PhD in Data Science

An NRT-sponsored program in Data Science

  • Areas & Faculty
  • Admission Requirements
  • Medical School Track
  • NRT FUTURE Program

Advances in computational speed and data availability, and the development of novel data analysis methods, have birthed a new field: data science. This new field requires a new type of researcher and actor: the rigorously trained, cross-disciplinary, and ethically responsible data scientist. Launched in Fall 2017, the pioneering CDS PhD Data Science program seeks to produce such researchers who are fluent in the emerging field of data science, and to develop a native environment for their education and training. The CDS PhD Data Science program has rapidly received widespread recognition and is considered among the top and most selective data science doctoral programs in the world. It has recently been recognized by the NSF through an NRT training grant.

The CDS PhD program model rigorously trains data scientists of the future who (1) develop methodology and harness statistical tools to find answers to questions that transcend the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines; (2) clearly communicate to extract crisp questions from big, heterogeneous, uncertain data; (3) effectively translate fundamental research insights into data science practice in the sciences, medicine, industry, and government; and (4) are aware of the ethical implications of their work.

Our programmatic mission is to nurture this new generation of data scientists, by designing and building a data science environment where methodological innovations are developed and translated successfully to domain applications, both scientific and social. Our vision is that combining fundamental research on the principles of data science with translational projects involving domain experts creates a virtuous cycle: Advances in data science methodology transform the process of discovery in the sciences, and enable effective data-driven governance in the public sector. At the same time, the demands of real-world translational projects will catalyze the creation of new data science methodologies. An essential ingredient of such methodologies is that they embed ethics and responsibility by design.

These objectives will be achieved by a combination of an innovative core curriculum, a novel data assistantship mechanism that provides training of skills transfer through rotations and internships, and communication and entrepreneurship modules. Students will be exposed to a wider range of fields than in more standard PhD programs while working with our interdisciplinary faculty. In particular, we are proud to offer a medical track for students eager to explore data science as applied to healthcare or to develop novel theoretical models stemming from medical questions.

In short, the CDS PhD Data Science program prepares students to become leaders in data science research and prepares them for outstanding careers in academia or industry. Successful candidates are guaranteed financial support in the form of tuition and a competitive stipend in the fall and spring semesters for up to five years.* We invite you to learn more through our webpage or by contacting  [email protected] .

*The Ph.D. program also offers students the opportunity to pursue their study and research with Data Science faculty based at NYU Shanghai. With this opportunity, students generally complete their coursework in New York City before moving full-time to Shanghai for their research. For more information, please visit the NYU Shanghai Ph.D. page .

Economics (PhD)

Program description.

Stern’s PhD program in economics is known for its world-class faculty that includes two Nobel-prize-winning economists and an extremely low student-faculty ratio.  Students receive personalized attention while also having access to a broad range of courses through the economics department of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  The research interests of Stern economics faculty span many areas, with particular strengths in industrial organization and applied micro theory, including applications to strategy, and macro economics, including applications to finance and international economics.

All applicants to the NYU Stern School of Business PhD Program are required to submit a complete application for admission. A complete application includes the  online application ,  statement of purpose ,  optional essay ,  educational history and resume or CV ,  letters of recommendation ,  test scores ,  academic transcripts , and an  application fee .

See How to Apply for admission requirements and instructions specific to this program.

Program Requirements

Curriculum Details

Although every doctoral student must satisfy general requirements, each student designs and completes an individual program of study.

Each new doctoral student begins a program of study, which requires approval from the Area Coordinator and the Doctoral Office. Any unusual features or revisions of an approved program of study requires permission from both the department Area Coordinator and the Doctoral Office. Unless specifically approved in advance by the Area Coordinator and the Doctoral Office, MBA courses will not be eligible for tuition remission.

The general PhD degree requirement for students entering the program with a Master’s degree or equivalent is to successfully complete a minimum of 36 credits. The requirement for students entering the program with only a Bachelor’s degree is to successfully complete a minimum of 54 credits. If the Doctoral Office and the department Area Coordinator approve, a program of study may include previous graduate work at NYU or other universities. In all cases, students must complete at least 33 credits of coursework at NYU.

An approved program of study becomes part of the student’s permanent academic file and represents a formal commitment by both the student and the school. Any approved program can be modified as appropriate.

A complete program of study must include:

  • Prerequisites: Every student must satisfy the prerequisites in calculus, linear algebra, basic probability and statistics, and economics before starting doctoral study. This can be accomplished by taking courses in these subjects for a grade.
  • Basic Research Skills Methodology Courses: Every student must complete four research methodology courses, including three courses in probability and statistics, and one course in microeconomics.

Support NYU Law

  • JD Admissions
  • Dual Degree Programs

JD/PhD and JD/MA Programs

New York University School of Law (Law) and Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) offer coordinated dual degree programs leading to a Juris Doctor (JD) and either a PhD or MA degree in two Arts and Science disciplines:

Law and GSAS also offer dual degree programs leading to a JD and MA in the following disciplines:

  • French Studies
  • Latin American and Caribbean Studies

Law and GSAS also offer dual degree programs leading to a JD and PhD in the following disciplines:

  • American Studies
  • Comparative Literature
  • Computer Science
  • Hebrew and Judaic Studies
  • Italian Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies
  • Neural Science
  • Psychology (Cognition and Perception)

Students enrolled in these dual degree programs will work closely with faculty advisors in both the School of Law and GSAS to develop an integrated program of study and research. The programs are particularly aimed at students interested in pursuing academic careers. We expect that students who complete the JD/PhD program will be strong candidates for faculty positions in both law schools and in arts and sciences programs. The JD/MA programs provide rigorous interdisciplinary training for students interested in legal academia, but also for students who plan to pursue other career paths related to law.

These coordinated programs reduce the amount of time required to complete both degrees. The School of Law will count 12 credits of GSAS coursework toward the total of 83 credits required for the JD degree, typically allowing dual degree students to complete their JD coursework in five semesters rather than the usual six. All coursework must be approved by the respective program to count towards the dual degree program. Likewise, some law school coursework will count toward the PhD and MA program requirements, allowing students to accelerate the completion of those degrees. For students in the JD/MA program, both degrees are typically conferred at the end of four years (eight semesters) rather than the usual five years to complete both degrees separately. For students in the JD/PhD program, the JD is typically conferred at the end of the fourth year, while the student continues to complete the PhD requirements.

Prospective dual degree students must apply independently to both the School of Law and GSAS and be admitted to both. Current law students or GSAS doctoral students may apply to enter a dual degree program during their first year. Students looking to start the JD/PhD program at GSAS should inquire with the School of Law about the program sequence. Please refer to the GSAS website for information regarding funding for PhD candidates.

Students interested in a dual degree program are encouraged to contact Amy Chu, Senior Director of Academic Services and Registration at the School of Law ( [email protected] or 212-998-6020) or Tania Barnes at GSAS ( [email protected] ) for more information.

Where Does The Time Go? Riley Burruss Is Officially A First-Generation College Graduate!

Where Does The Time Go? Riley Burruss Is Officially A First-Generation College Graduate!

Riley Burruss , 21, is officially a college graduate, and her family and friends couldn’t be happier. The latest grad in town had a bash to celebrate this huge milestone the day before Mother’s Day. Riley started studying nutrition at the prestigious university but eventually changed her major to music business, following her mom, Kandi Burruss ‘ footsteps.

The lush event was held at the Self Made Studio in Atlanta, and many of Kandi’s celeb friends were in attendance. Some included Porsha Williams, Eva Marcille, Shamea Morton, and Monyetta Shaw-Carter, who all are relatively close friends of the Xscape singer and have appeared on the Real Housewives of Atlanta at some point.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TheYBF (@theybf_daily)

Of course, Riley’s stepfather, Todd Tucker, and her step-sister, Kaela Tucker, were also in attendance to show their support.

The event had an NYU theme with purple and white decor filling the space. Several of Riley’s graduation pictures were blown up around the room, and the new grad was also on the theme, rocking a strapless purple maxi dress. She paired the dress with purple sneakers, purple and white nails, and her natural curls.

During a speech, Kandi had kind words to give to her firstborn on a day many parents are proud to witness.

“We are so appreciative of our village and those who supported Riley,” Kandi said during the speech. “You finished what you started. A lot of people don’t do that. You started college, and you finished… You did it. And [Riley’s] not one of those people that I had to call, checking on her constantly, being like, ‘Did you do your homework?’ She did it on her own… I am proud of you,” the entrepreneur and singer said lovingly.

Todd, who has known Riley for over a decade, also added some warm words during the speech.

“Riley, I am so, so proud of you. You have always been a brilliant kid, always been smart,” he said. You were born to do this, so congratulations. [You] graduated college, and I’m excited to see your next chapter.”

Kandi had Riley with Russell “Block” Spencer, but he has been in and out of the NYU grad’s life since birth. Their tumultuous relationship was sometimes documented on the RHOA but it’s unclear where they stand now.

Riley also shared her excitement about graduating on Instagram in a lengthy post. She paired the caption with an official graduation picture of herself rocking a cap and gown.

“Officially graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree from NYU! (major: music business),” her caption began.

“I have been surrounded by music my entire life, and I’d like to thank my mom for that, @kandi 🤎. Always being around my mom and her music inspired me to pursue a degree in music, so having the opportunity to actually study music business has been an amazing journey! I have truly fallen in love with my studies these past four years,” Burruss said.

Kandi became famous in the 1990s when she joined the music group Xscape as one of the lead vocalists. The group is still relevant and performs nationwide at various music concerts.

“As a first-generation college student, I am so proud of myself for reaching the finish line and staying on track to receive this degree. I cannot believe that I am the first person in my family to graduate college, and I am so grateful for everyone who came to celebrate me and those who have supported me,” Riley concluded.

Congratulations to the latest grad in town! We’re also excited to see her forge her path!
