Today, L.A.-based darkwave artist Mareux unleashes the seductive music video for his viral cover of The Cure's much-loved 1987 track "The Perfect Girl" which has 2.3 billion views across TikTok.

Produced and directed by visionary filmmakers Muted Widows (Michael R. Zumaya, Nedda Afsari, and Michael E Linn), the clip perfectly captures the song's shadowy, '80s roots with RuPaul's Drag Race Season 7 winner Violet Chachki serving vintage vamp.

"The Perfect Girl" visual begins with Chachki entering an apartment full of leather daddies. She struts around the space as the leather-clad fellas perform household chores (watch TV, iron clothes, make spaghetti) around her. As she primps in the mirror, it soon becomes unclear whether the scene is real-or part of her imagination. The video ends up bringing diverse subcultures together to create something visually enthralling.

"Muted Widows were able to capture the song's vibe perfectly by casting a contemporary megastar like Violet and placing her against an unnerving mid-century backdrop, which parallels the dark yet dreamy and alluring nature of the song," says Mareux, real name Aryan Ashtiani. Mareux's "The Perfect Girl" has become a modern-day classic, reaching well over 70 million streams.

The brooding track first took off in Eastern Europe, where darkwave has a strong following, via social media and TikTok. To date, "The Perfect Girl" boasts 2.3 billion views across 530k TikTok "creates." It is also averaging 3.5M streams per week on Spotify - a result of its placement on over 50 Spotify Viral 100 charts and multiple editorial playlists. The Cure cover enjoyed another boost after soundtracking a pivotal Euphoria themed TikTok trend earlier this year.

"'The goal with 'The Perfect Girl,' and really all my music, was to produce something timeless," Mareux says. "Between the romantic lyrics of Robert Smith, the catchy melody, and the danceable tempo, I think I've made something that will hopefully resonate for decades to come." With a powerful visual backing it, the breakout artist is well on his way to achieving that goal.

Violet Chachki Stars as “The Perfect Girl” in the Video for Mareux’s Cover of The Cure

Covering a band as legendary as The Cure is no easy feat, but LA-based Darkwave artist, Mareux has been wildly successful with his version of the track from the band’s 1987 album Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me .

In wake of the song’s viral success with over 2.3 billion views across TikTok, Mareux teamed up with filmmakers Muted Widows Produced a (Michael R. Zumaya, Nedda Afsari, and Michael E Linn), who translated the atmospheric song’s atmosphere into a seductive music video starring RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 winner Violet Chachki.

The scene is set in “The Perfect Girl” with Chachki making her stylish entrance into an apartment full of leather daddies. The leather-clad men then proceed to perform chores and household activities around her.  Is this real, or just in her in head? Either way, Violet reflects how imagination can imbue the mundane with lush glamour and fantasy. And as she primps in the mirror, she knows she looks perfect.

Violet Chachki Is 'The Perfect Girl' in Mareux's New Visual

Violet Chachki is the ultimate vintage vamp in Mareux's "The Perfect Girl" music video, out today.

Stepping into the first shot in blue leather, The Cure’s 1987 song of the same name swells as Chachki's stilettos ascend a dimly lit staircase. She opens an eerie apartment with "The Perfect Girl" spelled out across its front door. Inside, leather-clad daddies lounge, cruise and work out on stationary bikes under green lighting. Unfazed by the surreal scene, Chachki struts through and sheds her jacket to reveal that iconic cinched silhouette.

Reminiscent of her days on RuPaul’s Drag Race , the Season 7 winner then lip-synchs and stares into her reflection, as we’ve seen her do countless times in Untucked . While "The Perfect Girl" unfolds, her performance refracts across mirrors throughout the apartment under rolling glimmers of light. The scene becomes increasingly strange and it's unclear whether this is reality or a dream made in Chachki's own image.

Behind the Scenes

The video was produced and directed by Muted Widows , a film and photography agency known for their otherworldly imaginations. "Muted Widows were able to capture the song’s vibe by casting a contemporary megastar like Violet and placing her against an unnerving mid-century backdrop," Mareux says, adding that it "parallels the dark yet dreamy and alluring nature of the song."

The electronic artist (real name: Aryan Ashtiani) reimagined The Cure’s original track, "The Perfect Girl," which took off in the Eastern Europe darkwave scene and has experienced a revival spurred by Mareux and the nostalgia-melting-pot of TikTok . The sound itself has garnered 2.3 billion views across half a million TikToks and even inspired a Euphoria -themed trend earlier this year.

“The goal with 'The Perfect Girl' and really all my music was to produce something timeless, between the romantic lyrics of [The Cure's] Robert Smith, the catchy melody and the danceable tempo," Mareux continues. "I think I’ve made something that will hopefully resonate for decades to come."

Strange doesn’t mean bad at all in that case: it could mean she’s got a strange sense of humor, or maybe she came to the party dressed as a penguin. He feels she’s from another world because they are very different: they come from different cities, she likes different music and all. Nonetheless, he can’t help but feel an attraction for this strange girl: he’s raving in his own world, comes out of the dancefloor and sees her standing. So then he walks towards her, comes very close to her face, sees this strange girl’s lips, and wants to kiss them. But he holds it. He’d like to shake her around and around, bring her to his universe. But she’s such a strange girl, she won’t let herself come into his world. Long after she goes, he keeps repeating to himself she’s such a strange girl, with this melody over and over. But actually maybe she was just a perfect girl.

This is a song about a person who finds a girl strange. The lyrics depict that he wants to do random things with her, such as shaking her up and down- symbolising that he wants to learn more about her. Everything she seems to do he doesn't understand, and he finds her strange. My own interpretation of his attraction in her because she's strange is that he's strange too, and maybe this girl could be someone just as strange as him. Another interpretation is that he's delusional and is stalking this girl that he's so fascinated with, falling in love with her- but I prefer the first one.

I love it. Idk if this is really an interpretation but I just really need to share this, even if it's about a girl it reminds me about my boyfriend a lot, it makes me feel so strange but I love feeling like this. I don't know what feeling it is but it's a mix of sad and happy, I'm happy I'm finally with him after almost two years, I'm happy I managed to get this lucky. But I'm sad because I can't understand why he loves me and I don't get why'd he'd be into someone like me. I hate myself for thinking he loves me, but I love myself for thinking he loves me. I have no idea. I wasn't sure if he'd actually like a trans dude like me at first but .. I did it. And I'm not sure how to feel about it, I don't have to keep chasing him and running inside of a loop anymore, all I need to do now is stay but it's hard. I love him a lot but it's so hard to tell if he loves me, even if he says "I love you" over text or a 'phone call' I still refuse to believe it. I don't know what's wrong with me, I want to break up with him because it feels like he wants to leave me but he's scared to do it because he knows how much I love him.

This "clean girl" aesthetic, but thats not the perfect girl since the perfect girl is also strange. Mareux's perfect girl is that one person we meet and slowly become totally infatuated with them. The perfect girl is mysterious and has poise. All you know is you need them more and more. obsessing over each and every detail wanting to know more.This obsession can come from jealousy or lustfullness. Neither of them are healthy. Does the "perfect girl"know this? we dont know. we get the obssesors pov. All we do know is that not only one person gets captivated by her. its a process that repeats itself in the song. There was a time where i would listen to this song non stop. When i woke up the music from my headphones was still playing and i only listened this song. During movies i would also listen to this song.Anything i did i listened to it. It truly was perfect. It enamoured my brain in a way i cant copprehend.I was a victim of this song myself. but how could i not be? Will i ever get the chance to be "the perfect girl"? Does she feel love? Does she feel confident? Does she care?

I like it. It really makes me think about life you know and it just really good instrumentals and it has a deep meaning.

People...this is a cover song from the Cure in 1987 and if you ever read anything at all or watched any interviews, you'd know it's not about some trans dude. Give us a break...

My interpretation of the lyrics is someone who is not of societal norms whose energy is authentic and hard to come by a rare sight even if it’s not how she looks it’s how she carry herself she’s alluring because she’s actually being herself she’s a individualist and she thinks for herself very confident but as quick as she comes is as quick as she leaves pretty unforgettable presence.

The video is about trans women and how beautiful they can be. Trans people are a marginalized group of people and are often discriminated against in mainstream media. Trans women can appear "strange" to someone who has never met a trans woman. The song is from the perspective of a straight male that is sexually attracted to a trans woman. Realizing that he's falling in love with her.

i saw the lusic video and i interpret it as like a drag queen or a trans woman who really wants to be a girl but never really feels like they are one. that's why they say "i think i'm falling in love with you" because they mean he is falling in love with the girl he wants to be. and thats why he says "i want to be with you" because he wants to be a girl really bad. he wants to be with that personality. he says "you're such a strange girl, the way you look like you do." because thats how he thinks about himself. he feels like he doesnt look like a real girl and he won't pass as one. and he says he "i want to shake you all around, i want to turn you upside down." like somehow if he moves her the tight way he can finally feel like a woman. but he will never be close enough to being one.
