The Role of Servant Leadership in Enhancing Church Management: A case study of church management practices among selected churches in Western Province in Zambia A Research Proposal

Profile image of Peter Lungu

2018, PhD Thesis

The inability of many churches in Zambia and world over to adopt servant leadership practices has led to ineffective church management. The church today has failed to model both the teachings and leadership skills of its founder and leader the Lord Jesus. As pointed out in Mathew 20 and John 13, Jesus brought a paradigm shift in leadership. He clearly brings out the fact that a leader is a servant first before issues of title, authority, control and dominion. This study is designed to bridge the gap that has been lacking in the practicing of servant leadership for effective church management. It’s also necessary to align the perspectives of servant leadership practices into the life of the church.

Authority is likening to a driving agent, which is divine or human. By experimental and analytical method, we explore the magisterial interpretation by evaluating modern trends on the application of authority. Research examines the Christian teachings from the Bible and Sacred Tradition. Jesus Christ had taught the principle of pragmatic authority based on Servant Leadership at the washing of His Disciples’ feet. The quest for a Servant Leader: to feed the poor, to protect orphans, to fight for justice in Africa; is value-style of leadership in the 21st century world

This article aims to give a full definition of servant leadership and shepherd leadership by comparing and contrasting the two texts of Jeremiah 23 and John 10. The notion of ‘shepherd’ or ‘shepherding’ is analysed and brought into the current debate on servant leadership. The shepherd metaphor used in the two passages is contextualised to the South African pastoral leadership situation, especially with regard to pastoral integrity. The status of pastoral leadership in the South African church community is highlighted as a challenge to be considered from the perspective of servant leadership proposed in Matthew 20:16. The presenter would like to conscientise the Christian community that integrity in the areas of caring, feeding and protecting the flock should be a driving force towards pastoral integrity. The exegetical findings of the shepherd model are applied to the pastoral leadership integrity. An appeal is made to the ecclesiastical community to return to the fundamentals of leadership by embracing servant leadership as an ensuing model for pastoral leadership integrity. The article contributes towards the knowledge of the definition, role and understanding of pastoral leadership defined through servant and shepherd leadership concepts. Its academic value lies in the fields of church leaderships, ethics and biblical teachings.

A pastoral staff has a variety of ages, and as the Baby Boomer generation retires, thousands of Millennials are waiting in the wings to take the leadership mantle. What are the Boomers doing to develop the Millennials as future leaders? Servant leadership, as first expounded by Robert Greenleaf, provides a foundation and frame- work for developing Millennials for effective and fruitful ministry leadership. Larry Thomas lays out four prin- ciples for doing this: Equip, Enable, Empower, and Encourage. Biblical examples of leadership development include Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha, and Paul and Timothy and Titus, with Jesus as the exemplar of a servant leader. Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges provide a fourfold approach focusing on the heart, the head, the hands of the leader, and the good habits of the servant leader. Larry Spears further develops the notion of a servant leader with ten principles: Listen, Heal, Persuade, Conceptualize, Develop, Dream, Trust & and Build, Communicate, Evolve, and Promote. Applying all of this to the ministry, three principles arise for pastors to (a) model servant hood for their staffs, (b) engage younger staff as people, and (c) serve in ways other than work. Younger staff can serve the senior pastor in many ways while being conscious that there is no idle time or useless task when serving their leader.

This study looked at the dynamics of leadership renewal in Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in Zimbabwe church. Nuances that led to leadership spats and succession politics in the church were investigated. In addition, factors that led to conflict over leadership in AFM in Zimbabwe church were established and also an assessment of the impact of leadership wrangles on AFM in Zimbabwe congregants, was covered. The study was informed by Ralph Dahrendorf’s Conflict Theory which posits that within a coordinated association there is the command class and obey class. These classes have different interests which made conflict inevitable between them. A qualitative research methodology was used, with focus group discussion and interviews as research instruments. A Purposive sampling research technique was used and a total of 24 respondents were selected for interview and focus group discussion. Key findings were; types of church governance model that a church adopts and use had a direct bearing towards power dynamics in the church. Pursuit for hegemony, desire for wealth and divergent doctrinal persuasions were some of the factors leading to church leadership conflicts and division in the churches. Church splits, rivalry and disappointment of members were found as impacts of church leadership conflict. More so, social polarization which birthed an angry society was identified as a negative impact of church leadership conflict. The study recommends that; there be promotion of faith-based peace-building, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches be allowed to play a more proactive role in educating the leadership of various churches, the church constitutions be clear on term limits were church leadership is voted into a position of leadership, and lastly but not list that the church need to fervently pray for the Spirit to touch the hearts of leadership, so that the church stands as a beacon of peace as should be the case.
