Golfer Grayson Murray's parents reveal his cause of death in emotional statement

statement grey

The golf world received a stunning blow on Saturday with the death of rising PGA Tour star Grayson Murray at the age of 30.

On Sunday, May 26, his parents – Eric and Terry Murray – revealed their son's cause of death in an emotional statement released on social media.

"Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," the statement shared by the PGA Tour read.

The family said they spent the last 24 hours "trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone." Having to come to terms with their loss and share it with the public, they said, "it's a nightmare."

The family said one thing is certain, Murray was loved by "all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you reading this."

Murray, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour who battled alcohol issues and depression, played the first round and part of the second round in this week's Charles Schwab Challenge, but withdrew from the event after 16 holes.

"We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones," PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said Saturday . "I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so."

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Grayson's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement Sunday that the cause of death was suicide .

"Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents wrote. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed."

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.

NCAA settlement fallout: UCLA could distribute $20M per year to athletes

statement grey

Five days after the landmark House vs. NCAA settlement created $2.8 billion in back damages, UCLA was among the first schools to lay out its plan for student-athlete revenue sharing that will begin August 2025.

In a statement to James H. Williams of Southern California News Group and later obtained by Bruin Blitz, the UCLA athletic department announced Tuesday evening that it “could amount to as much as $20M-$22M per year” to be shared with more than 600 athletes across all sports.

The revenue-sharing model will be capped at 22% of the revenue, the statement read.

"It's a new era in collegiate athletics,” the statement read. “We embrace this transformation for what it means for our student-athletes: the opportunity to receive direct NIL payments and revenue sharing. Our goals are to support and develop our student-athletes, compete at the highest level and maintain fiscal sustainability. UCLA Athletics expects to participate in student-athlete revenue sharing, with an anticipated start of August 2025.”

The revenue-sharing model is in addition to funds that will be distributed to former athletes after the framework was approved last Tuesday by the Division I Board of Directors. Schools will fund 60% — or $1.65 billion — of the damages and the NCAA will foot the remaining $1.1 billion over a 10-year period for lost name, image and likeness (NIL) opportunities, according to Yahoo! Sports senior college football reporter Ross Dellenger .

UCLA will have to navigate the new revenue-sharing model and back damages while continuing to work its way out of debt. According to the Los Angeles Times, the school has accumulated $167.7 million in debt since the 2019 fiscal year.

In addition, the University of California regents ordered UCLA to pay $10 million per year in athletic support payments to sister school California as part of the fallout for leaving the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten.

The additional costs of the conference switch include $10.32 million per year that UCLA will spend on nutrition, mental health and academic services and increased chartered flights.

UCLA will receive $60 million per year in media-rights revenue from the Big Ten.

“In addition to this reform, we will soon welcome a new chancellor to UCLA,” the statement read. “With finite resources, an investment in revenue sharing will greatly alter our financial outlook, and we anticipate important discussions with campus leadership around equity, who will receive these new benefits, and how we remain both competitive and fiscally sustainable. Our student-athletes and their holistic development remain at the core of everything we do, and we will continue to support and develop them while investing in priority areas of academics, nutrition and mental health resources."

It remains to be seen how schools across the country will navigate the new world order in college athletics while remaining compliant with Title IX.

Earlier Tuesday, California lawmaker Chris Holden removed the revenue-sharing portion of his proposed state bill, AB 252, in response to the landmark settlement.

Holden, though, will continue to push for legislation that would prevent schools from cutting sports and scholarships.

“While the progress toward athlete revenue-sharing is groundbreaking, college athletes lack basic physical and academic protections that AB 252 will provide,” Holden said in a statement.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Porsche-driving madman with flowing blond locks laughed as he stabbed four little girls watching kids movie “IF” at a Massachusetts theater — then attacked two other people at a McDonald’s, according to cops and a witness.

Jared Ravizza, 26, of Martha’s Vineyard, is also suspected in a murder investigation in Connecticut.

He is accused of wounding four girls at the AMC Braintree 10 movie theater outside Boston in eastern Massachusetts about 6 p.m. on Saturday, according to  Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz .

A suspect wearing a blond wig is arrested in connection with a stabbing that wounded four girls in an AMC movie theater south of Boston Saturday, May 25, 2024.

Authorities say he walked into the theater and stabbed the four children without saying a word. The victims were under 17, with the youngest being only 9 years old.

“Without saying anything and without any warning, he suddenly attacked and stabbed the four young females,” the Braintree Police Department said in a statement. “The attack appeared to be unprovoked. After the attack, the man ran out of the theater and left in a vehicle.”

Local mom Lisa Dembowski  told WCVB 5 in Boston  that her three daughters and their friend were the victims.

The girls were there to see the movie “IF,” a PG-rated flick starring Ryan Reynolds about a girl who starts seeing other people’s imaginary friends that they left in their childhood.

“I got a call from my sister that my oldest daughter had called her (and) that I needed to get to the AMC movie theater right away because they had been stabbed,” Dembowski told the outlet. “Honestly, I just got in my car and headed right there.”

Cops took her inside after she arrived — and the worried mom was shocked to see people still buying tickets at the open theater as if nothing had happened.

Then her girls told her what happened as they enjoyed the movie.

“They were the only four people in this movie theater,” she said. “They had just sat down. They had just got their concessions.”

“I guess he came up behind them in the row — they were in the second row — and he came up behind them,” she continued. “My oldest was leaned over to get something. He got her in the back and then my other daughter in the top of the chest.

“Then, my last daughter across her arm — laughing the whole time — and then got their friend and then ran off.”

The girls were rushed to Boston-area hospitals and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A movie theater concessions worker described the suspect as wearing “an oversized trench coat, sunglasses, and a long blonde wig,”  according to CBS Boston.

According to local media reports, Ravizza’s blond hair is real and not a wig.

What to know about Massachusetts stabbing spree suspect Jared Ravizza

  • Jared Ravizza, 26, is suspected of going on a stabbing spree across Massachusetts and Connecticut on May 25, 2024.
  • Ravizza allegedly laughed as he stabbed four girls at a Braintree movie theater before driving to Plymouth and allegedly attacking two people in a McDonald’s.
  • A witness to the McDonald’s attack said Ravizza had a “big expression” on his face and compared it to Jack Nicholson’s character in “The Shining.”
  • He is also suspected of murdering his 70-year-old roommate, Bruce Feldman , in the Deep River, Connecticut, house they shared.
  • Ravizza was arrested in April on Martha’s Vineyard for allegedly attacking his father . Jason Ravizza claimed his son suffered a “mental break” before assaulting him and wrecking his office.
  • He was apparently in the process of changing his look ahead of the attacks and had filed paperwork for a legal name change to Jared Love Jones last month.
  • Locals told The Post that Ravizza is a “weirdo” who had an obsession with exercising and his looks. He had a dispute with two neighbors shortly before Feldman’s murder in which he allegedly threw a shovel through their window after they called the police on Feldman.

Ravizza then fled in a Porsche SUV and drove 30 miles to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he allegedly stabbed two employees of a rest-stop McDonald’s on Route 3.

Ravizza allegedly reached through the drive-thru window and stabbed a 29-year-old man with a knife, according to investigators who reviewed surveillance video from the fast-food joint.

Then he parked his black 2018 Porsche Macan, went inside and knifed a 21-year-old woman, Cruz said on social media.

statement grey

The victims were also treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Ravizza allegedly then led police on a car chase that only ended when he crashed his expensive ride in Sandwich, Mass.

Cops arrested him at about 7:15 p.m., then brought him to the hospital for treatment.

He faces several charges in Plymouth, including assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the district attorney said.

Ravizza may also be linked to a murder investigation at a home in Deep River, Connecticut, the Connecticut State Police said.

Cops found a body in the tiny town around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to WCVB.

Connecticut State Police issued an alert earlier for the suspect, describing him as “armed and dangerous” with a 10-inch knife, CBS Boston reported.

“A suspect in this investigation has been taken into custody in the state of Massachusetts, and there is no active threat to the public,” the State Police said in a news release.

Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, dies at 30

The parents of Murray, who died Saturday after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge, said in a statement that “life wasn’t always easy” for their son.

The parents of Grayson Murray, the two-time PGA Tour winner whose death Saturday stunned the golf community, spoke of the anguish of their loss, saying in a statement, “Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson and, although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement issued by the PGA Tour: “We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare. We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed. We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support.”

In asking for privacy, his parents asked people to “please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

The death of the 30-year-old was announced during the third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Saturday in Fort Worth.

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Murray had withdrawn from the second round of the tournament Friday, citing an illness. He was 5 over par with the final two holes remaining in the round at Colonial.

A North Carolina native, Murray grew into a standout golfer in his youth, becoming the second-youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at 16 and playing as an amateur in the U.S. Open at 19. After attending Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State, he earned full status on the PGA Tour for the 2016-17 season. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship, earning his first victory on tour at 23.

Murray struggled in subsequent seasons and publicly discussed his battles with alcoholism and mental health. He said he received treatment for addiction and worked to return to form.

He twice won on the Korn Ferry Tour last year and reclaimed his PGA Tour card that fall. In January, he won the Sony Open in Hawaii. That win elevated him to a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Murray ranked No. 58 at the time of his death.

Monahan said he reached out to Murray’s family to offer his condolences. During that conversation, Monahan said Murray’s parents “asked that we continue with tournament play.”

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” Monahan said. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Professional golfer Grayson Murray, 30, dies by suicide after withdrawing from Charles Schwab Challenge

Murray was a two-time winner on the pga tour.

grayson-murray-cwc-g.png

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died. He was 30 years old. Murray's death comes after he withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an illness.

A day after Murray's death rocked the larger sporting world, his parents announced in a statement through the PGA Tour that he died by suicide.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

An undeniable talent, Murray was the second-youngest golfer in history to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour before turning eventually pro in 2015. He bounced up and down between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour over the course of his career, becoming a polarizing figure at times because of frequent outbursts on the course.

Still, his potential consistently flashed as he won twice on the PGA Tour -- capturing the 2017 Barbasol Championship and 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii -- and three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

When he won the Sony Open, it seemed as if Murray had turned a corner after battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse throughout his young career. He said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. He also shared that he was unprepared for life as a pro when he first got out of college and began traveling.

"Yes, I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said after his Sony Open win. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year -- but also feeling like I was invincible."

Murray cited his faith and his fiancee as helping ground him, and he spoke about his road to recovery.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," he said. "… I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

Murray added: "People who don't know me, I'll have to show it through my actions, and they'll get back on Grayson's side. My demeanor is so much better. It's really a lot of fun now. I really don't live and die by a golf shot anymore. I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be all glory and roses, but it's going to be a lot better."

The PGA Tour considered postponing play at the Charles Schwab Challenge as the golf world was rocked by Murray's death . However, his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled as it was what their son would have wanted.

"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a Saturday statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

"I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes."

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. In 141 career PGA Tour starts, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes, including those two victories.

The PGA Tour has sent grief counselors to both tournament sites this week and made others available virtually for its members.
