Why study Midwifery with us?
What our students say…
The main factor that persuaded me to pursue a PhD at UWL was the opportunity to work with supervisors, who are both experts in their field and to be part of a university with a great reputation. My doctoral experience at the University of West London was outstanding. The university offers everything you need as a student to succeed in your studies and I received a huge amount of support. Also, the library provides a fantastic study environment.
World-leading Research
The University of West London has been recognised by the Government's Research Excellence Framework (REF) for its exceptional research work.
You will have a supervisory team made up of a Director of Studies with expertise in your chosen field, a further supervisor and, where appropriate, an additional adviser. Your research will be judged through the presentation of a thesis or artefact and a viva voce for academic assessment. We provide a stimulating and supportive environment where you will benefit from:
- peer feedback and discussion
- a series of master-classes and lectures from industry figures
- support by a supervisor and second supervisor suited to your project.
About PhD study
This course is available for you to study either on a full-time or part-time basis and you have the flexibility to switch should you need to.
A PhD is founded on independent research. You will undertake a systematic and in-depth exploration of your chosen topic to produce a substantial body of knowledge and make an original and important contribution to the subject area.
The support provided by your supervisory team will be vital to your student experience and scholarly advancement. You and your supervisors will have regular one-to-one meetings which will provide you with opportunities to develop your research topic and discuss your progress.
College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare Research Centres

- The Richard Wells Research Centre
- European Institute for Person-Centred Health and Social Care
At the Richard Wells Research Centre we conduct primary research, undertake guideline development and review and, through its work as an internationally accredited centre for evidence-based practice, carries out comprehensive systematic reviews.
Our European Institute for Person-Centred Health and Social Care looks at newer models of care that are personalised, integrated and contextualise for chronically ill patients who need more comprehensive forms of assistance.
Our research record
View our academic journal 'New Vistas' to see the work of students and academics who are making an impact both locally and globally through their research findings.
Based in the heart of Ealing, west London, you can make use of the excellent transport links to travel to the the capital or further afield - ideal for attending research meetings and networking events.

Nursing & Midwifery PhD Scholarship
Western Health is committed to providing Best Care to our community. Underpinning Western Health’s world-class clinical care is our commitment to research and education.
A key initiative of Western Health’s Strategic Directions 2021-2023 is to “build stronger connections between and amongst researchers, educators, clinical leaders and frontline staff, through multidisciplinary projects, learning and innovation”. This is achieved by fostering curiosity and supporting staff to lead and participate in research.
The Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery in conjunction with the Faculty of Health at Deakin University are delighted to offer a co-funded PhD scholarship to undertake dedicated nursing and/or midwifery research. The scholarship will consist of:
- a tax exempt stipend of $48,500 per annum (at 2023 rate). Standard scholarships are usually to the value of $33,500 per annum, so this is an excellent opportunity for a Western Health nurse or midwife,
- free tuition at Deakin University to study full time for 3 years to achieve your PhD.
Employment arrangements during the sabbatical:
During the 3 year period whilst the successful candidate undertakes full-time study to achieve their PhD, Western Health will:
- Maintain their substantive position for the 3 year period,
- Temporarily vary their hours to 8 hours a fortnight and put them on our Pool. This will give the candidate flexibility to be able to work an additional shift each week/fortnight to supplement the stipend. If the candidate cannot work a shift in a given fortnight due to study commitments, Western Health will give them paid leave (utilising the candidate’s accumulated leave entitlements) or unpaid leave for that pay period.
- The classification used for Pool will be assessed on a case by case basis, taking into consideration the candidate’s experience and skills.
- If the candidate decides that they’d like to return to their substantive position prior to completion of their PhD (earlier than the expected 3 years), then they’d need to inform us in writing giving us 4 weeks notice. We will then put arrangements in place to allow that to occur.
- There will be an expectation that the successful candidate will return to their substantive position after the 3 year sabbatical period. If their intentions change during this period, they will be required to inform us in writing providing a 4 week notice period.
Terms of grant
The successful candidate must be eligible to apply for candidature through Deakin University School of Nursing and Midwifery. The successful candidate will work with staff in the Western Health Deakin University partnership.
All research must comply with Western Health and Deakin University’s Research ethics and governance policies, and with the National Health and Medical Research Council statement. Ethics approval must be gained before the commencement of any research.
Nurses and midwives interested in this opportunity are strongly encouraged to seek support and advice from the Chair of Nursing, Professor Bodil Rasmussen or the Chair of Midwifery, Professor Linda Sweet . They will assist in confirming eligibility, and in preparing a research proposal.
Application guidelines
Applicants must complete the Western Health and Deakin University PhD Scholarship 2024 application form and provide the required supporting documents.
The following criteria will be used to assess applications:
Applications must be submitted by email to [email protected]

Eligibility criteria for the Rongoā category includes being of Māori descent, studying or working in the health sector, enrolled at a rongoā provider or working under a rongoā practitioner, and having endorsement from a rongoā mentor supporting the applicant's practice and lived experience.
Clinical (Undergraduate)
Ākonga eligible for the Clinical (Undergraduate) category are those of Māori descent, studying or working in the health sector, enrolled at an approved tertiary provider in New Zealand, and enrolled in a related course at NZQCF Level 7 and above. The subcategories of the clinical (undergraduate) are midwifery, AHS&T (Allied Health, Scientific & Technical), medical, and nursing.
Postgraduate (Clinical and Non-Clinical)
Eligibility criteria for the Postgraduate (Clinical and Non-Clinical) category include being of Māori descent, studying or working in the health sector, enrolled at an approved tertiary provider in New Zealand, and enrolled in a related course at NZQCF Level 7 and above in a postgraduate program.
The Te Pitomata Grant Categories for 2024 encompass several key areas within the healthcare sector in New Zealand. These categories are designed to support Māori who are studying or working in various healthcare-related fields.
The inclusion of the Rongoā category acknowledges the importance of traditional Māori healing practices in the health sector. Rongoā Māori, as a holistic and cultural healing practice, plays a significant role in the lives of many whānau (families). By supporting ākonga Māori studying or practicing Rongoā, the program aims to preserve and promote indigenous healing methods, contributing to culturally responsive care and improved health outcomes for Māori.
- Rongoā Māori is a holistic and cultural healing practice which incorporates deep, personal connections with the natural environment. It is a unique system of healing derived from mātauranga which many Māori regard as central to their identity.
- Rongoā practices include mirimiri and romiromi, mahi wairua, wai rākau, whakairo, tā moko, moko kauae and rongoā rākau. It can also include understanding of and connection to whakapapa and te ao Māori, kōrero, and protection of te taiao.
- Rongoā plays a really important role in the lives of whānau. The holistic and indigenous system of healing hauora in Aotearoa is crucial to the current and future wellbeing of many, and our view is that this should be recognised.
- Ākonga need to be studying through a Wānanga (e.g., Te Wānanga o Awanuiārangi) or other provider or working alongside a rongoā practitioner.
The Clinical (Undergraduate) category targets ākonga Māori pursuing undergraduate studies in health-related fields. By supporting students at this level of education, the program aims to cultivate a diverse and skilled health workforce from early stages of their career. This category addresses the need for increased Māori representation in clinical roles, ensuring culturally competent care and addressing health disparities within Māori communities.
The Postgraduate (Clinical and Non-Clinical) focuses on supporting ākonga Māori undertaking postgraduate studies in health-related disciplines. The program aims to enhance the expertise and leadership capabilities of Māori professionals within the health sector. This category supports the development of advanced practitioners and researchers, contributing to innovation, evidence-based practice, and the overall improvement of Māori health outcomes.
