What our students say…

The main factor that persuaded me to pursue a PhD at UWL was the opportunity to work with supervisors, who are both experts in their field and to be part of a university with a great reputation. My doctoral experience at the University of West London was outstanding. The university offers everything you need as a student to succeed in your studies and I received a huge amount of support. Also, the library provides a fantastic study environment.

All students will need at least one device to approve security access requests via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We also recommend students have a suitable laptop to work both on and off-campus. For more information, please check the equipment advice .

As a student on this course, you should factor some additional costs into your personal budget, including any running costs for your project such as printing or equipment, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses. You should be able to access most of the books you’ll need through our libraries, though you may wish to purchase your own copies or more specific titles.

The school contributes to some costs relating to conference/course attendance and some research consumables. The full cost of your course will vary depending on the nature of your research project, for example there may be additional costs for projects which require specific equipment or travel and you’ll need to have sourced funds for this.

King's College London

Midwifery research with option of joint phd with hku or nus mphil/phd, key information.

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care at King's is a world-leading centre for applied and allied healthcare, clinical research and education. Our focus is on training the healthcare leaders and researchers of the future, with a strong commitment to providing postgraduate programmes of the highest quality. The faculty offers research programmes at MPhil and PhD level. In preparing students to become knowledgeable and competent researchers, supervision is provided by academic staff with expertise in a wide range of research and clinical areas.

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care is regarded as a centre of excellence for nursing and midwifery, achieving high scores in research and teaching quality assessments. The first MPhil/PhD students enrolled in the late 1970s and since then the faculty has expanded steadily its range of high quality graduate education programmes to meet the needs of increasingly well-educated healthcare professionals who wish to continue their education to support and develop their careers.

The purpose of our research is to improve the quality of services and outcomes for patients through studies concerned with individual clinical needs, service delivery and organisation and the wider social and policy context of care, nationally and internationally. Our research work is underpinned by cross cutting principles: engagement with patient and user perspectives, commitment to conceptual and methodological innovation, attention to the policy relevance and practical application of our findings through interventions.

The faculty is an integral partner within King’s Health Partners (KHP) and contributes to the interdisciplinary research centres in supporting and delivering high quality research.

Our results in the latest REF (Research Excellence Framework, the UK’s system for assessing research quality in universities) highlighted the combined strength and impact of applied health research at King’s. Of the 89 submissions made by UK universities to the REF’s Unit of Assessment 3 (UoA3), King’s was 1st for overall research rated 4* (the highest possible mark), 1 st for number of research outputs being rated 3* or 4* with 206.87 papers awarded these ratings, 1st for impact rated 4* with 86.4% of impact case studies rated 4*, and 1st for Grade Point Average and Power.

Our research activity is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Research Councils and a range of charities. We host a range of nationally competitive fellowships from PhD studentship to post-doctoral level.

PhD Research Projects

PhD projects in the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care become available all year round. Please visit our postgraduate research page , where you can browse through the current opportunities. The faculty is especially interested in receiving applications from students across the globe, who are planning their doctoral research projects in fields that will contribute to the faculty’s research groups, enhance the research culture and align with the faculty’s research strategy.

Joint PhDs - Benefits of collaboration

The Joint PhD is an innovative integrated programme that offers unique opportunities for the very best PhD supervision in an international context. The programme offered provides candidates with the opportunity to divide their PhD study between three prestigious universities (King’s, the University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore), enjoying full supervision at both. While supervisions and regular graduate seminars enable students to construct a theoretical, historical and systematic framework for their research, the Joint PhD also organizes international colloquia and workshops at which students can present and discuss their work with peers and academic staff across the institutions involved. The programme builds on an extensive network of existing institutional links, joint teaching experience and collaborative graduate programmes between King’s and our partner universities.

Base campus

Waterloo Campus

Waterloo campus is home of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery and facilities for other faculties

The Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care offers a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. In the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) 2015, results for the Faculty indicated that student experience was positive about all aspects of supervision, skills and development, infrastructure, intellectual climate, and knowledge of roles and responsibilities within the Faculty. Research students are allocated a supervisory team led by an experienced principal supervisor. The team meet regularly with the student for supervision and review of progress. Progress is also reviewed formally by the Faculty Postgraduate Research Students Committee at set points in the academic year. Supervisors provide advice on training needs and career development. Student representatives for full-time and part-time students play an important role in communicating student feedback about learning experiences and the support infrastructure to inform ongoing programme development. Research students have a study suite in the James Clerk Maxwell Building and access to Graduate Lounges on the different campuses.

Students on the MPhil/PhD programme are immersed in the academic culture and are encouraged to engage in a wide range of learning opportunities. Students will normally undertake two core research methods modules: Advanced quantitative research methods offers an in-depth study of quantitative research methods including epidemiological studies and randomised controlled trials, and Advanced qualitative research methods offers an in-depth study of different qualitative methods and their relationship to epistemological theory. Students can also access doctoral training courses organised by King's Graduate School and the ESRC training centre where places permit, and all students are encouraged to become actively involved in research seminars and fora. Research students are encouraged to present their doctoral research at conferences and a School competition fund exists to support this.

Support for Postgraduate Research Students within the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care

  • A model of three-supervisors has been introduced to improve students’ support and access to clinical and methodological expertise. Where appropriate and required, MPhil/PhD students within the Faculty will be provided with a team of three supervisors.
  • Research methods training modules offered by the Faculty itself include Advanced Quantitative Research Methods; Advanced Qualitative Research Methods; Evidence Based Decision Making in Healthcare; Research Methods and Statistics; and Epidemiology.
  • Our own Nightingale-Saunders Clinical Trials & Epidemiology Unit offers an advanced level of expertise on quantitative topics of which students can avail.
  • In addition, our MPhil/PhD students have access to a wide range of supplementary courses and activities, including workshops, symposia and funding offered by Centre of Doctoral Studies, the Health Sciences Doctoral Training Centre (HSDTC) and the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP).
  • The Faculty also runs three Journal Clubs (for Nursing & Midwifery, Mental Health and the Cecily Saunders Institute of Palliative Care respectively) and students have an opportunity to participate in fortnightly research seminar programmes delivered by one of the research divisions. Students’ active involvement in developing the range of activities and their delivery is strongly encouraged.

Doctoral Thesis Collection

midwifery phd funding

This midwifery PhD thesis collection is an exciting new initiative for the RCM.

The aim of the collection is to provide a platform for midwives to showcase their academic work, and to inspire and support midwives who are considering or who are currently undertaking further academic study. Additionally, the collection will provide a source of open access midwifery generated evidence for everyone to use.

The opportunity for midwives to include details of the resultant publications and their social media details and institutional link, if appropriate will hopefully also support the creation of professional networks related to their academic interests. Authors may have also published articles from their thesis, so please use an author’s contact details to ask about this.

If you are a midwife and have a completed a PhD and would like to include your thesis in this collection, please complete the online form below.

If you would like to search the Thesis Collection, "Control+F" (or "Command+F" on a Mac) is the keyboard shortcut for the Find command. Pressing the Ctrl/Command key + the F key will bring up a search box in the top right corner of your screen. You can then use this to search the Collection for keywords.

2024 postgraduate scholarships

midwifery phd funding

Applications for 2024 postgraduate scholarships are now closed

About the scholarships.

The Nursing and Midwifery Office supports nursing and midwifery scholarships which are administered by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI).

Scholarships of up to $10,000 are offered to registered nurses and midwives who are studying a postgraduate course. The amount awarded varies and depends on study type and whether the program is already subsidised.

The scholarships help with educational expenses directly associated with postgraduate study. They are open to those working permanently in full- or part-time positions in the NSW public health system. Casual employees of NSW Health may be eligible. See eligibility criteria for more information.

Scholarships are awarded through a competitive selection process and not all applicants will be successful. The scholarship will not cover all costs associated with a program of study.

Nursing and Midwifery postgraduate scholarships offered in 2024 are a single payment. The amount depends on the postgraduate qualification that you're studying.

Scholarships contribute to the cost of courses at the following levels:

Terms and conditions

You can only get one scholarship per program of study.

For example:

Ms Jones is awarded a $8,000 scholarship in 2024 towards her Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing. She finishes the Graduate Diploma and in 2026 decides to upgrade to a Masters in Intensive Care Nursing. Ms Jones can't apply for another scholarship because the first one was also for Intensive Care Nursing, which is the same program of study.

You can only get one scholarship in a three-year timeframe

Ms Jones enrols in a Graduate Diploma in 2024 and plans to do the course over three years. If she is awarded $8,000 for study in 2024, she can't apply for another scholarship until 2027.

Scholarships are not awarded for:

  • research projects
  • courses studied outside Australia
  • Graduate Certificate courses that are fully funded by the Nursing and Midwifery Office and managed by the Health Education and Training Institute

HETI Higher Education Mental Health scholarships including:

Child and Youth Mental Health Services (CYMHS) scholarships

Older People's Mental Health (OPMH) scholarships

Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care and Practice (8ALF008) scholarships.

Eligibility

To apply you must be:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
  • currently employed and working permanently full-time or part-time as a registered nurse or registered midwife within the NSW public health system. You may also be a casual employee - defined as working in NSW Health for at least 12 months, working on average 2 days per week. Note: If you're a midwifery student, you must instead show proof of having concurrent employment in a recognised midwifery student position in a public maternity service.
  • enrolled in an Australian postgraduate course in 2024 that is accredited under the Higher Education Act 2001 of the relevant jurisdiction.
  • completing a program of study that leads to a qualification (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters) and isn't a research program.
  • willing to take part in an evaluation or telephone survey about the scholarship.
  • not have received a scholarship from the Nursing and Midwifery Office either in the last three years or for the same program of study.

UNM College of Nursing Receives Gift to Fund Scholarships

${alt}

Health care providers see increasingly complex patients and have an expanding and changing scope of practice and available treatments to address the needs of their patients and their families.

“Health care providers see increasingly complex patients and have an expanding and changing scope of practice and available treatments to address the needs of their patients and their families,” says College of Nursing Interim Dean Carolyn Montoya, PhD, RN, CPNP, FAAN, FAANP. “This is why getting a DNP is so important for our nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives.”

DNP students already have a bachelor’s degree and are returning to transition from registered nurses to nurse practitioners or nurse-midwives with independent full-scope practice, including full prescriptive authority in New Mexico. As DNP students hold an undergraduate degree and are already in the nursing workforce, they may have difficulty securing traditional grants and scholarships. This gift from Western Sky Community Care will alleviate the financial burdens associated with returning to school and allow students who may have not been able to return to school for an advanced degree to receive an education that ultimately benefits New Mexico health care.

con-gift-pic.png

“Western Sky Community Care’s generous gift will be of significant help to our students, allowing them to focus on their studies, without the worry of excessive debt after graduation,” says Montoya.

Western Sky Community Care, a Medicaid managed care organization located in Albuquerque, funded the scholarships after identifying a need for nursing care in rural New Mexico. The gift will support nurse practitioners and nurse-midwifery students who plan to care for patients in the areas of rural health, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, nurse-midwifery, maternal-child health, and other health care areas. In addition, the funds will cover all anticipated educational costs, including tuition and fees, housing, food, textbooks and supplies, transportation and test preparation.

The scholarships were awarded during a May 23 ceremony at BU’s Metcalf Trustee’s Ballroom, and featured   keynote speaker   Dr. Barbara Jones,   dean of the BU School of Social Work.

IU Bloomington leads the nation in scholarships for critical languages

Indiana University leads the nation in successful applications for the Boren Award, an undergraduate scholarship and graduate fellowship program designed to increase the number of qualified fluent speakers of languages deemed critical by the U.S. Department of State.

This year, 12 IU Bloomington undergraduate students and one graduate student fellow were granted Boren Awards to study Arabic, Chinese and Russian, breaking IU’s record for successful applicants in a given year. Zakwani Zulualabiade, a graduate student of African American and African Diaspora studies, will travel to Ghana to both conduct research and study Akan Twi, a dialect of Akan spoken by over 9 million people in Ghana.

Micaela Fenn on the IU campus

This is the second year that Indiana University Bloomington has been a Top Performing Institution for the undergraduate Boren Scholarships and the second in which the university has broken its previous record. Only 34% of applicants nationally were awarded scholarships for 2024.

IU students will travel in Morocco, Kazakhstan, Ghana and Taiwan in 2024-25 for a year of intensive language study and a semester-long internship in the host country. The students have won approximately $365,000 in national language scholarships for the 2023-24 application cycle.

“We are so proud of these exceptional students who will use their language excellence to make the world a safer and more connected place,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “This honor is another example of Indiana University’s national leadership in critical language instruction.”

Multiple awardees stressed how valuable the Boren Scholarship is, not only for making their year abroad more affordable but also for their future careers. As a part of the Boren Award, students commit to working for the U.S. government in some capacity after graduation. For Micaela Fenn, who will study Arabic in Morocco next year, this has been a long-term goal.

“Ever since freshman year, I’ve had a strict plan that I’ve stuck to: I wanted to graduate, complete my capstone year, work in the Peace Corps and finally become a Foreign Service officer,” said Fenn, who is majoring in international studies and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. “Without the Boren, I would have had to abandon my plans.”

Like Fenn, many of the Boren Award recipients plan to complete the work requirement in placements across the federal government while using the language skills they honed abroad. One awardee, who wished to remain anonymous due to the potentially classified nature of their future work, shared how important the Boren Scholarship experiences are for students’ futures.

“This award opens doors to unparalleled experiences, including intensive language study, meaningful internships and cultural immersion, all of which are crucial for fostering a deep appreciation and nuanced understanding of global affairs,” the awardee said.

Zulualabiade echoes that sentiment.

“To have won the Boren Award means I can be of greater service to the nation while working with communities across the African Diaspora,” he said. “It is a great starting point for my work and career both as a community advocate and a scholar.”

The number of successful applicants exemplifies IU’s leadership in language studies, spearheaded by the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies and College of Arts and Sciences. Indiana University offers more languages than any other university in the U.S., with the corresponding opportunities for direct application of those languages in service to the state of Indiana and beyond.

Sachin Talagery

“We’re very proud that IU tops the nation in Boren Awards,” said John Ciorciari, dean of the Hamilton Lugar School. “The Boren program’s focus on critical language acquisition connects to a core element of our mission: to produce students with deep knowledge of foreign languages and cultures who are prepared to make a positive difference on key global issues. Our students’ success reflects their excellence and that of their dedicated faculty mentors. We are delighted that so many have earned this prestigious scholarship.”

Students across IU credited both the Boren Scholarship screening committee and their professors for their successful application. All of the students who use IU’s rigorous review process — a collaboration between Education Abroad, the Hamilton Lugar School, Hutton Honors College and the Office of National Scholarships and Awards — were either selected as awardees or alternates.

“IU prepared me for a successful Boren application through the targeted efforts of a team of staff who supported applicants by reviewing and providing feedback on our essays,” said Sachin G. Talagery, a dual major in international studies and Middle Eastern languages and cultures who will be studying in Morocco.

This screening committee and IU’s leadership in Language Flagships — hosting more than any other university in the country — have led to IU’s sustained success. John Miller, an undergraduate studying international law and institutions who will spend next year in Taiwan, shared how the community and expertise brought him to IU in the first place.

“Foreign language learning has been a huge part of my undergraduate studies and a large reason why I decided to attend IU,” Miller said. “For me, receiving this award is a reassurance that all this hard work was worth it.”

Trio of USask graduate students receive prestigious Vanier Scholarships

Three students in USask’s College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) have received funding to support innovation in diverse fields of English literature, community air quality, and plant and nutrition genetics.

Matt Olson, Research Profile and Impact May 29, 2024

The prestigious and competitive Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are designed to help universities recruit and support the best and brightest graduate students – and this year, three University of Saskatchewan (USask) students have received the esteemed honour.

The Vanier program is jointly administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Each of the three USask- based Vanier Scholars are respectively located in a different area of supported research.

Vanier S cholarships are valued at $50,000 per year for three years of doctoral-level study, and consider three criteria for selection: academic excellence, research potential and a potential and demonstrated leadership ability.

“The Vanier Scholarships are extremely special in their equally weighting past academic excellence with research potential and leadership,” said Dr. Debby Burshtyn (PhD), dean of USask’s CGPS. “The three 2024 recipients are already making their mark in our university; it’s wonderful to see that we are attracting and retaining such talent across the areas of humanities, health and STEM research.”

The Vanier S cholarship is considered one of the most competitive competitions for aspiring scholars in Canada, and USask’s three recipients are already hard at work in their areas of research.

Identifying trans representation in early 20th century literature

Gwen Rose is investigating trans representation in historic literature. (Photo: Submitted)

Delving into literature from the 20s, 30s and 40s, Gwen Rose is investigating trans representation in historic literature.

A PhD student in the College of Arts and Science under the supervision of Dr. Ella Ophir (PhD), Rose is examining works from late modernist literature to identify trans representation through characters in early 20th-century novels.

Rose said earning the Vanier scholarship provided an “unfathomable” level of financial security to pursue this line of research. She noted that one of the criteria for earning a Vanier scholarship was demonstrated leadership and hoped to continue pursuing acts of community and volunteer service while pursuing her PhD with the support of the scholarship.

Impacts of drought-induced poor air quality heart of PhD research

Krishna Kolen’s work explores the impact of air quality issues in Saskatchewan communities. (Photo: Dave Stobbe)

Working in the Department of Geography and Planning in the College of Arts and Science and with the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS), Krishna Kolen’s work explores the impact of air quality issues in Saskatchewan communities.

Under the joint supervision of Dr. Corrine Schuster-Wallace (PhD) and Dr. Krystopher Chutko (PhD), Kolen is working with Indigenous communities to examine and document health impacts caused by poor air quality from dust storms and wildfires.

Through this work, Kolen hopes to establish “early warning tools” for use in communities so they can identify signs of imminent-reduced air quality conditions and adjust accordingly.

“Air quality is not just a Saskatchewan problem, it’s not just a Canadian problem, but air quality events are a global problem,” she said. “As droughts increase under a changing climate, so will these poor air quality events.

“We’ll create early warning tools with our partnering communities here in Saskatchewan and we’ll assess if they are transferable to other drought-prone communities.”

It’s well-known that poor air quality has an impact on human health. Kolen’s research will explore where the most vulnerable populations and activities are located and how communities can mitigate those health impacts.

“By understanding health impacts, changes to day-to-day activities and different levels of exposure within groups in communities, the tool could help identify and respond to different levels of exposure,” she said. “Examples would be, ‘Where can I go for help? What resources do I need? What should I do if I have these health impacts?’”

Kolen hasn’t started her PhD yet – she’s slated to begin in the fall – but the Vanier scholarship means her air quality research can have further-reaching impacts than Saskatchewan.

The ultimate goal is to see if the tools they develop will be transferable to other communities threatened by air quality issues across Canada and around the world, and the support of the Vanier scholarship has the potential to make that goal a reality.

“It's huge, the fact we can do all these things without worrying about the finances,” she said. “I can focus on the important parts, engagement and connecting with community members and making those relationships ... being a Vanier Scholar gives me the flexibility to focus on the research that is important to me and the communities.”

Plants, food and the secret to living longer and healthier lives

Morgan Fleming is examining how a component of plant-based foods might help you live a longer life. (Photo: Submitted)

USask researcher Morgan Fleming is examining how a component of plant-based foods might help you live a longer life.

Fleming, a PhD student in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources, is exploring how phenolic compounds – present in all plant-based foods – have impacts on the health of human cells.

“My research is contributing to promoting the human health span,” she said. “It’s going to be helping us all live healthier for longer through delaying the onset of age-related disease.”

It’s known that phenolic compounds are good for humans due to their antioxidant properties, but Fleming said recent research suggests they could do more for humans with regard to cellular processes and regulating health and disease. Her research will investigate how they mechanistically achieve those benefits in human cells.

Fleming said she was excited to delve into an area of science that can help humans at large live healthier and longer and noted this research could expand into animals too.

“I am excited to help people not be burdened by the physical deterioration that comes with aging, to delay age-related disease and help us all live healthier,” she said. “Helping us, helping our pets, and improving quality of life for people.”

Working under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Eskiw (PhD) and professor emeritus Dr. Nicholas Low (PhD), Fleming is cultivating human cell samples and treating them with various phenolic compounds to analyze how they directly affect cells.

Fleming said becoming a Vanier Scholar was “very motivating” for her, because it showed that the federal program believes in her, her research and her community outreach-oriented goals for this work.

It’s an exciting prospect to continue this field of research, and Fleming said the Vanier S cholarship opens new possibilities for her studies.

“(Being a Vanier Scholar ) means we’re going to be able to perform more high-quality research, not nearly as limited by funding, and have more opportunities to share my research at conferences,” she said.

Together we will support and inspire students to succeed. We invite you to join by  supporting current and future students' needs  at USask.
