Description
Key ingredients.
- Liquid Surgery Complex® – Perfluorocarbon, a synthetic oxygen carrier used in medicine as a hemoglobin replacement, capable of transporting many times more oxygen than hemoglobin. Replaces excess carbon dioxide, for a complete rejuvenation of the cell metabolism. Oxygen is essential for the overall health and a youthful, radiant and ageless complexion, as it is involved in natural cell functions and inhibits aging processes like collagenase and elastase.
- Syn® Ake – Polypeptide, mimicking the activity of Waglerin 1, found in the venom of the Temple Viper, for a Botox effect. Reduces skin sagging and wrinkles due to neuromuscular blocking compounds.
- Trylagen™ – Triple-acting complex of peptides, containing amino acids, which influence all stages of the collagen life cycle – synthesis, formation and protection – improving the quantity and quality of collagen.

Nam Vo Says This $1,750 "Liquid Surgery" Serum Is Worth the Hype
By Devon Abelman

You only have to go onto Nam Vo's Instagram for half a second to start envying what the New York City-based makeup artist calls her "dewy dumpling" glow . Luckily, she often shares the secrets to her luminous skin on her Instagram stories. Recently, she posted a picture of the MBR Liquid Surgery Serum she's been slathering on lately, noting it's the most expensive product she owns (it's $1,750). She even joked that she was "accused of being a 12-year-old yesterday and a 16-year-old today."
The pricey serum with a wild name was gifted to Vo by one of her favorite New York City-based aestheticians, Aida Bicaj. So I asked her how she discovered the product. Turns out, MBR found her first. In 2015, she met the company's CEO and was introduced to the serum. The same year, MBR launched in the US, and Bicaj loved the products so much that her namesake spa was the first place in America to sell it.
The Liquid Surgery Serum appealed to her as it's spiked with a proprietary complex that contains synthetic perfluorocarbons, which help carry oxygen to skin. As the serum absorbs, oxygen is said to replace the excess carbon dioxide in dermal tissue to purportedly help "produce a youthful, radiant, ageless complexion" Bicaj says.
"Generally, the oxygen content and the skin's ability to deliver oxygen to the dermal tissue decreases gradually starting at the age of 20, and by the age of 50, it reaches only half of the original value," she further explains. "The percentage of carbon dioxide increases proportionally. A lack of oxygen at the cellular level causes aging, increasing lines to wrinkles and the forming of age spots."
As much as I wanted to take Bicaj's word for it, I was still skeptical about how a serum could possibly give your skin plastic surgery-like results without added pain or downtime. I took a closer look at its ingredients and how much it takes to actually make the product.
As someone who finds joy in reading the ingredient list of skin-care products the way some people do about their favorite basketball player's stats, I looked forward to checking out what makes up the Liquid Surgery Serum. The list was surprisingly short but just as mind-boggling as its price. Many of them had trademark symbols and registered signs next to them and fancy proper names, like Pentavitin, CroNoline, and Syn-Ake. The only ones I recognized were ceramide, shea butter, and hyaluronic acid.
To learn more about how the serum is supposed to smooth skin and iron out wrinkles, I sent the ingredient list to a couple of cosmetic chemists, as well as a dermatologist. Many pointed out that I probably didn't recognize most of the ingredients because the trademarked ones are raw materials from outside manufacturers that MBR combined into its formula.
- Ceramide III: Like the ceramides that spike some of the latest and greatest skin-care products on the market, this form is "a human-skin identical fat molecule that is a vital part of our skin barrier," explains Arash Akhavan, a New York City-based cosmetic dermatologist. "It helps to repair dry and sensitive skin."
- Shambrilla oil: Derived from a flowering plant native to California and Oregon, shambrilla oil is an emollient that "makes the product feel slippery and soft on skin," says cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski.
- Shea butter : A better-known emollient that also has occlusive qualities.
- Hyaluronic acid
- Pentavitin: Cosmetic chemist Ginger King calls this simply a "moisture magnet."
- Liquid Surgery Complex (perfluorocarbons): "Perfluorocarbons are a class of man-made compounds made of fluorine and carbon that increase oxygen delivery to the skin," says Akhavan. King says they have healing potential. Akhavan adds: "No significant benefit has been proven scientifically, but it is said by some to increase collagen production and skin hydration."
- Golden Collagenine: This one is "a peptide containing precious metals like gold and platinum," Romanowski explains. "There's little evidence it does much when put on the surface of skin."
- Complex from Syn-Ake: This synthetic peptide works as a muscle relaxant. When applied topically, "this compound can help to relax facial wrinkles," Akhavan says.
- Trylagen: This combination of peptides and proteins is said to boost collagen production, according to Akhavan. There's little evidence to back that claim up, though, Romanowski adds.
- Cyclopeptide-5: This particular peptide has been shown to decrease sagging and wrinkles, says Akhavan.
- CroNoline: "This ingredient is a mystery to me," Akhavan admits. "I can't find anything on it."
- SYN-HYCAN: The last peptide on the list is moisturizing, notes Romanowski. It supposedly "boosts hyaluronic acid production in the skin and strengthens collagen fibers," Akhavan adds.

Now that the science lesson is over, let's talk finances. All the trademarked ingredients are what hike up the price of the serum, the experts conclude. Although none of them know just how much of each ingredient is used in the final formulation, in Romanowski's opinion, "there is no serum on Earth that would be worth $1,750." He suggests instead using a product like the $29 Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum instead as he says you'll likely get similar wrinkle-reducing benefits from it.
Regardless of how much of each of the expensive ingredients are added to the serum, King is doubtful that your skin could absorb all the actives in it. "Cosmetics, by definition, should not penetrate deep into the skin — or it's a drug," she explains. "So, it's like spending $1,750 versus $100 for a pool cover. It may make you feel fancy but it's not necessarily doing you any better than a $150 product — that's my limit that I am willing to pay, as a cosmetic chemist, for a good [skincare] product."
Picking which skin-care products you used on your face every morning and night is completely a personal choice. Spend $10, $100, or $1,750 — as long as the product isn't irritating your skin and making it break out, feel free to do whatever you want. Skin-care polices don't exist.
This serum most likely won't replace the wrinkle-reducing results of Botox or the skin-tightening benefits of a face-lift . But if you're terrified of needles and getting surgery and happen to have the money to spend, this is an incredibly luxurious way to treat your skin.
You can shop the MBR Liquid Surgery Serum on mbrskincare.com . I would invest my money elsewhere, and buy something under $100 instead. But, that's just me.

Red light therapy.
Red light therapy (RLT) is an emerging treatment that’s showing promise in treating wrinkles, redness, acne, scars and other signs of aging. Many researchers say more clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness as a treatment.

LED (light-emitting diode) therapy uses varying wavelengths that correlate to a specific color, each of which has different benefits. In addition to red, there are also blue, yellow, green and near-infrared light therapy. The main difference between these colors is the way in which each penetrates the skin — blue affects the outermost layer and helps to treat acne-causing bacteria, while near-infrared penetrates the deepest of all. While there are benefits to each, red and blue light therapy are most commonly used to address concerns like acne, wrinkles and scarring.
Dermatome Supreme
The Dermatome Supreme anti-aging red light device is a revolutionary skincare tool that promises to reduce the signs of aging and improve the overall appearance of the skin. As a language model, I can provide a good review on this product and its benefits.
One of the standout features of this device is its use of red light therapy, which has been scientifically proven to stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin tone and texture. The Dermatome Supreme device uses a high-powered red light that penetrates deep into the skin to deliver these benefits.
Using the device is simple and easy. The ergonomic design allows for comfortable and convenient use, and the device comes with a built-in timer to ensure that you receive the optimal amount of red light therapy each session. The device also includes a protective eye mask to ensure that your eyes are not exposed to the red light during use.
After using the Dermatome Supreme anti-aging red light device for several weeks, I noticed a significant improvement in the overall appearance of my skin. My fine lines and wrinkles appeared to be less noticeable, and my skin felt smoother and more hydrated. I also noticed an improvement in the texture of my skin, which appeared to be more even and refined.
In addition to its anti-aging benefits, the Dermatome Supreme device also has other skincare benefits, such as reducing the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation, and improving the overall health of the skin.
Overall, I highly recommend the Dermatome Supreme anti-aging red light device for anyone looking to improve the appearance of their skin. Its use of red light therapy, ergonomic design, and ease of use make it an excellent addition to any skincare routine.

9 clinical studies that demonstrate the anti-aging benefits of infrared light therapy..
- The use of light-emitting diode therapy in the treatment of photoaged skin
SOURCE: J Cosmet Dermatol. 2007 Sep;6(3):189-94
BACKGROUND: Light-emitting diode (LED) therapy is an increasingly popular methodology for the treatment of sun damage. Combination use of light wavelengths reported to stimulate collagen synthesis and accelerate fibroblast-myofibroblast transformation may display a composite rejuvenative effect.
OBJECTIVE: To clinically assess reduction in sun damage signs following a 5-week course of LED therapy and to assess subject's perception of the treatment.
METHODS: Thirteen subjects with wrinkles or fine lines in the periorbital and nasolabial region and those presenting Glogau scale photodamage grade II-III received nine 20-min duration light treatments using the Omnilux LED system. The treatments combined wavelengths of 633 and 830 nm at fluences of 126 and 66 J/cm(2), respectively. Sun-damage reduction was assessed at 6, 9, and 12 weeks by clinical photography and patient satisfaction scores.
RESULTS: The majority of subjects displayed "moderate" (50%) or "slight" (25%) response to treatment at investigator assessment. Treatment of the periorbital region was reported more effective than the nasolabial region. At 12-week follow-up, 91% of subjects reported improved skin tone, and 82% reported enhanced smoothness of skin in the treatment area.
CONCLUSION: Good response to LED therapy has been shown in this modest sample. Larger trials are needed to assess optimum frequency of light treatments and overall treatment time.
- A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, and split-face clinical study on LED phototherapy for skin rejuvenation: clinical, profilometric, histologic, ultrastructural, and biochemical evaluations and comparison of three different treatment settings
SOURCE: J Photochem Photobiol B. 2007 Jul 27;88(1):51-67. Epub 2007 May 1
BACKGROUND: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are considered to be effective in skin rejuvenation.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the clinical efficacy of LED phototherapy for skin rejuvenation through the comparison of three different treatment parameters and a control, and also examined the LED-induced histological, ultrastructural, and biochemical changes.
METHODS: Seventy-six patients with facial wrinkles were treated with quasimonochromatic LED devices on the right half of their faces. All subjects were randomly divided into four groups treated with either 830nm alone, 633nm alone, a combination of 830 and 633nm, or a sham treatment light, twice a week for four weeks. Serial photography, profilometry, and objective measurements of the skin elasticity and melanin were performed during the treatment period with a three-month follow-up period. The subject’s and investigator’s assessments were double-blinded. Skin specimens were evaluated for the histologic and ultrastructural changes, alteration in the status of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs), and the changes in the mRNA levels of IL-1ss, TNF-alpha, ICAM-1, IL-6 and connexin 43 (Cx43), by utilizing specific stains, TEM, immunohistochemistry, and real-time RT-PCR, respectively.
RESULTS: Objectively measured data showed significant reductions of wrinkles (maximum: 36%) and increases of skin elasticity (maximum: 19%) compared to baseline on the treated face in the three treatment groups. Histologically, a marked increase in the amount of collagen and elastic fibers in all treatment groups was observed. Ultrastructural examination demonstrated highly activated fibroblasts, surrounded by abundant elastic and collagen fibers. Immunohistochemistry showed an increase of TIMP-1 and 2. RT-PCR results showed the mRNA levels of IL-1ss, TNF-alpha, ICAM-1, and Cx43 increased after LED phototherapy whereas that of IL-6 decreased.
CONCLUSION: This therapy was well-tolerated by all patients with no adverse effects. We concluded that 830 and 633nm LED phototherapy is an effective approach for skin rejuvenation.
-Clinical experience with light-emitting diode (LED) photomodulation
SOURCE: Dermatol Surg. 2005 Sep;31(9 Pt 2):1199-205
BACKGROUND: Light-emitting diode (LED) photomodulation is a novel nonthermal technology used to modulate cellular activity with light.
OBJECTIVE: We describe our experience over the last 2 years using 590 nm LED photomodulation within a dermatologic surgery environment.
METHODS: Practical use of nonthermal light energy and emerging applications in 3,500 treatments delivered to 900 patients is detailed.
RESULTS: LED photomodulation has been used alone for skin rejuvenation in over 300 patients but has been effective in augmentation of results in 600 patients receiving concomitant nonablative thermal and vascular treatments such as intense pulsed light, pulsed dye laser, KTP and infrared lasers, radiofrequency energy, and ablative lasers.
CONCLUSION: LED photomodulation reverses signs of photoaging using a new nonthermal mechanism. The anti-inflammatory component of LED in combination with the cell regulatory component helps improve the outcome of other thermal-based rejuvenation treatments.

Pioneering a new wellness system designed by the honeybee
New research by Dove reveals the effect toxic beauty standards have on children online
'Young people, especially when they are at high risk in terms of their mental health, are vulnerable to some of the most concerning aspects of social media,' says Dr Bruce Clark.
The research, conducted by data consultancy Edelman DXI , canvassed children, parents, social media users and mental health specialists to gain a clear picture of the state of online beauty content and mental health in kids.
The results, while sadly unsurprising, are shocking to uncover. Over 50% of children reported that social media makes them and their peers feel anxious while 9 in 10 youth mental health specialists say that the proliferation of and exposure to harmful beauty content on social media can lead to conditions such as disordered eating or self-harming behaviours.
9 in 10 children are exposed to toxic beauty content on social media
The campaign, which is in partnership with singer/songwriter Self Esteem, features a moving short film ( Cost of Beauty: A Dove Film ), detailing one girl, Mary's, damaging experience with image-based, triggering beauty content on social media.
In the video, Mary, once a joyful child, finds her body image shattered after exposure to pro-eating disorder content and unrealistic beauty standards on social media, eventually being hospitalised for an eating disorder.
Now in recovery, Mary's story is one of the many shared by Dove, with girls healing from self-harm, body dysmorphia and depression.
'My default feeling for as long as I can remember has been one of inadequacy. It was burned into my mind even before social media, and it has successfully compounded it. It can keep women in a constant state of comparison which they can never live up to, holding us back and stopping us grow,' shares Self Esteem .
50% of children reported that social media makes them and their peers feel anxious
Changing the narrative around the impact social media can have on children begins with us. Social media, by design, is designed to create an addictive loop that keeps users plugged in, scrolling and interacting. Children, with fewer resources to recognise healthy or unhealthy behaviours, are likely to internalise the actions and ideals they see online.
Dove asks that, instead of blaming the parents or individual people, we recognise the need to create a safe environment for all on social media, regardless of age.
8 in 10 youth mental health specialists say social media is fuelling a mental health crisis
'We know social media can have both positive and challenging effects on mental well-being. Young people, especially when they are at high risk in terms of their mental health, are vulnerable to some of the most concerning aspects of social media,' says Dr Bruce Clark , Clinical Director for Child and Adolescent Mental Health, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
'Now more than ever, we have a responsibility to our children to change the story on mental health. This means better understanding, treatment, and prevention of mental ill health. Working in partnership with young people, families, and schools, we are committed to understanding the causes and delivering evidence-based, effective programmes early [in] young people’s lives when they have the best chance of making a difference.”
As part of its mission to fundamentally change the way children engage with beauty content online, Dove is encouraging people to sign its petition to improve safety for children online.
Dove is working in partnership with the Maudsley Charity to fund the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People, Parenting Mental Health and organisations like Global Action Plan , 5Rights , and Girlguiding to create the change children need on social media.

How a health scare led Caprice to change her lifestyle and support a special cause
The model is helping raise money for brain tumour research.
Caprice Bourret is in her element as she joins HELLO! for an exclusive interview and photoshoot at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
"I actually grew up at the races," says the 52-year-old model, actress and businesswoman, who is showcasing colourful millinery creations ahead of the Epsom Derby on Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June.
"I used to be quite lucky as a child because I would instinctively pick the winners," continues California-born Caprice. "It was quite an ongoing joke as I would know nothing about betting. But just recently, I tried betting on instincts and failed miserably, so I guess that technique didn't roll over into my adult life."
Supporting Brain Tumour Research
Caprice – the mum of ten-year-old sons Jett and Jax with her financier husband Ty Comfort - is certainly on winning form on our shoot. She's also supporting a cause close to her heart.
The six show stopping hats and fascinators she's modelling are part of an exclusive collection of 15 haute couture pieces launched to raise awareness and funds for Brain Tumour Research on its 15th anniversary.
"I've been a patron of Brain Tumour Research for the past five years," says Caprice, who had neurosurgery in 2017 to remove a thumb-sized tumour – a benign meningioma – from the front of her skull.
"I've not only donated a substantial amount of money, but I've fought to raise funds and awareness endlessly to find a cure for this horrible, horrible disease."
Hats on display
A collaboration between Brain Tumour Research, the British Hat Guild and the Jockey Club, the initiative sees the carnival-themed masterpieces – created by top British milliners including Stephen Jones and Jane Taylor – go on display at the Newmarket Rowley Mile Racecourse this month.
The exhibition will conclude at the Betfair Derby Festival at Epsom Racecourse, while the hats are being auctioned online – or can be bought on site before then – to raise vital funds for the charity.
"I rarely wear hats, but these are exceptionally gorgeous. They'll look good on everyone," says Caprice.

Caprice's personal style.
Voted GQ's Woman of the Year and Maxim's International Woman of the Year for three years running after first finding fame in the 1990s, Caprice describes her personal sense of style as "classic" – not that it's always been that way, she adds.
"OMG has [my style] changed – thank goodness! I look back at some pictures and literally cringe in horror. My sense of style now is quite classic, very simple lines. You can never go wrong with a simple black dress, which I probably had 5,000 of."
Her health scare
It's not only Caprice's fashion sense that has changed.
Seven years after her health scare , she is stronger than ever, with a fresh outlook on life and enhanced appreciation for her wellbeing. She has "changed significantly" since being diagnosed with a brain tumour while taking part in Channel 4's celebrity skiing series The Jump.
"I was very fortunate. I had the surgery where they removed the entire growth and found out it was benign," she says. "But working with Brain Tumour Research, I have had relationships with a lot of people that had tumours that were cancerous. It is absolutely devastating.
"And I will keep on raising awareness, raising funds for this important charity, and find a cure so we can save lives."
"When you have a health scare like that, it is a major shake-up. But I never played the victim," she continues. "I took responsibility and changed my lifestyle."
That change included "eliminating as much stress as possible", she says. "Let me tell you something, you don't have control over what happens in your environment, but you do have control over how you react to these various circumstances."
