thesis international management

International Management

The Master’s thesis is an important part of your Master's Programme. The thesis is written individually and in English.

Below you can find information about the time schedule and deadlines, the regulations, the U.S.E. thesis award, and some tips.

Time schedule

Kick-off event for each master programme is organized, usually between 16 and 30 November, but deviations are possible. You will be informed about

  • Potential thesis topics
  • Potential supervisors and second readers
  • Guidelines in case you want to propose your own topic
  • Opportunities for a research internship in combination with your thesis

Matchmaking with your supervisor and the second reader takes place in December-January. The second reader will be involved in the process to (i) to grade and provide feedback on the research proposal and set up of the thesis, and (ii) read and independently grade the final manuscript. Grades for both will be based on the independent assessments of the supervisor and second reader; the supervisor consults with the second reader to establish a final grade that will be made available to the student.

Period 3 (5 EC)

Research proposal. At the end of period 3 you are supposed to have written a full research proposal. This implies you have done extensive literature research, addressed a research gap, drafted research questions, and develop a plan for empirical data analysis. You are usually also supposed to have collected the empirical  material for your thesis, or at minimum, developed a plan for data collection.

You present and/or discuss your draft research proposal with your supervisor and second reader.

Deadline to upload your research proposal via Osiris Case. The proposal will be graded (weight 10%). If you upload the research proposal too late, or not at all, the research proposal will be graded with a 1. When your progress is insufficient at this point, you will have to put in substantial extra effort in period 4 to be able to finish your thesis in time.

Deadline for supervisor (including consultation with second reader, resulting in the final grade) to finish the assessment in Osiris Case.

Period 4 (10 EC)

Develop and finalise thesis. You collect remaining data and literature, analyse data, and write your thesis.

June  17-21

You present and/or discuss your draft thesis in a meeting or final seminar organized by your supervisor and second reader, and receive final comments.

Deadline to upload the final version of your thesis in Osiris Case. The thesis will be graded (weight 90%).

Deadline for supervisor to finish the assessment (including consultation with second reader, resulting in the final grade) in Osiris Case.

Number of meetings

The thesis process has at least four compulsory meetings/deadlines:

  • April 8-11: discuss your draft research proposal and full literature review
  • April 12: hand in your final resarch proposal and full literature review online via Osiris Case. Specific instructions will be supplied on Blackboard. Concerning the literature review, consider coverage of at least 20 relevant academic papers as a reference point. However, your supervisor may set other expectations during the process.
  • June 17-21: present/discuss your draft thesis
  • June 28: hand in your final thesis online via Osiris Case (specific instructions will be supplied)

Theses need to be handed in via OSIRIS Student  (tab Cases > Thesis Assessment (U.S.E.)) to the thesis supervisor and second reader. The supervisor checks the thesis on plagiarism, grades it, and digitally fills in the two evaluation forms ( evaluation form 10% and evaluation form 90% ). You can check the evaluation forms in OSIRIS Student  (after your supervisor finalises the assessment and determined the grade in Osiris).

  • For your research proposal no retake is possible.

For your master thesis , a retake is possible. Conditions:

  • Your unrounded final score (10%*proposal + 90%*thesis) is less than 5.5, but at least 4.0.
  • Your supervisor will provide you with feedback/guidance of what to improve, but only once. Afterwards no additional feedback or guidance can be claimed from the supervisor (holiday season).
  • You can resubmit your master thesis only once.
  • The deadline to upload your revised thesis is August 4, after which the grade will be handed in by the supervisor at the latest by August 18.
  • The rounded final grade for the thesis cannot be higher than a 6; this is only to be fair to students finishing in shorter time.

In case you do not succeed in finishing your thesis with a passing grade in semester 2, including the retake opportunity, you can consult the study advisor and submit a request to redo the thesis with a new topic and supervisor in period 1+2 of the next academic year if you think the following requirements apply:

  • You have worked on the thesis in the regular period, but did not receive a passing grade.
  • You have put in enough effort. The thesis evaluation form, including the written feedback by your supervisor, serves as the basis for this and your thesis grade is at least 4.
  • You have finished all other courses of your master programme.

The request needs to be made ultimately on September 15 (or when this is a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before September 15). The study advisor will contact the Board of Examiners (BoE). The BoE takes the final decision.

If your unrounded final grade is less than 4.0, no retake is possible. You will have to enroll again, and start with a new topic and supervisor in November 2024. Thus, you will then develop a new thesis in period 3 and 4 of the academic year 2024/25.

In some circumstances the July deadline may be extended. See ‘Regulations’ (hereafter).

U.S.E. thesis regulations Academic Masters 2022-2023

  • All theses must be written and finished within semester 2.
  • All theses will be checked on plagiarism.
  • In agreement with the second supervisor, the thesis supervisor will determine the final grade and fill in the Thesis Evaluation Form, which is then presented to you.
  • The supervisor grades the thesis within 10 working days from receiving the material, and makes sure the results are processed administratively. Deadline to hand in final versions of the thesis to the supervisor and co-reader is June 30th . Deadline for supervisor to hand in the thesis grade is July 14th .
  • In case of special personal circumstances, the Board of Examiners may grant a postponement of the deadline, following consultation with the MSc coordinator.
  • When you have stopped working on your thesis during semester 2 for other reasons than special personal circumstances, or do not hand in your thesis on time, or when you receive an insufficient grade, you will have to start again in the next academic year (at the kick-off event in November), with a new thesis subject and new supervisor, unless the requirements mentioned under 10 apply.
  • You can resubmit your master thesis only once .
  • The deadline to hand in your revised thesis is August 9th, after which the grade will be handed in by the supervisor at the latest by August 18th .
  • If your unrounded final grade is less than 4.0, no retake is possible. You will have to subscribe again, and start with a new topic and supervisor in November 2023 . Thus, you will then develop a new thesis in period 3 and 4 of the academic year 2023/24 .
  • You have put in enough effort . The thesis evaluation form, including the written feedback by your supervisor, serves as the basis for this and your thesis grade is at least 4.
  • The request needs to be made ultimately on September 15 (or when this is a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before September 15 ). The study advisor will contact the Board of Examiners (BoE). The BoE takes the final decision.
  • In addition to the cum laude classification in art. 6.2 of the Education and Examination Regulations: if you do an external research in combination with your thesis and this prevents you to graduate in one year, and as a consequence you do not qualify for a cum laude graduation, the Board of Examiners may apply a special (leniency) regulation.

Publish your thesis

It is not mandatory, but we recommend you submit your thesis to the Students Theses Archive .

Thesis award

U.S.E. Master’s Thesis Award

Each year, Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) chooses the top Master's theses from each of the 1-year MSc programmes. These theses are recognised with the  U.S.E. Master's Thesis Award . The winning theses need to be written and completed in semester 2 and are chosen for their relevance, academic merit, and particularly for their integration of a ‘real world perspective’ into an economics issue. Furthermore, the submitted thesis must have received a mark of at least an 8.5. Out of these ‘best-in-programme’ theses, the one thesis that stands out most receives additional accolades. The authors of the winning theses are awarded with a certificate during the Master’s Graduation ceremony.

UU Best Master’s Thesis

Utrecht University awards a prize for the best Master's thesis written at the University. It is awarded every year during the opening of the new academic year. The winner will receive an award which consists of a certificate and €1,500. Nominees need to meet certain criteria. The submitted graduate thesis or research must have received a mark of at least an 8.5 for instance. U.S.E. strives to select and submit one candidate each year. More information can be found on the university website .

Research Data Management

When you write a thesis, you are dealing with Research Data Management: processing data and possibly also personal data, for example when you conduct interviews. In the latter case, you are then dealing with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You also need to secure your data properly at all times. It is therefore important that you know what you have to comply with in terms of legislation and university frameworks. Please figure this out before you start writing your thesis. Your thesis supervisor can help you with this, ask for the guidelines. More information can be found on the following websites:

Chair for International Management

Master Theses

To complete the Master of Arts in International and European Business, students have to write a master thesis in English. The master thesis has to be written in connection to one of the courses taken within the program. Generally, any professor who offers courses that can be accredited towards the MA in International and European Business can supervise master theses in the program. The Chair for International Management offers to supervise master theses. It is generally a prerequisite that a student who intends to write her/his master thesis at the Chair for International Management has successfully participated in at least one of the courses offered by the chair.

  • In general, the master thesis counts for 18 ECTS and has a writing phase of 7 months (2 months for the proposal acceptance and 5 for the thesis writing)

Different approaches are possible:

  • Students can submit a provisional research proposal for a specific topic that they wish to analyze in their master thesis. Obviously, the topics have to be related to the fields of International Management and/or European Business – possibly discussed in one of the lectures. In this case, the provisional proposal is evaluated, and if the chair agrees, the student can work under the guidance of the chair to develop a full proposal which is then the starting point for the master thesis.
  • Students may adopt a research topic suggested by the chair. In this case they should contact the chair first to discuss some ideas in order to facilitate the process of developing a provisional/final proposal.

Simultaneously with the provisional proposal or the first contact with the chair, students have to provide the chair with a list of their grades and a short CV. Regarding the supervision the chair does not guarantee a specific supervisor, therefore you can be allocated to any of the chair’s employees according to their availability.

  • The proposal should be a short paper (ca. 3 pages) including:
  • A short introduction with the relevance of the topic
  • The main questions (research question(s)) to be answered
  • The planned methodology (e.g. is it planned to do expert interviews, is it planned to carry out a large-scale empirical survey, etc.)
  • A short literature review of the topic
  • A (provisional) table of contents

The proposal should already use relevant academic sources and the chair`s template. In addition to that, citations should be according to the chair’s guidelines. After the first meeting and the official acceptance of the supervision of the thesis by the chair, the student has 2 moths for the acceptance of the proposal by the chair.

After acceptance of the proposal, the student generally has 5 months for the master thesis, a time during which consultation hours by the chair are offered upon request of the students. Students may be invited to present the status of their thesis and their ideas within a colloquium with other master students.

Master theses have to be written following the formal guidelines of the chair, which can be downloaded here. To facilitate the application, we highly recommend using the MS-word template that we provide and that you can download here.

Guidelines for Papers and Theses

Template for Papers and Theses

Types of Master Theses

Generally, three types of master theses are possible at the chair:

  • Empirical research oriented theses:  Students intend to finish a research project by themselves which includes an empirical survey, e.g. of companies or of consumers, and the necessary statistical analyses. Generally, the first part of such a master thesis has to contain a thorough review of the existing literature and previous studies on the topic. Then, a conceptual framework and the basis for a questionnaire have to be developed and finally the empirical study results have to be discussed.
  • State of the art oriented theses:  Students analyse systematically and thoroughly the existing (high-level) literature concerning a specific topic and explain the state-of-the-art as well as existing research gaps.
  • Practice-oriented theses: Students who intend to work closely with a specific company for the preparation of their master thesis, e.g. in the context of an internship, write about a specific problem of this company and analyse potential problem solutions. Alternatively, the specific situation in an industry can be analysed using one or several case studies from within the industry as empirical foundation.  However, it has to be emphasised that a master thesis is still an analytic – and not merely a descriptive – work which is based on a theoretical and conceptual foundation and has to fulfil a high academic standard. Even in the case of a practice-oriented master thesis, it is not a consulting paper for a company.

Selection of topics for Master theses

Below you will find a list of topics that the Chair proposes as Master theses:

  • Lifecycle Models of International Alliances
  • Which models with which stages have been proposed in literature? What are their advantages/disadvantages? How do they compare to each other? Is there a model that becomes standard?
  • Internationalisation and Digitalization of Manufacturers’ Services – An analysis of the options of manufacturers to provide their services cross-border
  • State-of-the-art: What has literature shown about that? Which categorisations of services are proposed in literature? Are there already insights on the advantages/disadvantages of the different forms of providing digital services across borders?
  • ”Retail Media” – Options and challenges
  • In recent years, retail companies have started to create additional revenue streams for themselves by giving brand companies and others access to their channels, for example, to digital screens instore, or to position advertising on their websites (e.g., Amazon). This may be strategically highly relevant in the future but also bears challenges (e.g., about data protection). This new field should be analysed about potential effects, benefits, options and challenges.
  • Re-entry in Foreign Markets – How does the financial situation of the parent company influence the re-entry decision of the company in foreign markets?
  • Here, companies that previously exited a foreign market and then re-entered after a certain time, are to be analysed.
  • Re-entry in Foreign Markets – How does the institutional environment influence the performance outcome of a re-entry?
  • Re-entry in Foreign Markets – Do firms re-enter faster in closer (cultural/geographical/economical/administrative) markets?
  • Re-entry in Foreign Markets – Does a change in joint venture partner lead to a better performance outcome of a re-entry?
  • Business Models and Internationalisation – A state-of-the-Art analysis
  • State-of-the-Art: What has been found in existing literature and previous studies? How does the Business Model of a Company Influence the Internationalization?
  • Business Models and Internationalisation – Analysing case studies
  • How does the Business Model of a Company Influence the Internationalization? Use several case studies to show how certain elements of the business model are linked to certain internationalisation strategies (e.g., how fast the company internationalizes, or which entry modes are used).

Important Notes:

As a management student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing management theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The management field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like operations management , business , business administration , MBA , human resource management and more. That is why creating a management dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Cultural Diplomacy and Transnational Heritage: Toward Suitable Management of The Apse of San Martín de Fuentidueña in Spain and the United States

Balbuena Lorenzo, Blanca del Pilar

In the past decade, there has been a shift in sensitivity towards the interaction of artifacts with their environment, their movement, transformation, and permanence over time and space. Instances of artifacts undergoing traumatic displacements, separating them from their origins, have prompted inquiries into questions of identity, historical authenticity, and rightful ownership. This research delves into the intricate landscape of cultural heritage subjected to significant cultural and geographic dislocations, with a particular focus on the case of the apse of San Martín de Fuentidueña. Transferred under a "Long-Term Loan" agreement in 1959 from Fuentidueña, Spain, to The Cloisters in New York, the apse's relocation raised profound concerns about cultural identity and heritage preservation. Although he Church of San Martín being designated a National Monument, prohibiting its export, the apse was moved to the United States after decades of negotiations. This historical event left Fuentidueña bereft of an important part of its cultural legacy. Despite remaining under Spain's ownership, relations between the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Spanish Ministry of Culture have deteriorated, posing challenges for effective decision-making regarding the apse's preservation. The primary objective of this research is to develop a renewed multilateral management framework aimed at addressing past injustices and enhancing transnational relations between the Met and the Spanish Ministry of Culture. This model encompasses legal, financial, technological, and community-oriented aspects, emphasizing local perspectives and stakeholder participation in decision-making processes. The investigation contextualizes the historical circumstances surrounding the apse's transfer and critically examines the legal framework established by the transfer agreement. It evaluates the current state of the apse at the Met and its original site in Fuentidueña, illuminating successful conservation strategies and challenges arising from the existing legal framework. An integral aspect of the proposed management framework entails investigating the feasibility of replicating the apse in its original setting in Fuentidueña. To deepen the understanding of the injustices perceived within the village and to enrich the development of the replica, interviews and questionnaires were conducted among the inhabitants. This endeavor not only seeks to address historical grievances but also acts as a conduit for bolstering international relations between the two nations, emphasizing cultural diplomacy and fostering a positive image. To develop the proposal, extensive research was conducted on past negotiations, utilizing correspondence between the two countries found in archival materials, both in New York and Spain. The complex dismantling and reconstruction process, overseen by architect Alejandro Ferrant, is also documented using photographs, videos, and original plans. By examining the case of the apse of San Martín de Fuentidueña, this thesis contributes to the field of preservation by shedding light on the implications of transferring cultural heritage fragments, and offering recommendations for the future management of transnational cultural heritage, stressing the importance of international collaboration in safeguarding shared historical legacies.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The Black Keys Quietly Cancel International Players Tour 2024

The Black Keys have quietly canceled their upcoming International Players Tour, which was scheduled to bring them to arenas throughout North America.

The tour, announced in early April, was scheduled to kick off in September, with dates set for New York City’s Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles’ Kia Forum. The 31-date trek would have brought them across North America, with stops planned in Seattle, Boston and Milwaukee before concluding at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on Nov. 12. All dates have been marked as canceled on Ticketmaster’s website.

On the Black Keys’ website, tour dates have been scrubbed with the exception of a sole performance still scheduled for July 6 at NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race.

Management and publicity for the Black Keys did not respond to Variety ‘s requests for comment.

After news broke on Saturday that the tour had been canceled, the group posted on Instagram explaining that they had to reconfigure their tour to bring a similarly “exciting, intimate experience” for fans and that tickets for the original trek would be refunded in full.

“The band wants to assure everyone that Dan & Patrick are alive and well,” reads the caption. “Following the recent run of shows in the UK & Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly.

Everyone who had purchased tickets and/or VIP to the initial tour dates will be fully refunded – and when the new plans are announced, will be the first to be able to buy tickets. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for the surprise change… We're pretty sure everyone is going to be excited when you see what we have in mind though, and look forward to seeing everyone soon.”

The Black Keys, which consists of Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, were set to kick off the tour in support of their most recent album “Ohio Players,” which released in April. On Wednesday, the pair appeared on NBC’s “The Voice,” where they performed “Beautiful People (Stay High).”

The band also recently debuted the documentary “This Is a Film About the Black Keys,” which had its world premiere at SXSW last month. The film explored the historical tensions between the bandmates as well as what united them. "We've figured each other out, for the most part,” said Auerbach in the doc. “We're just two very opinionated, hard-headed people, trapped for eternity together."

Law Firms’ Embrace of Non-Equity Partners Brings Management Risk

By Meghan Tribe

Meghan Tribe

The explosive growth in non-equity partners is forcing law firm leaders to change how they manage their operations to avoid harming long-term financial goals.

The non-equity tier has become a preferred method for firms to retain talent and boost profitability. Growth of the class gained steam during the pandemic when law firms were exceptionally busy and wanted to hang on to lawyers who could do work at high levels.

Eighty-five of the 100 largest law firms by revenue have non-equity tiers, and 70 of those have increased in size since 2021, according to American Lawyer data. By next year, there will likely be more non-equity partners than equity partners among the top 100 firms.

WATCH: Law firm partners earn a lot of money, but just how much they make can vary widely. Whether it’s equity or non-equity or a merit system versus lockstep, this video explains what determines the size of those paychecks at elite law firms.

The growth has brought about questions as to how firms motivate and reward performance without the incentive of possibly millions of dollars in equity payouts. The non-equity tier has become so crucial to firm operations that managing it well largely dictates the overall operation’s success.

Law firms must develop cultures of rigorous accountability to make non-equity partnerships work, said John Morley, a Yale Law School professor. That is “deeply in tension” with the almost familial connections firms want to have, though it’s the only way the non-equity tier is effective, he said.

Seyfarth Shaw is “very disciplined” to make sure non-equity partners have the same quality and work ethic as those who take home a profit share, said Lorie Almon, the firm’s chair and managing partner. “We don’t dampen the standards in any way,” she said.

Business Case

The business case for adopting a non-equity tier is straightforward. The class helps firms keep young talent who gain the title of partner and can bill clients at higher rates than junior associates.

Firm leaders get the benefit of keeping non-equity partners out of the group that draws profit checks, meaning there’s more cash for the people at the top. It thus becomes easier for firms to grow profits per partner, a metric the industry uses as a barometer of overall success.

The danger is that firms fail to manage their non-equity tier properly, said Bruce MacEwen, president of law firm consultancy Adam Smith, Esq. Firms in those situations are saddled with “the least hard-working bunch of lawyers—they bill the fewest hours consistently,” he said.

A 2023 report by Reuters found that nonequity partners typically billed between seven and 11 fewer hours per lawyer per month than equity partners, translating into a sizable gap in revenue.

A non-equity partner tier needs to be managed gingerly, said Michael McKenney, a senior client adviser in Citi’s law firm group. Firms sometimes find that associates are a better bargain, he said.

“Oftentimes it is very difficult to get the same level of contribution out of the income partner as you do from your seasoned associate,” McKenney said. “The expense per lawyer number gets out of whack.”

Law firms such as Kirkland & Ellis and Paul Weiss have developed “star-driven models” with immensely productive partners at the top who are capable of employing large teams of more junior lawyers in the middle and at the bottom, Morley said. “But if you don’t have that, then this model doesn’t work as well,” he said.

Kirkland successfully manages its non-equity tier by carefully monitoring productivity and then moving out the least productive partners—even leveraging its alumni network to find landing spots for them, MacEwen said.

Some law firms demote people from the equity partner tier to the non-equity class as a way to boost their profits per equity partner number, according to a person familiar with the industry who requested anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic. The person declined to publicly identify examples of such firms.

“It is becoming more difficult to graduate, if you will, into the equity tiers of many firms,” said Jennifer Henderson, a co-founder and partner at legal recruiting firm Hatch Henderson Fivel. “A lot of that has to do with firms increasingly focused on their profits per partner number,” she said.

Of the 85 firms that have non-equity tiers, only 15 increased the size of their equity partnerships since 2021, according to American Lawyer data. Only two—Kirkland and Seyfarth Shaw—have increased the size of both tiers.

The average profits per equity partner at the 100 largest firms grew more than 5% in 2023 compared with from 2022, a Wells Fargo & Co. survey found. Simpson Thacher confirmed this month it would pay its top partners more than $20 million a year.

A reason for big firms’ push to grow the non-equity tier is to keep pace with their largest rival, Kirkland. That tier, with over 900 lawyers, has been an important engine in the firm’s meteoric financial success. Kirkland brought in just over $7.2 billion in revenue in 2023, 24% more than its closest competitor, Latham & Watkins.

“Kirkland & Ellis is the 800-pound gorilla that is breaking everybody else’s business model,” Morley said. “They found that offering the title of partner was a very effective recruiting tool, even when it didn’t come with equity attached.”

Paul Weiss confirmed earlier this year it had added non-equity partners, and Cravath Swaine & Moore adopted the approach in late 2021. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, along with Willkie Farr & Gallagher, created non-equity tiers in 2019.

Kirkland, Holland & Knight, Goodwin Procter, Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Wilson Sonsini have grown non-equity partnerships by 25% or more since 2018. Even among firms that have not yet added a non-equity class, “most of them are at least discussing it,” said Lauren Drake, a recruiter for Macrae.
