Hamlet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare and tells the story of a young prince of Denmark, Prince Hamlet, who has returned home from school to mourn the death of his father, the King of Denmark, who had died two months earlier. Back home, Hamlet is disgusted to find that his mother has already remarried his uncle, who has now declared himself as the king. The ghost of the King of Denmark then appears to Prince Hamlet, revealing that he was murdered by Hamlet’s mother and uncle. The King’s ghost then asks his son to avenge his murder by killing the new king. Hamlet then plots to seek revenge, but in his obsession drives the woman he loves, Ophelia, to madness and eventual suicide and even kills her innocent father. His uncle, in turn, also plots to kill him. The play ends with a duel between Hamlet and Ophelia’s brother, during which, Hamlet, Ophelia’s brother, the King, and the Queen, are all killed.

Class 12 and 11| How to write a summary | with example

Hello scholars, in this article I'm going to explain   how to write a summary?   But before that let's understand what the summary is and its importance?

  • Summary Writing

Maharashtra state board Class 12th and 11th English: Writing Skills

How to write summary

What does summary writing mean?

Importance of summarizing: .

Simple steps for summary writing:

 skimming:.

While reading the extract the first time you have to skim the text. Now,  what does skimming mean?  Skimming means running your eyes on the text to quickly know the central idea of the text. Don't go too deep just try to grasp the key point. A minute is sufficient for that.

Let's understand with an example-

Writing summary example

While reading the text a second time you have to scan the text. Scanning means running through the text with some questions. While scanning, ask the questions yourself like what it is about?  What are the details given in each paragraph? What is unnecessary in particular paragraphs, like examples, descriptions, details, such as dates, numbers or statistics, etc.? What should be the appropriate title? Then, while scanning underlines the keywords. It will be helpful in your next step.  you can note it down on the last page of answer sheets or in the margins of question paper with a pencil.

Let's apply this to the above example-

Summary writing Scanning a text example

Drafting a summary:

Tips for drafting a summary:.

  • You can combine one or two sentences so that you get shorter sentences.
  • Use one word for several words.
  • Don't just copy-paste the content. Try to rephrase it.
  • Omit all the examples, illustrations, quotations, figures of speech, any ornamental language from the original text.
  • The most important thing I observed in my teaching career that generally students do is adding their own interpretation or opinion in summary. Don't do this. The summary should be a reflection of the original text but in brief.
  • Don't use any abbreviations to shorten the text.
  • Avoid the repetition of the words.

Title:

Giving a suitable title to the summarized text is important. To find a suitable title  Identify repetitions. If certain words are repeated throughout the text, it means the whole paragraph is related to that word.

Final Drafting:

Now your summary is ready. Just recheck that have you missed any important points from the original text?   Likewise, read your summary and check that your summary flows well. It should not feel like you dumped a bunch of sentences in one para to make it short. It should have a proper sense. So that purpose linking words will be helpful to you.

Summary of the above example

Communication is a part of our everyday life. like us Animals, too interact with one another via a verbal or non-verbal method. Singing is one of them. Male blackbirds sing a song to attract the females and to keep away other blackbirds from their territory. Sea mammals, whales groan and grunt, dolphins, and porpoises produce pings, whistles, and clicks to communicate with other mates.

We summarise the text. Let's see what changes we made here.

' Singing is one way in which animals can interact with one another.'

' Male blackbirds often use their melodious songs to catch the attention of the females. These songs are usually rich in note variation, encoding various kinds of messages. Songs are also used to warn and keep off other blackbirds from their territory, usually a place where they dwell and reproduce. '

important summary for hsc 2024

1. Unit-1, Lesson-1 My brothers, The Assembly has been called into session on the 25th of March. But the blood spilled on our streets has not yet dried. About the 10th of this month, I have told them: Mujibur Rahman won’t join the Round Table Conference because that would mean wading over the blood that has been shed. Although you have called the Assembly into session, you’ll have to listen to my demands first.

You’ll have to withdraw Martial Law. You’ll have to return all army personnel to their barracks. You’ll have to investigate the way our people have been murdered. And you’ll have to transfer power to the representatives of the people. It is only then that I’ll decide whether we will take our seats in the Assembly or not. I don’t want the Prime Minister’s office. We want the people of this country to have their rights. I want to state clearly that from this day Bangladesh’s courts, magistracies, government offices and educational institutions will be shut down indefinitely.

Remember: since we have already had to shed blood, we’ll have to shed a lot more ofit; by the Grace of God, however, we’ll be able to liberate the people ofthis land. The struggle this time is a struggle forfreedom-the struggle this time is a struggle for emancipation. Long live Bengal!

Summary: The speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman 7 March reshaped the history of Bangladesh. Bangabandhu made a clear focus on the total independence of this land throughout his golden speech. The Pakistani rulling machine converted this land into a crimson shade of blood for 23 years.

They deprived us politically, economically, culturally and in every sector of national and international perspectives. Through this speech, the people of the country had got the final directive on how they should act with the autocratic Pakistani junta. This vigorous speech encouraged our people to prepare for the War of Independence.

Chances are that you’ve often found yourself puzzling over the content of a dream, or perhaps you’ve wondered why you dream at all.

First, let’s start by answering a basic question: What is a dream? A dream can include any of the images, thoughts and emotions that are experienced during sleep. Dreams can be extraordinarily vivid or very vague; filled with joyful emotions or frightening images; focused and understandable or unclear and confusing. Why do we dream? What purpose do dreams serve? While many theories have been proposed, no consensus has emerged.

Considering the time we spend in a dreaming state, the fact that researchers do not yet understand the purpose of dreams may seem baffling. However, it is important to consider that science is still unraveling the exact purpose and function of sleep itself. Some researchers suggest that dreams serve no real purpose, while others believe that dreaming is essential to mental, emotional and physical well-being.

Summary: The text is about dreams introducing its causes and purposes along with some prominent dream theories. Dream is a representation of unconscious wishes, thoughts and imaginations. Dream may be sweet or horrible. But dream has also a real purpose if it is related to mental, emotional and physical well-being. The main benefit of dream is that it produces new ideas and thoughts in brain and helps to clean up clutter from mind. But researchers don’t yet understand the purpose clearly and science is trying to unravel it.

3. Unit-4, Lesson-1 As a child you must have been told to greet your elders and visitors to your home according to your culture and tradition. You must also have been taught to be polite in company and keep quiet while others, especially your elders, spoke. Possibly, you at times grudged such schooling.

Possibly, at times you even protested such disciplining. Now, certainly you know that you can’t always behave the way you want specially in the presence of others. There are rules of behaviour you have to follow in a company. We are social beings and have to consider the effect of our behaviour on others, even if we are at home in dealing with our family members.

We have two terms to describe our social behaviour – ‘etiquette’ and ‘manners ‘Etiquette’ is a French word and it means the rules of correct behaviour in society. The word ‘manners’ means the behaviour that is considered to be polite in a particular society or culture. Manners can be good or bad. For example, it is a bad manner to speak with food in one’s mouth. No one likes a bad-mannered person. Remember that etiquette and manners vary from culture to culture and from society to society.

We learn etiquette and manners from our parents, families and various institutions, such as schools, colleges or professional bodies. There are rules of behaviour for all kinds of social occasions and it is important to learn them and practise them in everyday life. The manners that are correct in a wedding reception will not do in a debating club. Therefore, we have to be careful about etiquette and manners. We know how important it is to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ in everyday life. A few more polite expressions such as ‘pardon me,’ ‘excuse me,’ ‘may 1,’ are bound to make your day smooth and pleasant.

Summary: This text is written about etiquette and manners of human beings in everyday life. ‘Etiquette’ means the formal rules of correct behaviour in a society. The word ‘manners’ means the behaviour, considered to be polite in a particular society or culture. As the children are the future leaders, they have to be brought up by instructing correct etiquette and manners from their childhood on the basis of place, time and persons. Besides, we have to be careful about learning and practicing etiquette and manners in our everyday life.

4. Unit-6, Lesson-2 Adolescents constitute a nation’s core resource for national renewal and growth. Adolescence is a period in life when transtition from childhood to adulthood takes place and behaviours and lifestyles are shaped. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), adolescence is the period which shapes the future of girls and boys’ lives.

There are 28 million adolescents in Bangladesh; 13.7 million of them are girls and 14.3 million boys. The situation of adolescent girls in Bangladesh is marginalization by inequality and subordination within the family and society. This inequality leads to widespread practice of child marriage, marginalization or exclusion from health, education and economic opportunities, and vulnerability to violence and sexual abuse.

In Bangladesh, the legal age of marriage is 18 for girls and 21 for boys. However, 33 Percent of adolescent girls are married before the age of 15 and 60 become mothers by the age of 19. Research finds that adolescents with higher level of education and from more affluent families tend to marry at a later age. Boys, however, become ready for marriage only after several years of adolescence and young adulthood.

Summary: The lesson is about some typical health problems experienced by adolescent girls and boys. When a girl is married off at an early age, she is tortured and abused for dowry even after the marriage. When an adolescent girl is pulled out of school, she loses her mobility, friends and social status. As a result, she is deprived of basic knowledge like health issue. So, they are vulnerable to deadly diseases. On the other hand, the situation of adolescent boys is somewhat better. But still they are vulnerable to being drawn into criminal activities, drugs and alcohol.

5. Unit-6, Lesson-3 Children’s right to education also implies that the school they go to will have a pleasant and learning-friendly environment where everyone will have an enjoyable time. Teachers will be kind, caring and supportive and children will feel relaxed. No harsh words will be spoken to them and special care will be taken of children with learning disabilities.

That, unfortunately is not the general picture in our schools. The system of education in our part of the world does not allow children much freedom and classrooms look more like cages where they are pent up for hours. Rabindranath Tagore found it unacceptable; so did William Blake, an English poet and painter, whose favourite subjects included children. In his school where dour-faced teachers give joyless lessons. He would rather like to be outdoors and enjoy the summer day. He pleads with his parents to rescue him from the drudgery of school.

Summary: The text is about the suitable environment of schools that will have a pleasant and learning friendly where children will have an enjoyable time. The teacher should be kind, supportive and caring. But unfortunately the environment of our school are not like that. There classroom look more like cages and they are not provided with freedom. So, they want to escape from such schooling.

For your guidance, I’ve provided recommended answers to each of the summary writing exercises. You should try to answer the questions in your own words after checking these model summary answers

We can now start the summary writing exercises with the first passage. It is about why one needs to hire the services of a personal injury attorney after a car accident.

Summary Exercise 1

Read the following passage on hiring a car insurance attorney carefully and answer the questions that follow.

SUMMARY PASSAGE ON WHEN TO HIRE A CAR INSURANCE ATTORNEY

The decision to hire a car insurance attorney after a car accident has never been an easy one. This is because most car accident victims have little knowledge regarding when it is necessary to hire the services of a lawyer after a car accident.

According to AllLaw.com, one of the most respected legal advice websites in the US, there are very good reasons to hire a a car insurance attorney after a car accident. They insist that allowing an attorney to be in charge of your legal battles with insurance companies and other stakeholders can be the smartest move after you suffered an automobile accident.

Usually, car accidents involving serious or long-term injuries require an attorney to get the most desirable outcome. For this reason, having an experienced and articulate advocate working for you is essential in obtaining a reasonable and fair resolution in your car accident case.

An automobile accident brings with it a host of questions. Who is at fault? Who pays for damage to my car? Who will pay for my medical bills? How much should I get for pain and suffering? Can I ask the insurance company to reimburse me for lost wages? An experienced injury attorney can be extremely helpful in negotiating the often chaotic and confusing world of insurance claims and settlements.

Because most injury attorneys work on a contingent-fee basis, and only get paid if there is a successful resolution to your claim, there is often little incentive to try to handle these types of claims on your own, unless no injuries or serious damage were involved and a settlement would be very small. If you’re injured in a car accident, then hiring a lawyer will almost always ensure a much better settlement.

Hiring a personal injury attorney to represent you after a car accident means you will have a professional working for you — one who is extremely knowledgeable about the relevant laws and procedural rules that may affect your case.

A car insurance attorney can advise you of any time limits (called statutes of limitations) that can bar you from filing a lawsuit against the at-fault driver. For instance, in many states you must file your lawsuit within two years of your car accident or be forever prohibited from filing your lawsuit. An attorney will also be able to inform you about any special exceptions to the statute of limitations — for minors, for example.

Your personal injury attorney can file a lawsuit on your behalf and will know how best to mitigate any possible defenses raised by the other side. In addition, once your case gets under way, your lawyer will play an invaluable role in preparing your case for trial — and even going to trial if your case doesn’t settle.

Even though a lawsuit is rarely necessary, the threat of legal action offers strong leverage when negotiating a fair settlement.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, hiring a car insurance attorney who is knowledgeable about the law evens the playing field, especially when you are going up against the experience and vast resources of a large insurance company.

There is a lot of work that goes into negotiating an insurance settlement and trying a personal injury lawsuit. After you have been in a car accident, taking on this time-consuming work may be the last thing you want to do, assuming you’re able. An attorney can do it all for you.

Whereas this may be your first time dealing with the ins and outs of an accident claim, injury attorneys have dealt with all manner of claims and a variety of insurance companies. They have experience obtaining the necessary evidence to support your claim, including gathering police reports, witness statements, medical records and bills, and employment and lost wage information.

Your personal injury attorney will also be able to organize the evidence and prepare a settlement demand letter for the insurance company. If you are unable to settle your accident case, your attorney can take care of filing the necessary paperwork to start a court case and can deal with the defense attorneys on your behalf. Having someone knowledgeable handling the hard work of your case eases the burden on you, which is especially important if you have been seriously injured and are trying to recover from your injuries.

Perhaps the most important way a car insurance attorney can help you with your car accident case is by being your advocate. This means that your attorney acts on your behalf and for your benefit throughout the entire claims process (negotiating with the automobile insurance company) and even in court if a lawsuit becomes necessary. He or she will be your champion before the judge, jury and other attorneys, making sure that your side of the story is heard and that you are compensated for all of your losses.
