Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.

Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.

The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Types of Aid

Many Ways to Support Your Education

Your financial aid package is made up of a combination of scholarship (grant) funds, student employment, and any potential outside awards. Loans are never required, but are available to interested families.

We will work with your family one-on-one to help you navigate options and make sure Harvard is an affordable option for your undergraduate education.

Scholarships & Grants

When you qualify for financial aid from Harvard, we use a combination of resources to create an individualized aid package to meet your demonstrated need. This may include scholarship funds and student employment, as well as any awards you’ve earned from outside sources. Parent and student loans are also available for interested families.

Because Harvard is committed to affordability, our scholarships are designed to cover 100% of your demonstrated financial need. Here is our process:

  • First we determine your award by establishing your  parent contribution
  • Then we factor in student employment and any outside awards you’ve received
  • Your remaining need will be covered by scholarship funds which are grant-based and never need to be repaid

Scholarship funds come from a variety of sources, including Harvard endowment funds, gifts from alumni, general tuition revenues, and federal and state grants.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences Scholarship program includes more than 2,000 individual endowment and gift funds, established by generous alumni and donors, including a  transformational $150 million gift  from Ken Griffin ‘89. We report to many of these donors annually using the information students share with us over the summer.

Federal and state grants

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant or a Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG). Your eligibility is determined by the information you provide in your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Pell Grants and SEOG are awarded by the federal government and administered by our office, based on financial need. Within 10 days of filing your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report indicating your eligibility for a Pell Grant.

If you are a Massachusetts resident, you may also be eligible for a state Gilbert Grant, which is awarded on the basis of need. These awards do not affect your term-time work expectation.

Outside Awards

Scholarships and grants from outside harvard.

Like many of our students, you may receive scholarship funds from sources outside Harvard, such as secondary schools, civic organizations, your parental employers, corporations, the National Merit Scholarship Programs, and the ROTC.

Since the intent of these awards is that they be used for educational purposes, you must report them to Harvard and apply them toward your college expenses. We will consider your outside awards as a part of your overall financial aid funding.

Funds from outside awards are incorporated into your financial aid package in two steps:

  • First to replace the term-time job expectation.
  • If you have outside awards that exceed your term-time work expectation the remaining amount would replace an equal amount of Harvard scholarship.

Since outside awards are additional resources that reduce your financial need, they cannot be used to replace your parent contribution.

Report your outside awards through the  Outside Awards Reporting System found under the Financial Aid tab of your My.Harvard student portal. Find where to send checks and Verification of Enrollment forms  on our website .

How to find outside awards

Student Employment

All students, regardless of their financial aid status, may work during the academic year—and in fact, around two-thirds of our students do. If you receive financial aid from Harvard, you will likely be expected to contribute to your education through employment. Your expected term-time work expectation is based on your working a reasonable number of hours during the semester—often around 10 to 12 hours per week. All wages earned are paid directly to you, rather than appearing on your term bill, and can be used to help pay for your out-of-pocket personal expenses.

Whatever your situation, the  Student Employment Office  is available to help you find work at University institutions, including libraries, museums, and cafeterias.

Federal Work-Study Program

When you apply for aid, your financial aid package will indicate your eligibility for the Federal Work-Study Program (FWSP). The Federal Work-Study Program subsidizes the wages of eligible students, making them particularly attractive to employers. If you are eligible, you will be able to work in FWSP-designated jobs at the University (and sometimes off campus as well). FWSP funds are available for both term-time and summer employment. Browse the Student Employment Office jobs database for FWSP eligible jobs.

Student Loans

You are not expected to take out loans as part of your financial aid package. Our aid packages are designed to cover your financial need without additional borrowing. In fact, most of our students graduate debt-free. However, you may choose to pursue loans to help cover your student or family contribution. Students may request loans using our  Student Loan Request Form .

If you are interested in a loan, we will help you find one that works for you. You may also consider federal or private parent loans.

Parent Loans

Your family may choose to pursue loans to spread the cost of education over a number of years. You can take out loans to cover the entire cost of education, or just a portion of the cost, as a supplement to contributions from family income and assets.

We will help you navigate both federal and private loan options. While there are no income restrictions, you must pass standard tests of creditworthiness. All loans may be prepaid partially or in full with no penalty.

If you intend to borrow a parent loan, applications are typically available after June 1st and should be submitted by August 1st in order for loan credits to be available toward registration. Please apply for only one parent loan at a time

As a Harvard Griffin GSAS student, you may be required or encouraged to find outside funding for projects and research. Harvard Griffin GSAS provides resources for graduate students seeking short- or long-term funding support for research, language study, graduate school generally, and dissertation writing.

Plan Ahead

Deadlines for fellowship competitions are usually in the academic year before the fellowship period. For example, if you’re looking for funding for the fall or spring, you will apply for fellowships the previous fall.

Finding Fellowships

The Fellowships & Writing Center provides guidance to students interested in applying for certain internal and external fellowship competitions. Harvard Griffin GSAS also maintains the  CARAT database , which contains information about additional fellowship opportunities and should be your first stop. CARAT allows you to search for fellowship opportunities by keyword, citizenship requirement, length of opportunity, stage in graduate school, and more. Through CARAT, you can find links to application materials for many internal fellowships, including those listed on the Harvard Griffin GSAS website, and instructions on how to apply. You can also search external databases for opportunities:

  • The University of Illinois Fellowship Finder
  • The UCLA Search for Graduate and Postdoc Funding
  • The University of Chicago Fellowships Database
  • Online Guide to Scholarships & Resources for LGBTQIA+ College Students

Getting Help

In an individual consultation on your fellowship proposal, you will receive feedback and advice on how to articulate the significance of your fellowship project. If you would like a critique of your fellowship essay, please complete the  FWC intake form  and one of our writing specialists will read and return your essay with an offer to schedule an appointment with you to discuss the feedback.

If you have a question about fellowships, please  sign up for an advising appointment  with Dr. Jeannette Miller.

How do I apply for a fellowship?

Every fellowship has specific criteria and application instructions, but as a general rule, most competitions ask for:

  • A fellowship proposal, explaining your research topic and what you plan to do if you are granted the fellowship
  • Recommendation letters
  • A budget of expenses you expect to incur, especially for fellowships requiring travel
  • Transcripts
  • A current CV, which includes a list of awards and fellowships you have won during your time as a graduate student, presentations, publications, and other relevant information.

Plan your application well in advance by seeking out recommenders early, making sure you obtain official transcripts well ahead of deadlines, and drafting your proposal early to get as much feedback on it as possible.

Notes From a Writer's Desk: From Text to Text

The Fellowships & Writing Center (FWC) recently held two talks as part of our annual April Speaker Series: “The Translator as Reader and Writer”; and “Moving from the Dissertation to the Book.” [...] While these talks might seem to bear little similarity, a common theme emerged: the transformation of one form of text into another.

Notes From a Writer's Desk: Code for Writing

Being well-written is a merit as valid for coding as for writing. Conversely, some writing foibles prompt me to think, “A computer will not be able to understand this!” It occurred to me that coding principles and best practices can actually help to promote more lucid writing.

Welcome, g1 physics students 2019.

Academic Life in Cambridge and Boston Harvard University's physics students are welcomed into an environment which is internationally renowned for its faculty, resources, and research initiatives. Commensurate with the academic surroundings are the outstanding cultural and recreational options available in the historic cities of Cambridge and Boston, which have been thriving on the banks of the Charles River for more than 350 years.

Students can relax on the grass of the Cambridge Common, where George Washington took command of the Continental Army, or stroll the narrow streets around Harvard Square, where bookstores, restaurants and shops buzz with activity while street musicians and performers entertain those passing by.

On the other side of the Charles, the Boston Freedom Trail takes walkers through early American history, winding its way around landmarks from the days of the American Revolution, such as the Old South Meeting House in which the Boston Tea Party was planned, the Old State House where the Declaration of Independence was first read in public, and the "Cradle of Liberty", Faneuil Hall.

Cultural and entertainment opportunities are bountiful around Cambridge and Boston, from world-class orchestras, theaters, museums, and festivals, to professional sports of every stripe, to an endless variety of popular entertainment venues, superb dining, clubs, galleries, lectures, and screenings of rare films.

The natural environment of the Atlantic coast offers unlimited choices for recreation and relaxation. To the south are the magnificent beaches of Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard, and to the north sprawl the mountains of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, popular with hikers and skiers. Picturesque towns like Marblehead and Kennebunkport hug the rugged seacoast and provide excellent destinations for weekend getaways. Greater Boston is home to at least six major research universities. Harvard students can benefit in many ways from the area's rich academic atmosphere by taking part in the many seminars, colloquia, and inter-university collaborations that happen on a regular basis throughout the year. Harvard students may also cross-register for classes at MIT, which is 20 minutes away from Harvard by bus or subway.

Foundation Created by Joseph Madri, MD/PhD, Professor Emeritus of Pathology, Supports Many Causes

Annual madri lecture held june 20.

Joseph Madri, MD/PhD, Professor Emeritus of Pathology, right, and Chen Liu, MD, PhD, Chair of Yale Pathology, center, present a plaque to Daniel A. Haber, MD, PhD, Director, Mass General Cancer Center, Kurt J. Isselbacher Professor of Oncology, Harvard Medical School, after Dr. Haber delivered the Madri Lecture.

Joseph & Lucille Madri

Joseph Madri, MD/PhD, Professor of Emeritus of Pathology, and his wife, Lucille, support many worthwhile causes with their foundation, including a Professorship in Pathology at Yale.

It wasn’t long after he helped launch Alexion Pharmaceuticals in the early 1990s when Joseph A. Madri, MD, PhD, professor emeritus of pathology, recalls one of Alexion’s co-founders, Leonard Bell (MD, ’84), talking to him about the company’s value.

“Lenny said to me, ‘You know Joe, one day this stock will be worth $1 or $2 and we can go out to dinner,’ ” Dr. Madri said. “It was worth a little more than that.”

The stock that Dr. Madri acquired as an Alexion founder and board member is benefitting a number of causes that matter to both him and his wife, Lucille, through the Joseph and Lucille Madri Family Foundation, including the annual Joseph A. & Lucille K. Madri Lecture in Pathology at Yale, held June 20, and the Joseph A. and Lucille K. Madri Professorship in Pathology.

“My goal for funding this lecture was to essentially enrich the department, especially the graduate students and the postdocs to let them see what superior investigators are like, and also as a resource to fund graduate students going to conferences. So it’ s for the betterment of the graduate students, which benefits the whole department,” Dr. Madri said.

The 2024 lecture featured Daniel A. Haber, MD, PhD, director, Mass General Cancer Center, Kurt J. Isselbacher Professor of Oncology, Harvard Medical School, and Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Haber’s topic in a packed Brady Auditorium was, “Single Cell Analysis of Circulating Tumor Cells.”

The Madri Foundation also supports at-risk youth in New Haven, Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services of New Haven, CT Foodshare, the Fair Haven Clinic, Planned Parenthood, Doctors Without Borders, a preschool in Boston, where his son lives, and an organization that provides a social net for the needy in Columbus, Ohio, where his daughter lives. It also provides scholarships to Medical Science Training Program students at Indiana University, where he earned his graduate and medical degrees.

“I was one of the founders of Alexion Pharmaceuticals and after almost two decades as an independent director and co-founder, Alexion’s success enabled us to fund our foundation.”

Dr. Madri’s introduction into the world of medicine came by way of the medical equipment and furniture company his father and uncles, Italian immigrants, founded in New York City.

“Madri Brothers Inc., manufactured medical equipment, instruments and furniture. Madri Brothers held contracts with several city hospitals and my experience working at Madri Brothers enabled me to appreciate the workings of various hospitals,” he said. “That experience was instrumental in helping me decide on a medical career. I was interested in how things worked mechanically but also biologically.”

After his graduate education at IU, Dr. Madri came to Yale and remained. Its proximity to New York City, where he and his wife have family, helped.

“Over the years, I was recruited by several places, but I always felt that Yale was better. I was fortunate to interact with outstanding students, postdocs, and faculty, all of whom made me a better person and clinician/scientist. The students and postdocs that I have mentored over four decades at Yale have attained positions in academia, medical practice, business, and law.”

Dr. Madri said getting used to retirement was an adjustment at first, but he is enjoying reading world and medical/science history, something he didn’t have time for while working and running the foundation, which their children will do one day.

“The children will continue the work of the foundation. They’ll continue to help people in need, and that’s important.”
