  • This thesis explores the actions and impact of the Charleston-based secessionist propaganda machine known as the 1860 Association. A handful of elite South Carolina slaveholders organized in the months leading up to the election of 1860 and operated, as the 1860 Association, with the goal of persuading fellow white Southerners to support immediate state secession. This thesis seeks to uncover not only the rhetorical and propaganda strategies employed by the 1860 Association, but also the impact of their campaign on the broader secession movement. I argue that by relying on the tenets of proslavery ideology and subverting class tension in favor of white racial unity, the 1860 Association persuasively presented secession as both the South’s only remaining path forward and as a rational and defensive action. This thesis demonstrates that the 1860 Association’s propaganda campaign was prolific, strategic, and had a clear impact on the secession movement across the South.
