So much is at stake in writing a conclusion. This is, after all, your last chance to persuade your readers to your point of view, to impress yourself upon them as a writer and thinker. And the impression you create in your conclusion will shape the impression that stays with your readers after they've finished the essay.

The end of an essay should therefore convey a sense of completeness and closure as well as a sense of the lingering possibilities of the topic, its larger meaning, its implications: the final paragraph should close the discussion without closing it off.

To establish a sense of closure, you might do one or more of the following:

  • Conclude by linking the last paragraph to the first, perhaps by reiterating a word or phrase you used at the beginning.
  • Conclude with a sentence composed mainly of one-syllable words. Simple language can help create an effect of understated drama.
  • Conclude with a sentence that's compound or parallel in structure; such sentences can establish a sense of balance or order that may feel just right at the end of a complex discussion.

To close the discussion without closing it off, you might do one or more of the following:

  • Conclude with a quotation from or reference to a primary or secondary source, one that amplifies your main point or puts it in a different perspective. A quotation from, say, the novel or poem you're writing about can add texture and specificity to your discussion; a critic or scholar can help confirm or complicate your final point. For example, you might conclude an essay on the idea of home in James Joyce's short story collection,  Dubliners , with information about Joyce's own complex feelings towards Dublin, his home. Or you might end with a biographer's statement about Joyce's attitude toward Dublin, which could illuminate his characters' responses to the city. Just be cautious, especially about using secondary material: make sure that you get the last word.
  • Conclude by setting your discussion into a different, perhaps larger, context. For example, you might end an essay on nineteenth-century muckraking journalism by linking it to a current news magazine program like  60 Minutes .
  • Conclude by redefining one of the key terms of your argument. For example, an essay on Marx's treatment of the conflict between wage labor and capital might begin with Marx's claim that the "capitalist economy is . . . a gigantic enterprise of dehumanization "; the essay might end by suggesting that Marxist analysis is itself dehumanizing because it construes everything in economic -- rather than moral or ethical-- terms.
  • Conclude by considering the implications of your argument (or analysis or discussion). What does your argument imply, or involve, or suggest? For example, an essay on the novel  Ambiguous Adventure , by the Senegalese writer Cheikh Hamidou Kane, might open with the idea that the protagonist's development suggests Kane's belief in the need to integrate Western materialism and Sufi spirituality in modern Senegal. The conclusion might make the new but related point that the novel on the whole suggests that such an integration is (or isn't) possible.

Finally, some advice on how not to end an essay:

  • Don't simply summarize your essay. A brief summary of your argument may be useful, especially if your essay is long--more than ten pages or so. But shorter essays tend not to require a restatement of your main ideas.
  • Avoid phrases like "in conclusion," "to conclude," "in summary," and "to sum up." These phrases can be useful--even welcome--in oral presentations. But readers can see, by the tell-tale compression of the pages, when an essay is about to end. You'll irritate your audience if you belabor the obvious.
  • Resist the urge to apologize. If you've immersed yourself in your subject, you now know a good deal more about it than you can possibly include in a five- or ten- or 20-page essay. As a result, by the time you've finished writing, you may be having some doubts about what you've produced. (And if you haven't immersed yourself in your subject, you may be feeling even more doubtful about your essay as you approach the conclusion.) Repress those doubts. Don't undercut your authority by saying things like, "this is just one approach to the subject; there may be other, better approaches. . ."

This handout will explain the functions of conclusions, offer strategies for writing effective ones, help you evaluate conclusions you’ve drafted, and suggest approaches to avoid.

About conclusions

Introductions and conclusions can be difficult to write, but they’re worth investing time in. They can have a significant influence on a reader’s experience of your paper.

Just as your introduction acts as a bridge that transports your readers from their own lives into the “place” of your analysis, your conclusion can provide a bridge to help your readers make the transition back to their daily lives. Such a conclusion will help them see why all your analysis and information should matter to them after they put the paper down.

Your conclusion is your chance to have the last word on the subject. The conclusion allows you to have the final say on the issues you have raised in your paper, to synthesize your thoughts, to demonstrate the importance of your ideas, and to propel your reader to a new view of the subject. It is also your opportunity to make a good final impression and to end on a positive note.

Your conclusion can go beyond the confines of the assignment. The conclusion pushes beyond the boundaries of the prompt and allows you to consider broader issues, make new connections, and elaborate on the significance of your findings.

Your conclusion should make your readers glad they read your paper. Your conclusion gives your reader something to take away that will help them see things differently or appreciate your topic in personally relevant ways. It can suggest broader implications that will not only interest your reader, but also enrich your reader’s life in some way. It is your gift to the reader.

Strategies for writing an effective conclusion

One or more of the following strategies may help you write an effective conclusion:

  • Play the “So What” Game. If you’re stuck and feel like your conclusion isn’t saying anything new or interesting, ask a friend to read it with you. Whenever you make a statement from your conclusion, ask the friend to say, “So what?” or “Why should anybody care?” Then ponder that question and answer it. Here’s how it might go: You: Basically, I’m just saying that education was important to Douglass. Friend: So what? You: Well, it was important because it was a key to him feeling like a free and equal citizen. Friend: Why should anybody care? You: That’s important because plantation owners tried to keep slaves from being educated so that they could maintain control. When Douglass obtained an education, he undermined that control personally. You can also use this strategy on your own, asking yourself “So What?” as you develop your ideas or your draft.
  • Return to the theme or themes in the introduction. This strategy brings the reader full circle. For example, if you begin by describing a scenario, you can end with the same scenario as proof that your essay is helpful in creating a new understanding. You may also refer to the introductory paragraph by using key words or parallel concepts and images that you also used in the introduction.
  • Synthesize, don’t summarize. Include a brief summary of the paper’s main points, but don’t simply repeat things that were in your paper. Instead, show your reader how the points you made and the support and examples you used fit together. Pull it all together.
  • Include a provocative insight or quotation from the research or reading you did for your paper.
  • Propose a course of action, a solution to an issue, or questions for further study. This can redirect your reader’s thought process and help them to apply your info and ideas to their own life or to see the broader implications.
  • Point to broader implications. For example, if your paper examines the Greensboro sit-ins or another event in the Civil Rights Movement, you could point out its impact on the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. A paper about the style of writer Virginia Woolf could point to her influence on other writers or on later feminists.

Strategies to avoid

  • Beginning with an unnecessary, overused phrase such as “in conclusion,” “in summary,” or “in closing.” Although these phrases can work in speeches, they come across as wooden and trite in writing.
  • Stating the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion.
  • Introducing a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion.
  • Ending with a rephrased thesis statement without any substantive changes.
  • Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest of an analytical paper.
  • Including evidence (quotations, statistics, etc.) that should be in the body of the paper.

Four kinds of ineffective conclusions

  • The “That’s My Story and I’m Sticking to It” Conclusion. This conclusion just restates the thesis and is usually painfully short. It does not push the ideas forward. People write this kind of conclusion when they can’t think of anything else to say. Example: In conclusion, Frederick Douglass was, as we have seen, a pioneer in American education, proving that education was a major force for social change with regard to slavery.
  • The “Sherlock Holmes” Conclusion. Sometimes writers will state the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion. You might be tempted to use this strategy if you don’t want to give everything away too early in your paper. You may think it would be more dramatic to keep the reader in the dark until the end and then “wow” them with your main idea, as in a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The reader, however, does not expect a mystery, but an analytical discussion of your topic in an academic style, with the main argument (thesis) stated up front. Example: (After a paper that lists numerous incidents from the book but never says what these incidents reveal about Douglass and his views on education): So, as the evidence above demonstrates, Douglass saw education as a way to undermine the slaveholders’ power and also an important step toward freedom.
  • The “America the Beautiful”/”I Am Woman”/”We Shall Overcome” Conclusion. This kind of conclusion usually draws on emotion to make its appeal, but while this emotion and even sentimentality may be very heartfelt, it is usually out of character with the rest of an analytical paper. A more sophisticated commentary, rather than emotional praise, would be a more fitting tribute to the topic. Example: Because of the efforts of fine Americans like Frederick Douglass, countless others have seen the shining beacon of light that is education. His example was a torch that lit the way for others. Frederick Douglass was truly an American hero.
  • The “Grab Bag” Conclusion. This kind of conclusion includes extra information that the writer found or thought of but couldn’t integrate into the main paper. You may find it hard to leave out details that you discovered after hours of research and thought, but adding random facts and bits of evidence at the end of an otherwise-well-organized essay can just create confusion. Example: In addition to being an educational pioneer, Frederick Douglass provides an interesting case study for masculinity in the American South. He also offers historians an interesting glimpse into slave resistance when he confronts Covey, the overseer. His relationships with female relatives reveal the importance of family in the slave community.

If we want to inculcate a deep sense of responsibility and organization in our kids, and, at the same time, sprout compassion in them, we must let our children take care of pets.”

So, What Is a Good Closing Sentence? See The Difference

One of the best ways to learn how to write a good conclusion is to look at several professional essay conclusion examples. In this section of our guide, we are going to look at two different final paragraphs shaped on the basis of the same template, but even so, they are very different – where one is weak and the other is strong. Below, we are going to compare them to help you understand the difference between a good and a bad conclusion.

Here is the template we used: College degrees are in decline. The price of receiving an education does not correlate with the quality of the education received. As a result, graduated students face underemployment, and the worth of college degrees appears to be in serious doubt. However, the potential social and economic benefits of educated students balance out the equation.

Strong Conclusion ‍

People either see college as an opportunity or an inconvenience; therefore, a degree can only hold as much value as its owner’s skillset. The underemployment of graduate students puts the worth of college degrees in serious doubt. Yet, with the multitude of benefits that educated students bring to society and the economy, the equation remains in balance. Perhaps the ordinary person should consider college as a wise financial investment, but only if they stay determined to study and do the hard work.

Why is this example good? There are several key points that prove its effectiveness:

  • There is a bold opening statement that encompasses the two contrasting types of students we can see today.
  • There are two sentences that recall the thesis statement and cover the key arguments from the body of the essay.
  • Finally, the last sentence sums up the key message of the essay and leaves readers with something to think about.

Weak Conclusion

In conclusion, with the poor preparation of students in college and the subsequent underemployment after graduation from college, the worth associated with the college degree appears to be in serious doubt. However, these issues alone may not reasonably conclude beyond a doubt that investing in a college degree is a rewarding venture. When the full benefits that come with education are carefully put into consideration and evaluated, college education for children in any country still has good advantages, and society should continue to advocate for a college education. The ordinary person should consider this a wise financial decision that holds rewards in the end. Apart from the monetary gains associated with a college education, society will greatly benefit from students when they finish college. Their minds are going to be expanded, and their reasoning and decision making will be enhanced.

What makes this example bad? Here are a few points to consider:

  • Unlike the first example, this paragraph is long and not specific enough. The author provides plenty of generalized phrases that are not backed up by actual arguments.
  • This piece is hard to read and understand and sentences have a confusing structure. Also, there are lots of repetitions and too many uses of the word “college”.
  • There is no summary of the key benefits.
  • The last two sentences that highlight the value of education contradict with the initial statement.
  • Finally, the last sentence doesn’t offer a strong conclusion and gives no thought to ponder upon.
  • In the body of your essay, you have hopefully already provided your reader(s) with plenty of information. Therefore, it is not wise to present new arguments or ideas in your conclusion.
  • To end your final paragraph right, find a clear and straightforward message that will have the most powerful impact on your audience.
  • Don’t use more than one quote in the final clause of your paper – the information from external sources (including quotes) belongs in the body of a paper.
  • Be authoritative when writing a conclusion. You should sound confident and convincing to leave a good impression. Sentences like “I’m not an expert, but…” will most likely make you seem less knowledgeable and/or credible.

Good Conclusion Examples

Now that we've learned what a conclusion is and how to write one let's take a look at some essay conclusion examples to strengthen our knowledge.

The ending ironically reveals that all was for nothing. (A short explanation of the thematic effect of the book’s end) Tom says that Miss Watson freed Jim in her final will.Jim told Huck that the dead man on the Island was pap. The entire adventure seemingly evaporated into nothingness. (How this effect was manifested into the minds of thereaders).
All in all, international schools hold the key to building a full future that students can achieve. (Thesis statement simplified) They help students develop their own character by learning from their mistakes, without having to face a dreadful penalty for failure. (Thesis statement elaborated)Although some say that kids emerged “spoiled” with this mentality, the results prove the contrary. (Possible counter-arguments are noted)
In conclusion, public workers should be allowed to strike since it will give them a chance to air their grievances. (Thesis statement) Public workers should be allowed to strike when their rights, safety, and regulations are compromised. The workers will get motivated when they strike, and their demands are met.
In summary, studies reveal some similarities in the nutrient contents between the organic and non-organic food substances. (Starts with similarities) However, others have revealed many considerable differences in the amounts of antioxidants as well as other minerals present in organic and non-organic foods. Generally, organic foods have higher levels of antioxidants than non-organic foods and therefore are more important in the prevention of chronic illnesses.
As time went by, my obsession grew into something bigger than art; (‘As time went by’ signals maturation) it grew into a dream of developing myself for the world. (Showing student’s interest of developing himself for the community) It is a dream of not only seeing the world from a different perspective but also changing the perspective of people who see my work. (Showing student’s determination to create moving pieces of art)
In conclusion, it is evident that technology is an integral part of our lives and without it, we become “lost” since we have increasingly become dependent on its use. (Thesis with main point)

In academic writing, a well-crafted conclusion can provide the final word on the value of your analysis, research, or paper. Complete your conclusions with conviction!

Conclusions show readers the value of your completely developed argument or thoroughly answered question. Consider the conclusion from the reader’s perspective. At the end of a paper, a reader wants to know how to benefit from the work you accomplished in your paper. Here are ways to think about the purpose of a conclusion:

  • To connect the paper’s findings to a larger context, such as the wider conversation about an issue as it is presented in a course or in other published writing.
  • To suggest the implications of your findings or the importance of the topic.
  • To ask questions or suggest ideas for further research.
  • To revisit your main idea or research question with new insight.

Should you summarize?

Consider what readers can keep track of in their heads. If your paper is long or complex, some summary of your key points will remind readers of the ground you’ve covered. If your paper is short, your readers may not need a summary. In any paper, you’ll want to push beyond mere summary to suggest the implications or applications of your work.

How do you start drafting a conclusion?

Effective conclusions take the paper beyond summary and demonstrate a further appreciation of the paper’s argument and its significance: why it works, why it is meaningful, and why it is valuable. To get started, you might ask yourself these questions:

  • How do the ideas in your paper connect to what you have discussed in class, or to what scholars have written in their treatment of your topic?
  • What new ideas have you added to the conversation? What ideas do you critique?
  • What are the limitations of your data, methods, or results?
  • What are the consequences of the strongest idea that comes out of your paper?
  • How can you return to the question or situation you describe in your introduction?

Notice how Battula et al. explain the limitations of their findings, and identify specific future developments that would make their proposal more accurately testable.

The horizontal whiffle tree mount should have performed the best considering the kinematics of the 16 support points, as well as theoretically displaying the least amount of gravitational distortions. However, due to possible friction at the pivoted joints and the current tolerances on the whiffle tree system, there were difficulties in using this mount. At this time, the process of averaging the measurements taken at four vertical orientations appears to be the best approach.

Gender and Women’s Studies

From Examining Millie and Christine McKoy: Where Enslavement and Enfreakment Meet (Signs 37, 2011), by UW–Madison Professor Ellen Samuels. Notice how Samuels’s conclusion briefly summarizes her article’s main claims before turning to the consequences of her strongest claims.

While there are still many questions left unanswered about the McKoys, and many possible truths to be drawn from their lives, I have aimed in this article to establish that at least two things are not true: the tale of the beneficent and beloved slaveowners and the resigned, downcast expression on Millie’s face in the altered picture. Moreover, I contend that turning away from historical legacies as complex and dangerous as those of enslavement and enfreakment keeps us from being able to understand them and to imagine different futures. We need to develop paradigms of analysis that allow us to perceive and interpret both the radical empowerment of the McKoys’ lives and the oppressions that are no less fundamental to their story. Such an analysis must allow for dissonance, contradictions, and even discomfort in its gaze. Only then can we move forward with the work of shaping new representations and new possibilities for extraordinary bodily experience.

Judicial capacity has been too long misunderstood and too long neglected. It deserves consideration from constitutional theorists on par with that accorded to judicial competence and judicial independence. Writing a Paper: Conclusions

Writing a conclusion.

A conclusion is an important part of the paper; it provides closure for the reader while reminding the reader of the contents and importance of the paper. It accomplishes this by stepping back from the specifics in order to view the bigger picture of the document. In other words, it is reminding the reader of the main argument. For most course papers, it is usually one paragraph that simply and succinctly restates the main ideas and arguments, pulling everything together to help clarify the thesis of the paper. A conclusion does not introduce new ideas; instead, it should clarify the intent and importance of the paper. It can also suggest possible future research on the topic.

An Easy Checklist for Writing a Conclusion

It is important to remind the reader of the thesis of the paper so he is reminded of the argument and solutions you proposed.
Think of the main points as puzzle pieces, and the conclusion is where they all fit together to create a bigger picture. The reader should walk away with the bigger picture in mind.
Make sure that the paper places its findings in the context of real social change.
Make sure the reader has a distinct sense that the paper has come to an end. It is important to not leave the reader hanging. (You don’t want her to have flip-the-page syndrome, where the reader turns the page, expecting the paper to continue. The paper should naturally come to an end.)
No new ideas should be introduced in the conclusion. It is simply a review of the material that is already present in the paper. The only new idea would be the suggesting of a direction for future research.

Conclusion Example

As addressed in my analysis of recent research, the advantages of a later starting time for high school students significantly outweigh the disadvantages. A later starting time would allow teens more time to sleep--something that is important for their physical and mental health--and ultimately improve their academic performance and behavior. The added transportation costs that result from this change can be absorbed through energy savings. The beneficial effects on the students’ academic performance and behavior validate this decision, but its effect on student motivation is still unknown. I would encourage an in-depth look at the reactions of students to such a change. This sort of study would help determine the actual effects of a later start time on the time management and sleep habits of students.

Regardless of what you’re studying, writing essays is probably a significant part of your work as a student . Taking the time to understand how to write each section of an essay (i.e., introduction, body, and conclusion) can make the entire process easier and ensure that you’ll be successful.

Once you’ve put in the hard work of writing a coherent and compelling essay, it can be tempting to quickly throw together a conclusion without the same attention to detail. However, you won’t leave an impactful final impression on your readers without a strong conclusion.

1. Return to Your Thesis

Similar to how an introduction should capture your reader’s interest and present your argument, a conclusion should show why your argument matters and leave the reader with further curiosity about the topic.

To do this, you should begin by reminding the reader of your thesis statement. While you can use similar language and keywords when referring to your thesis, avoid copying it from the introduction and pasting it into your conclusion.

Try varying your vocabulary and sentence structure and presenting your thesis in a way that demonstrates how your argument has evolved throughout your essay.

2. Review Your Main Points

In addition to revisiting your thesis statement, you should review the main points you presented in your essay to support your argument.

However, a conclusion isn’t simply a summary of your essay . Rather, you should further examine your main points and demonstrate how each is connected.

Try to discuss these points concisely, in just a few sentences, in preparation for demonstrating how they fit in to the bigger picture of the topic.

3. Show the Significance of Your Essay

Next, it’s time to think about the topic of your essay beyond the scope of your argument. It’s helpful to keep the question “so what?” in mind when you’re doing this. The goal is to demonstrate why your argument matters.

If you need some ideas about what to discuss to show the significance of your essay, consider the following:

  • What do your findings contribute to the current understanding of the topic?
  • Did your findings raise new questions that would benefit from future research?
  • Can you offer practical suggestions for future research or make predictions about the future of the field/topic?
  • Are there other contexts, topics, or a broader debate that your ideas can be applied to?

While writing your essay, it can be helpful to keep a list of ideas or insights that you develop about the implications of your work so that you can refer back to it when you write the conclusion.

Making these kinds of connections will leave a memorable impression on the reader and inspire their interest in the topic you’ve written about.

4. Avoid Some Common Mistakes

To ensure you’ve written a strong conclusion that doesn’t leave your reader confused or lacking confidence in your work, avoid:

  • Presenting new evidence: Don’t introduce new information or a new argument, as it can distract from your main topic, confuse your reader, and suggest that your essay isn’t organized.
  • Undermining your argument: Don’t use statements such as “I’m not an expert,” “I feel,” or “I think,” as lacking confidence in your work will weaken your argument.
  • Using generic statements: Don’t use generic concluding statements such as “In summary,” “To sum up,” or “In conclusion,” which are redundant since the reader will be able to see that they’ve reached the end of your essay.

Finally, don’t make the mistake of forgetting to proofread your essay ! Mistakes can be difficult to catch in your own writing, but they can detract from your writing.

Conclusions wrap up what you have been discussing in your paper. After moving from general to specific information in the introduction and body paragraphs, your conclusion should begin pulling back into more general information that restates the main points of your argument. Conclusions may also call for action or overview future possible research. The following outline may help you conclude your paper:

In a general way,

  • Restate your topic and why it is important,
  • Restate your thesis/claim,
  • Address opposing viewpoints and explain why readers should align with your position,
  • Call for action or overview future research possibilities.

Remember that once you accomplish these tasks, unless otherwise directed by your instructor, you are finished. Done. Complete. Don't try to bring in new points or end with a whiz bang(!) conclusion or try to solve world hunger in the final sentence of your conclusion. Simplicity is best for a clear, convincing message.

The preacher's maxim is one of the most effective formulas to follow for argument papers:

Tell what you're going to tell them (introduction).

Tell them (body).

Tell them what you told them (conclusion).

Conclusions generally address these issues:

  • How can you restate your ideas concisely and in a new way?
  • What have you left your reader to think about at the end of your paper?
  • How does your paper answer the “so what?” question?

As the last part of the paper, conclusions often get the short shrift. We instructors know (not that we condone it)—many students devote a lot less attention to the writing of the conclusion. Some students might even finish their conclusion thirty minutes before they have to turn in their papers. But even if you’re practicing desperation writing, don’t neglect your conclusion; it’s a very integral part of your paper.

Think about it: Why would you spend so much time writing your introductory material and your body paragraphs and then kill the paper by leaving your reader with a dud for a conclusion? Rather than simply trailing off at the end, it’s important to learn to construct a compelling conclusion—one that both reiterates your ideas and leaves your reader with something to think about.

How do I reiterate my main points?

In the first part of the conclusion, you should spend a brief amount of time summarizing what you’ve covered in your paper. This reiteration should not merely be a restatement of your thesis or a collection of your topic sentences but should be a condensed version of your argument, topic, and/or purpose.

Let’s take a look at an example reiteration from a paper about offshore drilling:

Ideally, a ban on all offshore drilling is the answer to the devastating and culminating environmental concerns that result when oil spills occur. Given the catastrophic history of three major oil spills, the environmental and economic consequences of offshore drilling should now be obvious.

Now, let’s return to the thesis statement in this paper so we can see if it differs from the conclusion:

As a nation, we should reevaluate all forms of offshore drilling, but deep water offshore oil drilling, specifically, should be banned until the technology to stop and clean up oil spills catches up with our drilling technology. Though some may argue that offshore drilling provides economic advantages and would lessen our dependence on foreign oil, the environmental and economic consequences of an oil spill are so drastic that they far outweigh the advantages.

The author has already discussed environmental/economic concerns with oil drilling. In the above example, the author provides an overview of the paper in the second sentence of the conclusion, recapping the main points and reminding the readers that they should now be willing to acknowledge this position as viable.

Though you may not always want to take this aggressive of an approach (i.e., saying something should be obvious to the reader), the key is to summarize your main ideas without “plagiarizing” by repeating yourself word for word. Instead, you may take the approach of saying, “The readers can now see, given the catastrophic history of three major oil spills, the environmental and economic consequences of oil drilling.”

Can you give me a real-life example of a conclusion?

Think of conclusions this way: You are watching a movie, which has just reached the critical plot point (the murderer will be revealed, the couple will finally kiss, the victim will be rescued, etc.), when someone else enters the room. This person has no idea what is happening in the movie. They might lean over to ask, “What’s going on?” You now have to condense the entire plot in a way that makes sense, so the person will not have to ask any other questions, but quickly, so that you don’t miss any more of the movie.

Your conclusion in a paper works in a similar way. When you write your conclusion, imagine that a person has just showed up in time to hear the last paragraph. What does that reader need to know in order to get the gist of your paper? You cannot go over the entire argument again because the rest of your readers have actually been present and listening the whole time. They don’t need to hear the details again. Writing a compelling conclusion usually relies on the balance between two needs: give enough detail to cover your point, but be brief enough to make it obvious that this is the end of the paper.

Remember that reiteration is not restatement. Summarize your paper in one to two sentences (or even three or four, depending on the length of the paper), and then move on to answering the “So what?” question.

How can I answer the “So what?” question?

The bulk of your conclusion should answer the “So what?” question. Have you ever had an instructor write “So what?” at the end of your paper? This is not meant to offend but rather to remind you to show readers the significance of your argument. Readers do not need or want an entire paragraph of summary, so you should craft some new tidbit of interesting information that serves as an extension of your original ideas.

There are a variety of ways that you can answer the “So what?” question. The following are just a few types of such “endnotes”:

The Call to Action

The call to action can be used at the end of a variety of papers, but it works best for persuasive papers. Persuasive papers include social action papers and Rogerian argument essays, which begin with a problem and move toward a solution that serves as the author’s thesis. Any time your purpose in writing is to change your readers’ minds or you want to get your readers to do something, the call to action is the way to go. The call to action asks your readers, after having progressed through a compelling and coherent argument, to do something or believe a certain way.

Following the reiteration of the essay’s argument, here is an example call to action:

We have advanced technology that allows deepwater offshore drilling, but we lack the similarly advanced technology that would manage these spills effectively. As such, until cleanup and prevention technology are available, we gatekeepers of our coastal shores and defenders of marine wildlife should ban offshore drilling, or, at the very least, demand a moratorium on all offshore oil drilling.

This call to action requests that the readers consider a ban on offshore drilling. Remember, you need to identify your audience before you begin writing. Whether the author wants readers to actually enact the ban or just to come to this side of the argument, the conclusion asks readers to do or believe something new based upon the information they just received.

The Contextualization

The contextualization places the author’s local argument, topic, or purpose in a more global context so that readers can see the larger purpose for the piece or where the piece fits into a larger conversation. Writers do research for papers in part so they can enter into specific conversations, and they provide their readers with a contextualization in the conclusion to acknowledge the broader dialogue that contains that smaller conversation.

For instance, if we were to return to the paper on offshore drilling, rather than proposing a ban (a call to action), we might provide the reader with a contextualization:

We have advanced technology that allows deepwater offshore drilling, but we lack the advanced technology that would manage these spills effectively. Thus, one can see the need to place environmental concerns at the forefront of the political arena. Many politicians have already done so, including Senator Doe and Congresswoman Smith.

Rather than asking readers to do or believe something, this conclusion answers the “So what?” question by showing why this specific conversation about offshore drilling matters in the larger conversation about politics and environmentalism.

The twist leaves readers with a contrasting idea to consider. For instance, to continue the offshore drilling paper, the author might provide readers with a twist in the last few lines of the conclusion:

While offshore drilling is certainly an important issue today, it is only a small part of the greater problem of environmental abuse. Until we are ready to address global issues, even a moratorium on offshore drilling will only delay the inevitable destruction of the environment.

While this contrasting idea does not negate the writer’s original argument, it does present an alternative contrasting idea to weigh against the original argument. The twist is similar to a cliffhanger, as it is intended to leave readers saying, “Hmm…”

Suggest Possibilities for Future Research

This approach to answering “So what?” is best for projects that might be developed into larger, ongoing projects later or to suggest possibilities for future research someone else who might be interested in that topic could explore. This approach involves pinpointing various directions which your research might take if someone were to extend the ideas included in your paper. Writing the introduction and body of a paper is a big accomplishment. Now you need to write your conclusion. Writing a conclusion can feel difficult, but it's easier if you plan ahead. First, format your conclusion by revisiting your thesis, summarizing your arguments, and making a final statement. Then, re-read and revise your conclusion to make it effective.

Step 2 Summarize your argument in 1-2 sentences.

Step 3 End your paper with a statement that makes your reader think.

  • Call your reader to action . For example, “By working with school administrators, Greenlawn ISD can increase academic achievement by letting students use the library during lunch.”
  • End with a warning . You might write, “If students aren’t allowed to use the library during lunch, they are missing out on a valuable learning opportunity they’ll never get back.”
  • Evoke an image . Write, “Next year, students at Greenlawn could be gathered around a table in the library reading or broadening their minds.”
  • Compare your topic to something universal to help your reader relate . You might write, “Everyone knows how stressful it is to have a planner full of assignments, so having extra time to work on them during lunch would be a great relief to many students.”
  • Show why the issue is significant. Write, "Giving students more time to spend in the library will help them become more comfortable spending time there, which also helps the library's mission."
  • Predict what would happen if your ideas are implemented . Say, “Next year, students at Greenlawn could increase their academic achievements, but results will only happen if they can use the library during lunch.”
  • End with a compelling quote . For instance, "As author Roald Dahl once said, 'If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books.'"

Step 4 Talk to your instructor if you have questions about the assignment.

  • You could also ask your instructor if you can see an example of a well-written conclusion to give you an idea about what they expect you to write.

  • For example, you wouldn’t want to end your essay about allowing students to use the library during lunch by stating, “As the evidence shows, using the library at lunch is a great way to improve student performance because they are more likely to do their homework. On a survey, students reported using the library to do research, ask homework questions, and finish their assignments early.” This leaves out your points about students reading more and having a place to spend their lunch period if they don’t like eating in the cafeteria.

Step 4 Make sure you don’t introduce any new information.

  • If you have introduced something you think is really important for your paper, go back through the body paragraphs and look for somewhere to add it. It’s better to leave it out of the paper than to include it in the conclusion.

  • If something doesn’t make sense or your conclusion seems incomplete, revise your conclusion so that your ideas are clear.

How to Become an Organized Author

Being an author is no joke, and being an indie author is really no joke. Yes, you have a lot of control over your business, and this can be so rewarding, but it also means that you are responsible for everything in your business . From marketing, to ISBNs, to bookkeeping, and ugh—paying those dreaded taxes. It can become overwhelming very quickly.

You didn’t get into this business to figure out Instagram's constantly shifting algorithm or to become a world class marketer. You got into this business to do one thing—write good books! 

Fear not: you can do this. There are a couple of tactics that successful entrepreneurs swear by, and I’m going to share them with you in this article. Many indie authors have come before you and figured out this rhythm and dance without losing their sanity. (Unless we’re talking about psychological thriller authors. Those guys lost their minds years ago.) I’m going to share their discoveries with you so that you can avoid some of the headaches they definitely had.

Let's start by acknowledging the pain points that plague many indie authors on their quests for literary stardom. 

Time, that precious commodity, is often in short supply. Between writing, editing, marketing, and everything in between, authors often find themselves stretched thin, struggling to meet deadlines and fulfill obligations. Oh, and having a full-time day job and a family, too? Forget about friends and hobbies. Not having enough time can feel like an impossible problem to solve for many indie authors.

But time isn't our only adversary—overwhelm lurks around every corner. From managing social media accounts to shipping signed copies of books, the to-do list never seems to end. . . It often feels like all the plates are spinning and it’s only a matter of time before they all drop. The sheer volume of tasks on an indie author’s desk can leave even the most seasoned author feeling like they're drowning in a sea of responsibilities. 

And let's not forget about inefficiency—the silent killer of productivity. Manual processes, redundant tasks, and disorganized workflows sap both our time and energy. Inefficiency can leave any author feeling like they're spinning their wheels without making any real progress. 

Building Efficient Systems & Processes

Fear not, my author friends, for there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a three-pronged approach that promises to revolutionize the way you do business. This is the secret sauce that I’ve seen many successful authors build empires with. It’s what keeps their business running and their time freed up to write books that they love. 

Implementing Systems & Processes

You hear about systems and processes all day long when it comes to scaling and organizing your author business. But what does it actually mean? Let me break it down for you. 

  • A system is a series of steps taken to accomplish a goal or to run part of your business. 
  • A process is the steps taken within that system. 

Within an indie author business, you might have a system for your social media. The process might look like this: 

1. You take a hook or memorable quote from your book and create a TikTok out of it.

2. You research or have a bank of hashtags to pull from, select the ideal hashtags, and write a caption for your post. (Don’t forget to use Kindlepreneurs Hashtag Generator !)

3. You add a trending sound to it.

4. You post the TikTok.

5. You (or someone on your team) then repurpose the TikTok by posting it on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and YouTube Shorts with the appropriate caption and hashtags for each platform.

See? The terms “system” and “process” sound quite fancy, but you probably already have these repeatable, consistent systems in your business without even realizing it. And if you don’t, you should definitely start to document your processes and begin creating systems in your indie author business that will help you reduce the amount of decisions you have to make on a daily basis.

Standard Operating Procedures, or SOPs, are the backbone of all business operations. Basically, it’s a documented way of getting something done. When you create your systems and processes, the next step is to document any repeatable system and process that you have. That way, when you go to format your book next time you will remember all the exact steps you need to take, and you won’t become so focused on getting your print book right that you completely forget to format your ebook. (Yes, this happened before to a dear client of mine! Luckily they were able to get it sorted out in time before the launch. Phew.) 

If I haven’t already convinced you to implement systems, processes, and SOPs in your indie author business, consider this: decision fatigue. 

Decision fatigue is extremely common among authors and business owners alike. On average, we make 35,000 decisions a day. What t-shirt will you wear? What should you eat for lunch? What bills need to be paid? How much time should I book for that meeting? These decisions may seem like small ones, but their magnitude adds up to seriously affect our well-being. It’s no wonder you’re exhausted. 

The decisions you make as a writer should be the important ones! Like which character to kill off next, and how else you might torment your poor readers. 

How to Become More Organized

As much as we like to romanticize the unorganized, mysterious author and creative, the truth is that organization is the backbone to every successful author business. But being an organized author doesn’t mean you have to become some stiff-necked, rigid, boring creative. You have to grow your mindset as an author and realize that organization and discipline = freedom. 

Having a Dedicated Workspace

If you don’t already, you need to have some kind of workspace that is dedicated to your writing practice and your business tasks. It doesn’t need to be fancy. (Did you know Emily Dickinson wrote all her incredible books and poems with just a small, mediocre desk that looked out a window?) The following are essentials: 

  • A sturdy desk or table 
  • A decent chair (your kaboose is going to be spending a lot of time in it, so don’t skimp on this!) 
  • A reliable computer – even if you don’t have a big budget, nowadays you can find decent, inexpensive Chromebooks and laptops without much trouble
  • A good lamp for those late night writing sessions

Don’t underestimate investing in a good machine. You don’t have time to fiddle with glitchy software updates and charging cords not working. Make sure that your workspace is quiet and comfortable; you should be able to enjoy hiding away from the world so that you can focus on creating worlds of your own. 

Removing Distractions 

Put away your phone or put it in do not disturb mode. I repeat. Put it away! Don’t let it be allowed in your workspace. Every time a notification dings or you get a text message and you check it, it takes us on average 23 minutes to refocus . That is a lot of time! 

If you need to, you can even make it so your writing laptop isn’t connected to the internet. Famed author Sarah J. Maas does this. Her workspace is in her attic and her computer isn’t connected to the internet. This allows her to write undistracted. So, don’t be afraid to lock down when you’re in your writing space. 

Managing Your Time

When you feel overwhelmed as an author, you need to focus on carving out time for two things daily: writing and marketing. You have to keep writing your books and you have to keep marketing those books. When all else fails, remind yourself that these are the two essentials. When you feel like you’re falling behind, ask yourself these two questions: 

  • When can I get some words down today?
  • What do I need to do to market my books today?

My favorite way of accomplishing this is to encourage authors to carve out time in their calendar and call it “sacred time”. Your sacred time is for your writing and your writing only. Remember, this writing is sacred! Sacred means it’s dedicated, set apart, and respected. You (and those around you) have to respect this time in your calendar as such. If you can, try carving out an hour for writing and then half an hour for marketing.

Time management looks different for every author. Some authors are stay-at-home moms and their sacred time might be at night when the kids are finally in bed. For busy corporate leaders, this might mean getting to the office an hour early before everyone else and writing just a page a day (ahem, John Grisham did this). Remember, the pain of having to get up early now means someday you won’t have to! 

One day you will have more control over your schedule. But until then, you have to squeeze in the words and marketing where you can. Don’t give up! Every author has to start somewhere, and very few authors start out with wide-open schedules and little to no responsibilities. 

Pomodoro Method

No author can truly focus throughout their entire writing time. Your brain needs a break after a while! My suggestion for this is a favorite of many creatives: the Pomodoro method. 

The Pomodoro method involves working in sprints and giving yourself a short break between them. So you write for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break. Then you come back and write for another 25 minutes,then take another 5 minute break. Some people like to do 50 minute sprints and 10 minute breaks. You can play around with different sprint/break times and find what feels best for you. I love using YouTube videos like these to help me keep track of my sprints and give me some background music that helps me focus. 

Keeping Track of Tasks

Part of what causes authors to feel overwhelmed is not having visibility of their tasks and deadlines. This is why I encourage authors to use a project management system whenever they can. There are tons of amazing options out there. Here are some of my personal favorites and why I love them:

To me, Notion is like a big binder with tabs in it. I love Notion because of its versatility and functionality. There’s no fuss about it, and you can make things as straightforward or as in-depth as you’d like. When I work with authors as an assistant or perform a systems overhaul, I love creating templates within Notion for authors to use again and again, whether it’s for launches, marketing, or even a formatting checklist. The possibilities are really endless. I also have a Notion template available that I’ve created just for authors here. 

You can customize Notion to your hearts delight! 

Or you can keep it incredibly simple and user-friendly. 

If you love lists, Asana is your best friend. With the ability to create tasks, give them due dates, and assign them to team members in a flash, it’s incredibly easy to use and manage. The feeling of checking off a task is like no other! In Asana you can also create templates that you can reuse for launches, and you can create recurring tasks for things you need to do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. 

Trello is great if you’re someone who needs a comprehensive visual of everything that you have going on. With it having a kanban board view, it’s sort of like having a giant bulletin board with sticky notes that you can move from one column to another. With Trello, you can also assign tasks due dates, create templates, and invite members of your team to collaborate on each different book or launch. 

Sound Like Too Much?

Ok, so now you have your systems in place and your shiny new SOPs, but how do you scale your author business when there is just no time left in the day? The answer is the third prong: virtual teams. By enlisting the support of virtual assistants, formatters, editors, cover designers, and more, authors can offload non-essential tasks and delegate responsibilities with confidence. 

Whether it's managing social media accounts, scheduling book signings, formatting your book, or conducting market research, virtual team members offer a cost-effective solution to the perennial problem of time scarcity. With the right virtual team supporting them, authors can reclaim their time, reduce stress, and unlock their full potential.

How to Begin Building a Team

Start with this exercise. 

  • Write down everything you do in a week for your author business. And I mean everything . Answering emails. Plotting. Writing. Ordering covers. Responding to reader comments. Checking Goodreads. Everything. 
  • From all these tasks, identify the ones that only you can do. For authors, this is pretty obvious—writing! From there, identify the tasks that you hate doing. The ones that take up way too much time and energy because you procrastinate them, or the ones that take way longer than they should because you’re just not great at doing them. 
  • Once you identify the tasks that are bogging you down, begin outsourcing those ones first. Document your systems and processes using something simple and then create SOPs for them.You can create an author biz training manual in just one Google Doc to start with, play around in Notion, or even use a spreadsheet. Maybe you don’t have a set “system” necessarily, but you do have templates that you’ve created. For example, maybe you’ve created a template for your book series within Atticus. You can document this process so an assistant can start helping you with formatting.  Perhaps you frequently stack book promotion deals and cycle through promoting your different books. Write this process down and note the rhythm you follow, how you decide what to promote where. The goal is to get all of this stuff out of your head and onto paper.

Finding the Right Teammates

Finding someone you can outsource tasks to is less about competency and more about trust. You could hire the world's greatest editor, but do you trust them to get the job done in a timely manner so you can stay on track with your launch schedule?

Oftentimes other authors will have trusted editors, formatters, assistants, cover designers, etc. that they like working with and can refer to you. Ask around and see who your author friends recommend, or try asking in author groups on Facebook. You can hire many different freelancers by using a marketplace like Reedsy . 

A word of caution: be sure to vet potential hires thoroughly before sending them any money. You can always ask for references and do some quick research on Google, Facebook, etc. to see reviews from others who have worked with them before. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s common for folks like editors, formatters, or virtual assistants to ask for a partial payment up front. This isn’t shady business; they are professionals who are trying to protect themselves, too. 

No matter what, always, always have a contract or working agreement in place when you begin outsourcing. This protects both you and the person that you’re hiring for the job.

By building efficient systems, refining processes, and assembling virtual teams, indie authors like you can navigate the complexities of self-publishing with confidence and clarity.

Copy-on-Write performance and debugging

This is a follow-up to our previous coverage of Dev Drive and copy-on-write (CoW) linking. See our previous articles from May 24, 2023 , October 13, 2023 , and November 2, 2023 .

Dev Drive was released in Windows 11 in October, 2023, and will be part of Windows Server 2025 this fall, along with an enhancement to automatically use copy-on-write linking (CoW-in-Win32). Here, we’ll cover the results of several months of repo build performance testing for several large internal codebases, provide some information on determining whether a file is a CoW link, and share a few tips we found from adding Dev Drive to thousands of Dev Box VMs for daily developer use.

Repo build performance

Let’s start with the chart:

The highest win of 43% did not replicate for all the repos under test. However, many repos did get a reduction of 10% or more. Several patterns stand out when comparing to the underlying repo code:

  • Repos containing C# with deep project-to-project dependencies cause MSBuild to copy assemblies many times. These can get a significant benefit from CoW linking.
  • Repos that perform lots of additional copying to create microservice layouts as part of the build output also get a strong benefit.
  • Repos heavy in C++ showed only a small win except where they were copying files for microservice layouts. C++ builds in MSBuild do not by default copy output files over and over again, and MSVC tends to generate fewer, larger files, where Dev Drive’s reduced file I/O overhead is less effective.
  • Two repos with low benefit had a project dependency graph with a lot of initial parallelism that was noticeably faster but with a near-linear chain of large projects at the end that reduced the effect of speeding up I/O in each project. 1

Test methodology notes: Tests for reach repo were run on NTFS and Dev Drive partitions on the same Dev Box VM. NuGet and other package caches were placed in the same partition as the source code. All repos used the Microsoft.Build.CopyOnWrite SDK and, where applicable, an upgraded Microsoft.Build.Artifacts SDK. CoW-in-Win32 was not available at the time of testing, and may produce different results when released this fall. Five or more iterations were run per test case, with the first one dropped to avoid measuring a cold disk cache. Measurements were of the build phase only, with package restore and inline tests separated out. All builds were run with clean repo and output directories to ensure a full build. Typical build times per iteration were selected to be about 20 minutes, which for large repos usually meant building a specific subdirectory.

How to determine whether a file is a CoW link

CoW links are also known as block clones , where blocks of data on disk are referred-to from multiple file entries. fsutil contains subcommands that let us view files from a block clone point of view. Let’s take a look at a block clone of an assembly copied from a package to my MSBuild output directory:

This shows that there are 97 clusters corresponding to the main 400K body of the assembly. Note the Ref: 0x4 meaning the underlying block at Logical Cluster Number 0x1297cf7 has 4 block clones on the disk volume, of which this is one. The last cluster with one reference holds the block clone reference metadata, which means for every cloned file there is one cluster actually used for tracking purposes.

Using ProcMon with Dev Drive

ProcMon uses an included filter driver whose name, e.g. ProcMon24 , changes over time. Attach the filter driver like:

You can generally leave ProcMon24 in the allow list, as it is only attached to the volume when ProcMon is in use. Our internal Dev Box images are generated with the filter always added.

Using Microsoft Performance Recorder (Xperf) with Dev Drive

Attach the FileInfo filter driver:

Then measure. After measurement, it’s important to disable FileInfo as it is always attached to the Dev Drive when allowed, slowing performance.

Finding and fixing leaked CoW references

Dev Drive, which is based on ReFS, allows only 8176 clones of a data block. If you have a file that fails to copy because of an error related to too many clones, e.g. MaxCloneFileLinksExceededException from the CoW library used in the Microsoft.Build.CopyOnWrite and Microsoft.Build.Artifacts SDKs, winerror ERROR_BLOCK_TOO_MANY_REFERENCES = 347, or NTSTATUS STATUS_BLOCK_TOO_MANY_REFERENCES = 0xC000048C, you might have too many actual references, or you might need to clean up orphaned references. We ran into this problem on one machine that had run continuous CoW builds for weeks under a prerelease CoW-in-Win32 implementation, so we don’t expect this to appear in the wild very often.

In an elevated console or PowerShell run the following, where x: is the drive letter of your Dev Drive.

This will scan and fix dangling references. You can add the /d parameter to detect but not fix these references.

Example output from a volume with a significant number of orphaned references:

Copy-on-write will be on by default for Dev Drive in the 24H2 Windows operating system release wave. Dev Drive and CoW will be available in the Server SKU for the first time starting in Server 2025 later this year. These releases will make many builds on Windows notably faster, particularly C# builds. CoW-in-Win32 will avoid the need to integrate the CoW SDKs or modify other build engines or tools.

In the intervening months, consider integrating the CopyOnWrite SDK into your MSBuild repo and creating a Dev Drive partition on your development machine.

We hope you find your build performance notably faster!
