🤷 Thesis Rephraser: Why Using It?

  • To rephrase a conclusion or any other section of a paper (yes, it is SO universal);
  • To improve a thesis statement that does not wholly meet the requirements;
  • To reformulate a thesis statement so that you can include it in your conclusion;
  • To reword a thesis statement to see if it makes sense.

🎓 What Is a Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement is usually a sentence (or two as a maximum) at the beginning of your paper.

The picture contains a definition of a phrase in academic writing.

Most often, you should place it at the close of the introduction , presenting your argument to the reader.

✅ It explains how you plan to use the significance of the research question.
✅ It is an advance advertisement of what your paper will be about.
✅ If the topic of your essay is formulated as a question, the thesis statement explicitly answers it.
✅ It is your interpretation of the paper’s subject (see the disambiguation below).
✅ It makes an arguable statement (often but not necessarily).
✅ Everything you will write after it will argue that your thesis statement is correct.

Warning: Don’t mix the thesis statement and the subject of your paper. For example, the subject can be “the late works of Siegmund Freud,” but the thesis explains what you plan to do with this literature. I.e., “This essay argues that the late works of Siegmund Freud focus on mysticism.”

How to Identify a Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement is placed at the end of the introductory paragraph and answers the question of the paper’s topic. As a rule, it consists of only one sentence, which describes the essence of your writing.

What Is the Main Goal of a Thesis Statement?

The main goal is to give the reader a clear idea of the author’s position and how it will be defended. The best way to know what the paper is about is to read this sentence.

How Long Does a Thesis Statement Have to Be?

A thesis statement is usually formulated in a single sentence. Still, two shorter will also do if the sentence you have written is too complex or wordy.

📝 Thesis Statement Types (with Examples)

Below you'll find formulas and examples for 4 thesis statements: argumentative, analytical, expository, and literary analysis.

Argumentative Thesis Statement

An argumentative thesis statement presents the topic of a paper, the author’s opinion on the issue, and the reasons for such an opinion.

Argumentative thesis = Topic + Opinion + Reasons

E.g., Pembroke Welsh Corgis (topic) make perfect pets (opinion) because they are smart, active, and loyal (reasons) .

Analytical Thesis Statement

An analytical thesis statement presents the analyzed subject of your paper, reminds the reader of the general topic, and indicates what was found at the end of the analysis.

Analytical thesis = Subject of Analysis + Topic + Findings

E.g., The behavioral analysis (subject of analysis) of Pembroke Welsh Corgis (topic) demonstrates that they require more human attention than other breeds (findings) .

Expository Thesis Statement

An expository thesis statement specifies the overall topic and enumerates the principal aspects raised in the paper.

Expository thesis = Topic + Aspects

E.g., The criteria of corgi’s physical health (topic) comprise the state of their skin, fur, nose, eyes, teeth, and gums (aspects) .

Literary Analysis Thesis Statement

A literary analysis thesis statement focuses on the literary devices your paper will analyze and the results the author achieved through them.

Literary analysis = Literary Device + Effect

E.g., Arthur Conan Doyle uses the imagery of the moor (literary device) to produce an uncanny and grim impression on the reader (effect) .

✍️ How to Rewrite a Thesis?

Did your professor cross out your draft thesis statement and leave a negative comment in the right margin? Or have you already wracked your brain improvising a new version of the same thesis statement to put it into your conclusion?

Whichever the case, we will analyze why this introductory sentence is not good enough. Then you will get a how-to instruction for its correction.

Rewriting an Argumentative Thesis

Your thesis statement should be solid and convincing . It should also be based on facts and logical reasoning.

Compare the following versions of the same thesis. As you may guess, the second has been improved. The worst drawback of an argumentative thesis statement is when you fail to provide the reasons for your opinion.

❌ A bad example ✅ A better example

Rewriting an Analytical Thesis

An analytical thesis statement should indicate the specific aspect you plan to focus on, what kind of analysis you have done, and its results .

If any of the elements is missing, it is a weak thesis.

The example in the left column provides no information on how you achieved the given conclusion. The variant in the right column is much better.

Rewriting an Expository Thesis

An expository thesis statement does not convince the reader. Instead, it presents the narrow topic and its features. Do your best to make it informative and concise.

The thesis statement sample in the left column states a fact, but there is no information on what the paper’s main body will dwell upon. Consider the improvement in the right column:

Rewriting a Literary Analysis Thesis

A literary analysis thesis statement links the individual techniques of the author with the effect they have produced in the book. If no such link is established, you’ve failed the task.

The statement in the left column does not mention the literary device. Let us correct it.

❓ Thesis Rephraser FAQ

How does a thesis rephraser work.

A thesis rephraser allows you to produce an absolutely new thesis statement in a blink of an eye. Copy the last sentence of your introduction into the paraphrasing tool, select the volume of changed words, and press the button to get the result.

How to Rephrase a Thesis Statement?

The only correct way is to analyze its structure first. Then reword each constituent part separately and combine them in a new grammatically correct sentence. Don’t forget to check the result with anti-plagiarism software. If it shows that the sentence is not unique, change some words for their synonyms.

How to Rephrase a Question into a Thesis Statement?

Any thesis statement answers the research question or the question raised in the paper’s topic. That’s why you should not literally rephrase it. Instead, give a straightforward answer, which all your argumentation and evidence will support. But if the question is long, you can change its structure from interrogative to affirmative and replace several words with synonyms.

Where Do You Rephrase Your Thesis Statement in an Essay?

There are several places in an essay where you could include a reference to your thesis statement. These are the topic and concluding sentences of each paragraph. But the full paraphrased version of the thesis statement is necessary only in your conclusion.

📍 Why Make a Thesis Statement?

You might have already heard about theses and thesis statements. Well, the main difference is: a thesis is the key point or argument of your assignment. And the thesis statement is this point expressed in one sentence.

Here’s one crucial thing you should always keep in mind when you write this sentence: it should meet the professor’s requirements.

There are two types of thesis statements:

  • Direct. It states the exact reasons for your paper. For example, "I do not support vegan lifestyle because animals do not have feelings, this lifestyle is too expensive, and a vegan diet is not healthy." Such a thesis sentence would tell the reader what each body paragraph or section is going to be about.
  • Indirect. Unlike the direct thesis statement, it does not state clear arguments. Here’s the sample: "I do not support vegan lifestyle for three reasons." The fact “I do not support vegan lifestyle” is the topic, and "three reasons" represent an indirect thesis statement. The assignment will contain these three reasons.

Most kinds of academic papers require a thesis statement, which can also be considered as your answer to the research question.

Now that you've learned the basics let's see what can help you to create an excellent thesis statement for anything: from history research to a critique paper!

📝 Essay Thesis Statement

You will probably write many essays as a high school or college student. Writing an essay is quite easy: it doesn't require any serious research on your part, and the resulting text is usually short. That's why you choose a narrow thesis statement that you can talk about in 4-5 paragraphs.

Your choice of a thesis statement depends on what type of essay you're writing. Here are some examples:

In an expository essay , you explain the topic logically, using your analytical skills. This type of essay relies only on facts, without any reference to the writer's personal opinion. The topic statement is the most critical part of an expository essay. It should be short and manageable so that you can describe it in just a few paragraphs. As you can see from the definition, it also should be based on facts and not on the writer's position. This category includes compare and contrast essays, definition essays , and others:

e.g., While online education is not always taken seriously, it is beneficial because of its flexibility and affordability.

On the contrary, argumentative essays are centered on the writer's personal opinion. This type of essay is also called persuasive because your aim is to persuade people that your idea is right. The thesis statement should reflect this:

e.g., Vegan lifestyle should not be promoted because it's expensive and not healthy.

Note: it's better not to use the word "I," because it may appear as too subjective. Remember: a strong thesis statement means an excellent essay!

✍️ Research Paper Thesis Statement

Unlike essays, research papers require more information, and they are lengthier than essays. That's why a research paper thesis statement should be slightly broader. This way, you make sure that you have a lot to discuss and can demonstrate your more profound knowledge on the topic.

Research paper thesis statements can be simple or more complex, depending on the purpose of your paper. Simple thesis statements can be formulated with the help of the outlines:

Something is true because of these reasons .

The US Constitution is not outdated because it's an integral part of the country's identity.

Despite these counterarguments , something is true.

e.g., Despite not being outdated, the US Constitution needs many amendments to keep up with the changing times.

You can make more complex thesis statements by combining several arguments:

e.g., The US Constitution is not outdated, because it's a part of the country's identity; still, some amendments need to be made.

Remember: it is essential to stay on topic! Avoid including unnecessary and random words into your statement. Our online thesis creator can help you in writing a statement directly connected with your theme.

Our thesis statement generator can help writing a thesis for your research. Create a short, catchy thesis statement, and you are one step closer to completing a perfect research paper!

📜 Dissertation Thesis Statement

Writing a master's thesis or a Ph.D. dissertation is not the same as writing a simple research paper. These types of academic papers are very lengthy. They require extensive analysis of information, as well as your ideas and original research.

Besides, you only have limited time for writing a dissertation, so you'll have to work on it systematically.

That's why it's better to come up with a thesis statement as early as possible . It will help you always stay on topic and not to waste your time on irrelevant information.

A dissertation can have an even broader thesis statement because of how lengthy your work should be. Make sure it's something you can study extensively and from different points of view:

e.g., The use of memory techniques at school can boost children's abilities and revolutionize modern teaching.

Don't forget to include a statement showing why your dissertation is interesting and relevant!

🙊 Thesis Statement For a Speech

Similarly, the thesis statement for a speech should be catchy and exciting . If you include it in the introduction, you will provide your audience with a sense of direction and make it easier to concentrate. The audience will know what to expect of your speech, and they will pay more attention.

Speech, unlike a research paper, includes only the most relevant information . If your speech is based on a paper, use your thesis statement to decide what to leave out. Remember that everything you say should be connected to your thesis statement! This way, you'll make your speech consistent, informative, and engaging.

Another useful tip is to rehearse your speech several times before deciding that it's finished. You may need to make some corrections or even rephrase the thesis statement. Take your time and make sure you do your best!

Now, we will concentrate on your thesis writing. We’ve prepared six tips that would help you to master your thesis statement regardless of the paper type you were assigned to:

  • Formulate your topic. Here’s the secret: the good topic makes half of the success when you write a paper. It defines your research area, the degree of your involvement, and, accordingly, how good will the result be at the end. So what is the topic of an essay? Basically, it’s a phrase that defines the subject of your assignment. Don’t make it too broad or too specific.
  • Determine the key idea. It will help you get an understanding of your essay subject. Think about things you are trying to state or prove. For example, you may write down one main idea; consider a specific point of view that you’re going to research; state some facts and reasons you will use in your assignment, or express your opinion about the issue.
  • Choose the central argument to support your thesis. Make a list of arguments you would use in your essay. This simple task has at least two benefits. First, you will get a clear understanding on what you’re going to write. It will wipe out the writer’s block. Second, gathering arguments for the topic will help you create an outline for your assignment.
  • Generate other arguments to support the thesis. Free thesis generators suggest you proceed with a few arguments that support your topic idea. Don’t forget to prepare some logical evidence!
  • Come up with a counterargument to the main idea. You might find this exercise a bit hard, but still, if you're dreaming of writing an excellent paper, think of another side of the argument. To complete this task, you should conduct preliminary research to find another standpoint and evidence behind it.
  • Provide your thesis statement as early as possible in your paper. If you're writing a short paper, put your thesis in the introductory paragraph. For more extended essays, it is acceptable to write it in the second paragraph. And avoid phrases like, "The point of my essay is…"
  • Make your thesis statement specific. Remember to keep it short, clear, and specific. Check if there are two broad statements. If so, think about settling on one single idea and then proceed with further development. Avoid making it too broad. Your paper won’t be successful if you write three pages on things that do not disclose the topic and are too generic.

Original thesis:

There are serious objections to abortions.

Revised thesis:

Because of the high risk of breast cancer or subsequent childbearing, there should be broadly implemented the informed consent practice that certifies that women are advised of such risks prior to having an abortion.

When writing your thesis, you use words that your audience will understand:

  • Avoid technical language unless you’re writing a technical report.
  • Forget about jargon.
  • Avoid vague words: “exciting,” “interesting,” “usual,” “difficult,” etc.
  • Avoid simply announcing the topic. Share your specific “angle” and show why your point on the issue matter.
  • Do not make judgments that oversimplify complex topics.
  • If you use judgment call in your thesis, don’t forget to specify and justify your reasoning.
  • Don't just report facts. Instead, share your personal thoughts and ideas on the issue.
  • Explain why your point matters. When you’re writing a thesis, imagine that your readers ask you a simple question: “So what?” Instead of writing something general, like "There are a lot of pros and cons of behaviorism", tell your readers why you think the behaviorism theory is better than cognitivist theory.
  • Avoid quotes in your thesis statement. Instead of citing someone, use your own words in the thesis. It will help you to grab the reader's attention and gain credibility. And the last advice: change your thesis as you write the essay. Revise it as your paper develops to get the perfect statement. Now it's time to apply this knowledge and create your own thesis! We believe this advice and tools will be useful in your essay writing!

Ref-n-Write: Scientific Research Paper Writing Software

Ref-n-write’s paraphrasing tool has a powerful AI (Artificial Intelligence) module that is specifically designed for academic writing. It is very important to avoid plagiarism when it comes to academic writing. You can no longer use your own text after it is published, it should be paraphrased manually or with a good rephrase tool, otherwise it will be considered self-plagiarism . Ref-n-write has been ranked as one of the best paraphrasing tools available out there. Ref-n-write’s legacy phrase templates feature offers the ability to rephrase sentences individually, while the newly added paraphrasing tool allows the users to rephrase paragraphs with one click. This makes Ref-n-write one of the best research tools available for students and academics. Click here to see the video of paraphrasing tool in action rephrasing a paragraph.

What is a Paraphrasing Tool?

A paraphrasing tool is used to rewrite or rephrase a sentence without altering its meaning. This is accomplished by substituting any number of alternate versions for specific words, phrases, sentences, or even whole paragraphs to create a slightly different variant.

How do you use the Ref-n-Write’s Paraphrasing Tool in Word?

You have to select a passage and click the ‘Paraphrase’ button in the Ref-n-write’s button panel. Ref-n-Write will rewrite the text and display the results in the panels below. Following figure demonstrates Ref-n-Write’s paraphrasing tool in action.

Screenshot of paraphrasing tool

Can Ref-n-write’s Paraphrasing Tool correct grammatical errors in the text?

The Ref-n-Write’s paraphrasing tool functions as a grammar checker. In addition to rephrasing and rewording the text the tool can detect and correct grammatical errors. You don't have to spend extra money on a separate grammar check as these tools can be quite expensive and you have to sign up for an annual subscription.

Paraphrasing Tool correcting Grammatical errors

How do you Rephrase a Sentence?

Rephrasing a sentence follows the same process as paraphrasing, but the most important consideration is to make the sentence clearer. Rephrasing may or may not be coupled with rewording or synonym adjustments. It may only entail rearranging the original sentence as long as clarity is obtained.

Can Ref-n-write Rephrase a Sentence?

Perfectly! It is an all-in-one tool that will assist you with every aspect of academic writing. Ref-n-write makes it very easy to rephrase, reword, rewrite, paraphrase, cite and avoid plagiarism.

Is it Okay to use a Paraphrasing tool?

Yes, it is okay to use a paraphrasing tool. However, there has been much debate about whether or not using a paraphrasing tool is a good practice. Some may argue that it prevents authors and students from improving their ability to express themselves in their own words. As with any invention, these paraphrasing tools can be misused. But that doesn’t mean using them is bad. These tools provide suggestions and ideas to help the user paraphrase, but the final product is still up to the user. Only when authors, students, or users see these paraphrasing tools as a direct substitute for citation does it become a bad practice.

How do you Paraphrase Correctly?

  • • Read the text to get an understanding of its message and flow.
  • • Identify and highlight keywords that must not be changed to retain the text’s meaning.
  • • Identify words that can be rearranged or moved without changing the meaning or flow of the text.
  • • Identify words and phrases that can be changed and replace them with appropriate synonyms.
  • • Double-check that you included all of the vital information in the original text.

How do you Professionally Paraphrase?

You Paraphrase professionally by following our guidelines on paraphrasing correctly and appropriately citing and referencing the source materials. A paraphrasing tool (ideally Ref-n-write) will make the process quicker and faster, increase the overall quality of your work, and provide you with a greater variety of ideas to work with.

How do you Rephrase a Paragraph?

  • • Paraphrasing each sentence that makes up the paragraph.
  • • Ensuring there is an adequate flow from sentence to sentence
  • • Ensuring every sentence is clear
  • • Ensuring the meaning of each sentence and the overall message of the whole paragraph is not altered

How can I make a Sentence Better?

It is essential that a good sentence be clear, concise, appropriately punctuated, free of grammar errors, and have a proper flow. All of the elements stated above must be improved for a sentence to be better. Effective paraphrasing may help you improve a sentence, and employing the right paraphrasing tools can help you improve a sentence even more.

Can you use the Ref-n-Write’s Paraphrasing Tool Offline?

Most of the existing rephrase tools requires access to the internet. On the contrary, the Ref-n-write’s paraphrasing tool can be operated in both online and offline modes. Following images show the rephrased output of the paraphrasing tool when operating in online and offline modes. If you look at the rephrased paragraph, you will notice that the rephrased sentences are colour coded in offline mode indicating the confidence of each word replacement - green means very confident; blue means moderately confident and red means not very confident. There is no colour coding in the online mode, however the quality of rephrasing is much better in the online paraphrasing mode compared to the offline mode. It is highly recommended to use the paraphrasing tool in online mode since this is much more powerful than the offline mode.

How do you Paraphrase a file with Ref-n-Write?

Ref-n-Write allows users to paraphrase their file one passage at a time. This enables the author to learn and understand the paraphrasing process and do it without outside help in the future. Since Ref-n-write is a Microsoft Word add-in, paraphrasing can be applied directly to the document without losing the formatting.

What is the best free online paraphrasing tool?

There is no such thing as the best online paraphrasing tool. An excellent online paraphrasing tool should provide final paraphrased results that adhere to the steps recommended in our guideline to correctly paraphrasing. Ref-n-write provides a 15-day free trial period in which you can test the paraphrasing feature before charging a one-time fee.

Can I get the paraphrasing tool for free?

As the saying goes, “the great ones don’t come cheap.” Ref-n-write is the best academic paraphrasing tool available. It is a Microsoft Word add-in that is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. If you are a scholar, student, researcher, author, or you have a job that requires a lot of writing, Ref-n-write is the best for you. Ref-n-write provides a 15-day free trial period before charging a one-time fee of around £29.99 for the full version. That is significantly less expensive than any other paraphrasing tool that charges a monthly fee. It aids in citation and allows you to import your source materials and conduct a full-text search to avoid plagiarism. Ref-n-write is the most affordable all-in-one paraphrasing tool available.

What is the difference between free and paid Paraphrasing tool?

Paraphrasing with a free or paid tool follows the same steps as mentioned above for correctly paraphrasing. However, when compared to the paid version of Ref-n-write, using a free tool has some limitations on the word count of the text being paraphrased.

Is Ref-n-write Paraphrasing Tool Safe?

Ref-n-write’s paraphrasing tools are secure and dependable. They take the security and privacy of their members seriously, and they operate in line with all relevant privacy and data protection legislation.

Is using Paraphrasing Tool Cheating?

Paraphrasing, on the other hand, is not plagiarism if adequately cited and referenced. Hence, utilising paraphrasing tools with correct citation and reference is not considered cheating.

Is Paraphrasing Tool Legit?

The utilisation of paraphrase tools determines their legitimacy. When used correctly, they are legal; nevertheless, when misused, they constitute plagiarism, which is illegal. True, these paraphrase tools make work easier and faster, especially when one is on a tight deadline, but they must be utilised correctly.

Can Turnitin Detect Paraphrasing Tool?

An excellent way to avoid plagiarism scanners is by paraphrasing. Turnitin’s algorithms do not detect paraphrasing. They are primarily concerned with recognising similar language structures, grammatical patterns, and phrases. This paraphrasing tool will not be flagged as plagiarised as long as it generates unique content that exhibits little or no similarity to anything in the Turnitin database.

Is Paraphrasing Tool Plagiarism?

As previously stated, combining paraphrasing tools with proper citation and referencing is a good practice. Yes, some of these paraphrasing tools can produce 100% unique content, but the source material should be acknowledged. As a result, if proper citation is not used, a paraphrasing tool can constitute plagiarism.

Is there a Website that can Paraphrase Sentences for you?

You can try the Ref-n-write paraphrasing tool on the website, however it is recommended to install the plugin on your Microsoft Word as it offers more options and is easy to use. If you conduct a Google search, you will be presented with an unending list of websites to consider. Many of these websites reword sentences; they do not adequately rewrite them.

What is the Best Paid Paraphrasing tool?

We are possibly the best paid paraphrasing tool available. Ref-n-write does more than just paraphrase; it also assists with citation and referencing and allows you to import all of your source materials and perform a full-text search to check for similarity and text overlap. Our academic phrase bank provides you with a variety of phrases related to your topic of interest from which to choose. Ref-n-write helps you enhance your writing to suit today’s standards. Oh, and did I forget to mention that it is very affordable compared to other paid tools? We give you good value for your money.

How do you Use the Paraphrasing Tool in Word?

Microsoft Word’s Web version now includes rewrite suggestions, but it is very basic. However, this is a new function and has not yet been implemented on the PC or mobile versions. There are various paraphrasing tools available as Microsoft Word add-ins on PC, including Ref-n-write and many others. These add-ins will assist you in rewording your texts in a variety of ways.

Thesis Statements

What this handout is about.

This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft.

Introduction

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement:

  • tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
  • is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
  • directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
  • makes a claim that others might dispute.
  • is usually a single sentence near the beginning of your paper (most often, at the end of the first paragraph) that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively. (Check out our handout on understanding assignments for more information.)

How do I create a thesis?

A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis” that presents a basic or main idea and an argument that you think you can support with evidence. Both the argument and your thesis are likely to need adjustment along the way.

Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming .

How do I know if my thesis is strong?

If there’s time, run it by your instructor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback. Even if you do not have time to get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following :

  • Do I answer the question? Re-reading the question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the focus of the question. If the prompt isn’t phrased as a question, try to rephrase it. For example, “Discuss the effect of X on Y” can be rephrased as “What is the effect of X on Y?”
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an argument.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is likely to  be “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.
  • Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. It’s okay to change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Suppose you are taking a course on contemporary communication, and the instructor hands out the following essay assignment: “Discuss the impact of social media on public awareness.” Looking back at your notes, you might start with this working thesis:

Social media impacts public awareness in both positive and negative ways.

You can use the questions above to help you revise this general statement into a stronger thesis.

  • Do I answer the question? You can analyze this if you rephrase “discuss the impact” as “what is the impact?” This way, you can see that you’ve answered the question only very generally with the vague “positive and negative ways.”
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not likely. Only people who maintain that social media has a solely positive or solely negative impact could disagree.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? No. What are the positive effects? What are the negative effects?
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? No. Why are they positive? How are they positive? What are their causes? Why are they negative? How are they negative? What are their causes?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? No. Why should anyone care about the positive and/or negative impact of social media?

After thinking about your answers to these questions, you decide to focus on the one impact you feel strongly about and have strong evidence for:

Because not every voice on social media is reliable, people have become much more critical consumers of information, and thus, more informed voters.

This version is a much stronger thesis! It answers the question, takes a specific position that others can challenge, and it gives a sense of why it matters.

Let’s try another. Suppose your literature professor hands out the following assignment in a class on the American novel: Write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn. “This will be easy,” you think. “I loved Huckleberry Finn!” You grab a pad of paper and write:

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.

You begin to analyze your thesis:

  • Do I answer the question? No. The prompt asks you to analyze some aspect of the novel. Your working thesis is a statement of general appreciation for the entire novel.

Think about aspects of the novel that are important to its structure or meaning—for example, the role of storytelling, the contrasting scenes between the shore and the river, or the relationships between adults and children. Now you write:

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore.
  • Do I answer the question? Yes!
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not really. This contrast is well-known and accepted.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? It’s getting there–you have highlighted an important aspect of the novel for investigation. However, it’s still not clear what your analysis will reveal.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? Not yet. Compare scenes from the book and see what you discover. Free write, make lists, jot down Huck’s actions and reactions and anything else that seems interesting.
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? What’s the point of this contrast? What does it signify?”

After examining the evidence and considering your own insights, you write:

Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.

This final thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Of course, for the essay itself to be successful, you must now present evidence from the novel that will convince the reader of your interpretation.

🔤 All You Need to Know about Thesis Statements

A thesis statement is a sentence in the introduction of your paper that contains the main idea you discuss and tells the readers what to expect from the writing. In other words, a thesis statement should be a road map for the readers, guiding them through different parts of your essay.

A thesis statement is vital for all types of papers, including:

  • Informative essays
  • Argumentative essays
  • Analytical essays
  • Comparative essays

A thesis also builds the foundation for research papers, case studies , and many other forms of academic writing.

The perfect thesis statement should be:

Short & sweet You should present your point of view unambiguously in 1-2 sentences.
Debatable Your thesis statement should explain your opinion to the readers, not just state a well-known fact.
Reasonable You need to support all the claims in your thesis statement with the help of arguments and evidence.

🆚️ Thematic Statement Vs. Thesis Statement

When you work on an essay, it is crucial to distinguish the theme and thesis.

A theme is the central idea of your writing. Your scholarly paper or literary piece may contain some minor themes, but they are usually united by the dominant one. A theme is usually an abstract idea you’re exploring in your essay. For example, your central theme would be greed themes or selfishness if you’re writing an essay on corruption.

To make your ideas in the essay more concrete, you need to support your theme with a thesis. As was mentioned before, a thesis statement sums up your entire writing to the key idea. However, within thematic essays, it is possible to say that thematic statements are interchangeable with thesis statements.

🙅 Thesis Statement Checker: Mistakes to Avoid

Generating a thematic statement can be challenging, and students often repeat the same mistakes. Here’s what you need to avoid if you want your writing to shine.

  • Don’t try to write a thematic statement from scratch. Take your time to read enough information on the topic so that you can polish your thoughts.
  • Avoid too general facts in your thematic statement. Remember that you need to catch readers’ attention, so it’s better to come up with something less obvious.
  • Don’t include any advice in your thematic statement. It should be more like an observation without telling readers what they should and shouldn’t do.
  • Don’t forget to use evidence and arguments that support your thematic statement. You must demonstrate that your thematic statement has some foundation from the beginning.
  • Avoid being too specific in your thematic statement. Keep your thematic statement universal so that every reader can understand the topic.
  • Don’t plagiarize . The thematic statement aims to illustrate your proficiency in the topic. Instead of copying others’ work, you can make your contribution to the discussion.

Thank you for reading this article! Note that you can use our hook creator if you need to create a catchy hook for your essay quickly.

Question to Sentence Converter: Best Free Online Tool – ChatGPT AI

ChatGPT

In general, there hasn’t been an online tool that can turn questions into statements, but lately, ChatGPT seems to have the capability to do that.

Let’s break down the process of converting questions into statements/sentences using ChatGPT and provide a practical demonstration.

Steps to convert questions into answer statements using ChatGPT:

  • Identify the Question : Before you can convert a question into a statement, you need to clearly identify what the question is. For instance, “What is the capital of France?”
  • Ask ChatGPT : Present the question to ChatGPT with a request to rephrase it as a statement. For example, “ChatGPT, can you turn the question ‘What is the capital of France?’ into a statement?”
  • Review the Response : ChatGPT will provide a response, which should be a statement form of the original question. For our example, ChatGPT might respond with “The capital of France is Paris.”

Practical Demonstration:

  • Original Question: “How old is the Earth?”
  • User to ChatGPT prompt : “ChatGPT, can you turn the question ‘How old is the Earth?’ into a statement?”
  • ChatGPT’s Response: “The Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old.”

This method can be applied to a wide range of questions. However, it’s worth noting that the accuracy and appropriateness of the statement will depend on the clarity and specificity of the original question.

Steps to convert questions into declarative sentences using ChatGPT:

If you want to convert a question into a statement without necessarily answering it, you’d be looking to rephrase the question into a declarative form. Here’s how you can do that with ChatGPT :

  • Present Your Question : Type out or state the question you want to convert.
  • Request Conversion : Ask ChatGPT explicitly to rephrase your question into a declarative sentence without answering it.
  • Review the Response : ChatGPT will provide a response that rephrases the question as a statement.
  • User: prompt: “ChatGPT, can you turn the question ‘What is the color of the sky?’ into a declarative sentence?”
  • ChatGPT: “You are asking about the color of the sky.” or

Here are other examples of turning questions into statement sentences:

  • Turn this question into statement: “Is she coming to the party?” ChatGPT Statement: “She is coming to the party.”

  • Prompt : Turn this question into sentence “Can he drive a car?” ChatGPT sentence : “He can drive a car.”

  • Question: “Does this dress fit me?” Statement: “This dress fits me.”
  • Question: “Have they been to Paris?” Statement: “They have been to Paris.”
  • Question: “Should I start the presentation?” Statement: “You should start the presentation.”

This way, the question is turned into a statement/sentence without directly answering it.

When questions can be turned into declarative sentences and when they can become answers

When converting a question into a sentence, the context and type of question play a role in determining whether an answer is required for the transformation. Here are some guidelines:

  • Question: “What is the capital of France?”
  • Statement: “The capital of France is Paris.”
  • Question: “Who doesn’t love a sunny day?”
  • Statement: “Everyone loves a sunny day.”
  • Question: “Did they win the game?”
  • Statement: “They won the game.” (implies “yes”)
  • Question: “How do you feel about the new policy?”
  • Statement: “You have feelings about the new policy.”
  • Question: “Do you want tea or coffee?”
  • Statement: “You have a choice between tea and coffee.”

In general, the ability to turn a question into a declarative sentence without providing an answer depends on the nature of the question and the context in which it’s asked.

Differences between question to a sentence, to a statement, and to an answer

  • Question: “Is it raining?”
  • Sentence: “It is raining.”
  • Question: “Do you like apples?”
  • Statement: “You like apples.”
  • Answer: “Paris.”

So, while “Question to Sentence” and “Question to Statement” are similar concepts, “Question to Answer” is about responding to the query.

Start by removing the question mark then arrange the phrase in the usual subject-verb-object sequence to make a question into a statement.

By placing the subject first, then the verb, both inquiries may be made into assertions,

So, apply the same rule, and seek the fundamental components of a sentence: the subject, verb, and object.

The fundamental premise is the same whether the remark is positive or negative

  • Start with the subject, “What are some benefits of yoga?”
  • Use phrases such as “some people” or “many people” to refer to a group.
  • End the sentence with a topic sentence.

“What are some benefits of yoga?” can be turned into a statement by stating “Some people find yoga to be beneficial.”

If you can’t explain something in a way that makes sense, change the question to an answer statement.

  • For example, if someone asks “How to lose weight?”, say: “I lost weight by eating less and exercising more.”
  • Alternatively, if someone asks “How to study?”, say: “I study by spending time before class to prepare.”

Creative ways to change question to statement

A statement is a brief and direct answer to a question. It contains facts, ideas and opinions but has no emotion or unnecessary details.

To turn a question into a statement, here are some tips:

  • Start your statement with a hook, such as ‘According to research…’ or ‘In my experience…’. This makes your sentence more interesting and catches the reader’s attention.
  • State the question in your own words first, then answer it using facts and examples from the research or your experience. This shows that you know what you are talking about.
  • Finish your statement by summing up the main points of the question, in your own words.

Even if you don’t enjoy doing it, having to think on your feet and answer questions quickly is a great way to test your ability to solve problems.

The same is true for writing essays, research papers, and even short answers for tests. If you’re asked to write an essay from a question instead of answering it directly, try turning the question into its own sentence or phrase so that it allows more space for explanation.

You can find out all you need to know about turning a question into a statement by looking the guidance further above.

What is a Question

A question is basically a word or a phrase that starts with a word or letter that you are trying to find out something about.

A question is a statement that asks for information. It can be asked in the form of a question word or phrase, such as “Why did she leave?” or “When does the movie start?”. It can also be asked in the form of an interrogative clause, such as “Who won the game?” or “What did you see in the movie?”. In either case, it is a statement that requests information.

What are the 4 types of questions?

These different types of questions will be further explained below. No matter what language you speak, questions are an important part of communication. In English, there are many different types of questions, each with a different purpose.

  • General or Yes/No Questions : These are the most common type of question in English.
  • Special or Wh-Questions : These are questions that begin with ‘who,’ ‘what,’ or ‘when.’
  • Choice Questions : These are questions that request a choice between two options.
  • Disjunctive or Tag Questions : These are questions that form with a conjunctive adverb.

What is a Sentence

A sentence is basically a complete thought that contains a subject, verb, and object. They are often referred to as clauses. A sentence is basically a combination of two or more clauses together to create a complete thought.

For example, “I am reading a book” is a complete sentence because it has a subject (“I”), a verb (“am”), and an object (“reading”). This is the basic definition of a sentence .

A sentence is also defined as “a group of words with a topic and a connection between the words and also called as a connective word or a conjunction”.

  • There are no two sentences that are exactly the same.
  • The main purpose of a sentence is to convey a meaning or an idea.
  • The words used in a sentence can be nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc.

What is a Question to Sentence

A question to sentence is basically a question that has been made into a sentence. This is very useful for those who are new to the subject they are studying and don’t know how to convert questions into sentences.

The best way to do this is by using a question, but changing the words to make it a sentence.

For example, if you want to convert a question about “why are you reading a book?” into a sentence, you can simply change it to “you are reading a book”,

Why using sentences instead of questions?

There are several reasons why you should convert your questions into sentences as opposed to just leaving it as a question.

– First , there are fewer mistakes when converting a question into a sentence than when converting a sentence into a question.

– Second , the major purpose of converting a question into a sentence is to help at the beginning of your responses since the ideal method to respond to a question is to restate it as a sentence before attempting to respond.

– Finally , converting a question into a sentence gives you more freedom to write the sentence in any way you want. This is because the question does not have any specific rules you need to follow when writing the sentence. In other words, you can write the sentence in any way you want so that it sounds right and is grammatically correct .

Why converting questions into sentences

Most professors want their students to be able to rephrase the question in their answers. It is crucial to ensure that students write entire sentences. The following are the reasons for restating questions:

  • Restating a question involves repeating it if it is brief, or rephrasing it if it is longer.
  • You should rephrase questions to guarantee perfect comprehension and to give yourself time to ponder before responding.
  • It also assists you in answering the exact question that has been posed.
