School of Art Fine Arts Doctoral Program (Art)

Fine arts doctoral program (art).

The Art track of the Fine Arts Doctoral Program centers on art praxis, which we define as theoretically informed action aimed at creating change in academic, social, and community contexts. We have chosen the word "praxis" instead of "practice" to signal a different relationship to theory than assumed by the theory-practice binary, and to indicate a fundamental difference between MFA programs in studio practice and the PhD. For Aristotle, praxis meant an action that is valuable in itself, as opposed to that which leads to creation, and for scholars of modernity from Marx to Lefebvre, praxis was, and remains, infused with an ethical and political imperative, and designated a more grounded and intentional mode of social and political transformation.

The Art track is part of a College-wide Fine Arts Doctoral Program , which includes students focusing on music, theatre, dance, and visual art. All areas of the Fine Arts Doctoral Program require a series of core courses that bring together students from across the College for innovative interdisciplinary and collaborative inquiry. These core courses support the art area's commitment to blurring disciplinary boundaries through original modes of investigation.

Students conduct interdisciplinary research integrating methodologies from a home discipline related to Art with methodologies from disciplines of Music, Theatre, and Dance housed at other Schools in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts or the University at large. Such interdisciplinarity is not simply additive, but transformative, blurring the chosen disciplines and even fundamentally altering them.

This program is for

  • studio artists who want to transform their approach to making into a methodology for research,
  • scholars who want to intervene in their home discipline by proposing novel ways of conducting research,
  • curators and cultural practitioners who want to do community-engaged projects, and
  • educators who want to rethink inquiry and develop meaningful practices organized around art and images that transform engagement through interdisciplinary initiatives.

PhD Art Education

At the University of Illinois, faculty and graduate students build a vibrant community of inquiry within the context of a Research 1 university. This community, including faculty whose breadth of interests span topics including contemporary art and visual culture in education, formal and informal learning, cultural policy and urban studies, and teacher training and identity, provides an intellectually stimulating environment for graduate students to stretch themselves intellectually and become world authorities on the particular topic of their dissertation.

Some doctoral students receive funding and support as teaching assistants for 4 years, and this funding is conditional upon academic standing. This funding includes a tuition waiver, a salary, health insurance, annual conference funding, plus many opportunities to gain competitive grants. Students complete coursework, consisting of 5 courses in art education, courses in research methodology and writing, courses in a minor that complements individual student interest, and courses that prepare students for the qualifying exam (taken after one year of full-time study) and the preliminary exam (at the conclusion of coursework). Examples of minors include Asian Studies, Art History, New Media, Museum Studies, and Women’s Studies. Following the conclusion of coursework, students write a dissertation that contributes new knowledge to the field of art education. Finally, students defend their dissertation.

During this course of study, there are numerous resources available to graduate students in Art Education, both within our program and across the University of Illinois:

  • At our major comprehensive research university, students have access to the broadest possible range of elective courses.
  • Visual Arts Research is a scholarly, refereed journal and has been published through the Art Education program for over 40 years. It is edited by Art Education faculty.
  • The Everyday Arts Lab offers an excellent local site for graduate research for those interested in arts and social practice.
  • With a total of 14 million titles the University of Illinois Library houses the largest collection of any public university in the world. The Ricker Library of Architecture and Art has 120,000 titles and 33,00 serials.
  • The Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory is a program that promote conversations among a range of departments in the humanities, social sciences, and performing arts by organizing lectures, panel discussions, and conferences, as well as the Modern Critical Theory lecture series.
  • The Krannert Art Museum includes an archive of over 8,000 works of art and rotating exhibitions of traditional and innovative art works.
  • The Spurlock Museum highlights the diversity of cultures around the globe.
  • Illinois is host to the  International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry , which brings a large contingent of art education scholars to campus.
  • Regular visiting speakers from other institutions including Kevin Tavin, Amelia Kraehe, David Darts, Olivia Gude, Luis Camnitzer, Matthew Goulish, Marjorie Manifold, and Stephanie Springgay.

Arts Administration PhD

Three people talking in front of sculpture

The PhD in Arts Administration at UK provides committed and engaged arts scholars the opportunity to study in a rigorous, online program focused on field competencies and research methodologies.

Our program prepares students for careers that envision, conduct, and disseminate meaningful research in the arts and cultural sector. Future employers of PhD graduates may include state and local arts councils; federal, state, and local government agencies; academic institutions; large arts organizations including museums, performing arts organizations, and arts centers; economic and community development organizations; and thinktanks.

Designed for the working professional who wants to gain expertise for a research-intensive career, this rigorous, online program can be completed in as little as four years.

As a student in this program you will:

  • Apply theoretical concepts and frameworks to arts administration problems.
  • Solve problems through quantitative and qualitative research and conceptual analysis.
  • Develop a conceptual framework based on theories that will prepare you to advance knowledge in the field.
  • Conduct original research on issues in arts administration.
  • Transcend traditional modes and mechanisms in order to innovatively collaborate with peer colleagues, industry professionals, and faculty.

The program is designed to provide research specialization in arts and culture beyond the master's level. All students are expected to have at least minimal training in the common body of knowledge in the functional areas of arts administration.

In order to apply to the PhD in Arts Administration, students must have an earned graduate degree in arts administration or a related discipline. Field practitioners in the arts and cultural sectors with graduate degrees in related disciplines may be considered for admission; however, would likely be assigned foundational coursework which would not apply to the required 46-credit hours for the PhD.

Students will only be admitted in the fall semester.

Applications must include:

  • Resume.  The resume/CV should include the applicant’s contact information; work experience including relevant arts and culture based work and/or volunteer experience; education; research and teaching experience, if applicable; publications, papers, and research presentations, if applicable; and any special skills or qualifications relevant to a pursuit of a doctoral degree.
  • Statement of Purpose.  The statement of purpose should include the rationale and purpose of the applicant’s desire to pursue a PhD in Arts Administration at UK as well as preliminary research interests, and career goals after achieving the PhD. What is it about arts administration that makes you desire to spend the next four years of your life studying it, researching it, and writing about it in a dissertation? Your statement of purpose must be a serious explanation of your interests.
  • A previously published article or conference paper with references;
  • A recent graduate level essay on a related arts and culture topic with references;
  • A newly drafted paper that addresses a key issue or question within the arts and cultural field.
  • Transcripts.  Applicants may submit unofficial transcripts for all university and college degrees earned. Upon acceptance, official transcripts are required.
  • Three letters of recommendation.  A combination of professional and academic references is preferred. Letters should be able to speak to a candidate’s ability to successfully complete graduate level coursework, research aptitude, and advanced writing skills.

The Arts Administration Graduate Admissions Faculty will review the PhD applications in order to select the finalists. Finalists will be interviewed via video conference in order to determine the student’s:

  • Rationale for pursuing a PhD;
  • Proclivity to online education and aptitude for rigorous research expectations;
  • Area of research interest; and
  • Systems in place to support the student through doctoral studies.

Applications must be received in full (including letters of recommendation) by March 1 for consideration for the fall semester.

Applicants accepted to the PhD in Arts Administration will be provided instructions on how to apply for the Graduate Certificate in Research Methods in Education. There is no need to apply for the certificate prior to acceptance.

This course examines an array of contemporary approaches to building the economic, physical, and social dimensions of cities structured around creativity, culture, and the arts. Historical underpinnings, trajectories, and problems of these approaches are explored through lectures, readings, student research, and discussions. Creative cities, the creative class, creative placemaking, and the like as “new” ways to further urban development have gained popularity yet remain problematic and raise important issues in how cities develop and how different people in those cities experience these approaches.

Arts and culture institutions operate in complex environments with policies that shape the kinds of artistic creations that are created, produced, disseminated, marketed, funded and preserved. What are these policies in the United States? Who are the policy actors? Who implements policy? Who enforces policy? How do you create new policies?

This course explores regulatory and provisionary areas of public policy as well as cultural policy specifically. Historical and contemporary policy issues related to arts education, creative economy, cultural facility infrastructure, employment, equity, funding, and preservation will be investigated.

Organization theory examines the inner workings of institutions in an attempt to understand organization functionality. For this course, theories are drawn from numerous disciplines including arts management, business administration, nonprofit management, and public administration. Additionally, theories may be classical, foundational, modern, postmodern, and/or critical. Specifically, this course explores various organizational theories that are relevant to running and studying nonprofit arts organizations. Through readings and critical analysis, students will establish a conceptual framework in which to design a research study.

This course offers a theoretical and practical understanding of leadership for arts and cultural organizations. Students will be exposed to various leadership theories, models, and issues from many different fields, such as arts management, business administration, nonprofit management, and public administration with a specific attention given to running arts and cultural organizations. Sustaining Leadership in the Arts also explores emerging, critical, and contemporary leadership issues including diversity, equity, and inclusion in arts and cultural leadership.

Residency credit for dissertation research after the qualifying comprehensive examination. Students may register for this course in the semester of the qualifying examination. A minimum of two semesters are required as well as continuous enrollment (Fall and Spring) until the dissertation is completed and defended.

Arts & Culture Research Studies explores various types of research studies done in the field of arts and culture. Both empirical and theoretical research in many different areas, such as management, governance, leadership, financial management, fundraising, marketing, programming and evaluation, human resources management, audience and community development, cultural economics, and cultural policy will be examined.

The types of research studies explored in this course will include white papers, research papers (articles), books (and book chapters), and websites (emphasis on visual elements). Studies included in this course are from many different fields, such as arts management, business administration, nonprofit management, and public administration but focus on topics in arts and culture management, administration, and policies. By reading and analyzing a number of studies in many different foci, students will be able to gain a broad understanding of arts and culture research and to shape their future research.

This course is rooted in the conceptual understanding of statistics and covers applications of statistical and graphical methods for educational and evaluation data. Basic descriptive statistics, correlation, normal distributions and hypothesis testing will be covered. An emphasis is placed on exploratory data analysis and interpretation of results within the broad contexts of education and evaluation. Statistical literacy exercises will be used for comprehension and application of materials. In addition, applications of statistical software will be demonstrated.

Survey research is one of the most common and useful methods for gathering data in educational research. Obtaining valid and reliable research results requires the administration of instruments that provide valid and reliable measures of the variables selected for observation. This course will focus on principles of measurement and procedures for developing a variety of survey instruments and for determining their validity and reliability. It is designed to teach students both how to improve the questions and design instruments. The theory and practice of survey research relies on contributions from disciplines such as psychology, sociology, statistics, and computer science.

The purpose of this course is to familiarize participants with basic features of the design and implementation of surveys, and acquaint them with some principles and underlying theory from disciplines that have traditionally used surveys most heavily. The course will cover the major stages of the survey process, including hypothesis and problem formulation, study design, sampling, questionnaire design, interviewing techniques, pretesting, modes of data collection, and data cleaning, management, and analysis The course involves lectures, readings, and discussions.

Students are encouraged to bring materials related to their own research interests. The course will provide an overview of the theoretical and experimental literature related to question and questionnaire design as well as focusing on practical issues in the design, critique, and interpretation of survey questions that are often not taught in formal courses. There will be exercises both in and outside of class to reinforce both theory and practice.

An examination of a subset of evaluation methods, topics, and problems. An introductory course in the area with minimal emphasis on quantitative methods. The course is designed to: provide a perspective from which evaluation studies may be viewed; and, to provide experiences for those who will learn from or conduct evaluations.

Advanced historical research and writing on issues in the study of education.

Students must begin the PhD in Arts Administration in the fall semester.

The program is designed for students to take 6-credit hours per semester (fall, spring, and summer) for seven consecutive semesters. During the eighth semester, students take their qualifying examination.

UB Arts Management Program

Arts management students have a conversation on the steps of the Oakland Museum of California.

Arts managers matter because they are the ultimate mediators between art works and their best audience.   Arts leaders must negotiate the increasingly complex cultural, socioeconomic, legal, and political systems that challenge sustainable arts environments.

The University at Buffalo's MA in Arts Management   prepares you to face these challenges. Through its unique blend of critical inquiry, analysis, and experiential learning, the program builds your capacity to identify and solve the problems inherent in the areas of arts management, production, and cultural policymaking.

ARAD IN THE NEWS

Dr Aparicio Morales's written work is featured in the catalog accompanying the exhibition NEO-EXTRA-ACTIVISM–Protocols for Buen Vivir, a 2020–2022 Vera List Center Fellowship commissioned project featuring the work of Argentinian collective Etcétera.

Dr Gregory-Kameka’s most recent research focuses on sociology of the role of arts organizations and their cultural policy landscape in sustaining or disrupting racial capitalism. What is the importance of Black space in the arts in multiple locations across the Black Atlantic, and how is that space created, contested and supported in the pandemic age?

Dr Lena is a keynote speaker at the International Music Research Days 2021 conference with a presentation on the future of genre and the need for a measurement revolution.

Together with Léonie Hénault of the Center for the Sociology of Organizations at the Sciences Po in Paris, Dr Lena presents research on and implications of polyoccupationalists in a presentation titled, "Polyoccupationalism: Occupational Identities in the Postindustrial Era".

Dr Lena writes about how candidates try — and sometimes fail — to effectively use music to bolster their campaigns. According to Dr. Lena, candidate playlists “seem to be about… communicating the candidate’s platform…and in other cases candidates are trying to communicate their tastes.”

In  Entitled: Discriminating Tastes and the Expansion of the Arts , Dr Jennifer C. Lena, charts the history of American arts and cultural policy, interrogating the institutions, practices, and technologies underpinning the development of American Art. The book celebrates and critiques key moments, organisations, and actors, as well as giving new insights into our own, contemporary, elites, their taste practices, and social inequalities.

Capstone Sequences

Every Arts Management student completes a capstone sequence, which is the culmination of your degree, synthesizing everything that you have learned throughout the program. It is designed as a bridge to your professional life, serving as a powerful demonstration of the skills you’ve developed at CGU as you enter or continue your work in the arts and cultural field. Each capstone sequence comprises both course work and a final project or deliverable that stems from your own intellectual and creative pursuits.

Students in the Arts Management program may complete their degree requirements through any sequence below.

Practicum Sequence

Explore the arts and cultural field with partnering arts organizations such as museums, theaters, presenters, funders, and government agencies.

You might act as a consultant, providing valuable work related to the organization’s articulated needs and goals. Or you might act as a researcher and observer, offering data and insights about the organization’s place and operations within the larger arts ecosystem. Work closely with a partnering organization and faculty to present your work and findings for feedback and assessment. Some organizations offer a stipend; others do not.

Entrepreneurship Sequence

Develop cutting edge business skills to launch a new venture for the arts and cultural sector.

You will study the principles of startups from initial concept through prototyping, market testing, and business plan development. You will study alongside MBAs in the Drucker School of Management and practice working with and speaking to people across disciplines and industries.

Thesis Sequence

Complete your degree requirements with the successful execution of an academic master’s thesis.

This thesis will most likely stem from completed coursework that stimulated your curiosity. Master’s theses are primarily research-driven and draw upon both original research and secondary sources. You will take courses with MA and PhD students in the School of Arts & Humanities and produce a thesis that contributes new knowledge to the arts and culture field.

A highlight of the Arts Management program is the ability to take a total of 16 units of elective courses. In addition to electives offered by Arts Management program, students may take courses in other departments and programs, such as:

Archival Studies Art Cultural Studies Educational Studies Entrepreneurship Evaluation History Leadership Management Marketing Museum Studies Music Organizational Science Politics and Policy Transdisciplinary Studies

The UC San Diego Visual Arts PhD Program grants two PhD degrees: Art History, Theory and Criticism and Art History, Theory and Criticism with a Concentration in Art Practice . The program embodies the department's commitment to innovative research by embracing the close intersection of art, media, and design practice with history, theory, and criticism, and by offering training in the history, theory, and criticism of a range and mix of areas represented in our MFA faculty, including studio art, film, video, photography, computational media, performance art, public art, design, visual culture, and socially engaged art practice. Regional and cultural frameworks of study include European and Latin American art, Chinese art, nineteenth-century French visual culture, Mesoamerican, Native American, and Indigenous art and material culture, Medieval art and culture, queer and feminist art, material culture, science, technology, and art; and ocean, environmental, and land art.

The Art Practice Concentration degree, which must be applied for at the time of application to the PhD program, follows the same course of scholarly training, research, and writing as the Art History, Theory and Criticism degree, with additional requirements in research-based art practice that span all years of coursework, qualifying, and doctoral research. Two students are admitted to this concentration annually.

Information for Current and Prospective Students

Full Time Enrollment

In order to remain eligible for financial support all graduate students must be enrolled   in 12 units of upper-division (100-199) or graduate level (200 and above) courses each quarter during the regular academic year. Graduate students must also maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 to maintain good academic standing. The majority of students will choose to complete the majority of their academic coursework for a letter grade.

Pre-Candidacy

Coursework should be chosen in consultation with the Advisor and should be taken in preparation for the Qualifying phase. During the first three years in the program, students should aim to fulfill the following requirements:

  • MA en Route Requirements (if interested and eligible)
  • Qualifying Materials and Exams (year 3)

Advancing to candidacy occurs when the student has passed all course, language, and qualifying requirements and is ready to research and write a dissertation. Doctoral candidates, sometimes referred to as “all but dissertation” or ABD, work on their dissertation with Advisor and Committee consultation and feedback for two or more years. During this time, Art Practice candidates additionally produce the required art practice components. Each quarter, most doctoral candidates typically enroll in 8-12 units of VIS 299 and/or 4 units of a 500, in consultation with their Advisor. Candidacy concludes when the candidate completes and successfully defends the dissertation (and, for VA77, the additional Art Practice requirements) and is awarded the doctorate.

Degree Paths

The program consists of two degree paths: Art History, Theory and Criticism (VA76) and Art Practice (VA77), a concentration designed for artists engaged in advanced research who wish to pursue their work in an environment geared to doctoral study, and to produce studio, media, performance or public facing work alongside a written dissertation. See Handbook for further details.

Interdisciplinary Specializations

Students within the PhD program who are interested in the opportunity to undertake specialized research may apply to participate in an interdisciplinary specialization. Students accepted into a specialization program would be expected to complete coursework in addition to those required for their PhD program. The department offers interdisciplinary specializations with the following campus programs.

  • Anthropogeny:   for students with an interest in human origins
  • Critical Gender Studies:   providing specialized training in gender and sexuality
  • Interdisciplinary Environmental Research : for students interested in environmental solutions

For the VA76 PhD students, competency in reading, understanding, and interpreting texts in two languages other than English is required before advancement to candidacy (Qualifying Exam stage), and competency in at least one language is expected at the time of application to the program. Art Practice Concentration students (VA77) will be required to satisfy competency in one language other than English before advancing to PhD candidacy. The student and their Advisor will jointly determine examination languages.

The Program’s language requirement may be met in one of three ways:

  • Passing the department’s in-house Language Exam
  • Passing one approved graduate-level language course
  • Passing two approved upper-division undergraduate language courses
  • Passing a two-year sequence of approved undergraduate language courses in a single language

Required Paperwork

For each language exam or course sequence taken to satisfy a language requirement, a Language Completion form must be completed by the student, the proctor/instructor and submitted to the Student Affiars Manager in order to receive credit for completion of the language requirement. Submitted forms are automatically routed via DocuSign for approval and processing.

In-House Language Exams

In-house Language Exams test ability in reading and comprehension (by translation into English) only, not writing or spoken fluency in the designated language. The exam consists of two short texts, one less difficult to be translated into English without a dictionary, and one more difficult to be translated with a dictionary. The dictionary may be either a printed volume or an on-line resource. One hour is allowed for each section (total test time: 2 hours). The translations may be written on a computer or by hand. Exams are corrected by the faculty member responsible for designing the exam, who also invigilates the test. If adequate reading knowledge is not demonstrated, the student’s Advisor will review with the student and the faculty setting the exam the steps necessary to master the language and a new exam will be scheduled within a reasonable amount of time.

Students requesting an in-house language examination should consult with faculty responsible for particular languages:

  • Chinese and Japanese : Professor Kuiyi Shen
  • French : Professors. Jordan Rose and John Welchman
  • German : Professor Alena Williams
  • Italian : Professor William Tronzo
  • Korean : Professor Kyong Park
  • Mayan languages : Professor Elizabeth Newsome
  • Spanish : Professors Elizabeth Newsome and Mariana Wardwell
  • Turkish: Professors Memo Akten and Pinar Yoldas

Individual arrangements for determination of competency will be made for those languages that cannot be tested by department faculty .

Committee Constitution and Management

About the committee.

This is the group of four faculty who agree to the student’s request for mentorship and evaluation during the qualifying and doctoral years. The Committee is chaired by the Advisor(s). In addition to mentoring and guiding the student’s research, this team serves as the Qualifying Committee and the Doctoral or Dissertation Committee, conducting the Qualifying Exam and the Dissertation Defense. The committee must be formally appointed by Graduate Division in the process outlined below.

Committee Constitution

The Committee Chair is the student’s Faculty Advisor/Co-Advisors and is selected by Year Two through mutual agreement with the student. The rest of the Committee is constituted through request and consent between the student and other faculty, with the guidance and approval of the Advisor(s).

Makeup of the committee:

  • 3 Visual Arts Faculty (including the Chair/Co-Chairs), 1 member may be a non-PhD faculty
  • 1 tenured or emeritus faculty from outside the department

For each option, Assistant or Acting-Associate Faculty may serve as a general member or Co-Chair but not as sole Chair. The Graduate Division website has  additional information  about committees and a  Committee Membership Table  which may be helpful in determining what role a faculty member may serve on a committee.

Submitting Your Committee

After faculty have agreed to serve on the Committee, and the Faculty Advisor has approved the list, the student must complete and send the  Committee Constitution form  which will be routed to the Student Affiars Manager for processing.  This form must be approved by the Graduate Division by Week 5 BEFORE the Qualifying Exam .

Changing Your Committee

There are times when committee membership must change after the intial review and approval. All changes to committee membership need to be approved by the Department and then Graduate Division. Committee reconstitution must be completely reviewed and approved by Week 5, the quarter PRIOR to QE/Defense. When changing committee membership:

  • Review the Committee Membership requirements
  • Discuss the change in committee membership with the Committee Chair/Co-chairs
  • Discuss the change in committee with impacted committee members
  • Complete the   Committee Reconstitution form   which will be routed to the Student Affairs Manager for processing.

Committee Management

It is the responsibility of the student, in consultation with their advisor/committee chair, to engage with and request feedback on drafts of written materials and (for VA77) documentation of artwork progress with all committee members during research and writing of their qualifying materials and dissertation. The student also must email final copies of all materials to their Committee prior to their Qualifying Exam and Dissertation Defense.

Qualifying Exam, Advancement to Candidacy

About the qualifying process.

The Qualifying process occurs throughout Year Three. The student, under the supervision of the Advisor and with the advice of the Committee, prepares two bibliographies (one on the chosen field of emphasis and the second pertaining to the proposed dissertation); writes a qualifying paper and a dissertation prospectus; and takes written and oral examinations pertaining to these documents. The Art Practice PhD additionally requires a practice prospectus and a third bibliography.

Qualifying Exam

The Qualifying Examination has two parts: A Written Examination in which the student writes two essays over five days in response to questions provided by the Committee; and two weeks later,  a 2- or 2.5-hour Oral Examination led by the Committee, during which the student is asked questions and put in dialog about all of the qualifying materials.

Qualifying Timeline

A student must have completed all required course work and passed all language examinations before taking the qualifying examination, which will be held no later than the end of the third year. Upon successful completion of the qualifying examination, the student will be advanced to candidacy.

Qualifying Exam Administrative Checklist

Qualifying Exam Failure

Should a student fail the examination, the Faculty Committee will clarify the weaknesses in the exam, so that the student can prepare to take it a second time. If a second oral examination is warranted, they will have to re-take and pass the exam prior to the end of the Pre-Candidacy Time Limit (or they need an extension approved to continue). They can always take a leave and return but if the PCTL is expired, they will have to advance before returning or an exception to extend the time would be need to be approved prior to retuning. If the student fails the oral examination a second time, their graduate studies in the department will be terminated.

MA en Route

  • Five Art History seminars
  • VIS 200 Methods and Theories
  • VIS 204 Re-Thinking Art History
  • One Theory/Practice seminar (chosen from VIS 210-219)
  • Four breadth courses, from four different breadth areas

We do not offer an MA with an Art Practice concentration. Therefore, Art Practice concentration students must make a formal change in their degree aim to designate Art History, Theory, and Criticism (VA76). This change must take place at least two quarters prior to the Qualifying Exam.

Note:   Students who wish to receive an MA as part of the Ph.D. program   must apply for master’s degree candidacy by the end of the second week of the quarter in which they expect to receive the degree.   Please see the Graduate Coordinator regarding this process.

Necessary Documents for the Qualifying Exam

  • Report of the Qualifying Exam

Necessary Documents for the MA on the Way

  • Application for MA (due week two)
  • Final Report for MA

Best Practices for Completing the Report of the Qualifying Exam and Final Report via DocuSign:

  • Ahead of your exam/defense ask faculty to add [email protected] as a “safe sender” so those emails are less likely to go to junk/spam. Although campus IT has taken steps to identify DocuSign as a safe sender, it is still recommended that individual users do so as well.
  • At the end of your Exam/Defense ask your committee members to check their email for the DocuSign email with the link to the form and sign while you're all online together.
  • ask the faculty to check their junk folder, spam quarantine, or other spam folders
  • next, ask them to log into their DocuSign account using their @ucsd.edu email address and SSO credentials to access the form/s directly (https://docusign.ucsd.edu) *some people have personal DocuSign accounts so ask them to ensure they are logging into the UCSD DocuSign account
  • Get verbal confirmation of who has signed and who has not, then follow-up with the Student Affairs Manager to resolve any issues your committee members have with signing the form.
  • Once the appropriate form is submitted to the Graduate Division, the appropriate fee will be charged directly to the student’s financial TritonLink account.

About the Dissertation

Following successful completion of the qualifying examinations, the candidate will research and write a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of their Advisor and with the input of the Committee. Students in the art practice concentration (VA77) will submit a written dissertation that observes the same regulations and conventions as VA 76, except that the length requirement is slightly shorter and there must be one additional chapter devoted to discussion of the art practice. In addition, Art Practice candidates will additionally produce and exhibit a visual component. See the Handbook for details.

About the Defense

After the committee has reviewed the finished dissertation (and art practice components, for VA 77), the candidate will orally defend their dissertation (and art practice work and exhibition), responding to questions from the Committee in a meeting that may be public (the student may invite visitors), as per university policy. The Dissertation Defense is the culmination of all of your work within the Ph.D. program. Please read all of the information on the Graduate Division's website about " Preparing to Graduate " and make an appointment to speak with the Student Affairs Manager one year prior to when you plan to defend.

Roles and Responsibilities for the Defense

Student will:

  • Schedule the Dissertation Defense with their committee. This is normally scheduled for three hours. (You are responsible for reserving a room or scheduling the zoom meeting).
  • Complete the PhD Dissertation Defense Notification form which will notify the Student Affairs Manager of the date and time of the defense. This form is required so that the Final Report paperwork can be initiated and sent to your committee members on the date of the defense.
  • Follow-up with your committee, the Graduate Division, and the Student Affairs Manager about any issues surrounding the completion of your degree.

Faculty Advisor will:

  • Ensure the   policy   appropriate participation of all members of the committee at the Dissertation Defense. It is also helpful to remind all committee members to sign the forms by checking their inboxes for the DocuSign request to sign the forms. These sometimes end up in a person's spam folder.

Student Affairs Manager will:

  • Fill out the Final Report form via DocuSign and route the form the morning of the exam/defense for signature to all committee members, the department chair, and the Graduate Division.
  • Follow-up with committee members regarding signatures on the Final Report and general petition forms (if needed).
  • Send out the announcement of the defense to department faculty and graduate students.

Additional Information and Tasks

Preliminary Dissertation Appointments with the Graduate Division: Students will schedule their preliminary and final appointments with Graduate Division Academic Affairs Advisors utilizing the online calendaring system they have in place:   https://gradforms.ucsd.edu/calendar/index.php

Committee Management : If you need to make any changes to your doctoral committee please follow the instructions above in the "Committee Management" drawer.

Embargo Your Dissertation:   Talk to your faculty advisor about embargoing your dissertation. You may want to embargo your dissertation if you are planning to turn it into a book. The embargo will delay the university's publication of your dissertation and prevent other academics from using your research.   https://grad.ucsd.edu/_files/academics/DissertThesisReleaseTemplate.pdf

Necessary Documents for the Dissertation Defense

  • Final Report (routed for signature by the Student Affairs Manager)

Best Practices for Completing the Final Report via DocuSign:

  • At the end of your Defense ask your committee members to check their email for the DocuSign email with the link to the form and sign while you're all online together.
  • Get verbal confirmation of who has signed and who has not, then follow up with the Student Affairs Manager to resolve any issues your committee members have with signing the form.

Paying Associated Fees:  For students who will need to pay fees (advancement to candidacy, thesis submission fee, filing fee, re-admit fee), they will be charged on the financial TritonLink account once the form is received by the Graduate Division. There is no need for students to go to the cashier’s office.

Grades and Evaluations

Only courses in which a student received grades of A, B, or S are allowed toward satisfaction of the requirements for the degree. Note that a “C” is generally regarded as unsatisfactory within this department. In satisfaction of all program requirements and electives, A, A-, and B+ are regarded as acceptable grades for seminars and courses. Grades of B, B- indicate weaknesses and are cause for concern. Grades of C+ or below are regarded as unsatisfactory and may lead to academic probation. University policy states that any student with more than 8 units of “U” and/or “F” grades is barred from future registration including the next available quarter. It is not recommended that VIS 295/298/299 are taken for a letter grade.

Grade Point Average

A graduate student must maintain a minimum grade point average of at least 3.0 (B average) to continue in good standing. A student is subject to dismissal if the overall grade point average falls below 3.0 at any time.

Spring Evaluation

Every Spring quarter, Advisors (in the first year Provisional Advisors) will submit an evaluation of their advisee’s progress to Graduate Division. Students are expected to submit a summary of the past academic year to their advisor. These evaluations serve as an important tool for students and advisors in assessing student progress, while also providing suggestions and goals for students’ successful completion of their projects.

The Graduate Division will review the evaluations when student/departments are making specific requests for exceptions

The duration of the Ph.D. program is five to eight years. University and departmental regulations stipulate that the maximum tenure of graduate study at UC San Diego or Total Registered Time Limit (TRTL) is eight years; while seven years is the limit for receiving any type of university financial support or a student's Support Time Limit (SUTL). For the Department of Visual Arts, the "normative" time to degree is 6 years. Students are expected to pass their qualifying exam and advance to candidacy in year three, but no later than year four which is the university's Pre-candidacy time limit (PCTL).

To learn more about time limits please visit the Graduate Division website.

Time Limits:  https://grad.ucsd.edu/academics/progress-to-degree/time-to-doctorate-policy.html

You can check your time limit by logging into the Graduate Student Portal.

Create a meaningful, sustainable life and career in the arts.

The USC Thornton Arts Leadership program is an innovative, artist-centric graduate degree program designed for artists, arts administrators and cultural entrepreneurs.

While situated in the USC Thornton School of Music, the arts leadership program is intentionally multi-disciplinary, drawing students from various artistic backgrounds, genres and ranges of experience. Mentorship from arts leadership faculty and guidance from working professionals in the field are hallmarks of the program’s unique design.

The central academic program is the one-year Master of Science in Arts Leadership. The program begins in the late summer with a five-day intensive experience and continues as a cohort of arts leaders who are determined to make a difference in the world with their work. Graduates of the program pursue multiple career paths including creating and leading their own ensembles, programs and creative organizations, many of which they imagined or launched in the arts leadership degree program through self-directed learning and practice.

Graduate Programs

Master of science, 2 years | 31 units.

The Arts Leadership Master of Science degree is designed for arts administrators and cultural entrepreneurs who want to expand their personal vision of leadership.

Graduates have often gone on to create and lead their own ensembles, programs and arts organizations such as the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, Elizabeth Youth Theater Ensemble, and Sunset ChamberFest. Innovative education and community engagement programs like Modern Maestro and Play the Groove were also developed by alumni.

Refer to the  USC Catalogue  for complete course descriptions and degree requirements.

The two-year curriculum (which can be accelerated in some cases to two semesters) is designed for early and mid-career arts leaders who recognize that the rapidly changing world requires an innovative approach to arts leadership. The program is multi-disciplinary and self-directed, allowing students to create highly individualized courses of study that meet their needs and aspirations. Close faculty mentorship and guidance from working professionals in the field are a hallmark of this unique degree as well as a commitment to both theory and practice.

Graduate Certificate

2 years | 18 units.

The two-year curriculum (which can be accelerated in some cases to two semesters) requires a minimum of 18 units. With most of the courses scheduled in the evenings, the program is designed for working professionals in any of the arts disciplines who recognize that a rapidly changing world requires a new set of leadership skills.

Refer to the USC Catalogue for complete course descriptions and degree requirements  here .

Freshman: Howard has always been my dream school and I am proud to say that it did not dissapoint. It is an esteemed HBCU with an engaged and supportive student body, alumni network, and staff. A unique aspect of the school is the level of participation and engagement from the student body; everyone is running for an elecrted position or president of this or that organization. Everyone is fighting to have the most well rounded and memorable resume, however unlike many PWI of similar caliber, there is not a competitive culture. Everyone wants to see everyone win. Something that surprised me about attending this school is the diversity. There are many multifaceted, geographically diverse students here. I will say the biggest challenge this school faces is saftey and security. Especially being in a city like dc, the homeless population is very large as well as substance abuse and crime. Howard does well but in my opinion we should be a closed campus. All in all, I am proud to be a bison! ... Read 4,072 reviews

Junior: I'm currently majoring in Interior Design at Belmont University, and overall, I've had a fantastic experience! The program has provided me with a solid mind in design principles, technical skills, and creative thinking. I've enjoyed the small class sizes, it allow for personalized attention from professors. The university's focus on community and collaboration has also helped me build valuable relationships with peers and professionals in the field. One aspect I appreciate is the program's emphasis on sustainability, accessibility, and social responsibility in design. It's essential to consider the impact of our designs on people and the environment, and Belmont's curriculum prepares us for that. If I could suggest changes, I would like to see more diverse and contemporary course offerings, such as classes on biophilic design, and WELL Building Standard.Overall, I feel confident that Belmont's Interior Design program has equipped me with the knowledge to succeed in this creative field. ... Freshman: At first, I was about my first time experience as a college freshman, but everyone is friendly and welcoming. I have not participated in a lot of student organizations or been active on campus so far, but I am very excited to see what UCF has to offer. My advice to any first-time in college student is to take your time to explore your interests and gradually get involved in activities and organizations that resonate with you. Whether it's joining a club related to your major, participating in intramural sports, or volunteering in the community, UCF offers numerous opportunities for personal and academic growth outside the classroom. Also, keep an open mind, be proactive in seeking out opportunities, and don't hesitate to reach out to fellow students, faculty, or staff if you ever need support or guidance along the way. Enjoy your time at UCF and make the most of this exciting chapter in your life! ... Read 22,376 reviews

Madam Brooke was just a lovely lady full of patience and guided me all the way. Considering that I'll be relocating from Kenya to Malibu, I hope to get the most out of Pepperdine because it is what encouraged me to apply. I love the serene environment and that they don't experience seasons hence more time at the beach and oh my do I love the beach! The religious aspect of Pepperdine also motivates me as I come from a religious background of being affiliated with the Church of Christ. Sophomore: Overall, my first year at North Carolina State university was pretty good. There was not a lot of crime, although we did get a few alerts here and there. The dorm I stayed in was decent but the housing situation is so hectic I wasn't able to get a dorm for my second year. The food options are somewhat limited and many people said the dining hall food made them sick but it tasted alright sometimes. I enjoyed it and will continue attending, I would just like to see the food situation improve and have something to make it a little safer, as often people unaffiliated with the school would come on campus and bother students. ... College of Charleston

Freshman: I love Charleston! I think the area is beautiful and there's many opportunities to stay entertained and busy. I love going downtown on King street because there are tons of restaurant and shopping options. The college itself is wonderful academically. I feel like I've been challenged enough but not to the point that I'm constantly stressed or failing. I've done very well here! The negative sides of CofC are the housing and actual campus food -- not a lot of options. Housing is extremely limited so off-campus living is very common amongst all ages. This off-campus style is very expensive, though. Charleston in general is a lot of money and can take a toll on what the area has to offer, and further impact your experience if you can't afford to live around here. ... Read 2,323 reviews

Freshman: As a student who just finished their first year at Indiana University, I’d say my overall experience was great! First semester was my time to adjust to a brand new setting, learn how to be independent, and start to step out of comfort zone and meet new people and try new things. Then came second semester which had a rough start considering it was the cold winter in the Midwest and the beginning of the rush process for sorority recruitment. Later on throughout the semester my relationships with the people on my floor grew, I maintained an amazing friendship with my roommate, and I met new girls in my sorority I ended up joining. Additionally, IU has so many amazing resources from career services helping with your career path, resumes, LinkedIn, etc., to workshops, academic advisors, professors, tutoring services and even more. ... Junior: I have absolutely loved my time at Baldwin Wallace University so far. Coming into college, my main concern was being unable to get involved on campus, and making no friends. Through my orientation, I learned quickly that it is very easy to get involved in diverse groups. I joined as many clubs and organizations as I could, just to get involved and make friends. I now hold executive board positions through our Activity Board, Disc Golf Club, and Circle K International. I also work as an Orientation leader through the University. I have also absolutely loved the academic setting at Baldwin Wallace. I am in small classes, with some great professors. I love that I feel connected with my professors, and like I am in an area of mutual respect. I always know that I can talk to my professors about anything I need. Sophomore: Pace offers excellent and unique courses taught by seasoned, dedicated professors, and a plethora of different majors and minors for students to choose from. The dorms are good quality, are adequately accessible, but expensive, which one should expect coming to NYC. The FIDI area around the school, and its proximity to other neighborhoods, is populated with various delicious restaurants, great stores to shop in, and beautiful views to see. The dining hall experience is definitely better than most reviews of college dining options, but don't expect anything groumdbreaking (as I said before there's enough outside the school to keep you satisfied!). Sophomore: Wagner College is such a fun little community centered college. Truly, it's like a small town. Everyone knows each other and attitudes towards one another are relatively positive (Obviously there are exceptions). Every Professor I have had the pleasure to meet are very genuine and qualified people who all want their students to succeed. As a Theatre Performance major, it's been so exciting to work with professors and adjunct who are fresh out-of-the industry. This experience isn't limited to just Theatre, I have a minor in Marketing and have had nothing but a great time working with School of Business. The food here is also not too bad, I wouldn't put it high up on a pedestal however. My one major complaint is the quality of the buildings, as this is a very old campus. The dorms are slowly getting renovations here and there, but they haven't been maintained very well such as having mold. ... Read 723 reviews

The campus is beautiful and Florence is so accessible and friendly. The best part about UNA is the small class sizes and the connections that students make with their professors. I truly feel that my professors care for my education, wellbeing, and future outside of UNA. They are knowledgeable, kind, and will go out of their way to help students. Classes are small, which helps with the connection to professors and it also helps shy students (like me) feel more comfortable talking and engaging in class. If I could change anything, it would be to see their graduate programs. Freshman: While I am definitely enjoying my time at Purchase, there are a few things that I would like to see change. First, the food. There are not enough options for meals and most of time, the food is hit or miss. It is hard to find healthy food as well. Some berries would be greatly appreciated! The dorms are also not great, but could be worse. ... Read 1,173 reviews

Sport management program ranks in global top 10.

Dan Rascher

The leadership and impact of the University of San Francisco’s MS in Sport Management program were reinforced in the recent 2023 SportBusiness postgraduate course rankings: 7th in the world, 6th in the United States, and 1st on the West Coast.

Sport Management Academic Director Dan Rascher said, “Our faculty, staff, and even alumni help develop the next generation of sports business leaders to be effective and ethical leaders in the industry. These rankings recognize the impact being made — in our students’ classrooms, in their multiple internships, and in their careers.”

Leading sport management industry network and mentorship

The alumni surveyed gave the USF program a perfect score of 100% for mentorship, and it ranked 6th in global programs for its alumni and industry network. Each year, USF sport management students participate in the Alumni Mentor Program, in which they build and foster relationships with alumni that focus on professional and personal development. In the past several years, nearly 200 mentorship pairings have been made, with over 150 of the program’s alumni actively participating. Associate Program Director Ashley Sloper, also the head of professional development, believes that the Alumni Mentor Program “creates an infrastructure of student support outside of the classroom from our community of alumni working in the sports industry, leading to networking, internship, and job opportunities across California, the U.S., and around the world.”

Mentorship played a significant part in Mia Tolliver’s MS ’24 career development: “My program alumni mentor, Eddie Maisonet MA ‘16, challenges me to connect with people that I would’ve been afraid to reach out to, and keeps me accountable along the way. Eddie does not shy away from giving me honest and supportive feedback about my classwork, and letting me know what more I can do beyond being a student. Through mentorship, I learned how to advocate for myself in my work and gain confidence in my studies.”

Through mentorship, I learned how to advocate for myself in my work and gain confidence in my studies.”

A-grade sport management faculty and job support

Alumni surveyed for the SportBusiness rankings gave USF program faculty a score of 93 percent, and the program received the third-highest job support score of the 10 top-ranked global programs. The award-winning full-time and part-time faculty in the San Francisco Bay Area and Greater Los Angeles have been recognized as combining academic knowledge and skills with industry-relevant practices and connections. One example: Professor Dan Rascher’s, who has taught courses including sports economics and finance and business research methods, has used his expertise in sports economics and finance in legal cases involving the NCAA and athlete's rights for over 20 years, including in expert testimony in lawsuits like O'Bannon v. NCAA (2014) and NCAA v. Alston (2021), which was decided by the Supreme Court. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Applied Sport Management Association, and the Antitrust Enforcement Award for Outstanding Antitrust Litigation Achievement in Economics from the American Antitrust Institute.

The SportBusiness rankings were based on two surveys, one completed by course leaders and another taken by alumni who graduated in 2020. The rankings considered student measures of teaching, support, access, and value, the extent to which alumni were employed both 12 months and three years after graduation, and the demographics of the students and faculty in the program.

When Buying a Home Is Treated as a National Security Threat

A new Florida law prohibits many Chinese citizens from buying homes because of national security concerns. Critics say it has fueled discrimination and chilled the local property market.

A group of protesters hold signs that say “Say No to The New Chinese Exclusion Act!” and “Say No to Discrimination!” among other slogans.

By Amy Qin and Patricia Mazzei

Amy Qin reported from Miami and Orlando, Fla., and Patricia Mazzei from Miami.

After years of living in dorms and subpar apartments, Lisa Li could not wait to close on her new home.

The one-bedroom condo in Miami’s financial district had a view of the river, was in a safe neighborhood and, Ms. Li heard, had neighbors who were much like her — less party, more chill. So Ms. Li, a 28-year-old who came to the United States 11 years ago as a college student from China, put in an offer, had her bid accepted and began ordering furniture.

Then things took a sharp turn. At the last minute, the title company raised concerns about a small United States Coast Guard outpost near South Beach a few miles away. Her purchase, the company said, might run afoul of a new Florida law that prohibits many Chinese citizens from buying property in the state, especially near military installations, airports or refineries.

Under the law, Ms. Li could face prison time, and the sellers and real estate agents could be held liable. The deal collapsed.

“The whole experience was very hurtful and tiring,” Ms. Li said in a recent interview at a cafe in Miami, where she is still renting. “I just feel that, as someone who has lived and worked in this country for many years, and as a legal taxpayer, at the very least I should have the ability to buy a home that I can live in.”

More than three dozen states have enacted or are considering similar laws restricting land purchases by Chinese citizens and companies, arguing that such transactions are a growing threat to national security and that the federal government has failed to stop Chinese Communist Party influence in America.

Florida’s law, which went into effect in July, is among the furthest reaching. In addition to barring Chinese entities from buying agricultural land, it effectively prohibits most Chinese individuals without a green card from purchasing residential property. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the measure just before launching his Republican presidential campaign, warning voters that China represented the biggest threat to the United States.

“Today, Florida makes it very clear: We don’t want the C.C.P. in the Sunshine State,” Mr. DeSantis said last year.

In more than a dozen interviews, Chinese residents in Florida voiced frustrations about being cut off from the ultimate American dream . Other residents of Chinese descent said they faced discrimination as they tried to buy a home. Some said they lived in fear over whether they may have inadvertently violated the law.

Civil rights and Asian American groups are unaware of anyone being charged with violating the law. But some people of Chinese descent said they feel the anti-China sentiment intensifying. The law is currently being challenged in federal court.

“I never felt any discrimination here before this law,” said Jin Bian, a Chinese software developer who works in Tampa and is among those now barred from buying property. “But now I’m wondering if I need to leave Florida.”

The law has also had an apparent chilling effect on the real estate industry, an important part of the state’s economy. Developers often rely on Chinese investors to help build projects in Florida, and the law appears to have barred such financing, prompting pushback from a prominent real estate lobbying group.

Yukey Hoo, a real estate agent in Winter Garden, a suburb of Orlando, estimated that she has turned away 10 potential clients — about one-fifth of her usual business — because she could not determine whether they were eligible to buy property.

The law technically applies to people who are “domiciled” in China and don’t hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, and much of the confusion has centered on what “domicile” means. Sellers and real estate agents can face up to one year of prison time for violating the law.

“Every day I am getting phone calls from people asking if they can buy a house under the law,” said Ms. Hoo, who has sold real estate in Florida for 10 years. “I tell them to talk to an attorney, but for those who aren’t sure about their status, we don’t want to take the risk.”

The Florida law restricts “foreign principals” from six other “countries of concern,” like Venezuela and Cuba, from owning property. But the most onerous restrictions — and harshest penalties — are specifically aimed at Chinese citizens.

The law was part of a broader package passed by the Florida Legislature last spring that included a bill restricting the state’s public universities and colleges from offering research positions to students from China and other countries. That law is also being challenged in court .

“The deeper that you look under the hood, the deeper that you see China has been clandestinely going after land grabs in the United States,” said State Representative David Borrero, a Republican from the Miami area who was one of the sponsors of the land law. “We can’t just have that in our backyard.”

Mr. Borrero disagreed with critics who said the property bill was discriminatory. “Our national security interests come first,” he said.

The Chinese government has a record of using economic coercion and espionage to further its geopolitical goals and, in recent years, both the United States and China have stepped up efforts to advance their spying capabilities around the world.

State lawmakers have been especially worried about Chinese investment in agricultural land and territory near military installations, fearing that China could throttle America’s food supply or use the land as a spy post. Chinese interests own less than 1 percent of foreign-held agricultural land in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

National security experts said that the specific threat posed by Chinese people owning homes has not been clearly articulated.

Holden Triplett, a former F.B.I. counterintelligence official who led the bureau’s offices in China, said that Chinese citizens are more likely to have family ties to China that could be weaponized by state security agencies there. But he said categorical bans could further alienate a Chinese diaspora community that could be of particular help to the United States in the event of a conflict with China.

“We need to be careful about these blunt instrument laws,” said Mr. Triplett, who left the F.B.I. in 2020 and co-founded Trenchcoat Advisors, a risk management consultancy. “Let’s do the work to find out what’s happening and to see if there is another way we can address this problem.”

Civil rights groups and residents have challenged the Florida law in federal court on grounds that it violates the Equal Protection Clause and the Fair Housing Act, and that it undercuts the federal government powers on foreign affairs.

“There’s no evidence that Chinese homeownership poses harm to national security,” said Ashley Gorski, senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, one of several groups that brought the suit.

Mae Ngai, a professor of history and Asian American Studies at Columbia University, said the Florida law recalled the alien land laws from the early 20th century, which effectively prohibited Asian immigrants from buying farmland and, in some cases, homes in many states.

“They saw Asians as an alien invasion that was going to take over America,” Dr. Ngai said.

After the bill was introduced last spring, the Chinese community in Florida began frantically organizing rallies and door-knocking sessions.

In Texas, opposition from the Asian American community, including a former Republican lawmaker of Chinese descent , helped roll back some provisions in a similar bill . But in Florida, the Chinese community is just 0.6 percent of the population. Many are first-generation immigrants who moved to the state to study or work at universities. And there are very few Asian American politicians in the Legislature.

The Florida activists’ dissent barely registered.

Lobbyists for the prominent hedge fund Citadel, which moved to Miami from Chicago in 2022 and employs a large number of Chinese citizens, were more effective and managed to secure an exemption for Chinese people on valid work visas to buy one primary residence as long as the property is smaller than two acres and not within five miles of a military installation.

But most of the initially proposed restrictions were kept in place, and the impact of the law was felt almost immediately.

Sunny Long, a real estate agent in Tallahassee, said that she now pores over Google Maps to approximate where her Chinese clients could be eligible to buy property. Florida has around 20 major military bases, many small military outposts and even more critical facilities like airports and water treatment plants that could be covered under the law.

“Many of my clients would like to buy in a certain neighborhood that has a good school district, but it’s too close to the airport,” she said. “It’s been a big test for me.”

Asian Americans are also concerned that the law has led to profiling of anyone perceived to be Chinese, no matter their citizenship or residency status.

One man said a real estate agent at an open house asked him if he was qualified to buy the house after he chatted in Mandarin with his parents.

Evelyn Yang, a real estate agent in Palm Beach Gardens, said that shortly after the law went into effect, she repeatedly made inquiries about an apartment in Miami on behalf of a Chinese client who had permanent residency. She didn’t hear back from the seller’s agent for days, she said.

“When they finally returned my calls, they just said, ‘Can your buyer buy? Can’t Chinese people not buy right now?’” Ms. Yang recalled. “They see that our names are Chinese and assume that we can’t buy.”

Such interactions could be considered intentional discrimination based on national origin, which is prohibited by the Fair Housing Act of 1968, said Scott Chang, senior counsel for the National Fair Housing Alliance. On Monday, the alliance and several other groups announced a new lawsuit making that allegation.

Nearly one year after her home-buying attempt fell through, Ms. Li, the renter in Miami, still vividly recalls the days spent frantically trying to salvage her deal.

The desperate calls to attorneys and state lawmakers. The time spent calculating distances. Ms. Li’s real estate agent even drove to the Coast Guard outpost on South Beach to try to determine if it was a “military installation” under the law.

Ms. Li said she still loved living in Miami. It was clean compared to New York City, where she lived before. She loved taking tennis lessons at the courts in Palm Island Park and exploring the diverse food scene with her friends.

But the experience left her with a bitter taste.

“I think I may just have to leave,” she said. “Who knows what policies they might come up with next?”
