Microfinance is currently being promoted as a key development strategy for promoting poverty reduction and empowerment of people economically. This is because of its potential to effectively address poverty by granting financial services to households who are not served by the formal banking sector. This study attempted to investigate the effects of MFIs on poverty reduction. The study focused on places located in Addis Ababa, especially in Akaki Kality sub city as a case study. It intended to cover credit facilities provided by the MFIs and clients perception on income improvement and/or reduced poverty levels. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population was one staff/administrators and 50 clients or recipients of the MFIs. The study employed stratified sampling technique to select staff of the selected MFIs and clients. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods were used. The study revealed that as a microfinance institution has been providing microfinance services to different groups of youth specially women - productive or active poor and that the institution uses various strategies to deliver its services such as granting small loans to women to help them start businesses, grow their businesses and educate their children. To enhance client’s business skills to use credit and establish market channels for their products, the study recommends that microfinance institutions can arrange mechanisms to improve technical and business skills of the poorest through training and loan utilization. The study also recommended that MFIs should put in place micro-insurance schemes which could help clients to pool risk or share losses.

This research examines the relationship microfinance and poverty alleviation in Nigeria, to understand the effectiveness of micro credit within the context of its current practice in Edo State in particular, and the nation as a whole as a tool for wealth creation and capital accumulation among the poverty stricken populace and low income earners. The study made use of primary data obtained through field survey from the selected microfinance banks in Edo State and utilized quantitative tools to analyze these data so as to bring out any existing relationship between microfinance and poverty alleviation. The results obtained showed that microfinance has the potential of alleviating poverty by ensuring wealth creation and its attendant self-sufficiency. From our result, about 70% of the sampled population agreed that there is a positive relationship between microfinance and improved standard of living of the recipients of these micro credits; 78% attested that they obtained some sort of credit from microfinance banks to set up their small scale businesses, without which it would be impossible to do so; about 67% said they have used loan collected to expand their business while 24% said they used the loan collected to invest on new technology for their business and the remaining 9% of the respondents obtained loans to facilitate the export of their products. Based on these findings, we could see that Microfinance has helped in alleviating poverty in the country by helping individuals to start up their business, expand their existing business, increase the level of employment and raise the standard of living in the country Focus of microfinance programmes in poor communities for it to be meaningful; a massive educational drive on the importance of microfinance in fighting widespread poverty should be launched in the country; etc were some of the recommendations made in this study.

Microfinance is not a new concept of financial intermediation in Ghana. It provides very low-income earners who have remained under-served by universal banks within the context of self-help to save for the future and to take small loans for trading, production, or consumption. This study attempted to access microfinance as a tool for poverty alleviation using women in Tamale Ghana as a case study. The general objective of the study was to find out the impact microfinance has on businesses, social lives, and the livelihoods of people who patronise it. The specific objectives included assessing the income levels of clients of microfinance institutions, finding out how credit is accessed and repaid, identifying the challenges they encounter in accessing micro financial services, and finally, evaluating the impact microfinance has on their socio-economic well-being and poverty levels of Ghanaians. It sampled 230 women using the Yamane taro 1967 formula. Structured questionnaire was administered to the sample for primary data which was analysed and presented using frequency distribution tables, bar and pie charts, and simple regression. It emerged from this study that, the average monthly income levels of most respondents increased as a result of enterprise expansion done with loans taken from microfinance institutions. This marginally improved their diet, access to healthcare, and education for their wards. The increase in income, however, did not reflect in respondents’ ability to save as almost of the income goes into loan repayment. This was attributed to high-interest rates charged on loans which are often accessed in solidarity groups and paid weekly. The non-payment of interest on deposits, the high interest charged on loans, and the frequent collapse of microfinance institutions due to high non-performing loan portfolios are challenges to accessing microfinance products and services. The study concluded that microfinance does have potencies that when channeled properly can unlock enormous economic benefits to lift the poor out of poverty. It was recommended that microfinance institutions be client-centered and industry regulators must be apt and dynamic in protecting clients and injecting sanity into the microfinance subsector. It is also recommended that further studies be done to understand whether reducing interest rates charged on loans by microfinance institutions will result in boosting repayments and enabling savings among loan clients.

Ramatu Ussif
The poor been provided with financial services like credit, insurance, savings, and investment as employment creation and poverty reduction technique has earned much importance in the country for the past decade. This article examines microfinance institutions' role in poverty reduction, employment creation, and income-generating activities in Ghana. Again, it determines whether the institution has helped in the reduction of poverty, improving the standard and condition of living of its clients/customers. Primary and secondary data were used. A total of 90 respondents were interviewed made up of customers with questionnaires and was analyzed using SPSS. From the investigation, the article found out that microfinance institutions have highly impacted positively and significantly on customers in the form of income generation, employment creation, reducing poverty, increasing the standard of living and household's well-being of the customers. Also, the emanated results from the questionnaires administered reveal a favorable relationship between microfinance, poverty reduction and employment creation since most of the beneficiaries attested to a level of improvement in their businesses through the loans they receive and also improvement in their living standards and conditions since they became part of the microfinance program. Aside from the positive impacts, the institution is not without problems/issues affecting its operations and growth. These problems/issues include Risk problem, regulatory issues, capacity building problem, and problems of information gathering and dissemination which if stakeholders address properly, the microfinance institution will continue to contribute meaningfully towards employment creation, reducing poverty and increasing incomes across the world not only in Ghana.
