonly included in post-apocalyptic US visions that their heavily armed presence almost amounts to a mandate. This violent assemblage have not grasped that correlation does not imply causation and therefore blame the hybrids for the virus. They are bent on hunting down and killing the lot of them (although sometimes they take “special ones” “elsewhere”).

Papa dies defending the homestead. Gus fends for himself – badly, considering he should have a decade of survivalist skills under his belt – until he is saved from another band of Real Men by Jep (Nonso Anozie). Jep becomes his unwilling protector and the rest of the series is structured round their road trip across the US to Colorado, to find Gus’s mother. Did I mention that his father left him clues about where to find the mementoes of her that he had buried in a locked metal box under a tree, and that his father died with the keys in his hand? Sorry, I thought that was a given.

Meanwhile, Dr Singh is keeping his wife Rani (Aliza Vellani) – an early sufferer of the Sick – alive with a special serum that an even cleverer doctor is managing somehow to produce in a local diner repurposed as a medical centre and (I guess?) research laboratory. But! They are down to the last two vials; the cleverer doctor is dying of cancer. She hands over her research notes to Dr Singh, so he can carry on the work.

He is horrified by what he finds therein. Could it be anything to do with the fact that the Real Men occasionally visit the diner and drop off hybrid-child-sized metal boxes? Who can say?

There is also a third plot strand, involving an introverted therapist who finds the post-pandemic world to her liking, goes to live in the abandoned zoo (don’t ask me) and ends up starting a sanctuary for the child-critters when someone abandons a pig-snouted baby (adorable! Want!) at her door.

There is more – including purple flowers that sprout when an area has been touched by the Sick, James Brolin voiceovers and a band of teenage environmental activists led by a Thunberg-esque Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen) – but I think you have the idea. Sweet Tooth is part fantasy, part sci-fi, part whimsy, part cold-eyed realism and most points in between. It is either warmly eccentric or hysterically crazy, perfect entertainment or a horrifying attempt to parlay the pandemic into a commercially palatable mashup. It is undoubtedly aimed at a younger-than-full-adult audience; my 10-year-old is entranced. I am, too, although I can’t yet work out why.

Sweet Tooth season 2: release date, trailer, confirmed cast and more

Sweet Tooth season 2 arrives on April 27 – here's everything you need to know ahead of the Netflix show's return

Wendy, Earl Elephant, Gus and Maya Monkey in Sweet Tooth season 2

  • Release date
  • Unresolved questions

- Lands on Netflix on April 27 - Based on graphic novel series of the same name - Developed by Jim Mickle - Stars Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, and Adeel Ahktar among others - Picks up straight after the first season - Official trailer revealed in early March - Third season yet to be greenlit

If Sweet Tooth season 2 feels like it’s been a long time coming, that’s because it has. Netflix’s big-budget adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s post-apocalyptic Vertigo comic was an unexpected hit when it landed in June 2021, and the streaming platform has now confirmed that the wait will end this April.

Sweet Tooth 's second season could be the perfect way to fill that Armageddon-shaped hole in your life – albeit in a slightly cuter, less gory way. The Netflix show’s set in a dangerous world still reeling from the aftermath of the so-called "Great Crumbl"” – the fall of civilization brought about by a global pandemic known simply as "the Sick". There are also lots of half human, half animal hybrid kids running around, who may or may not be connected to the fall of humanity.

Gus, a young Hybrid with the antlers and ears of a deer, becomes a target for General Abbot and his Last Men militia. Luckily, former football player Tommy 'Big Man' Jepperd has become the kid’s protector. But, with the duo kept apart by events in the season 1 finale, it looks like Sweet Tooth season 2 is going to be anything but plain sailing for Gus and the other Hybrids. From its confirmed release date to its official trailer, and its cast to its plot, here's what you need to know about the return of one of the best Netflix shows .

Sweet Tooth season 2 release date

Marlon Williams as Johnny Abbot and Neil Sandilands as General Abbot in Sweet Tooth season 2

Netflix has confirmed Sweet Tooth season 2 will be released on April 27.

The show's renewal wasn't a massive surprise. Not only did Sweet Tooth shoot straight to the top of the Netflix charts upon its initial June 2021 launch, the streamer also confirmed (via Deadline ) that the show was watched by more than 60 million member households during its first seven weeks.

Subsequently, the world's best streaming service took less than two months to confirm Sweet Tooth season 2 was happening, making the announcement via a video that played on its lead character’s love of candy:

Sweet Tooth season 2 trailer

Netflix released the first Sweet Tooth season 2 trailer on March 21. It's a surprisingly creepy affair and suggests we might be in store for a darker second act in the tradition of The Empire Strikes Back . There are scenes of Gus being subjected to experimentation, lots of other Hybrid kids in captivity (including newcomers like Earl Elephant), and hints that Jepperd and Aimee Eden might be about to mount a rescue.

However, as the General reminds Gus about his importance in finding a potential cure for "the Sick", the kid makes it clear that he’s ready to fight back. “My Pubba taught me, if I saw a human I should hide,” he says. “But I am done hiding!”

Sweet Tooth season 2 story

Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd and Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden in Sweet Tooth season 2

Going on the trailer, we expect Sweet Tooth season 2's story to pick up exactly where its predecessor left off – especially as the show has started to bring its key players together. That's seemingly echoed by the surprisingly comprehensive Sweet Tooth season 2 synopsis released by Netflix:

“As a deadly new wave of 'the Sick' bears down, Gus and a band of fellow Hybrids are held prisoner by General Abbot and the Last Men. Looking to consolidate power by finding a cure, Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr Aditya Singh, who’s racing to save his infected wife Rani. To protect his friends, Gus agrees to help Dr Singh, beginning a dark journey into his origins and his mother Birdie’s role in the events leading up to The Great Crumble.

“Outside the Preserve, Tommy Jepperd and Aimee Eden team up to break the Hybrids free, a partnership that will be tested as Jepperd’s secrets come to light. As the revelations of the past threaten the possibility of redemption in the present, Gus and his found family find themselves on a collision course with Abbot and the evil forces that look to wipe them out once and for all.”

Christian Convery as Gus and Adeel Akhtar as Dr Singh in Sweet Tooth season 2

Although the show is based on Jeff Lemire’s comic book series, the source material might not offer that many further clues about what to expect from Sweet Tooth season 2. Lemire’s story is much darker and more violent than the more family-oriented TV series, which makes some major changes from the page.

"The ambition was to create it for a family audience," producer Susan Downey told Variety . "We want the whole family to be able to watch together. We talked to Jeff Lemire about how Gus is our true north and how his journey and his relationship to Jep and this interesting cast of characters and challenges they meet along the way are what’s important.

"That’s when we brought [co-showrunner/director] Jim Mickle on and we talked about creating this storybook or fairytale dystopia – this idea that if there was a drastic reduction in population, nature would take over again and it would be green and lush. We all felt confident, and Jeff gave us the blessing that we were keeping what was important to the storytelling and putting it in a more palatable environment."

Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden in Sweet Tooth season 2

Beyond the shift in tone – "You can do different things with comics and with drawings that, if you were to do on screen, it would be beyond shocking," Lemire pointed out to the Daily Express – changes range from the minor (Jepperd was an ice hockey player in the comic, rather than a football star) to the fundamental (the characters of Bear and Aimee didn’t exist before the TV show). Other differences in Lemire’s comic include Jepperd handing Gus over to the Last Men, and the Animal Army being a group of adult fanatics, rather than the teen freedom fighters seen on TV.

And even though the Covid-19 pandemic didn't manage to significantly disrupt the show – season 1 was filmed in New Zealand while much of the world was living through lockdowns – Schwartz says real-life has been an inspiration on Sweet Tooth in some ways.

"In a way, [the pandemic] helped us," she admitted to RadioTimes.com . "We didn’t have to go too deep into explaining to our audience, ‘This is the pandemic. This is what happened.’ We could do it with simple nods, like the hand sanitizer, or the ‘6-feet apart’ sign that everyone kind of understood."

Sweet Tooth season 2 confirmed cast

Gus has a light shone on him by Doctor Aditya in Sweet Tooth season 2

Here's the Sweet Tooth season 2 cast list, as confirmed by Netflix:

  • Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd/Big Man
  • Christian Convery as Gus/Sweet Tooth
  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr Aditya Singh
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear/Rebecca Walker
  • Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden
  • Neil Sandilands as General Douglas Abbot
  • Marlon Williams as Johnny Abbot
  • Naledi Murray as Wendy
  • James Brolin as the Narrator

There'll also be plenty more Hybrid kids joining Gus in Sweet Tooth season 2 – some new, some returning from season 1. They'll include Yonas Kibreab as Finn Fox, Harvey Gui as Max Skunk, Aeon Scott as Anna Rabbit, Cyan Scott as Hanna Rabbit, Ruby Hall as Haley Mockingbird, Erin Minchin as Jo Jo Raccoon, Ravi Narayan as Earl Elephant, and Christopher Cooper Jr as Teddy Turtle. Amie Donald, who plays Maya Monkey, had another notable role recently as the titular child robot in smash-hit horror M3GAN .

While it's yet to be officially confirmed, we'd be very surprised if we don't see more from Amy Seimetz, after the season 1 finale hinted she still has a big part to play as Gus’ mom – or, more accurately, creator – Birdie. There could also be a return for Will Forte as Gus's late 'Pubba' if flashback sequences are required.

A screenshot of the main Hybrid children in Sweet Tooth season 2

There's also been plenty of speculation about whether the show's most famous producer, Robert Downey Jr, might join the Sweet Tooth season 2 cast – and who he could play if he ever decides to step in front of the camera.

"I think if our trio in the film became kind of a foursome and he just joined our band along the way and kind of helped us, and maybe helped us along the way in some way..." Anozie told ComicBook.com when asked who Downey could play. "I think a character that maybe didn't appear in the comic book, that he could actually come along and play. I actually think he would have made an interesting General Abbot as well, but I feel like Neil Sandilands has done such a great job in that. But if he was to come on, I think he'd have to join our gang, for sure."

What questions will Sweet Tooth season 2 answer?

Amy Seimetz's Birdie looks at someone off camera in Sweet Tooth

There are so many questions that need answering in Sweet Tooth season 2.

Most importantly, we need to find out why Birdie created human/deer Hybrid Gus (short for Genetic Unit Series 1), if/how his existence led to the birth of all of the other Hybrids, and if they’re connected to "the Sick" that has killed millions of people around the world.

With a cure for the disease also likely to be a key storyline, it would be helpful to know how close Dr Gladys Bell got to finding a cure – and how far Dr Aditya Singh is prepared to go to save his infected wife, Rani. Will he sacrifice Hybrid lives, or will his meeting with Gus change his outlook on the endeavor – even if it means attracting the wrath of the General?

Other questions on the need-to-know list include the reasons for Birdie’s trip to Alaska (is she working on a cure for "the Sick" of her own?), why those hallucinogenic purple flowers appear where people are infected, and whether Bear/Rebecca will be reunited with her Hybrid sister, Wendy.

We’re also expecting flashbacks to show us more about Gus’s early days, and to fill in the gaps between the birth of Jepperd’s Hybrid child and his first encounter with Gus – presumably explaining his decisions to join, and subsequently leave, the Last Men.

"I spoke to Jim Mickle, the director, about the character arc and where Tommy’s going to go in relation to some of [the flashbacks]," star Nonso Anozie teased in an interview with the Daily Express . "Some of it is going to be directly from the comic and some of it is going to be stuff that suits our audiences and suits the characters of the Sweet Tooth retelling."

And who knows, maybe Big Man will even get to try out the 'pass the ball' game Gus used to play with his Pubba.

Sweet Tooth

Gus may have antlers like a deer, but he’s a puppy dog at heart. The main character of Netflix’s new series Sweet Tooth , based on the comic by Jeff Lemire, is a young boy struggling to survive in a world ravaged by a pandemic. But while the world around him descends into chaos, Gus, played by Christian Convery, never loses his sense of wide-eyed optimism. His ears perk up — literally — if he hears about chocolate or candy apples, and he has an almost naive belief in people who shouldn’t always be trusted. At a time when we’re inundated with grim post-apocalyptic stories about how dark humanity can get, Sweet Tooth and its adorable lead offer something very welcome: hope.

Most of the set-up is familiar territory. A pandemic has killed off much of the human race, and those left behind are attempting to rebuild something resembling a society, some via force, others through community. What makes Sweet Tooth different are creatures called hybrids: human-animal mixtures that first appeared (birthed from human parents) at the same time the “sick,” as it’s called, began killing people. They’re absolutely adorable little things that would make Anne Geddes proud. But most people can’t seem to look past the apparent connection between hybrids and the pandemic — and this doesn’t bode well for the hybrids.

Gus doesn’t know much about any of this. At the outset of the show, the deer-child lives in an isolated cabin with his father, who teaches him what he’ll need to know to survive. Gus is forced to learn a series of rules — mostly, they involve running away from danger and staying quiet — while his dad teaches him how to farm, fix things, and even read via handmade versions of classic books he rewrites from memory. Gus believes that the world outside of their charmed plot of land is consumed by fire. Because of this, he’s never supposed to go beyond the fence that surrounds them. But, for reasons that I won’t spoil (but which you can probably guess), Gus ends up leaving the property and traveling with a big man known primarily as Big Man (Nonso Anozie) in search of the mother he’s never actually met.

Sweet Tooth

“We wanted to make sure that humanity wasn’t depicted in just such a dark, foreboding way.” — executive producer Amanda Burrell on crafting the world of Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth starts slow, and it’s better off for it. Early on, the show doesn’t seem too concerned with the larger mysteries of the sickness, the hybrids, or how the two connect. There’s a side story involving a troubled doctor that becomes more important later on, but for the first few episodes the show is almost entirely about Gus. First, his almost idyllic life at home, as he celebrates birthdays with new books and handmade stuffed animals. The vibe is warm and comforting, with lots of cozy sweaters, wood cabins, and roaring fireplaces — and just a hint of danger lurking in the background. (Executive producer Amanda Burrell previously described the show’s aesthetic as “ storybook dystopia .”) Even after he ventures out into the big, scary outside world, things aren’t particularly dark; this isn’t the kind of post-apocalyptic world littered with discarded bodies and horrible monsters. It’s our world, just a bit quieter and greener. And with a few roving gangs.

It’s not just the aesthetic that makes the show inviting, though. It’s Gus himself. He’s such a sweet and trusting kid that you can’t help but root for him. Even when things get dark — and they will — he maintains a sense of optimism that’s rare for this kind of story. I especially love that you can see his mood; Gus is mostly human, but, as mentioned before, he has the antlers and ears of a deer. So when he’s feeling sad or excited, his ears will perk up or lay flat depending on his emotional state. It’s adorable.

this a sweet tooth

Gus being this warm, comforting emotional core is important, because Sweet Tooth does eventually reveal its darker side. After a few episodes, the layers start to peel back, revealing things like militarized forces hoarding supplies, the systematic hunting and exploitation of hybrid children, and well-meaning doctors who will do anything, no matter how grisly, to find a cure for the virus. These are balanced out by other factions, like a zoo that’s been transformed into a hybrid sanctuary, and a rowdy army of kids living free of adult supervision.

The problem is that most of this is crammed into the second half of the eight-episode season, throwing off the pacing. Sweet Tooth steadily goes from a slow burn that lingers on characters and moments, to a race to explain the many mysteries of the disease, hybrids, and Gus’s origin. The season also ends on a massive cliffhanger, making it feel a bit like a prologue, rather than a standalone story.

At its most confident, Sweet Tooth is remarkable. Post-apocalyptic settings are so commonplace that they’re almost generic at this point; grim, gray worlds punctuated by blood and gore (and the occasional zombie). Sweet Tooth manages to carve out its own space, one that’s incredibly inviting. I just wish it kept up that feeling through the later half of the season. When the show devolves into mystery and action, it loses much of what makes it unique — but at least Gus is still there to help you make it through.

Sweet Tooth debuts on Netflix on June 4th.

‘Sweet Tooth’ Season 3 Renewed at Netflix; What We Know So Far

Our guide to everything known about the third and final season of Sweet Tooth.

Kasey Moore What's on Netflix Avatar

Sweet Tooth season 3 has now been officially confirmed with the new season having filmed in secret in late 2022 and into early 2023. Here’s everything you need to know about the show’s final season coming soon to Netflix.

First debuting on Netflix in 2021, Sweet Tooth is the DC adaptation series of Jeff Lemire’s popular comic series that was bound for Hulu at one point. Season 2 of the show touched down on Netflix globally on April 27th, 2023.

Has Netflix Renewed or Canceled Sweet Tooth ?

Official Renewal Status: Renewed (Last updated: 05/03/2023)

Just a few days after the second season debuted on Netflix, the streamer confirmed that season 3 would be on the way and also confirmed that it’d be the final season.

Of course, loyal readers of What’s on Netflix will know that season 3 of Sweet Tooth was coming for quite some time. We’ve been tracking developments on the show and published in February 2023 that the show had received an early renewal citing numerous people tied to the production.

Jim Mickle confirmed that seasons 2 and 3 had been shot back to back in a Tweet following Netflix officially announcing the news , saying, “Been sitting on this news for a loooong time. For those wondering why it took so long to make Season 2… it’s because we made TWO seasons back-to-back”

In a statement released by Netflix, Mickle said:

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”

How well is Sweet Tooth Season 2 Performing on Netflix?

Thanks to Netflix’s top 10s and numerous other third-party stats, we can do a pretty deep dive into stats for Sweet Tooth season 2 in the coming weeks and months.

Let’s first dive into Netflix’s own official hours for the show, which we sadly don’t have an accurate comparison with season 1 to see how much of a rise/drop there was. The only stat released for season 1 was that 60 million households watched within 28 days.

Nevertheless, here’s how the top 10 hours break down thus far:

In our top 10 report for the first week of Sweet Tooth S2 being included, we found that when using CVE (hours watched divided by the runtime), the show just sat between Sex/Life and Shadow & Bone .

Alongside the initial season 3 announcement, Netflix confirmed four casting changes/additions:

  • Rosalind Chao ( Better Things, Mulan ) as Zhang has been upped to a series regular
  • Amy Seimetz ( No Sudden Move , Pet Sematary ) as Birdie upped to a series regular.
  • Cara Gee ( The Expanse, Call Of The Wild ) joins as a new series regular.
  • Ayazhan Dalabayeva as Nuka, joins as a new series regular.

Also expected to return for the new season are:

  • Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd
  • Christian Convery as Gus
  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Aditya Singh
  • Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear
  • James Brolin as the Narrator

What to Expect from Sweet Tooth Season 3

Thus far, we only know that season 3 will be an “Arctic story,” with showrunner Jim Mickle saying in a statement:

“Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”

So that leads us to speculation on what we can expect from the forthcoming third and final season:

Will Gus meet his Mom?

By the end of the season Gus, Jepperd, Becky, and Wendy have set out from Wyoming and will be traveling all the way to Alaska.

As the potential key to the cure of the Sick aka the H5G9 Virus, it’s imperative for the rest of the human race that Gus is able to make it to Alaska and help his mom, Birdie, to develop a cure.

Will Dr. Singh attempt to kidnap Gus?

Dr. Singh became so obsessed with his work that it repulsed his wife, Rani, who ultimately left him in season 2, and destroyed his research.

Rather than trying to find his wife, Dr. Singh is pursuing Gus instead, determined to continue his research. There may come an opportunity for Dr. Singh to strike when their guard is down, but chances will be slim.

Alternatively, if Dr. Singh learns that Birdie is alive, he may throw is eggs into that basket, and try to continue his research by helping her find a cure. However, if Birdie is alive, the chances of letting a man help her who caused such harm to her son are incredibly slim.

Is Birdie actually alive?

The biggest question is whether or not Birdie is actually alive.

Considering we’re yet to see Birdie in the flesh, there’s still no guarantee that she is alive and well. A tragic twist of fate would be for Gus and the group to find where’s supposed to be living, only to discover she is dead or missing.

What’s in Zhang’s cage?

It’s more than likely that the creatures inside her cage are hybrids. In particular, hybrids that are part-predator.

As the series has deviated from the comics, the creatures in the cage could be ‘The Dog Boys’ a group of cannibalistic dog-hybrid children who were cruelly raised to be nothing more than weapons.

If Zhang goes after Gus, then expect her to bring her ravenous hybrid pets to hunt them down.

The Sweet Treats Collection is serving up caramel apples and key lime pie and making it ~fashun~.

glamnetics press on nails

If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

Late last month, Glamnetic — a brand housing formidable and stylish press-on nails and lashes — launched an absolutely adorable new line of nails with a dessert-centric twist for spring: the Sweet Treats Collection . With names like Caramel Apple, Key Lime Pie, and Blueberry Icing, you know this has to be good. And let me tell you, bestie, it is.

Glamnetic Sweet Treats Collection

Sweet Treats Collection

The collection features six sets of nails, three of which are cool takes on the French mani . Caramel Apple is one of those three, and it immediately piqued my interest, so I decided to give it a spin. I’m actually wearing them as I write this, and I can tell you, they are simply stunning, with a holographic base and coppery, short oval tips that don’t make it hard to text or type. Truly, what makes Glamnetic’s nails stand out above other brands for me is how much they function like they’re my nails; I rarely have to worry about if I'm going to do something that causes them to fall off way too early (like button my pants or shampoo my hair). Plus, the brand claims you should be able to get a solid two weeks out of this set. I haven’t worn this set that long yet, but with previous Glamnetic sets I've tried, that claim has absolutely held up.

But if you’re not interested in French tips, there’s also the creamy solid-toned Yellow Pop, the somewhat psychedelic-patterned Jelly Bean, and the futuristic glam Whipped. Or, if you like the sound of them all, you can go all in and purchase the entire collection and get 25% off! Honestly, the more nails to choose from, the better.
