Applications for Ph.D/M.Sc(Engg.)  under  Full Time/Part Time  are invited twice in a year through the VTU Notifications (June/February). Interested candidates may apply for registration through VTU Selection Process (Research Aptitude Test [Entrance Examination] followed by personal Interview) to pursue their  Ph.D/M.Sc(Engg.)  by Research at NHCE which is a Recognized Research Centre of VTU and also an Affiliated College.

Application form can be downloaded from the website  www.vtu.ac.in   on notification. However, the interested candidates need to mention the name of proposed Research Supervisor/Guide available to guide the  Ph.D/M.Sc(Engg.)  by Research candidates at the Recognized Research Centre (NHCE) and also the proposed title (tentative) of the research/area of interest etc.

About Programme

The Department has an R & D centre recognised by VTU. The Department offers Ph.D and M.Sc(Engg) by research programs. It is empowered by 5 research guides with rich industrial and academic experience. Presently 13 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D at the center. The thrust areas majorly include Sensors, MEMS, VLSI Design, Image processing, Pattern recognition, Real Time Embedded Applications, Wireless Sensor Networks & Biomedical applications. Several years of research has resulted in a large number of publications in National & International Journals & Conferences.

Eligibility for registration to ph.d.

There shall be provision for the following categories of candidates for admission to Ph.D.:

  • Full-Time : Candidates to pursue Ph.D. research on full time basis shall also include QIP/FIP scholars and those belonging to Integrated Degree programmes such as M.Sc.(Engg.) by Research/(Full-Time) M.Tech.
  • Part-Time: In-service candidates having a minimum professional experience of one year after their PG Degree from among the regular faculty members working in any Engineering College /Polytechnic / University / Deemed to be University (recognized /accredited by appropriate bodies in India) or research staff of public / private organizations shall be eligible to pursue Ph.D. research on a part time basis.
  • Integrated Degree: Students registered for M.Sc.(Engg.) by Research(Full- Time)/M.Tech./M.Arch, may be allowed to upgrade to Ph.D. as applicable on a case by case basis.
  • Distance mode: Candidates with MBA and MCA Degrees obtained through distance mode from UGC/DEC approved institutions may be allowed to register for Ph.D. as per UGC/AICTE norms on condition of two years teaching/research experience after completion of their PG Degree award.

ELIGIBILITY FOR REGISTRATION to M.Sc (Engg) by Research

Admission to the M.Sc (Engg) by Research Course shall be open to candidates who satisfy any of the following requirements:

  • Candidates who have passed B.E. / B.Tech. Examination of VTU or B.E. / B.Tech. of any other recognized University, recognized by this University as equivalent thereto or any other examination recognized by this University as equivalent thereto and have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with not less than 60% of the marks in the aggregate, in the examinations of the semesters considered for the declaration of class/grade. However, a relaxation to the extent of 10% shall be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST and any other category as notified by Government of Karnataka from time to time;
  • Teaching / Research Staff / Teaching Assistants, working in any Engineering College and Polytechnic Institutions recognised by AICTE either in the State of Karnataka or outside, who have passed B.E / B.Tech. Examination and put in a minimum of one year of teaching experience in Engineering Colleges / Research Organizations and sponsored by the respective Institutions / DTE in case of aided institutions;
  • Employees of the State Government/Central Government/Quasi Government Organizations/Public Sector Industries/Reputed Private Industries, who have passed B.E./B.Tech. Examination and put in a minimum of one year of working experience and are sponsored by the concerned Organizations;
  • Awardees of research fellowship by nationally recognised bodies like CSIR etc., provided they have B.E. / B.Tech. Examination and put in a minimum of one year of working experience;
  • NRI/FN/PIOs who have passed the B.E. / B.Tech. or equivalent examination recognised by VTU as equivalent to UG Engineering Degree Programme, with medium of instruction in English or qualified TOFEL/ELTS. Such candidates shall be able to communicate and to submit the synopsis of Dissertation work in English language

In addition to the above, the candidates shall be qualified in GATE or equivalent National Level within the immediately preceding five years or in the University level Research Aptitude Test, the result of which shall be valid for a three-year period.

The candidates who have successfully completed this course have  vast   career  opportunities  in various fields of engineering.

They can get jobs in government owned organizations/ PSU’s such as  Bharat  Heavy Electrical’s Limited (BHEL),Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) & in Private Sector/ MNC’s such as Texas Instruments, Intel, AMD, CISCO, IBM, Samsung Electronics, Sony.

Teaching is also an option for them; they can become Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in colleges and universities after fulfilling UGC guidelines.

Department of BioTechnology

Department profile.

To be a leading Biotechnology Engineering department that imparts quality technical education with strong research component, to develop solutions in the field of food, health and environment.

To provide quality technical education in a conducive learning environment to produce professionals, researchers with a zeal for lifelong learning and a commitment to society.

The Department of Biotechnology established in 2002 offers a four-year B.E. Biotechnology Program with an intake of 60 students and a two-year M.Tech. Biotechnology Program with an intake of 18 students. The UG and PG curriculum emphasises on biology-engineering interface bringing together engineering principles and life sciences to impart knowledge in core areas of Biotechnology. Both UG and PG Programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The Department is a recognized Research Centre by VTU, Belgaum, offering M.Sc (Engg.) by research and PhD programs. The Department also offers a Post Graduate Diploma in Biopharmaceutical Technology under the Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Programme (BiSEP), supported by the Department of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka.

The Department has 16 faculty members, all are Ph.D holders. The faculty members have competence in core areas of Biotechnology viz. Food and Agricultural Biotechnology; Health and Medical Biotechnology; Environmental Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering. The faculty members have expertise in diverse disciplines of Biotechnology with focussed research funded by national/state funding agencies (DST, AICTE, KBITS, VGST, VTU, RGUHS etc.). The average publications of the department in SCI and SCOPUS indexed journals are 30/year. The Department has collaborations with some of the leading biotech industries like: Biocon, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), Bristol Myers Squibb India Ltd, Novozymes South Asia Pvt Ltd, Merck Life Sciences, Himalaya Drug Company, etc.

The Department has well equipped academic laboratories and state-of-the art research laboratories. High quality research-based in-house projects guided by the faculty have attracted state funding, resulted in publications in high impact journals and won Best project awards at the state level. Students carry out their internships at various premier institutes in India and abroad. Several students receive the prestigious Indian Science Academies Fellowship (INSA) and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCSAR) Summer research fellowship. Every year, a sizeable number of graduate students pursue their higher education at various premier Institutes in India and abroad after qualifying GATE, GRE & TOEFL exams. The Department has established student clubs and professional student chapters under Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, Kolkata and Institution of Engineers (India) to provide collaborative learning platform for the students. Students at Department of Biotechnology not only excel in academics but also have received awards and recognitions in various extra-curricular activities.

  • 2002 B.E. Biotechnology program started under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, with an intake of 30 students.
  • 2006 Student intake increased from 30 to 60.
  • 2007 Autonomous under VTU.
  • 2008 Recognized R&D centre offering PhD / M.Sc. (Engg.) in Biotechnology under VTU.
  • 2009 NBA Accredited B.E-Biotechnology Programme for three years: (June 2010 - 2013)
  • 2011 Outcome Based Education is implemented.
  • 2012 M. Tech in Biotechnology program started under autonomous scheme, with an intake of 18 students.
  • 2016 NBA Accredited B.E-Biotechnology Programme for three years: (June 2016 - 2019)
  • 2018 PG Diploma in Biopharmaceutical Technology started. This Program is supported by the Department of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka.
  • 2019 NBA Accredited B.E-Biotechnology Programme for three years (June 2019-2022)

Department of Biotechnology offers three programs that are affiliated to VTU – Belgaum and recognized by AICTE:

Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology with intake count of 60

Master of technology in biotechnology with intake count of 18, m.sc. (engg) by research with intake as per vtu norms, ph.d. with intake as per vtu norms, pg diploma in biopharmaceutical technology (link here), program educational objectives (peos):.

  • PEO 1: To produce graduates with strong foundation in mathematics, basic and engineering sciences contributing to biotechnology.
  • PEO 2: To produce graduates who can pursue higher education and research in Biotechnology and allied fields.
  • PEO 3: To produce graduates with an ability to design, develop and implement research projects and apply to solve problems related to areas of biotechnology.
  • PEO 4: To produce graduates who can work in multidisciplinary teams with professional ethics, good communication, leadership skills and commitment to society.

Engineering graduates will be capable of:.

  • Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

Dr. Chandra Prabha M N

  • Dr. Chandra Prabha M N, completed her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering securing II rank at University level from M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology in 1997. She obtained her Masters in Engineering from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in 2001 and Ph.D. from Faculty of Engineering, IISc in 2007. She has received Fellowship from CEFIPRA- France, to undergo a high level scientific training at CNRS, Henry Poincare University, Nancy, France in 2003 and was a visiting scholar at Columbia University, USA under DST- NSF joint research program in 2004. She has presented her research in various International Scientific forums at South Korea (2012), Italy (2010), Argentina (2009), Germany (2007), Cape Town (2005).
  • Dr. Chandra Prabha M N joined Ramaiah Institute of Technology as faculty in 2007. Her research interest includes microbe-mineral interactions and application of nanomaterials/nanocomposites in environmental and health biotechnology. In particular, her research focuses on exploiting the functional properties of nanomaterials and bio-material interfaces for various engineering applications. She has received ~2.5 crore funding through several externally funded projects from DST, AICTE, VTU and VGST. She has published over 80 research papers in International journals, conference proceedings and 8 book chapters. She also serves as reviewer for several international journals. She has guided many research scholars for Ph.D. and M. Tech. research projects.
  • She is recipient of prestigious "Career Award for Young Teachers" by AICTE in 2010, a final shortlisted candidate for INAE Young Engineer Award in 2009, recipient of INSA Summer Fellowship in 2009. She is also recipient of “Award for Excellence in Research - 2019” from Ramaiah Institute of Technology.
