The library is an indispensable Centre and part of civilized society. The primary function of any library is to collect, organize, preserve and disseminate the information to its users. Digital library means digital forms of all reading materials available in a library. Digital libraries collect information in digital form which includes a combination of storage/ unstructured text/ numerical data, scanned images, graphics, audio and video recording to provide access to their users. A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in a digital format and accessible by computers. The digital content may be stored locally or access remotely via computer networks. The digital libraries depend on the nature and quality of contents available in digital collection. A digital library is a type of information retrieval system. Digital library, Digital Library system and Digital Library Management System are a part of Digital Library Manifesto. New and rapidly changing technology has makes libraries doorways to the gateways of the world through digital content. Due to the various information needs and requirements, low budget and Information Technology has totally changed the concept and function of academic library and information centre. Academic libraries are modernizing their services and structure. A digital library is a collection of digital documents or objects. This definition is the dominant perception of many people of today. Nevertheless, Smith (2001) defined a [digital library as an organized and focused collection of digital objects, including text, images, video and audio, with the methods of access and retrieval and for the selection, creation, organization, maintenance and sharing of collection.

The Objectives of this module is to i) introduce basic concepts and characteristics of digital libraries to the learners; ii) define digital libraries and highlight important differences between digital libraries and its precursors and technologies such as traditional library, information retrieval systems, virtual libraries, Internet search engines, etc.; and iv) introduce terminologies that are associated with digital library. II. Learning Outcomes After going through this lesson, the learner would gain knowledge about basic concepts and characteristics of digital libraries and different terminologies that are associated with it and are used interchangeably to refer to digital libraries. This chapter is a survey of these studies.
