Harmatan and Oakridge Leathers 2008 Ltd. manufacture fine goatskin and calfskin bookbinding leathers.

All our leathers are created using traditional methods at our small, highly specialised tannery at Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, UK - an area traditionally associated with the production of leather and leather goods. From here our quality leathers are distributed worldwide to a diverse range of clients who enjoy working with these fine skins.

Please note that we do not sell any of our products via eBay. Please beware of cheaper but poorly or incorrectly tanned bookbinding leather you may see advertised on the internet.

Simply superb! I was slightly hesitant at first as there are cheaper bookbinding kits available but this one looked like it ticked all the boxes. It arrived beautifully packaged and the contents look & feel extremely high quality as promised. The instruction guide is BRILLIANT, each step is so well explained and the photographs make it all so easy to follow. Highly recommended!!

Ruth Carter – March 6, 2018

I received this kit for Christmas and made my first book yesterday. It is absolutely great! The quality of the equipment you get is very good (e.g the scissors are all metal and packaged nicely) The instructions for making the books is very, very simple and written in a way which is easy to understand. Which made making the book a very nice process. Honestly so pleased I received this as a gift and I will make many more!

Stevie – March 11, 2018

This is a wonderfully thought out kit containing everything you need. I attended one of the introductory workshops and it has been great to be able to practice the skill knowing that I have everything to hand.

Fleur – June 8, 2019

A brilliantly well put together kit. There’s everything you need in the box to make 2 beautiful A5 books. And the full instructions can be downloaded online. The book materials, tools, and online instructions are a particular delight. The instructions are clear, detailed, and very well photographed. I’ll be buying more refills too – the materials are beautiful. Thank you.

Debbie Stubbington – May 24, 2020

Amazing! I’ve always loved stationery and being able to actually create my own notebook takes that love to a whole new level. Everything I needed and very clear instructions. So pleased with my finished notebook. Looking forward to making the second one tomorrow! Thank you for giving me a whole new hobby in lockdown!!

Beautiful kit! I opened the box and within two and half hours I had made my first book! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

Alishba – December 28, 2020

I bought this based on Learnbookbinding’s facebook page. I stumbled across this when their ad popped up. I browsed their facebook page and decided to give it a go as it seemed like a legit website. I ordered the starter kit not having a clue what this would involve.

The starter kit arrived quickly, it came with very detailed instructions with pictures. It was so easy to follow and I managed to bind 2 books (starter pack comes with enough to make 2 books – value for money!). The paper inside the books are fantastic quality and are the book cloths. I am now awaiting my refill packs to make more, I have already recommended this to a friend who was interested in how I made both of my books. I now blame the owners of this fantastic business for getting me hooked onto this new craft of mine! 😀

' src=

Bridget – January 7, 2021

This kit is fabulous. You get everything you need to make two lovely books with the most comprehensive instructions I have ever seen. The tools can all be reused and nothing is left out.

The results are astounding and anyone can make a professional-looking book.

I am completely hooked and have already stocked up on refills to keep me occupied!

' src=

Jess – January 12, 2021

The instructions were so clear, I managed to make 2 books without needing any extra supplies (except a few sheets of scrap paper!) and they turned out pretty good for my first try! Absolutely recommend this kit.

' src=

naghma1247 – January 15, 2021

I recently purchased the ‘Complete Bookbinding Starter Kit’ as well as the ‘Sketchbook’ pack.

Everything I have received is of an exceptional standard. From the extremely well packaged kit right the way through to the detailed step-by-step instructions. It’s clear that a lot of thought and attention to detail has gone into this.

My preference would always be to attend a workshop in person, however being able to follow the instructions at my own pace and in the comfort of my own space definitely has had its advantages. I’ve just completed making my first A5 book and can’t wait to have a go at the sketchbook now.

Hoping that there will be workshops that I can attend in the near future. In the meantime I will no doubt be back to purchase more supplies.

' src=

Estelle – January 21, 2021

I really enjoyed this. The instructions are clear and well illustrated, the tools are good quality and the papers are beautiful. I’ve made the two books from the kit and learnt a lot each time. The second one wasn’t perfect but was better than the first (which still wasn’t bad – both were given as Christmas presents). I’ll definitely be ordering supplies to make more.

' src=

Amy – February 18, 2021

Very well packaged, comprehensive kit! The tools and materials all feel like they’re very good quality and the instructions are marvellous, with very detailed steps, thoroughly photographed for every single action so you always have a visual guide to go with the clearly worded text.

Customer service was great too, very helpful and the dispatch and delivery was much quicker than anyone could ask for these days.

I highly enjoyed embarking on the process of learning to make my own notebooks with this kit, and would 11/10 recommend it to anyone looking to get into the craft as well!

' src=

Liesbeth – April 22, 2021

I have found a new obsession! I had been looking for a good way to get into bookbinding, but all the kits I found were either unclear or incomplete. Until I found this golden grail: detailed and clear instructions, and *everything* in the box (minus some cans to weigh down your project). I’m hooked, and I’ve talked a bunch of other people into ordering theirs to join in the fun!

' src=

Fen – May 31, 2021

This was wonderful! I loved this kit so much, it’s a little more pricey but definitely worth your money if you’re just starting out. It give you everything you need to make 2 notebooks, as well as detailed instructions and quality tools to help you through your crafting. I would highly recommend this to anyone starting to make books, as it’s a wonderfully easy introduction, and has definitely got me hooked. Here’s to many more books in the future!

Naghma – February 24, 2022

A high-quality, well put-together bookbinding starter kit containing everything needed to produce 2 books. I’ve loved making up the books and I’m hoping to purchase a few refill packs so that I can make gifts for some friends. The step-by-step instructions are excellent and whilst nothing can beat an in-person course with a teacher at hand, these were detailed enough that I didn’t really get stuck; the ability to zoom into the images was a definite bonus. I had a few minor queries and these were answered very quickly. Thank you for giving me a glimpse into a wonderful new hobby/skill. It has been money and time well spent!

' src=

Nicola Bagworth – February 13, 2023

Superb kit, loved everything about it, great quality tools and supplies. Excellent instructions.

Beautiful kit, superb quality tools, all packed so well, the instructions are very easy to follow and in depth, thank you so much, the owner of the shop responded to a question extremely quickly, highly recommended

' src=

Charlotte Beddows – March 15, 2023

I received this kit as a gift from my husband for Christmas, and after a busy month I finally got around to getting stuck in! Just to pre-warn everyone, this is an ADDICTIVE hobby and very relaxing! Such a quality kit, from the instructions to the equipment included. The photographs along with the easy to understand instructions made this whole process so enjoyable and fun. Thank you so much, will definitely recommend and return in the future!

' src=

Bryan – September 24, 2023

I bought this as I was interested in having a go. I found it simple to follow, everything I needed came with it and I have received amazing feedback even to my first attempt. Very easy to recommend

' src=

Cindy Wrapson – December 2, 2023

Can’t thank you enough for allowing me to select specific papers as it was a gift for somebody. Beautifully packaged. So excited to give it as a Christmas gift and I’m sure my friend will love it. Brilliant customer service. Thank you! 😊

' src=

Debbie – December 11, 2023

A wonderful starter kit and I thoroughly enjoyed making my first books, so much so that I’ve just ordered a batch of refill packs! The instructions were comprehensive and the kit has everything you need to get started. I now have a new hobby that combines a love of sewing, stationery and creating something beautiful!

' src=

Danka – December 14, 2023

Absolutely amazing kit! This was bought as a gift for a friend who wanted to learn how to start bookbinding and she loved it! So much care put into choosing the right tools, plus Jon-Paul was incredibly helpful. Cannot recommend enough!!

' src=

Chloe – January 6, 2024

I was gifted this kit for Christmas and absolutely loved it. The instructions are super detailed with clear photos and the contents of the box were high quality, even down to the little metal tin of PVA glue. My sister and I spent the best part of a day putting our books together and it almost felt like a crafting workshop as we never felt stuck on how the next step worked. This kit allows you to try book binding without the need for a teacher so I’d say it’s worth the cost. A lovely surprise gift, particularly as I love trying out new crafting activities. I’m really pleased with the result and it’s given me a new found appreciation for all the work that goes into creating a notebook!

For which documents is the leather book binding particularly suitable?

Leather book binding is used primarily for larger and more significant pieces of work. Thanks to the book-like appearance and the high quality, robust cover, your work will stand out from the rest.

We recommend leather binding for the following types of academic work:

  • Dissertation

How is the leather binding produced?

Leather book binding consists of two cardboard sheets for the front and back covers and a cardboard strip for the spine. The cardboard elements are then covered with leather binding. The material differs from premium to standard leather binding.

The pages are glued together along with two stable end pages, and then glued to the leather binding. You can configure your thesis in the online print shop to fit your personal preferences.

A beginner's guide to book binding

Learn how to make custom notebooks with this centuries-old crafting technique

young adult woman making a notebook japanese binding style

Different styles of book binding

Book binding materials you need, book binding kits.

Crafting is a great way to take a break from your screen and step away from the digital world for a bit. If you're looking for a fun new craft to try that is about as far away from all things digital as you can get, you'll love the age-old art of book binding!

We're not talking about the massive medieval-style leather-bound books you'd find in the British Library (although you could give that a go if you like!), instead, we're talking about the various simple book binding techniques crafters of all ages and skill levels can try to turn loose sheets of paper into beautiful and functional books.

Whether you're interested in picking up the techniques of a centuries old tradition, want to be able to use your creative talents to make something functional from start to finish or are looking for a way to upcycle leftover paper from other projects – book binding is a fantastic skill to learn, and our beginner's guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started!

young adult woman making a notebook japanese binding style

What is book binding: How to bind a book

Book binding is the practice of taking loose sheets of paper and turning them into a functional and pretty book. It's a craft with a rich history dating back centuries, with the Romans being the first to create books using papyrus bound between wooden boards.

Today, book binding covers a wide range of techniques, from simple pamphlet-stitch notebooks to elaborate decorative bindings and intricate covers that people can spend weeks working on.

Book binding is a great way for crafters to create one-of-a-kind notebooks while putting their own creative spin on a traditional craft.

There are lots of different styles of book binding, but here are three beginner-friendly techniques you can try at home:

Pamphlet stitch

This is the ideal starting point for anyone new to book binding, as shown by @immaginacijabindery on Instagram. Pamphlet stitch is incredibly simple to do, and it's perfect for creating small notebooks.

You start by folding your paper into signatures (groups of pages), nesting them together on top of your cover, measuring out binding holes at equal spacings down the middle fold, making holes with an awl and then sewing the pages together with a simple running style stitch.

This technique of book binding is a great way to use up scrap paper and turn them into handy little notebooks; it's also a great craft for older kids who can be trusted with a needle and thread.

Japanese stab binding

If you want to try a more decorative approach, then Japanese stab binding, as shown by @sealemon on Instagram, is a beautiful option.

Instead of using signatures, you can use single sheets of paper. Sandwich your single pages in between the front and back cover sheets and then punch holes for threading around an inch in from the book's edge. You then stitch the book together through the holes you made, working in a pattern from top to bottom and from the back to the front of the book.

The exposed thread becomes a design element, adding a unique touch to your handmade book.

Coptic stitch

Stepping up a bit in complexity, the Coptic stitch gives a more robust binding that is good for making thicker books. Books made with a Coptic stitch can lay completely flat when opened, making them ideal for sketchbooks or journals.

For this technique, as demonstrated by @nubbynotes on Instagram, signatures are laid in groups on top of each other rather than slotting inside one another. Each set of signatures is stitched together one by one and secured with a sewn knot. The exposed spine creates a beautiful and visible stitch pattern.

To get started with a simple book binding project you will need:

  • Paper – Plain pieces of paper to make up your inside pages and then a decorative sheet for your covers. Why not make your own decorative paper using this easy shaving foam marbling technique
  • Cutting mat – A sturdy cutting mat protects your work surface while you cut paper and other materials. Look for one with a grid for accurate measuring and straight cuts.
  • Craft knife – A sharp craft knife allows you to cut paper to size precisely. Opt for a hobby knife with replaceable blades for safety and control.
  • Glue – PVA glue works fine for simple book binding projects, it's best to have a glue spreader or wooden lolly stick to hand when using it to get a nice thin coat. Pritt stick can also be useful for holding parts of the project in place temporarily.
  • Clips – You can get specialist book binding clamps but for small projects fold back bull dog clips work great.
  • Binding needle – A binding needle looks like a more sturdy version of a regular sewing needle. They have a rounded tip similar to a darning needle and a large eye to accommodate thicker thread.
  • Thread – Strong good quality thread is crucial to keeping your binding together and looking neat. Linen or cotton thread is ideal; just be sure to choose a thickness that suits your binding technique.
  • Bone folder – This smooth, blunt tool is your secret weapon for creating clean folds and creases in your paper. It helps you precisely fold signatures and flatten glued areas without damaging your paper.
  • Awl – An awl is a pointed tool that creates holes in material. You could just use a needle for this but awls come with thick handles that are easy to grip making it more accurate and safer to use.

Guide to Bookbinding Leathers

Not sure which bookbinding leather to choose?

When it comes to selecting leather there are many options to choose from.

Below is a guide to navigating our selection of hides, but we are always available by phone or email to discuss your specific requirements.

Tanning is a method of using specific chemicals derived from minerals, plant matter, or oils that fix to the fibers of a skin to prevent bacteria and atmospheric conditions from breaking it down.

The selection of leathers that TALAS provides are traditionally vegetable tanning agents (environmentally friendly not using chemicals), which provides longevity of the leather and aniline dyed, suitable for gilding and blind embossing.

The process of tanning is labor intensive, and takes about one month from raw hide to final trimming and measuring.  In a nutshell, the process includes dehairing (cleaning the hide), fleshing (evening and cleaning the backs), tanning, drying, dyeing (using aniline dyes), and finally finishing!

* Leather paring is the process of thinning leather to make it suitable for bookbinding.

Calf are larger skins, with a smooth finish and a fine grain that shows off tooling to great advantage. The surface is absorbent and lends itself well to additional dyeing. Ideal for larger templates.

Sheep is the softest and most pliable skin, also with a smooth surface, which can make it vulnerable to damage. They have historically been very popular for use in full leather bindings , and are an economic alternative to goat or calf.

Most leather hides are broken down in different qualities.  Qualities differ between tanneries, but are typically 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

1st – Leathers with no discernible scuffs or imperfections in the workable area

2nds – Leathers with very minor imperfections, slight irregularities in dye, shape, or finish

3rds – Leathers that have small holes or pronounced imperfections in the workable area

All of our hides are sold by the square foot, which includes the neck and feet. These are natural products and each hide will differ slightly as to its yield.

Please contact us if you have a specific template size and we will try our best to find a hide that meets your needs.

Different grain patterns can offer a range of both visual and tactile textures without affecting other qualities of the leather.

Shrunken – a grain that has been enlarged and enhanced by “shrinking” the hides, also referred to as “levant” grain. The grain most typical to bookbinding. (Ex: Hewit Cheiftain )

Hand Boarded – a boarded grain leather has been worked in two directions to give the natural grain a smaller, tighter, pebbled effect. (Ex: French Chagreen , Alran )

Skins referred to as “Fair” are undyed and suitable for custom dying. Hewit aniline dyes can be purchased here .

For customers in search of white hides, we carry a pigmented white goat leather in the French Chagreen, as well as a selection of Alum tawed skins that display the characteristic natural white of the tawing process.

Manufacturers

Russells Oasis:   This tannery is located in the UK that has been tanning leathers for more than 60 years.  It is known for the following types that TALAS proudly stocks:

Russell’s Oasis Goatskins are produced in a wide range of colors with a natural grain, averaging 5 – 8 square feet and available in 1sts, 2nds and 3rds. Restoration Calf by Russells are full hide skins in a selection of natural and dyed neutrals. A valuable alternative at a economical price.

Harmatan Leathers are created using tradition methods in the UK.  Established in the 1980s to supply the finest quality vegetable tanned goatskins and smooth grained calfskins specifically for bookbinders.

Harmatan Goatskins are produced in an equally large range of colors with a natural grain, averaging 4 – 5 square feet and available in 1sts, 2nds and 3rds. Harmatan skins are known for their signature modulated coloration. Harmatan also produces Kaduna (embossed)   Katsina (pigmented) and Morocco Grain (embossed).

J Hewit & Sons has a 200 year history of manufacturing the highest quality leathers for bookbinding and leathergoods production.  It is a family run business that is now on its 7th generation, also located in the UK.

J Hewit & Son Chieftain Goatskins are produced from the hide of larger goat, averaging 6 – 9 square feet, with a “shrunken” grain, a natural polished finish, available in 1sts and 2nds. Hewit Bookcalf Calfskins are produced by J Hewit & Sons, the world’s most renowned tannery for bookbinding calfskins. The unique production of these leathers involves a final finishing on plate glass which gives these skins an incredibly smooth and polished aesthetic. They average 7 – 10 square feet, and are available in 1sts, 2nds, and 3rds. Repair Calf by Hewit are half kip sides produced in a selection of historic browns, and have a more matte, rustic finish and are suitable for repair and conservation work. They average 6 – 9 square feet and are available in 2nds and 3rds.

French Chagreen Goatskins are available in an extensive range of attractive colors, averaging 4 – 5 square feet, hand-boarded and of the highest quality. French Split Goatskins have a natural grain, average 4 – 6 square feet, are available in 1sts and 2nds and do not require paring, having been pre-split to a thin substance.

Alran Goatskins are produced to TALAS specifications, averaging 4 – 6 square feet, hand-boarded, available in 1sts and 2nds. An economic alternative to the French Chagreen.

Franz Hoffmann  (also referred to as Gutenberg Fine Leather), a more recent supplier of fine leathers to TALAS.  The range of product from this supplier is very extensive and includes the following:

Franz Hoffmann Split Goatskin s range from undyed to mineral tanned and  a small range of basic colors.   Ideal for book covering and do not require paring, average : 4-9 sqft.
