This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Business/Management Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a business-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various management-related degree programs (e.g., MBAs, DBAs, etc.) to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are quite specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

Dowdell, Linda P. "Postulation of project management office structures in reducing operational risk of financial institutions." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3691409.

This exploratory case study used a qualitative research method and explored how Project Management Offices (PMOs) and associated governance groups, such as project management, program management, portfolio management, and risk management, play an important role and are viewed as a positive contributing factor in the successful management of projects. The study also explored the perceived reduction of operational risk that would help prevent the likelihood of financial market collapse reoccurrences, and the perceived importance and impact of operational management structures of financial institutions in contributing to the prevention of another banking collapse. The following themes emerged in the study: Operational risk, regulatory groups, characteristics of PMO structures, optimal PMO structures, PMO effectiveness, and maturity levels of PMOs. A postulation to integrate PMO structures and associated governance groups in the accords (frameworks) of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) was proposed to help financial institutions reduce operational risks that affect consumers of financial services. A non-traditional survey-based case study was conducted with eight project management professionals with financial industry experience in the United States. The case study helped reveal that financial collapses were significantly related to the lack of PMO structures and integration of those structures into regulatory frameworks as mandates. This case study further found that to reduce the likelihood of another financial collapse, a change needs to be made to organizational structures by (a) implementing well-run PMOs and associated governance groups, and (b) integrating those structures into regulatory frameworks.

Herrera, Stephanie A. "Exemplary Leadership| A Mixed-Methods Case Study Discovering How Female Chief Executive Officers Create Meaning." Thesis, Brandman University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10271696.

Purpose: The purpose of this thematic, mixed-methods case study was to identify and describe the behaviors that exemplary female chief executive officers (CEOs) use to create personal and organizational meaning for themselves and their followers through meaning-making domains: character, vision, relationships, wisdom, and inspiration. Additionally, it was the purpose of this study to determine the degree of importance to which followers perceived behaviors within the meaning-making domains.

Methodology: The exploratory mixed-methods case study was selected to gather insight into the behaviors of four female chief executive officers through interviews. Twelve of their employees were asked to complete an online survey. The results of both the qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys were then compared for triangulation.

Findings: The qualitative findings of this research suggest that exemplary female CEOs demonstrate behaviors from each of meaning-making domains (character, vision, relationships, wisdom, and inspiration), with character and vision as most significant to meaning making. Followers concurred with their quantitative input, finding the domains of character and relationships to be the most significant in creating meaning within the organization.

Conclusions: The study’s findings support the need for CEOs to integrate behaviors from each of the meaning-making domains (character, vision, relationships, wisdom, and inspiration) in order to create meaning for themselves and their followers. CEOs wishing to develop behaviors across these domains should make decisions based on a moral compass, invest in strategic planning, as well set aside time for reflection and self-development.

Recommendations: There is a need for further exploration in this area of study. Replication studies could identify differing populations, exemplary male CEOs, or look at other geographical locations. For a deeper look into this topic, a pure qualitative design approach is suggested. The 21 emerging themes also need a deeper understanding and each could contribute to its own study. Finally, it is highly advisable that studies be conducted in order to add to the body of knowledge on meaning-making leadership.

Collazo, Jose. "Impact of leadership style on innovation| A study of retired military senior officers in executive-level supervisory roles within the high-technology engineering defense industry." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3713895.

This study examined the relationship between leadership style and past military rank, and how these might impact an organization’s innovation climate. The sample consisted of (a) retired U.S. Army senior officers currently employed as executive-level supervisors in the high-technology engineering defense industry and (b) those working under such supervisors. Two leadership styles investigated in this study are transactional and transformational, the former defined by incentive structures based on pay and promotion according to performance, and the latter defined by charisma, inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Although these are not mutually exclusive styles, they are conceptually distinct operating modes. The former emphasizes hierarchy, while the latter emphasizes egalitarian relations. The hypothesis was that leaders with military background might habitually operate in transactional style, characteristic of hierarchical organizations where functionality benefits from conformity and lack of dissent as fundamental elements that enhance a high level of coordination. Conversely, research suggests that for-profit engineering-related businesses should benefit from innovation-enhancing characteristics linked with transformational leadership.

Quantitative data was gathered through self-report Likert-scale measures accessed online: the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) with subscales as independent variables and the Workplace Innovation Scale’s innovation climate subscale as a dependent variable. Rank as an independent variable was defined by dividing supervisor-group respondents into two comparison groups, an upper and lower tier. Supervisors and subordinates reported on their own or their supervisor’s leadership style, respectively, and innovation climate. The study aimed primarily to detect correlations between (a) MLQ scores and innovation climate and (b) past rank of supervisors and innovation climate.

Garcia, Munoz Alejandro. "Leadership competencies for effective hospital chief executive officers and chief medical officers in Mexico." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1543405.

This study identified a leadership competency model for developing healthcare executives in Mexico based on the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) Model. Eleven chief executive officers and chief medical officers were interviewed. They considered 86% of the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) competencies as very important or vital and perceived a gap in the performance of these competencies. They also identified additional vital competencies beyond the scope of the NCHL's model. Participants also reported that leadership development and succession planning programs were lacking. Recommendations are to design a leadership development program using the NCHL model as a framework and further customizing the approach per the organization's unique mission, vision, strategy, values, and circumstances. The NCHL is offered as a general strategy for leader development that could be useful in the Mexican private healthcare industry, based on some "best practices" in the design and implementation of the leadership programs.

Ngufor, Patrick. "Quantitative study of perceptions of business owners and loan officers on loan delinquency and default." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3578584.

This research seeks to document if differences in perceptions of small business creditworthiness and lending practices of credit union and commercial lenders exist. This study applied a quantitative method to answer five questions: (1)How do small business owners perceive commercial lenders? (2)How do small business owners perceive credit union lenders? (3)How do commercial banks perceive small businesses? (4)How do credit unions perceive small businesses? (5)What are the differences in the perceptions of small businesses, commercial banks, and credit unions? The study used a quantitative survey instrument to gather data and the data was compared and contrasted among groups (Fitzgerald & Rumrill, 2004). The chi-squared test of differences in probabilities and the goodness of fit test were applied (Figure 2A) to determine if there were differences in probabilities between answers.

The results of this study are significant to small business and banking leaders by helping to define how lenders’ and small businesses’ perceptions affect the differences in loan delinquency rates between commercial lenders and credit unions lenders and by offering new insight into how loan delinquency rates can be reduced. The results also pointed to inherent perceptions of small business owners and lenders that might contribute to the root causes of loan defaults and delinquencies. The results provided information upon which small business owners and financial institution loan officers might act in order to understand how to better manage loans and to reduce the rate of loan delinquency.

OFFICE ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM: GRADUATES EMPLOYMENT AND CURRICULUM RELEVANCE.

Profile image of IJAR Indexing

2019, International Journal of Advanced Research (IJAR)

This work explored on the common concerns in offering Bachelor of Science in Office Administration Program in a state university: one is graduates? employment second is the curriculum relevance as assessed by its alumni. The significant results are presumed inputs on future curriculum enhancement. Objectives have been very significant since state universities and colleges being government regulated schools need to be insightful if their graduates are being employed. The study utilized descriptive survey method employing validated questionnaire checklist and interview. Particularly, it involved the 54 graduates of 2014, 2015 and 2016 at University of Rizal System Rodriguez. The results revealed that respondents are still young and single and that females still prefer to take the course. Furthermore, almost all of the graduates involved or 80 percent are currently employed a significant benchmark that the course is still vendible in various industries. However, the study may have not yet clearly establish the job satisfaction since graduates are just starting to explore the spheres of work. On the curriculum relevance, graduates landed in the entry level position of the course which indicates that they obtained useful elements in their study that are applicable to their works. The results clearly established the significant relationship between employment status and curriculum relevance which means that program implementation preparing the students to be office professionals was concomitant with their employment experiences.

On the job training for students has been used as a traditional mechanism to augment employability of graduates with connected demand for the labor market. This study would like to assess factors of the on the job training of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Financial Management and Human Resource Development Management of Surigao del Sur State University-Cantilan Campus. Descriptive survey method and questionnaire was the main tool. A total of 232 respondents were utilized from school year 2010-2011 up to 2014-2015. Result shows the feedback of the respondents on the different factors of OJT program such as Leadership, Attitude towards work, Competence/Performance, Linkage/Cooperating Firm, Benefits and Incentives, and Training Evaluation were explicitly described as adequate and sufficient for the trainees. However, in profound analysis, it was revealed that there were certain academic years that our trainees experienced many complications, problems and difficulties during their training program which were relatively not given quite attention by the administration of the University. Moreover, as an output of the research, a scheme could be developed to better understand and improve our trainees during their program. This could fully equip them to prepare themselves and explore the outside and actual field of work they learn from the academe.

Psychology and Education

This study aimed to assess the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration graduates from a higher state educational institution in the Philippines on their education and employability vis-à-vis the employers' perspective on graduates' performance and the curricular program. The study used descriptive and qualitative research methods with 200 graduate respondents and employers. The study results show that immediate employment was the foremost reason for enrolling in the program; few graduates pursued advanced studies, but several attended professional training and development. Meanwhile, 81.50% of the graduates were employed, mostly in contractual employment in private companies; and holding rank-and-file positions. Graduates claimed the curriculum was relevant to their jobs. The employers rated the graduates as "much competent" in the workplace, while soft skills were rated as "very much competent "and technical skills as "much competent." The graduates found teamwork, good relationship, professionalism, work ethics, and effective communication to be strengths. To further improve the employability and skills of graduates, a curriculum review is needed; adopt field trips to enhance learning outcomes; establish business technology and simulation rooms; faculty development; and expand linkages with industries for corporate training and employment of graduates.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivations and impacts of a graduate degree on the career and employability of former students of lato sensu and stricto sensu business courses. In addition, an analysis was also conducted comparing these results according to the course type (lato sensu and stricto sensu) and the socio-demographic profile of the graduate. The research, of quantitative nature, was conducted with a sample of 629 graduates from a private higher education institution. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analyses of variance. The results showed that knowledge acquisition, career growth, and curriculum improvement were the main factors that motivated the pursuit of a graduate degree. In addition, participants identified positive reflexes on their careers, including the perception of greater employability and measures of objective and subjective success, but with significant differences according to gender and age group. Finally, it was obse...

This article is the result of a case study on what motivated students at the Diana Colaça Education Center (CEDC) to chose the administration course and what their expectations were when they finished the course. The main objective is to analyze the aspects that influenced the students of the administration course to choose the referred course, describing whether there was any influence , social, family, professional or of another level on the choice, analyzing the degree of satisfaction of students in relations to the which is being studied in the course, as well as understanding what the expectations of these students are after completing the higher level. It started from a theoretical and introspective analysis from bibliographical sources, extending to the field of case study with collection, analysis and interpretation of data, facts and phenomena that influence students to choose higher education in the administration course. With the great diversity in higher education offer, realizing that the demand for the administration course is very present, arouses the curiosity of the educational and social class to try tounderstand what drives these students to choose this course, and throughout the research realizing that they did not try to know the course and its areas of expertise, its pros and cons, before joining it, makes us believe that when they graduate, such professionals will not have "passion" for their professions, thus becoming frustrated professionals and in some sometimes disabled.

The study explores on the employability of the Master in Business Administration (MBA) graduates. Differences on the responses of the graduates were also tested in the impact of MBA program to their job performance when group according to employment data. Descriptive type of research method was utilized in the study. Results revealed that all of the surveyed MBA graduates or 100 percent are presently employed locally during the data gathering. The MBA degree program gives them better opportunity to get new jobs, to be in a regular or permanent status and be considered for a job promotion. Furthermore, salaries and benefits as well as career challenge are some of the common reasons of MBA graduates for staying in their current jobs. They see themselves in five years time in the company on how they could handle responsibilities and how far they could move up their positions in the organization. The group of respondents with rank or clerical position has significantly higher responses in terms of the impact of MBA program to their job performance compared to the group of graduates with professional/ technical/ supervisory and managerial/ executive positions. The impact of the MBA to job performance could not be considered as factor to describe the competency of the graduates in terms of curriculum and student outcomes. It is suggested that there is a need to strengthen the research activities of the graduates through the initiative of the university to conduct collaborative research studies with the industry where the MBA graduates are currently employed and make them as co-authors to maximize the utilization of their acquired knowledge and skills in addressing the needs and demands of their respective organizations.

In today's ever changing economic condition and highly competitive labor market, the school in the Philippines is challenged to produce fittingly educated college graduates necessary to make sure the continuity in the country's development. A tracer study is a simple tool designed to measure the relevance of vocational training. It is seen as management tool for planning, and monitoring of training programs, i.e which course to add, change or phase out. They provide information for pragmatic changes and review of training curricula. They also help to monitor the delivery of training (wiki.answers.com) and minimize possible deficits in a given educational program in terms of content, delivery and relevance and for further development of the institution in the context of quality assurance (www.tec/tracerStudy). This can be used as a marketing tool as well.(wiki.answer.com). To provide students with broader education, more undergraduate programs were offered. The college of Business, accountancy and Public administration offers program Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with majors Marketing Management to cater the needs of the students who wants to pursue a degree tailored to their skills and capabilities, to contribute for economic growth and for the nation's progress. Chicago migrants moved out of Woodlawn's old Wadsworth Elementary School after months of controversy

Sarah Schulte Image

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The old Wadsworth Elementary School is empty once again on Tuesday evening.

The longtime vacant Chicago public school was converted into a migrant shelter under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. This week, the Brandon Johnson administration moved new arrivals to other places, shutting the shelter down.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

"We've been consolidating some of our smaller shelters, and just as part of our overall plan to save taxpayer dollars, bring down the cost of the mission, and Wadsworth was next in line," said Deputy Mayor of Immigrant, Migrant & Refugee Rights Beatriz Ponce de Leo.

Woodlawn residents living near Wadsworth, including a large senior home across the street, are elated that the shelter is closed.

"I'm so happy for the neighborhood that we don't have to endure things that was happening," said Woodlawn resident Genora Stone.

Neighbors complained of noise, loitering and crime. The building was supposed to house 200 new arrivals. At its peak, more than 600 people were living here. But before it opened, residents, along with 20th Ward Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor, were angry that the city spent more than $1 million to renovate the buildings for migrants.

"People wanted to know, 'How are you going to help us?' You put this on us, and now, we are not getting the support we need," said South Side resident Jennifer Maddox.

Maddox helped organize some protests. Residents blocked buses carrying migrants. The Wadsworth shelter resulted in tension between Black and Latino communities and sparked citywide conversations about how the city prioritizes its resources.

"We are the city that has big shoulders are willing to help, but the resources got taken away," Stone said.

Residents are calling on the city to invest in Wadsworth as a neighborhood community center.

"They need to sit down with this community and stakeholders and figure out what is next for this building that is actually going to support the residents who live here," Maddox said.

But for now, the city says it is keeping all of its city-owned buildings on standby in case it is needed again for a short-term emergency shelter.

Study shows how light can transform an insulating material into a semimetal

Overview of the electronic band structure of TiSe2 in equilibrium and after excitation.

The elements in the periodic table are divided into metals, semimetals and non-metals. The distinction is based on their chemical and physical properties and is determined, in particular, by the movement of electrons and the materials' ability to conduct electrical energy: metals are excellent conductors, semimetals have limited conductivity, non-metals are insulating materials, they do not conduct electricity.

These states, however, are not immutable. We know that an insulating material can be transformed into a metal: with chemistry, by introducing atoms with a different number of electrons into the material; or with very high pressures, a condition that can only be created in dedicated laboratories and which is difficult to transfer to other technological applications.

Science Advances has published the results of a study conducted by the Department of Physics of the University of Trento, the Department of Physics of the University of California Berkeley and the Materials Science Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that proposes a third way for the transformation of an insulating material into a semimetal.

"We have observed that, by exposing an insulating material to ultrafast laser pulses (10 femtoseconds, or 10 million billionth of a second), it is possible to alter the movement of electrons," says Alessandra Lanzara, professor of Physics from UC Berkeley and corresponding author of the study, together with Ph.D. student Maxi Huber , leading author of the paper.

This result can only be achieved through photoexcitation above a threshold fluence and with the appropriate material. "We used titanium diselenide (1T-TiSe2), a material that I had the opportunity to study in great depth during my career," says Professor Matteo Calandra from UniTrento and researcher Giovanni Marini, co-authors of the study.

"Titanium diselenide has very special characteristics: it is an insulating material, but it looks like a metal. For example, it is bright, while non-conductors are usually opaque and do not reflect light."

Based on the experimental results and calculations of the two research teams, exposing this material to ultrafast laser pulses alters its energy states and the movement of the electrons and, above a threshold fluence, transforms it into a semimetal for a short period of time (just under 500 femtoseconds).

There is a difference compared to the chemical transformation: the material's transformation is not permanent and as soon as the exposition to the laser is interrupted, it returns to its original state. This process multiplies the possible applications.

"For example," explains Calandra, "we can imagine devices with properties that change from insulating to semi-metallic in a very short time, a necessary feature to develop much more powerful computers, capable of processing complex calculations in a very short time. Today, the computing capacity is based on the use of electric fields, but the possibility of using light opens up new horizons in this field of application."

UniTrento worked on the theoretical and simulation part of the paper . The University of Berkley focused on the experimental part of the research.

Kobach announced the AG’s office will sue the Biden Administration and the Department of Education over their new rules to include LGBTQ+ students in Title IX protections.

Title 9 is a landmark law for schools that get federal funding. It prohibits sex-based discrimination and now includes LGBTQ+ students.

Kobach has threatened to sue the administration over the change for at least a year now. In May of last year, Kobach said in an opinion piece in the Washington Times he would take the administration to court “in less time than it takes a man dressed as a woman to run a mile.”

“Most Kansans know the difference between a man and a woman,” said Kobach. “But Biden’s Title IX regulations effectively require universities to pretend there are no biological differences between men and women and effectively erases those differences.”

The Alliance Defending Freedom and two sister athletes joined Kobach on Monday, which he announced in Topeka and Facebook Live.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Kansas argues that the lawsuit advances Kobach’s “extreme agenda.”

“So that the law persecutes and punishes people rather than protects them,” said Micah Kubic, executive director of the ACLU of Kansas. “I think that’s what his lawsuit is about, saying there are some folks who are not a part of our community who should be excluded, who should be punished and be persecuted by the law.”

The lawsuit includes three other states: Alaska, Utah, and Wyoming.
