PhD cos’è e come funziona il dottorato di ricerca all’estero

Tutto ciò che devi sapere sul PhD, il dottorato di ricerca all’estero.

Phd: significato, cos’è e in quali università si può conseguire.

Se sei uno studente universitario o un ricercatore e vuoi continuare a studiare all’estero hai sicuramente sentito parlare del PhD.

Ma il PhD cos’è nello specifico, come funziona e come iscriversi a un dottorato fuori dall’Italia?

Devi sapere che il significato di PhD è “dottore di filosofia” (dal termine Philosophiae Doctor, chiamato in inglese anche Doctor of Philosophy). Ma non lasciarti confondere dalla citazione alla filosofia: il termine è riferito letteralmente all’amore per il sapere, e il PhD è disponibile praticamente in tutti gli ambiti di studio, anche quelli meno “mainstream”.

Il PhD è il dottorato di ricerca estero , il massimo grado universitario che una persona possa raggiungere. In particolare questo titolo appartiene alla Gran Bretagna e ai Paesi anglofoni. Puoi dunque iscriverti a un PhD non solo all’ università nel Regno Unito , ma anche se scegli di studiare in Australia , studiare in Canada , studiare in Nuova Zelanda , studiare negli USA e in altri Paesi esteri che presentano il sistema educativo anglosassone .

Si tratta quindi un titolo Postgraduate a cui puoi accedere soltanto dopo aver ottenuto un Master Degree o un titolo equivalente all’estero o, in alternativa, una laurea specialistica in Italia. Viene rilasciato agli studenti che portano a termine un lavoro di ricerca originale, indipendente , che offre un contributo davvero significativo alla conoscenza di un determinato settore.

Sappiamo bene che chi desidera studiare all’estero necessita di tante informazioni prima di prendere una decisione, figuriamoci se si tratta di un progetto così importante come il PhD. Per questo motivo in questo articolo vogliamo approfondire tutto ciò che dovresti sapere se vuoi svolgere un dottorato di ricerca all’estero, cosa si fa durante il dottorato fuori dall’Italia e se il lavoro di ricerca indipendente sia pagato o meno.

Dottorato di ricerca: come funziona all’estero e quanto dura?

Un PhD si compone di diverse fasi. Dimenticati, naturalmente, delle lezioni in aula e degli esami e dai il benvenuto a un programma di ricerca pura. Ecco come si articola, generalmente, un dottorato all’estero:

• Revisione critica della letteratura, ovvero una sintesi critica dei lavori pubblicati su uno specifico ambito, in modo che gli argomenti trattati siano aggiornati nella maniera più accurata possibile.
• Lavoro di ricerca originale e raccolta dei risultati.
• Produzione di una tesi che presenti anche delle conclusioni originali da te sviluppate.
• Scrittura della tesi di PhD (di solito le università estere richiedono una tesi di massimo 80.000 parole escluse note a piè di pagina, riferimenti e bibliografia).
• Esporre e difendere la tesi di PhD davanti a una commissione accademica.

In genere l’intero PhD ruota su una proposta di ricerca da te presentata per l’ammissione al programma stesso, e il lavoro si svolge in un arco di tempo che può andare da minimo 3 a massimo 5 o 6 anni (questo tempo massimo viene raggiunto molto raramente).

Cosa si fa durante il dottorato all’estero (PhD)?

Di solito un PhD prevede circa 3, 4 o più anni di studio sul campo a tempo pieno, in cui si completa un lavoro di ricerca originale volto a sostenere una tesi, per poi difenderla; la tesi deve essere inizialmente presentata in forma scritta come tesi o dissertazione, accompagnata dagli articoli pubblicati e, in base alle esigenze dell’università, anche dai lavori svolti durante il corso.

Al termine del PhD è poi necessario presentare la tesi oralmente in modo da difenderla davanti a una commissione d’esame (più o meno ampia). La difesa della tesi di un PhD dura circa due o tre ore e la commissione valuta l’effettivo valore e l’effettiva originalità del lavoro compiuto durante gli anni di ricerca.

Durante un PhD puoi svolgere inoltre ruoli come tutor, supervisore o assistente di un professore universitario in modo da poter ottimizzare anche le spese del vitto e alloggio all’estero.

Devi sapere, però, che accedere a un dottorato di ricerca all’estero non è semplice, in quanto ci sono tantissimi studenti provenienti da ogni parte del mondo che premono per svolgere un PhD presso un’università in Australia, nel Regno Unito, negli USA o in un altro Stato estero.

È quindi fondamentale avere tutti i requisiti di iscrizione richiesti dal programma a cui si vuole accedere.

Requisiti di ammissione al PhD

I requisiti di ammissione richiesti dalle università estere per un PhD si riferiscono principalmente alle seguenti aree:

• Requisiti accademici (in breve, Bachelor e Master con ottime o eccellenti valutazioni, sia singole che finali).
• Competenze linguistiche (il livello di inglese richiesto da un PhD è elevato e comprovato da una certificazione di inglese ufficiale come il test IELTS ).
• Referenze e dichiarazioni personali.
• Esperienza  in ricerca  e meglio ancora se hai delle pubblicazioni

Andiamo ad approfondire questi punti.

Competenze accademiche per l’ammissione a un PhD all’estero.

Tendenzialmente le università estere richiedono ottimi o eccellenti voti accademici relativi ai titoli di studio pregressi. Per accedere a un PhD è necessario avere un Bachelor (laurea di I livello) e un Master (l’equivalente della nostra laurea specialistica) conseguiti con buonissime votazioni.

Spesso un dottorato di ricerca all’estero richiede una laurea con lode e un Master di alto livello , come un Master by Research (un MRes prevede non solo lezioni in aula ed esami ma anche un progetto di ricerca supportato da tutor e docenti universitari). I requisiti accademici di ammissione a un PhD potrebbero inoltre variare in base alla tipologia di finanziamento : in genere sono più alti se si richiede di accedere a un dottorato con borsa di studio e meno pretenziosi se il PhD è auto-finanziato.

Se quindi ti sei posto la seguente domanda: “ Il dottorato di ricerca è pagato? ”, sappi che un PhD è retribuito qualora tu riuscissi a vincere una borsa di studio, superando molti candidati e avendo tutti i requisiti richiesti per accedere, mentre è finanziato dallo studente (dunque a pagamento) qualora non riuscissi ad accedere alla Scholarship o scegliessi un PhD senza borsa di studio.

Molte aree di ricerca (in particolare le discipline scientifiche, quelle umanistiche e la psicologia) necessitano la scelta di un docente universitario che svolga il ruolo di supervisore e di consulente prima che gli studenti vengano ufficialmente accettati al programma di PhD.

Comunque sia, a prescindere dalle richieste dell’ateneo, è bene che ti rivolga a un professore dell’università da te scelta ancor prima di compilare la domanda per partecipare al PhD; il docente può dirti se il tuo progetto di ricerca sia in linea con gli interessi della facoltà o se sia meglio intraprendere un’altra strada.

Competenze di inglese per accedere a un PhD.

Gran parte dei PhD all’estero (anzi… Tutti i PhD ) richiedono una certificazione ufficiale di lingua inglese , o della lingua in cui desideri svolgere il dottorato – ad esempio in Canada potrebbe essere anche il francese -. A tal proposito ti consigliamo fortemente di sostenere il test IELTS Academic , la migliore certificazione di lingua inglese , o dimostrare di aver completato un programma universitario all’estero (per esempio un Bachelor o un Master) svolto interamente in inglese.

Di solito le università richiedono agli studenti che vogliono accedere a un PhD dei requisiti di inglese elevati, come un punteggio all’esame IELTS di almeno 6.5 o più .

Referenze universitarie e lavorative per l’ammissione a un PhD all’estero.

Tantissime università richiedono il tuo Curriculum Vitae (in inglese), la documentazione relativa al tuo eventuale lavoro e tutti i documenti e le certificazioni relativi al tuo percorso universitario. Naturalmente sono utilissime e decisamente ben accette eventuali pubblicazioni e progetti di ricerca pregressi .

Non è tutto: chi si candida a un PhD deve anche fornire delle referenze scritte da persone che conoscono nei dettagli il tuo percorso universitario, come i tuoi supervisor, i tutor, i docenti e gli assistenti dei professori. Le lettere di raccomandazione devono essere dettagliate e far riferimento al tuo impegno e al tuo rendimento accademico, senza tralasciare le tue doti di ricerca e il tuo forte interesse nella materia scelta per il PhD.

Ebbene sì: praticamente tutte le università estere chiedono un tuo documento scritto in cui dichiari la tua passione per l’argomento scelto per il dottorato e le motivazioni che ti spingono a scegliere proprio quel progetto di ricerca.

Insomma, l’accademia deve sapere perché dovrebbe scegliere proprio te fra tantissimi studenti internazionali candidati al PhD, e sarebbe meglio che il tuo interesse per l’ambito di ricerca sia comprovato da ulteriori studi, attività extra-scolastiche e di volontariato, pubblicazioni e altro ancora.

Between academia and labour market—the occupational outcomes of PhD graduates in a period of academic reforms and economic crisis

The article examines the mid-term occupational outcomes of two cohorts of PhDs graduated in 2004 and 2008 in Italy. This comparison allows the authors to explore changing PhD’s occupational prospects after recent academic reforms (e.g. cuts to public funding, introduction of fixed-term positions for assistant professors) and the economic crisis. Population data from the ‘Istat Survey on the Occupational Outcomes of PhD graduates’ is used to analyse PhD’s employability, international mobility, type of contract and occupation 5 years after obtaining a doctoral degree. Empirical results show that academic reforms and the economic crisis coincided with decreasing employment in academia and increasing chances of having a fixed-term contract, being employed abroad and working in research-related occupations outside academia. Moreover, PhD graduates from hard disciplines, such as engineering, are generally better off compared to PhD graduates in soft fields, such as sociology. Finally, the results suggest that the academic reforms reduced the chances to work in academia more in soft rather than in hard academic disciplines.

It is possible that reforms of the Italian academic system led a growing proportion of PhD holders to pursue an academic career abroad. However, we do not test that argument in this paper.

In the first round (2009), the survey was carried out between December 2009 and February 2010, while in the second round (2014), the survey was carried out between February and July. Therefore, the 2006–2010 cohorts and the 2004–2008 cohorts were surveyed approximately 3 and 5 years after the completion of their doctoral studies, respectively.

Respondents were asked whether their jobs involve research activities ‘mainly’, ‘partly’ or ‘not at all’.

This variable is conditional on being employed, and therefore is only used when analysing outcomes related to contract type, work abroad and type of job.

Research Doctorate (Ph.D.)

The Research Doctorate (Ph.D.) constitutes the highest level of education in the university system. Its goal is to prepare researchers who have the skills and aptitude to pursue activities of high quality research in industries, in research centers, in public administrations and in academic institutions. Politecnico di Milano offers Doctoral Programmes in all fields of Architecture, Engineering and Industrial Design. Access to the Doctoral Programmes is selective, based on the verification of the research capacities and potentials by curriculum examination. The Research Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree is awarded at the completion of the Programme, which lasts at least three years.

You have the opportunity to come to Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University as an international PhD student, either in the framework of a joint PhD, a doctoral research stay, or as a freemover.

You want to embark on a joint PhD programme between Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and a foreign institution? You will find below information on how a joint PhD is organised, how to apply and funding opportunities.

Supervision The PhD student conducts his/her research under the responsibility of two thesis supervisors: one at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and the other one in a foreign institution. The two supervisors are fully and jointly committed to exercise their functions as tutors. Location The doctoral student stays alternately at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and in the partner university. The length of stay in each institution depends on the scientific requirements and the conditions for preparing the thesis, but it should not be less than one semester. Duration The usual duration of a joint PhD is three years, although a derogation of one year may be granted by the head of the institution on the basis of a legitimate request from the student, after consultation with the thesis supervisor and the doctoral school. Enrolment fees The PhD student is enrolled both at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and at the partner university, but is exempt from the payment of tuition fees at one of these two institutions. PhD viva The joint PhD leads to a single defence recognised by both parties. At the end of this defence, the doctoral student receives both the doctoral degree from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and the one from the partner institution. Language The language in which the thesis is written and defended is defined by the agreement concluded between the two institutions. When this language is not French, the thesis is completed by an abstract in French.

After applying for a joint PhD at both Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a foreign university, you must establish a joint PhD agreement between these two institutions. What to include in the joint PhD agreement Although Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University provides a joint PhD agreement template (Word - 67 KB) , it is not strictly mandatory as your contract is the result of an agreement between the two partner institutions. If you wish to prepare a joint PhD between Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and an Italian university, you must use the agreement template of the Université Franco-Italienne (UFI) (Word - 50 KB - French/Italian) . If you wish to prepare a joint PhD between Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a Swiss or Quebec university, you must ask the latter to draw up your agreement according to the template already established with French universities.

The agreement can be bilingual (each article being successively written in both languages) or in two versions (one in French and another one in a foreign language). Signature of the joint PhD agreement The joint PhD agreement must be signed in three copies by yourself and by three people from each of the partner institutions (the thesis supervisor, the director of the doctoral school and the president of the university). At Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, the agreement must be submitted to the thesis department of your discipline in order to be forwarded to the research department and then to the president of the university for signature.

There is no deadline for signing the joint PhD agreement, but it is normally signed during the first year of enrolment in a PhD programme. This stage usually takes a very long time, given the number of signatories and the distance between them.

Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme (PhD level)

• Be accepted as part of a joint PhD at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University in one of the following academic fields: Economics, Management, Law, Political science, Sciences (Mathematics, Communication sciences, Environmental science),
• Be a foreign citizen (priority is given to citizens from developing and industrialised countries),
• Be less than 35 years old
• Amount and duration : €1400 per month (+ round-trip ticket) / 10 months maximum

PhD research stay

Find out the procedure to follow if you are a PhD student at a foreign university and wish to undertake a research stay at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

You must first submit your research project to one of the professors at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University with an HDR (accreditation to supervise research). The list of these professors is available from the websites of the university's doctoral schools (ED):

If a professor agrees to supervise your research stay at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, he or she will issue you with a letter of invitation.

If your home institution and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University have signed a student exchange agreement in your academic field and at your level of studies, you can take part in study mobility.  Once you have been preselected by your home university, you will receive a link from the International Relations Department of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne to access the application form, which you will have to fill in and submit before 30 th May (if you wish to arrive in September for the first semester or the entire academic year) or before 30 th October (if you wish to arrive in January for the second semester). Before your departure, you must sign a learning agreement that lists the classes that you will take at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (among those open to exchange students) and/or activities (offered by doctoral schools) in which you wish to take part during your mobility at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

You must then fill in the online application form with the following documents:

• Learning agreement in  French (Word - 892 KB)  or in  English (Word - 891 KB)  completed and signed by yourself and by the academic teacher or research director of your home institution. Your learning agreement will be signed by your academic advisor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne once you arrive in France. 
• Letter of invitation from the professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University who agrees to supervise your research stay.
• Language certificate of minimum level B2 ( DELF / DALF , TCF or a letter written by a French teacher from your home university). If you choose classes taught in English, you must also provide a letter written by an English teacher from your home university or an equivalent language certificate of English ( IELTS , TOEFL , etc.).
• Copy of transcript of grades obtained in higher education, with a translation in French (see  grade conversion table (PDF - 315 KB - French) ).
• Copy of the passport or identity card .
• If you are an exchange student outside the Erasmus+ programme, you will also need to provide a CV , a cover letter and a letter of recommendation .

Once your application is accepted by Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, you will receive your admission certificate by the end of June, and you will be able to enrol as an exchange student to be exempt from the payment of tuition fees at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. During your stay in France, you will remain enrolled in your home institution and continue to pay tuition fees there. You also have the possibility to carry out an internship at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. For more information on the procedure, please consult your home institution and the relevant doctoral school in Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

If your home university participates in the Erasmus+ programme, you can set up an Erasmus+ agreement for traineeship which could enable you to obtain an Erasmus+ "traineeship" grant from your home university.

Otherwise, you must draw up a hosting (or internship) agreement setting out your working conditions at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, in particular the duration of your stay and the terms and conditions for your research supervision. This agreement must be signed by your host laboratory at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, your home university and yourself. For more information, get in touch with your doctoral school.

If your application is accepted, you will have to enrol at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne as an unregistered student. This will allow you to obtain your student card and access to the university libraries.

You come from a partner institution

• You are a PhD student at Columbia University (New York): check out the  Alliance program grants
• If you are coming under an Erasmus+ student exchange agreement, you can apply for an Erasmus+ "study" grant or an Erasmus+ "traineeship" grant. In both cases, we encourage you to contact your home institution to find out how the grants are awarded.

You do not come from a partner institution If your home university participates in the Erasmus+ programme, you can establish an internship agreement and obtain an Erasmus+ "traineeship" grant from it.

Full degree application

Find below the steps to follow to apply to Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University as a full degree international doctoral student. Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne will apply the same tuition fee rates for the academic year 2024/2025 to French and foreign students regardless of whether they come from a European Union member state (voted by the Board of Governors on 26th October 2023).

You need to check that the thesis topic you plan to cover has not already been defended or is not in preparation, using the two following websites:

Submit your research project to one of the professors at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University with an  HDR  (accreditation to supervise research). The list of these professors is available from the websites of the university's doctoral schools (ED):

Once a professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University who is authorised to supervise research has given his/her agreement to supervise your thesis, send your application to the doctoral school to which he/she belongs. This file must be sent between mid-June and the end of October, and must include the following documents:

• Form completed online at  ecandidat.univ-paris1.fr , duly dated and signed
• Copy of your master's degree or equivalent (the  ENIC-NARIC France can provide a statement of comparability between your degree and the French master's degree)
• Thesis project in two versions: long version (2 to 3 pages) and abstract (300 words maximum)
• Written agreement of the Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne professor who has agreed to supervise your thesis (this professor must be accredited to supervise research).

Your application will be reviewed in early November by the thesis commission of the doctoral school you have applied to. If you are accepted, you will have to sign the thesis charter upon your first enrolment.

Phd e dottorato di ricerca: cosa sono e a cosa servono.

I percorsi formativi post laurea sono disegnati per ottenere competenze e skill ultra specialistiche rispetto ai corsi di laurea triennali biennali e a ciclo unico. Ma tra il cosiddetto PhD e un dottorato di ricerca, quale dei due scegliere?

Pur considerati erroneamente sinonimi, queste espressioni rappresentano titoli accademici diversi. Come diverse sono le prospettive di lavoro offerti agli studenti dell’uno o dell’altro filone.

Il Dottorato di Ricerca

Il Dottorato di ricerca è il livello di istruzione più alto riconosciuto in Italia . Certifica che il detentore può fare ricerca nel campo d’interesse scelto; è quindi indispensabile per chiunque voglia intraprendere la carriera accademica.

Ha, inoltre, un peso specifico in termini di punteggio nei concorsi pubblici : da 2 ad 1 punto a seconda della pertinenza della materia rispetto alla classe di concorso. Lo studente, facendo domanda di ammissione al concorso di dottorato di ricerca, si troverà ad affrontare una prova scritta, orale o entrambe. Il numero dei posti  messo a disposizione dai centri universitari o dagli enti di ricerca nazinali - ad esempio il CNR - viene ripartito in:

- Dottorati di ricerca con borsa;

- Dottorati di ricerca con retribuzione mensile;

- Dottorati di ricerca senza borsa; 

Nell’ultimo caso lo studente è tenuto a versare le tasse universitarie.  Per tutti e tre i tipi di dottorato, la durata del ciclo può variare da un minimo di 3 ad un massimo di 5 anni e si conclude con l’elaborazione di una tesi.

Il Philosophiae Doctor (PhD)

Il PhD rappresenta invece l’ultimo livello di istruzione universitaria mondiale e conferisce allo studente il titolo di Doctor Philosophiae. Si sceglie di affrontare un PhD non solo per intraprendere la carriera accademica, ma anche per avere accesso a posizioni più prestigiose all’interno delle aziende.

L’ammissione al ciclo dipende da meriti accademici maturati in precedenza e dal progetto per il quale si chiede di essere finanziati. La durata è di 4-5 anni, durante i quali lo studente, sostenuto da una retribuzione mensile, è impegnato in corsi, conferenze e scadenze stringenti.

PhD e Dottorato di ricerca: quale scegliere?

Pur avendo chiare le differenze dei due percorsi, la domanda di partenza di uno studente può rimanere la stessa: optare per un dottorato di ricerca o un PhD all’estero? La scelta spesso esula dalla volontà o meno di essere un cervello in fuga. Infatti, in Italia il dottorato serve quasi esclusivamente per inserirsi nel mondo accademico. Le aziende nostrane non sanno ancora che valore aggiunto dare ad un potenziale lavoratore con dottorato, eccezion fatta per i casi in cui le società - specie se attive nel campo dell’Information and Communication Technology o dell’aerospazio - abbiano divisioni R&D e laboratori con posizioni aperte esclusivamente a chi abbia i titoli per concorrere. 

E’ il caso della ricerca aerospaziale o dei centri di sviluppo delle reti di connessione ultraveloci 5G o di calcolo computazionale (a tal proposito potete leggere l’esperienza di Ivan, che è diventato consulente per il supercalcolo partendo da un dottorato a Ferrara ). 

Al contrario, il PhD qualifica il Doctor come una risorsa soprattutto per l’azienda che lo assume . Infatti, il percorso a cui un dottorando nel resto del mondo si deve attenere è meno individuale e  inserito in un contesto di ricerca applicata fattivamente più formativo (pensate ai team di sviluppo e analisi big data dell’MIT di Boston o alla ricerca medico-scientifica).

Conviene quindi ottenere un PhD rispetto a un normale dottorato di ricerca?  

Non sempre. Nei principali paesi europei e negli Stati Uniti è vivo da un po’ di tempo il dibattito sugli svantaggi riscontrati dai PhDs nel mondo del lavoro. L’impegno investito durante gli anni di studio non sarebbe adeguatamente compensato. Secondo l’economista Bernard Casey, a fronte di un minimo di 4 estenuanti anni di studi ed energie investite in progetti anche complessi - specie in settori non STEM, come Filosofia, Letteratura e Scienze Sociali o Scienze umanistiche come Economia e Giurisprudenza - i nostri detentori di PhD guadagnerebbero solo il 26% in più contro il 23% di coloro che hanno una laurea di secondo livello, cioè la Laurea Magistrale italiana.

Prima di scegliere se proseguire gli studi e il proprio perfezionamento, con un dottorato o un PhD all’estero occorre valutare i seguenti elementi:

- Sbocchi lavorativi: se la prosecuzione degli studi sia richiesta dal proprio settore lavorativo, perché ad esempio certe skills o competenze si possano apprendere solo tramite un corso ad hoc;

- Network e job placement: se le università o le accademie presso cui si intende frequentare un percorso post laurea abbiano un network esclusivo di aziende e centri di ricerca in cui entrare con percorso preferenziale rispetto a un candidato che abbia solo il titolo di laurea (è il caso del settore chimico-farmaceutico o della ricerca in fisica se si vuole lavorare al CERN di Ginevra); informazioni che è possibile reperire ad esempio cercando su LinkedIn le posizioni di lavoro filtrate per “people” e spulciando nei titoli dei profili così emersi il titolo di studio conseguito rispetto alla posizione lavorativa ottenuta;

- Go-to-market: se le competenze che si acquisiranno con il dottorato o il PhD saranno in qualche modo spendibili in applicazioni sul campo, ad esempio per lo sviluppo di soluzioni eco-sostenibili o eco-compatibili o nella filiera dei beni di largo consumo (a tal proposito consigliamo di leggere anche gli articoli relativi a queste industry: Cosa vuol dire lavorare nel settore dei beni di consumo   e Dove va l’industria automotive? ).

Il consiglio rimane quello di scegliere esclusivamente sulla base delle esigenze lavorative e di vita.  Fare un PhD all’estero impone un investimento materiale e di energie notevole, ma si rivelerà fruttuoso e interessante. Tuttavia, il Dottorato di ricerca apre comunque porte in aziende ed enti R&D che valutano la capacità tecnica del candidato più che la quantità di titoli conseguiti. Dottorato di ricerca o PhD: significato, quando, come e perché si fa

Cos’è, come funziona e perché fare un PhD? Scopriamo il significato di questa sigla e a cosa serve questo titolo di studio

PhD significato : Philosophiae Doctor . Letteralmente “dottore di filosofia”. Il PhD è il più alto titolo accademico rilasciato da un’università, successivo alla laurea. In Italia si chiama dottorato di ricerca , mentre la sigla PhD è stata introdotta nel mondo accademico dall’ inglese , dove sta a significare “ Doctor of Philosophy ” (e si trova anche nella forma DPhil ). Nonostante la forma latina, doctor philosophiae, però, il significato di PhD riguarda un titolo di studio accademico in qualsiasi materia (e non solo la filosofia).

Cos’è un PhD e chi può farlo

Come accennavamo prima, il PhD è un titolo di studio che si ottiene dopo la laurea , nella maggior parte dei casi magistrale (in Italia è requisito obbligatorio), per approfondire un particolare argomento legato a una materia studiata nell’arco del percorso universitario. Il PhD dura solitamente 3 o 4 anni , periodo in cui oltre ad approfondire la propria conoscenza disciplinare partecipando a seminari e convegni di ricerca, i dottorandi – o PhD students – devono portare avanti un progetto di ricerca . Il progetto di ricerca è uno studio scientifico rigoroso su un argomento disciplinare molto specifico. Comprende un chiaro obiettivo (una teoria da confermare/confutare/approfondire), una metodologia precisa (raccolta e analisi di dati osservabili) e un resoconto delle proprie osservazioni. Per accedere al dottorato di ricerca, il progetto deve essere approvato da un professore che accetta di esserne “ supervisore “; dopodiché è necessario essere ammessi alla scuola di dottorato superando il processo di selezione (un concorso in Italia; un concorso o una candidatura diretta all’estero). Lo studente ammesso come dottorando riceve, solitamente, una borsa di studio – uno stipendio mensile per la propria attività di ricerca. La borsa di dottorato si aggira intorno ai 100/1.3000 euro o più , ma può variare da università a università (anche a seconda dei fondi a disposizione).

PhD significato: A cosa serve un PhD?

L’obiettivo del PhD o dottorato di ricerca è formare ricercatori in una particolare materia (scientifica o umanistica) che possano contribuire alla condivisione del sapere all’interno della comunità scientifica e accademica – ma non solo. Il dottorato di ricerca, infatti, è il primo passo per chi desidera iniziare una carriera da ricercatore o da professore universitario . È importante però ricordare che i ricercatori non lavorano solo all’interno delle università , ma trovano impiego anche presso aziende e altri enti interessati a promuovere lo sviluppo scientifico e teconologico o, più in generale, quello culturale. Chiaramente, un PhD in materie scientifiche permette di fare ricerca in settori come la medicina , la chimica, l’astrofisica, l’ ingegneria e l’informatica, settori che spesso anche le aziende intendono finanziare, ad esempio per il lancio di una nuova tecnologia o di un servizio digitale per i propri clienti. Un dottorato in scienze umane , invece, dà accesso, oltre che alla ricerca e all’insegnamento universitario , a incarichi di responsabilità in progetti e contesti culturali di vario genere (musei, enciclopedie, istituzioni politiche, enti e aziende impegnate nella promozione dell’educazione, delle arti e della cultura).

Incidente sul lavoro: operaio muore schiacciato in una cava nel potentino

L'incidente è avvenuto a pignola. l'uomo di 55 anni lavorava per una ditta di inerti. vani i soccorsi del 118, secondo una prima ricostruzione l'operaio è morto per traumi da schiacciamento per l'impatto con un mezzo di lavoro.

Un operaio di 55 anni ha perso la vita in una cava a Pignola, in provincia di Potenza, dove lavorava per una ditta di inerti. Vani i soccorsi del 118, arrivato con eliambulanza. Dalle prime informazioni, l'uomo è morto per traumi da schiacciamento per l'impatto con un mezzo di lavoro; la dinamica è ancora in fase di accertamento. Sulla vicenda procedono i carabinieri.        

Cordoglio è stato espresso dall'Ugl. ''Le indagini daranno una  risposta e accerteranno le responsabilità - ha dichiarato il  segretario provinciale Giuseppe Palumbo - ma l'Ugl ritiene che indignarsi per quanto quotidianamente accade sui posti di lavoro non  basti più. Questo ennesimo dramma sul lavoro ha spezzato una famiglia e una comunità e fotografa un problema evidente, cioè la mancanza di sicurezza. Riteniamo che sia doveroso implementare i controlli per verificare il rispetto delle norme e promuovere una vera e propria cultura della sicurezza sul lavoro. È necessario puntare sulla formazione e su un addestramento adeguato a cominciare dalle scuole secondarie''.

Bologna, 14 maggio 2024 –  Elly Schlein, ieri in tour in Emilia-Romagna per lanciare la volata elettorale tra Europee e amministrative, marca le differenze tra centrosinistra e centrodestra. Ma soprattutto tra lei, segretaria del Pd, e la premier Giorgia Meloni, in vista del famoso confronto tv del 23 maggio : "Da una parte c’è un approccio ipocrita, dall’altra il Pd che ha idee e proposte su sanità, lavoro, scuola".

Segretaria, partiamo dalle previsioni: che risultato si aspetta dalle Europee? Oltre il 20% come dice Stefano Bonaccini?

"L’Europa deve decidere in quale futuro dovranno vivere le sue cittadine e i suoi cittadini, se affidarlo a chi sa solo alimentare le paure – non essendo in grado di risolvere i problemi – o a chi decide di accettare le sfide e costruire un’Europa più sociale e di pace. Abbiamo liste competitive, forti, con una linea chiara su temi cardine come la sanità, la scuola, il lavoro, l’ambiente e sono certa che otterremo un ottimo risultato".

Lei ha chiesto le dimissioni del governatore Giovanni Toti a seguito dello scandalo ligure. La vicenda avrà un impatto sulle urne dell’8 e 9 giugno?

"Osservo solo che quando ci sono indagini in cui emergono quadri gravissimi noi siamo i primi a sostenere il lavoro della magistratura, pretendere chiarezza e quando serve anche le dimissioni dei nostri amministratori. Dall’altra parte, invece, le inchieste interessano solo se colpiscono gli avversari. E quando un presidente di Regione viene arrestato, arrivano i ministri a fare l’avvocato d’ufficio...".

La polarizzazione tra centrosinistra e centrodestra avrà il suo apice nel confronto tra lei e Meloni. Gli altri partiti (e leader) sono sulle barricate e il M5s bolla il duello come «una presa in giro». Che cosa risponde?

"Il confronto con la presidente del Consiglio potrebbe rappresentare un momento di chiarezza per le persone. Si vedranno in modo ancora più evidente due visioni agli antipodi dell’Italia e dell’Europa. Da una parte un approccio ipocrita di chi si riempie la bocca con prima gli italiani ma poi non fa nulla per risolvere i loro problemi, anzi li aggrava. Dall’altra chi come il Pd ha idee e proposte per aggredire le questioni che stanno a cuore alle persone, sanità, lavoro, scuola e vede nell’Europa più unita e federale la speranza per un mondo di pace e di cooperazione tra i popoli".

Nel suo tour in Emilia-Romagna, finito a Bologna con Bonaccini e il candidato alla presidenza della commissione Ue Nicolas Schmit, ha lanciato la sua proposta di legge sulla sanità pubblica e parlato di salario minimo. Non teme siano battaglie perse in partenza?

"Lo chieda a chi sta aspettando da un anno e mezzo di fare una gastroscopia o una mammografia, se sono battaglie perse. O a chi guadagna 4 euro l’ora. Solo se lo diranno loro, che sono battaglie perse, smetteremo di portarle avanti. Ma li incontriamo spesso in questo giro per l’Italia e ci chiedono di andare avanti".

La sua candidatura alle Europee è stata criticata. Da Romano Prodi, in primis...

"Mi sono messa a disposizione del partito per dare una mano, sapendo che più crescerà il consenso al Pd e più potremo portare in Europa una delegazione di persone serie, autorevoli, competenti, delle quali ora più che mai c’è un gran bisogno. Con Prodi eravamo insieme (ieri, ndr ) al campo di concentramento di Fossoli (Carpi). Come ho già detto, Prodi lo ascolto sempre. Non siamo sempre d’accordo, ma è meglio essere franchi".

Il campo largo con il M5s è un continuo tira e molla. Giuseppe Conte sta esagerando?

"Il dialogo con le altre forze di opposizione va costruito sui temi concreti. Quando ci riusciamo siamo più forti, com’è successo con il salario minimo. Noi ostinatamente lavoriamo per costruire l’alternativa di governo Meloni e non polemizziamo, quindi, con le altre forze di opposizione. Spero che anche gli altri sentano questa urgenza...".

Dal referendum sul Jobs Act al pacifismo di alcuni candidati Pd, da Marco Tarquinio a Cecilia Strada. Come crede di tenere a bada correnti e posizioni tanto differenti?

"Siamo un grande partito ed è naturale che ci siano sensibilità diverse. Non c’è nessuno da tenere a bada, ma occorre fare sintesi fra le diverse anime: è il mio compito. Il Pd è unitissimo nel sostenere il salario minimo al punto da far convergere le opposizioni sulle nostre proposte, perché pensiamo che meno di 9 euro l’ora sia sfruttamento. Ed è per questo che, di fronte all’indifferenza delle destre e del governo, abbiamo lanciato la raccolta firme per una legge popolare da portare in Parlamento".

Il vento socialista si conferma in Spagna e Germania. Sono questi i modelli da seguire?

"Sono molto contenta per il risultato ottenuto dal Partito socialista di Sanchez in Catalogna. Un bel segnale anche in vista delle Europee. Noi siamo impegnati con tutti i nostri candidati nell’incontro quotidiano con le persone a differenza di chi rimane chiusa nel palazzo perdendo il senso della realtà".
